Sida 3(14)

Part 1:
1. Explain what Innovation respectively Invention means and how these are related?
(3p)

2. Sketch the torque as a function of the speed of an (AC ) induction (or asynchronous)
motor. Mark interesting torque levels and the operation point on the graph. (3p)

7.

The above figure contains several errors! Suggest one solution for each figure (3p).

8. Give three examples of how to arrange for lubrication of a chain transmission. (3p)

9. Describe how to think and reason to design and dimension a torque limiting pin
(cylindrical pin inserted through radial holes in the hub and shaft) for a propeller shaft
on an outboard engine for a motorboat. The torque limiting pin should break and save
the motor shaft when the propeller is hitting something that causes a sudden stop. (3p)

Exam 2013-10-30, Part 2

Sida 12(14)

Part 2 :
I. You have been commissioned to design a connection between the drive shaft and blade of a
circular saw with dimensions as shown below. The blade is purchased ready made with
dimensions according to the figure below. The shaft is a steel shaft with a diameter of
20mm of material SS -1650. Shaft dimensions before processing the selected configuration
is shown in the figure below.
You should constructively to ensure that the torque can be transferred to the blade in a
satisfactory way and lock the shaft against the blade both axially and radially.

a) Report your new parts that you think are necessary, including a modified shaft, with
dimensioned sketches where it is clear how your design solution will work! This
means that you need to make sketches of the whole assembly as well as of the
individual parts (12p).

Report your assumptions!

Exam 2013-10-30, Part 2

Sida 13(14)

II. A flagpole that consists of a 10m long tapered plastic tubing should be attached to its
foundation in the ground with a screw joint. The flagpole is exposed for an aerodynamic
force whose magnitude when no flag is hoisted, is given by the expression:
1
2 A C D , where
2
= density of air (1,22 kg/m3)
v = wind speed;
A = force absorbing area;
CD = air resistance coefficient (approximately CD =1 when blowing cross a profile)
F =

The foot of the flagpole should be fastened to the ground by a screw joint (flange) of the type
shown in the figure above. The lower plate will be place close to the ground and the long
screws will be molded in rock or concrete.
Your task is to dimension the flange joint. Estimate from the given data which load case and
which load that is dimensioning for the flange joint.
Keep in mind that, if possible, to avoid fatigue of the screws. (12p)

Exam 2013-10-30, Part 2

Sida 14(14)

We have the task to design an industrial lift table according to the following principle sketch
where L = 1200 mm. We should be able to control the table height between 320 mm (min height) to
1040 mm (max height), with the help of a hydraulic cylinder. The hydraulic cylinder is connected
to a pump that can give a maximum of 50 bar.
The table should be a maximum load of 100 kg.

III.

a) Determine suitable placement of connection point (E ) as well as stroke length

for the cylinder with the condition that the wanted table heights can be obtained.
(6p)
b) Calculate necessary force and piston size for the hydraulic cylinder. (6p)
c) What type of joints is necessary at A,B,C and D to make the lifting table to work
as intended? (2p)

Report your assumptions!
