More than a year after the financial

collapse of September 2008, it would
seem that we are entering a new era,
the challenges of the past months are
being replaced with bigger questions
about our long term future, far from
being the end of life as we know it,
this could signal a very exciting
period in innovation, investment
and creativity. Looking back it seems
extraordinary that we allowed things shock and
to go so far, that we didn’t snap out of opportunity
We have suffered an extraordinary shock, one with

our zombie like greed, exploitation, a global impact which has allowed us to gain a more
balanced perspective. In the aftermath we have a

consumption and trust in the system

before we were forced to. Perhaps
window of opportunity to make profound changes,
anyone who has read Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine
will recognize the reference to ‘disaster capitalism’,
however I am suggesting that the same principles
could be applied for the benefit of the majority rather

We have the freedom to think, to challenge our own

free to make changes in our lives and re-evaluate our
priorities. We might be choosing to work less before
we are forced to do so and finding it’s a positive
choice. We might be waking to the realisation that
we had not done those things we wanted to because
we were too busy planning what to buy next.
This shift is like an overnight collective maturity,
rather than being immersed in my current
preoccupations I find myself thinking about lying on
my deathbed am I going to look back and wish I had
nailed that presentation?, been upgraded on my
London/NY flight? lived in an even bigger, cooler loft?
– no, the truth is I won’t remember any of those things
but I would probably kill for a chance to do some of
the things I take for granted just one more time –
a cuddle with my three year old daughter, the chance
to design something really beautiful and useful, the
ability to help someone who really needs it, a chance
to talk to my parents again. This may seem
sentimental but it makes sense – perhaps using this
perspective we can all review how we spend our time
at work and at home – working on projects that make
a difference, standing up for what we believe is right,
looking after the people we love and enjoying
ourselves more in the process.

Real problems
need real solutions
The problems we face now are so big and so real that
management consultants won’t be able to solve them
with powerpoint presentations, these problems
will require us to work together at home, at work,
as families, communities, nations and international
coalitions. The issues we are all preoccupied with
extend beyond economics and politics and cannot
be solved by the financial community or politicians
alone. This is the real opportunity - Who is good at
managing conflicting agendas and solving problems?
Not the money men and clearly not our current breed
of politicians.
The people most able to respond to this crisis
and create a progressive agenda are the thinkers -
philosophers, scientists, engineers and designers.
Complex problems require genuine innovation and
business seems to be waking up to that realization,
a new dynamic is emerging. The world will be forced
to innovate to solve the energy crisis, nations will
need to innovate to reconnect with their populations
and solve the very real social problems affecting
health, education, crime and well being. We are
entering a phase of genuine innovation, resilience,
renewal and a new kind of reward. It is time to be
super creative, to focus on well being, to challenge
the rules of the past - after decades of fear and
introspection we are entering a new age of
thoughtfulness and fun!
