How to Add Subtitles to Movies Streamed in Netflix

Posted on October 16, 2011

Today I finally figured out a way to display subtitles to streamed movies in Netflix. You might wonder what the
point of having subtitles in Netflix is. Well, I can think of at least 5 reasons:
1. Youre watching a movie late at night and want to keep the volume down so as not to disturb your neighbors.
2. The actors are speaking with a strong regional accent that is hard to understand.
3. Someone in your family (perhaps your parents or your significant others parents) do not speak English very
well, so youd like to display subtitles in their native language.
4. You may be trying to learn a foreign language and are practicing by watching the movie in English and reading
the subtitles in the target language.
5. You may be hard of hearing or deaf.
These are all relevant reasons for subtitles, but Netflix has not (yet) implemented a fully working solution for
subtitles in its streaming engine. Only a limited selection of movies in the streaming library have closed
captioning available within Netflix. And there is no multi-language availability. So if you want to display subtitles
in Spanish for one of the Hollywood movies on Netflix, you are out of luck. Or at least so it seems on the surface.
As it turns out, Netflix has built the subtitle capability in its engine, but makes this available through a hidden
menu. If you download subtitles in your target language from one of the many specialist web sites, you can
convert the file into the format required by Netflix, and then soft upload the subtitles to the movie while you are
watching.
Below I provide a step-by-step guide on how to do that:
Step 1: Search for an SRT file with subtitles for the movie of your choice from any of the many web sites
specializing in subtitles. I personally like to use a web site called PodNapisi. Please note that downloading a file
with subtitles is perfectly legal, because the subtitles have been generated by a user (i.e., they are not
copyrigthted content). If the web site offers you several choices, download the one that is formatted for a single
file and for 25 frames per second (fps).
Step 2: Play the movie in the Netflix player for a little bit and mark the timing (minutes and seconds) for the first
few lines of dialogue. This is very important! You will find that many subtitles files that you download from the
web are a little off in timing compared to the Netflix movies. This is because the subtitles were meant for a movie
that comes from another source (e.g., DVD) and Netflix may have added or deleted a few seconds of video from
the beginning of the movie. You will need the information about timing in the next few steps, so make a note of it
somewhere.
Step 3: Download and install a free program called Jubler this is an editor for subtitles. You will need it
because Netflix accepts subtitles in the DFXP format but most subtitles on the internet are available in the SRT
format. So you will need to convert from SRT to DFXP, using Jubler. If you are working on a Mac OS X, you can
use another program called SRT to DFXP Converter. I personally prefer Jubler and this post is focusing on how to
use Jubler. But SRT to DFXP Converter works similarly, so you can try it out on your own. Jubler has versions for
both Windows and Mac OS X, which is one of the main reasons why I prefer it.

Step 4: Run Jubler and open the SRT file with the subtitles that you have downloaded. For illustrative purposes
in this post, I will be using The Perfect Host movie and Spanish subtitles for that movie, which I found on the
PodNapisi web site.

Step 5: A quick look at the first few lines of the subtitles reveals that they are lagging about 1.5 seconds behind
the movie as it has been formatted for Netflix. (Remember the timings that I asked you to mark for the first few
lines of dialogue in the movie, in Step 2?) You will need to shift the timing a bit. To do that, first select all the lines
of the subtitles in Jubler.

Step 6: Now click on the Tools menu and select Shift Time.

Step 7: The subtitles in the SRT file seem to be lagging approximately 1.5 seconds behind the Netflix movie. Enter
that information to adjust the timing.

Step 8: Once time shifting has completed, export the file into the desired DFXP format. Click on the File menu
and select Save As to do that.

Step 9: Jubler does not have DFXP as an option. However, it allows you to export into XML, which is essentially
the same as DFXP. From the Format dropdown list, select W3C Timed Text (XML) as your desired output format.

Step 10: Select UTF-8 as the target encoding. This is very important! If you fail to export your subtitles under
the UTF-8 encoding, it is highly likely your output file will not be properly read by Netflix.

Step 11: Save the output file using a name of your choice.

Step 12: Go to the location on your hard disk where you saved the output file, and rename the file to change its
extension from XML to DFXP.
Note for Mac OS X users: You will have to select Get Info for that file and rename the file from the Get Info
window. Simply right-clicking on the file and choosing Rename may not work properly, because that affects only
the name of the file, but not the real extension of the file.

Note for Windows users: Make sure you can see the extension of the file before doing the rename. By default,
Windows hides the extensions of known files. XML is a popular extension and therefore there is a great chance
Windows may be hiding the .xml part from your subtitles files name. If this is the case on your computer, click
on Organize, choose Folder and Search Options, and then go to the View tab in the new window that pops up. Find
the Hide extensions for known file types option and deselect it. Hit the Apply button. Now, you should be seeing
your subtitles file with the XML extension. Right-click on the file, choose Rename, change from .xml to .dfxp
and youre done!

Step 13: Now go back to the browser tab where you are running Netflix. Start the movie and pause it when it
loads and begins playing. As you are in the Netflix player and the movie is paused, press simultaneously the
following combination of keys:
If you are running Windows, press CTLR-ALT-SHIFT-M. Update July 19 2012: If this key stroke
combination does not work, try SHIFT-ALT-Click on Video. It seems that newer versions of Silverlight use this
new way to invoke the hidden menu. Thanks to Greg and nickisashkir for calling this change out in the
Comments section below.
If you are running Mac OS X, press Control-Option-Shift-M.

If you have pressed the right combination of keys, you will see a hidden Diagnostics menu appear on your
Netflix screen.

Step 14: Select the second option (Load Custom DFXP File) from the Diagnostics menu. A window will pop up,
which will ask you to locate the DFXP file with the subtitles. Go to the location on your hard disk where you saved
the DFXP file converted by Jubler (as discussed in Step 11). Select to open that file.

Step 15: Once the subtitles file has been soft uploaded to Netflix, you will see that a new button with the text
Subtitles has appeared next to the buttons for Full Screen and Volume in the Control area below the movie screen.
Press the Subtitles button to ensure that the newly uploaded subtitles file has been selected.

Congratulations! You are now ready to play your movie with Spanish subtitles. Just press the Play button and
enjoy!

I hope this works equally well for you as it does for me. Try it out and let me know what your experiences are.
Update March 18 2012
As one of the readers of this post has noted in the Comments section, the latest Silverlight update may disable the
hidden Netflix menu described in this post. I have not yet updated. I tried displaying subtitles today and the
procedure outlined in the post worked. That said, my advice to everyone who has not completed the latest
Silverlight update would be to postpone doing that, as long as Netflix allows streaming movies without the update.
That would ensure you can still display foreign language subtitles. Please let me know in the Comments section if
you have more information on this issue.

Hello. Thank you for this tutorial. I fallowed all the steps and it all works up until the end. The subtitles file is loaded. The
subtitles button appears and is listed as Custom. But when I click the custom it will not turn on. It jumps back to off and
wont stay on custom. Basically what Im saying is it wont let me turn the custom subtitles file I loaded on. Any suggestions
as to what I can do to remedy this? Thanks again.

Ron, I think I have experienced a similar problem a few times in the past. What I did in those cases was log out of Netflix,
restart the browser, log back into Netflix, start the movie and repeat the steps until the subtitles file had been loaded.
Another reason for your problem may be that there is something wrong with your DFXP file. Make sure it is encoded as
UTF-8. Perhaps the best thing to do would be to start from a clean slate again and repeat the steps you did to reformat
your subtitles to the DFXP format. Let me know if any of these suggestions help. If not, perhaps you can give me a bit
more information about your set-up, etc. Im not a Netflix guru but perhaps both of us can think of a solution. You know,
two minds work better than one. Good luck!

Dear Ron,
I have been developing custom subtitles for Netflix content for two years. As far as I can tell, support for DFXP custom subs
has been disabled by Netflix with the most recent iteration of Silverlight. A lot of work has gone down the drain.

Tom,
Thanks for your heads-up. Thats indeed valuable information and a bit disconcerting. I tried running subtitles on a
Netflix movie today and the procedure outlined in my post above still works. I guess that is because I refused to complete

the latest Silverlight update. What this means is basically that we should all postpone updating to the latest Silverlight as
long as possible. Judging from how many people hit my post on a daily basis, I can see there is a huge demand for subtitles
in foreign languages on Netflix. Yet Netflix is not doing anything to support that officially, so I think the company is
missing out on adding a nice feature that would make a lot of customers happy.

I have enjoyed several movies finally with subtitles thanks to your very detailed instructions. I have not been able to convert
subtitles to Friday Night Lights (television series) using the same steps. Though everything looks the same, it does not work.
Are television series different?
Thank you for your help!

Hi Tina, thanks for the feedback. Im glad to hear that my instructions have helped you successfully watch movies
with subtitles. To the best of my knowledge, there is no difference in the way TV series and full-featured movies
are streamed. When you say that it does not work with the Friday Night Lights series, can you describe in more
detail what actually happens? Are the subs showing at all but out of sync? Do you see gibberish (instead of
recognizable text) on the screen? Do you get the option to turn subtitles on and off? Can you even access the
hidden menu using the key shortcut? If you can provide a few answers to the questions below, perhaps I can try
to reverse engineer the situation and let you know if I come up with a solution.

Hi Emil,
The subtitles do not show up at all. Step 14 load custom dfxp file shows up when I press contrl-option-shift-M keys (Mac),
but when I go to the subtitles box it does not let me click on the custom option. It shows a custom subtitle in the box, but I am
unable to select it so no subtitles appear at all on the screen. I have tried repeating the steps several times on different
episodes, but the same thing happens.
Thank you for response and your assistance!

Hi Tina,
This may sound like an obvious question, but did you try to fix this problem by logging out of Netflix and

restarting the browser? I am asking because I had a similar issue with titles for one movie once. I was tinkering
with the titles, trying to sync the copy of the titles I had found on the Web with the actual times on the Netflix
version of the movie. Since I had tried loading the dfxp file too many times, at one point I started experiencing
exactly the same problems you are describing. I logged out of Netflix, closed the browser (Chrome), then restarted
it, logged back into Netflix and the problems had miraculously disappeared.
I hope this helps. I am not sure I am aware of any other reasons that may cause those issues for you.
Let me know how it goes.

Erik, thats a good question. I am not intimately familiar with the details about Silverlight versions and the ability to add
subtitles. What I know with certainty is that some people have experienced issues (as reported in one of the previous
comments) but that I am able to run subtitles on a computer with an older version of Silverlight. I guess the safest
assumption is that if you install a slightly outdated version of Silverlight say, whatever the version was around October-

10

December 2011, it should work. I am pretty sure if you search for that version, you might find one on the internet. Keep in
mind there is no Netflix download per se the whole streaming takes place in your browser, via the Silverlight
technology. So what really matters is what version of Silverlight youre using. As far as I know, you can always sign up for
Netflix and then cancel (i.e., no strings attached). So Id suggest trying it out for a month and testing whether the subtitles
would work on your machine or not. Netflix usually runs a free trial, as well so youre bearing no risk doing this. Hope
this is helpful.

Hi Emil,
Regarding Eriks question; I just joined Netflix March 9, 2012 and downloaded Silverlight at that time. I have not had
any problems with downloading subtitles, except for the one problem mentioned above that I was able to resolve per
your instructions.
And it is true that Netflix will give you a 1 month free trial.
Good luck!

I am happy to have found this thread.Im the only one in my household who speaks english. So its frustrating when I rent
DVDs from redbox and they dont have spanish subtitiles, they hardly ever tell you on the narative whether the dvd has
subtitles or not you just have to rent it and find out.Although the newer dvds have gotten better about dubbing and
subtitiling in other languages.Regardless I am going to give netflix a try.

Hi Erik, I suspect you may have to tell your computer to project on both screens after connecting the VGA cable to your
VGA out port on the laptop. Typically, one of your functional keys on the top of your keyboard is assigned to toggle the
monitor modes. Press and hold the Function (Fn) key, and at the same time press the hotkey with the picture of the
monitor on it. This varies, but on Toshibas it is often F5. Continuing to press the combination will toggle between laptop
monitor only, external monitor only and both screens. You may also need to go into Graphics Properties to adjust the
viewing area. The method for this may vary depending on the type of laptop, but you should be able to right-click on the
desktop and select Graphics Properties. This will take you into the screen that sets up the dual monitors. Select
Extended Desktop to have your display stretch across both monitors. The Clone setting shows the same display on
both monitors. For the purpose of watching movies, I recommend the Clone mode. To play your audio, connect the
audio cord to your laptops out port and plug it into your TVs audio in. You may need to adjust your TVs settings to tell it
to receive video through HDMI but audio to the RCA connectors. Im not sure what type of VGA to HDMI converter you
have bought, but you may also be able to plug the audio cable into that converter. If that is the case, then both your video
and audio will be digitized by the converter and will be streamed to your TV through the HDMI cable. Let me know if that
works for you.

FYI, Emil, you hit on eriks problem when you referred to the VGA to HDMI converter erik may well have just
bought a VGA to HDMI cable, which is completely useless without a converter because, of course, VGA is analog and
HDMI is digital. So you need a converter box. I dont know why they sell such cables, but they do and a lot of
people buy them only to find out they dont do what they want them to do.

Hi Eric,
There are two suggestions that I have (and again, Im not a PC hardware expert):
1) With some laptop configurations, you need to press the hotkey and f5 several times to get to the right setting.
And pause for a second between each press to see if anything changes on your screens.
2) Since you say that youre using a single cord with VGA and HDMI plugs on each end, I think you may have an
issue regarding analog and digital signal. VGA is typically analog signal and HDMI is digital. Thats why most
set-ups for conversion from VGA to HDMI have some sort of a box attached that serves as a audio-to-digital
converter. For example, see the following site for such set-ups: http://goo.gl/acNVx.
Some laptops video cards allow digital output through VGA in which case your cable should work as there is
essentially no need to convert from analog to digital and the cord just allows you to connect to a VGA port on one
end and an HDMI port on the other. Id recommend you look into your laptops manual regarding your video
cards capability to output digital. That should answer this question. I could not find any answer online because
there are several sub-models for the Toshiba Satellite L655. If your card cannot output digital, then return your
cable to the retailer from where you bought it, and buy one of the set-ups featured on the web site I posted above
or anything similar you can find at your preferred retailer. Here is the link again: http://goo.gl/acNVx.
Good luck and let me know how it goes.

I believe there are +50k titles for the us market, and about 4K titles in countries like mine (argentina) for all
of this movies you have an easy menu to set subtitles to Spanish. because of the limited selection of movie
titles we are trying to log as if we were US customers to get more movie options. but many people from arg,
avoid this since there are no Spanish subtitles. why doesnt Netflix allow the whole world to see all +50K
titles? .. i guess it has to do with network and cable operators agreements, no sure.

Emil_M says:
September 24, 2012 at 09:01

Hi Fendo, I think the main reason for the limited choice available in your country is primarily agreements
that Netflix has to strike with the big production studios for streaming their content online in international
locations. The local cable companies may be doing everything possible to prevent Netflix from getting a
stronger foothold in their markets, as well. I think over time youll see the library of titles expand as
Netflix settles in the market and starts turning a profit.

Greg, Im sorry to hear that you were unable to make the subtitles play on your system. Sometimes that happens to
me and what typically solves the problem is to log out of Netflix, close the browser, then re-open the browser, log

If that doesnt work, your actual subs may be corrupt and you may want to load another subs file just to see if it
works.

Greg, unfortunately, I dont have a suggestion on how to check if the subs file is corrupt. When you exported it, did
you select UTF-8 encoding, as prescribed in my unstructions above? Have you tried playing the subs on a different

I followed all of the instructions carefully. I was finally able to successfully load Spanish subtitles for the
movie and English subtitles on a different movie, but it did seem that getting the timing right may be hard
since the Netflix player doesnt list the exact time the video is paused at anymore (which also causes
problems for archiving screen captures or noting lines of dialogue in the movies).
As I said in my previous comment, the diagnostic menu shortcut listed in the original post didnt work for me
but Shift + Alt + Click On Video did. The other difference I noticed when the subtitles did work was that no
button showed up to confirm that they loaded the subtitles just played. There must be something wrong
with the English subtitles for this particular movie (Intermission). I just wish I could figure out what the
problem is.

Hi. Everything seemed to work up until the part where I had to find the converted dfxp file after opening the hidden menu in
Netflix. I couldnt find it! When I went back to Jubler to check or resave the file I could see the already saved files in the
location I saved them in. Im using Windows and I did everything you instructed prior to having to find the dfxp file in the
diagnostics menu. It seems to be converted but it wont show up in the location it was suppose to be at! What am I doing
wrong??

Hi bunni, I think I know what is happening. By default, Windows hides the extensions of known files. XML is a
popular extension and therefore there is a great chance Windows may be hiding the .xml part from your subtitles
files name. Click on Organize, choose Folder and Search Options, and then go to the View tab in the new window
that pops up. Find the Hide extensions for known file types option and deselect it. Hit the Apply button. Now,
you should be seeing your subtitles file with the XML extension. Right-click on the file, choose Rename, change
from .xml to .dfxp and you should be done.
I added this new set of instructions to the original post above based on your feedback, so thanks for your
comments.
Please let me know if that solves your problem.

Its hard to diagnose without seeing your file but one thing that comes to mind is that your subtitles file may be
corrupted. Have you tried with another subtitles file?

Hi Alan, its hard to diagnose the problem remotely but I have two suggestions about what you can do to try to fix
this. 1) Select the English subtitle and see what happens is it really displaying English or your desired target
language? 2) Try with another movie and a different subtitles file and see if the problem persists. Let me know
what the outcome is.

Well Ive been trying several times and nothing! its not working, at all.
When I turn on English CC it doesnt show either subtitles. I need to turn it off and turn on to see the English
CC again.
This happened in Mac OS X 10.6.8 with Chrome, Firefox and Safari

Hi Cesar,
Sorry to hear about your trouble turning on the subtitles. I cant think of a reason why this might be
happening. Have you tried with only one movie and one subtitles file? Maybe the file is corrupt or there is
something odd about that particular movie. My old Mac broke down so I only have a Windows machine
now, and I cant try to see if it would work on my computer.
If a reader of this post can try to replicate your issue and confirm if it works, that will be greatly
appreciated.
Good luck!

Ron, I love these instructions. Very helpful. I have an embarrassing questionI just cant figure out which numbers to look at
to determine where the subtitles are lagging. Can you go into that equation a bit more? Sorry to be dense.

This is such a great tool! I am struggling with how to sync the timing. In your directions for shifting time in Jubler you
mention that by looking at the first few lines you see a lag of about 1.5 seconds. This may be a dumb questionbut sometimes
the obvious evades me. Can you tell me which numbers I should be looking at or adding and subtracting to get the correct
number to shift time?

Hi there, sorry for the delayed reply to your questions. For some reason, both your comments have been tagged as
spam. I just went through my comments list and noticed yours and marked them as not spam.
If I
understand your question correctly, youre asking how to determine if your subtitles are running ahead or lagging
behind the actual movie. Just play the movie for a few minutes, and mark the times (using a watch) when you hear
the first few phrases. For example, if the first phrase comes out at 1 minute 33 seconds after the beginning of the
movie, mark that down. Then open the subtitle file in Jubler and see what is the Start time for the first line this
should be the first column. If, for example, it says 1 minute and 32 seconds, you know that your subtitle file is
running 1 second ahead of the actual movie. Then choose to Shift Time in Jubler and select +1 second. After you
do that, the Start time in Column 1 for the first phrase should show 1 minute 33 seconds. Does this make sense?
Let me know.

Thanks for the great instructions. Question: why do you recommend getting subtitles at 25 fps? Most R1 Blu-ray/DVD
subtitles are posted at 23.976 fps and I know if I compare them in an external app like URU Subtitle Editor, there are
significant time differences. So, if Im watching/streaming a film in R1, do I still look for 25 fps subtitles?

Emil_M says:

Mikki, good question. I recommend 25 fps because that works for me on Netflix. I know most BR/DVD subs are
23.976 fps, so this could be a pain. You may try with 23.976 fps subs and apply a time correction using one of the
subs editors out there. It should work. Let me know.

First I saved subtitles to xml format with uft8 encoding. Changed the file extensions to dfxp.
Then
1.started playing movie.
2. Chose subtitle: English [CC]
3. clicked left button while pressing down alt + shift
4. Chose from menu: Load custom DFXP file and selected correct file.
There was no selection for custom subtitle.
Subtitles worked fine.

For windows users: To rename the file from xml to dfxp you can also press shift and right click inside the folder and select the
option Open Command Window Here
Then type
rename [filename].xml [filename].dfxp
Hit enter and Listo!
It is another option in case you cant change the windows option to show file extensions.

Hi Emil,
let me begin by thanking you for the excellent post. And of course thank you for following up on almost every comment.
I have been learning Dutch lately. So of course first thing comes to mind is subtitled movies and series your post had helped
me a great deal. However it didnt work for me at first. Perhaps due silverlight as you mentioned above. im using a macbook
pro and i followed your tips step by step till the last step (shift control alt M) command. that didnt do it for me. only after
going through all the comments here as someone mentioned shift alt click. that did the trick.
Heres my two cents when im asked to locate the DFXP file. Though its on the desktop i do not see it in the window. in that
case what you have to do is simply drag and drop it and it will appear. i hope this helps.
Now as i was watching an episode of prison break theres at least three seconds of lag between speech and subtitle. i tried
going and back fixing on shift time. But nothing changes. i tried that about 4 times to no avail. has anyone encountered this
issue before?
thank you

Hi Lehcen,
Thanks for the kind words and for contributing to the discussion on
this post. I guess the shortcut has indeed changed to Shift-Alt-Click.
I have to admit I havent watched Netflix with subtitles in quite a
while, so Im way behind the curve on all the new developments.
Regarding time-correcting the subtitles file, have you tried a really
big offset? Why dont you offset by 30 seconds to see if there is any
change at all? Just as a test.
What may be happening is that the subtitle file youre using has been
encoded for a different frame-per-second preset. This may be messing up
your time-corrections. Have you checked that? Also, have you tried
locating another version of the subtitles, from a different source? Is
this happening only to this movie and subtitles file?
Look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi Emil,
I was wondering how to add subtitles in Netflix, and I finally found a more simple solution : SUBTITLE VIEWERS. Those are
programs that play the subtitles in a box that you can put over any video. I use strViewer on mac, but there are many of those
subtitle viewers on PC too.
I hope this can help peoples getting around Netflix lacks of subtitles support

I Lehcen. I dont know which program youre using, but in srtViewer there is buttons to nudge the subtitle forward or
backward by 1 second. I use that in the beginning of the movie until I get one perfectly synchronised phrase, and after
that Im OK for the rest of the movie. That is if you have the right subtitle version for the movie, because some of
them seems impossible to synchronise.
I hope that help!

Emil_M says:
August 14, 2013 at 09:28

Hi Lehcen. In my experience, one of the trickiest things about synchronizing subtitles arises from the frame rate.
Sometimes the subs you have may be for different fps depending on the region or the original from which they
were ripped. You may have to account for this Im mentioning some tips on how to do this in my main post
above. If your subs fps is different from the fps of the movie youre watching, youll always get misalignment
even if you offset your subs correctly to sync the first few phrases in the movie. I hope this helps.

I did everything. On my MAC, when I selected the subtitle, it starts to play immediately and it wont show on the subtitle

When I cast Netflix Videos to my TV using Chromecast, the subtitle doesnt show on TV.
There is any work around to solve this?
Thanks!

ed says:

Hi Morris,
My understanding of Chromecast is that when you use the device, the video isnt playing from your Mac to your TV,
but streams directly from the online source. Therefore, your custom subtitle file is being by-passed.
However, if you can connect your Mac to your television with an HDMI cable, the subs should be fine.

There are a couple of things I noticed today regarding custom DFXP subtitles of Netflix .
1. The default font size of the DFXP files became very, very small. Shouldnt they be size 16?
2. alt+shift+click does not work for IE 11 on Win 8.1.
Any idea why these are happening?
