This specification cover minimum requirements which will be applied during the work
shop drawings, procurement, fabrication and erection stages.

1.2.2. This Job Specifications. The discrepancies between IPS and International Standards
will be finalized by manufacturer ;

This specification will be applied to tanks for storing butane and propane, as a
refrigerated liquid.
Each tank will be a double walled designed and will consist of low temperature steel
inner container, a carbon steel outer tank and a carbon steel domed roof with an
insulated aluminium deck over the inner container, suspended from the domed roof.
The annular space, between the inner an outer tank, will be approximately 1m wide, and
will be filled with perlite.
The suspended deck will be insulated with fiberglass blankets.
The tank bottom will be insulated with cellular glass load bearing black insulation
designed to support the tank and product weight.
The inner tank will be designed and constructed in accordance with the requirements of
API 620 Appendix R.
The inner tank will be OPEN TOP.
The space under dome roof supporting structure of the outer tank contain gas produced
by stored products.

The calculation of tanks will be confirmed by the designer of work shop drawings,
taking into consideration the seismic load and the wind load, according to IPS, location
and specific conditions.
The tank insulation system will be designed to limit the tank boil to rate no greater then
0,06% for propane and 0,04% for butane by volume per day of the tank content at an
ambient temperature, with the tank full, and in steady state conditions.
Tank instrumentation provided on basic design consist of :

Roof platforms will be provided to have sufficient space around the piping and
instruments on roof.
Stairways and emergency escape ladder will be provided to access to roof platforms.

the detail Engineering stage.
Exposed portion of carbon steel surface of tank shell and roof will be blasted and
painted.

A settlement monitoring system will be provided to measure and record inner and outer
tanks settlement during construction and hydro-test.
This construction monitoring will form the basis of continued periodic monitoring once
the tanks are in operation.

3. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
3.1.
This specification serve as a guide line and is intended to be used for design,
procurement and erection of storage tanks for BUTANE & PROPANE, designed
according to API 620.
3.2.

Outer tanks are not designed to support external pressure (internal vacuum) and the
maximum internal pressure design is limited at 15 psig. Inner tank is designed as per
API 620 including insulation load.

The tanks fabricator shall have the full responsibility of mechanical tanks design, for

The tank fabricator shall produce a detailed construction plan. The plan will provide a
summary procedures, plans and execution, methodologies to be used by fabricator for all
management, controls, labour, supervision, consumables, tools, erection, equipment
necessary to construct, mechanically complete, test and pre-commissioning of tanks.
The project construction plan will address the followings :

FABRICATION
4.2.1. GENERAL

All materials which are under fabricators scope of supply shall be accompanied
with proper, will test certificate (EN 0204 3.1);
The profile of shell plate shall be accurate within a tolerance of 1,5mm in length
and +0,8mm in width. Negative tolerance will not be acceptable, in addition. The
diagonals measured across the rectangle, formed by scrubbing lines 50mm from
each edge, shall not differ by more than 2mm. For roof and bottom plates with
lapped seams, tolerance according to API 620 are acceptable.
All shell plates shall be rolled to the correct tank curvature and all formed plates
shall be match marked with paint on the concave side with number as shown on
erection drawings. All rolled plates shall be stacked properly to retain the shape
and shall be handled carefully to avoid damages during transport.

Radial seams for annular plates of bottoms shall be butt-welded and shall have
complete penetration for the full thickness of annular plates, with a backing strip
of at least 5mm thickness;
Lap joints on rectangular and annular plates, for bottoms, shall be full filletwelded on the top side only;
Seams for steel structure, erected inside or outside of tanks, must be of seal
welded type.

minimize the distortion due to weld shrinkage.

Mode and Method of packing and shipping on site are to be mutual agreed on by
fabricator and CONTRACTOR prior to fabrication and delivery of the tank. At final
destination, the fabricator will inspect the shipment, as necessary, to ensure that
received items have not been damaged during shipment and that required items and
supporting documents have been received.

Shell tolerances.
Before welding of shell plates, a checking should be made to ensure that the
alignment of the plates and the width of the gaps between them are correct, if
there are any inaccuracies beside of tolerances described on standards the
correction action will be done. After completion, the shell not be out of vertical
line by max. 25mm.
After welding of bottom course, the distance from tank center to any two points
of the inside of the tank shell plates at tank bottom shall not differ by more than
1mm per meter and shall never exceed 25mm. The local deviation from design
form shall not exceed the followings when measured over a gauge length 1m :

Roof tolerances.
The differences in the gap between the shell and the periphery of the roof during
erection of roof shall not exceed 13mm from nominal gap.

There are not pronounced hunps or cavities causing by starting or finish weld
beads;
The surface of the weld is free from cavities and does not display any porosity.
4.3.4.4.
4.3.4.4.1. Butt-welds in the tank shell and bottom annular plates shall be
radiographically inspected. The percentage of radiographic inspection
will be in fully accordance with API 620, as minimum.
4.3.4.4.2. Radiographs shall be taken as soon as welding of joints in completed. If
repairs are required, these shall be carried out before starting other welds.
New radiographic examination of such repairs shall be carried out.
4.3.4.4.3. Welds defects.
Welds that are shown by radiography to have any of defects or
imperfections defined bellow, shall be judged unacceptable.

4.3.4.5.1. After welding of the bottom plates has been completed, all welds must be
tested to ensure that tank bottom is free of leaks by using a vacuum box.
Before the vacuum box testing the welds shall be thoroughly cleaned.
4.3.4.5.2. The weld for tank shell to bottom plates, shall be tested accordind to
requirements of API 620.
4.3.4.5.3. The fillet welds of shell on roof will be tested using liquid penetrant or
magnetic particle method.
4.3.5. HYDROTEST
The inner tank will be hydro-tested in accordance with API
4.3.5.1.
PNEUMATIC TEST
The outer tank and roof will be tested in accordance with
API 620, App. R, Sect. R9.
