Six Sigma Introduction (Learnings)

1. Six Sigma is a data driven and disciplined methodology which
includes streamlining operations, improving quality and eliminating
defects in every organization-wide process, to increase customer
satisfaction and profitability.
2. Six Sigma Working: At the beginning, the business problem is
defined. Then root causes for the business problem are identified
which are then converted into statistical problems using Hypothesis
testing methods. Solutions to these causes are studied and an
optimal value for each solution is identified. Then this solution is
converted practical business solution.
3. Six Sigma focuses the Causes and NOT the Results. Hence there is a
paradigm shift from conventional thinking of speed and cost is
responsible for quality to new thinking of quality in turns responsible
for speed and cost.
4. Six Sigma follows following phases
o For Old Process
Define: Define the problem and what is required to
satisfy your customer.
Measure: Map the current process to collect data.
Analyse: Investigate and identify what causes the
problem.
Improve: Implement a fix that will solve the problem.
Control: Sustain the improved results.
o For New Process
Define: Define the project goals and customer (internal
and external) deliverables
Measure: Measure and determine customer needs and
specifications
Analyse: Analyse the process options to meet the
customer needs
Design: Design (detailed) the process to meet the
customer needs
Verify: Verify the design performance and ability to meet
customer needs
5. Components of Six Sigma are Customer, Process, and Employees.
Six Sigma is dedicated to 'Customer focus'. And it should be applied
only if the problem is chronic and painful.
