LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
I am rich today with autumns gold,
All that my covetous hands can hold;
Frost-painted leaves and goldenrod,
A goldfinch on a milkweed pod,
Huge golden pumpkins in the field
With heaps of corn from a bounteous yield,
Golden apples heavy on the trees
Rivaling those of Hesperides,
Golden rays of balmy sunshine spread
Over all like butter on warm bread;
And the harvest moon will this night unfold
The streams running full of molten gold.
Oh, who could find a dearth of bliss
With autumn glory such as this!

Sleep for brain

health: Learn
how to stop
insomnia in
its
tracks

By Sonya Sullins

e all know that sleep is important. But you might be

surprised by just how important. Restful sleep helps
to recharge your system, decrease stress hormones
and reduce fatigue. Would you be surprised to learn that its also
vitally important to protecting your brain from toxicity, damage
and even debilitating diseases like Alzheimers disease?
In a recent study conducted at the University of Rochester
Medical Center, researchers discovered that its during sleep that
the brain clears out potential harmful waste that builds up during
the day. It is one of the single most important things we can do for
our brains and our bodies.
As you sleep, your brain pumps spinal fluid into the brain to
flush out waste into the circulatory system and eventually to the
liver for removal. Because this process is very energy intensive, its
difficult for the brain to perform it during the day while already
overactive and preoccupied with performing everyday tasks.
Instead, researchers found that sleeping brains were able to
clear out much more amyloid-beta, the plaque-building protein
associated with Alzheimers disease.
Take home message: If you want to keep your brain healthy and
free of toxins, strive for 7 to 8 hours of deep, restorative sleep each
night. But what if you find that you are not achieving that. In fact,
many people are not.

Do I have insomnia?

You dont have to lie awake for hours past your bedtime to have
insomnia. The condition can manifest itself in several ways.
8

Natures Pathways | November 2015

Yes, you may have trouble falling asleep (known as sleep-onset

insomnia), but some people have problems staying asleep (sleepmaintaining insomnia) or waking up too early (early morning
awakening insomnia).
Sleep specialists may look for an underlying cause, such as a
medical condition or psychological issue. There are eleven classifications of insomnia, developed by the American Academy of
Sleep Medicine.
Do you feel like youre not sleeping even when you are? This
is one of the sleeping disorders that Ive suffered from. Its also a
common complaint in my office. Pseudoinsomnia is a sleep disorder in which people who suffer from it appear to have perfectly
normal sleep patterns, yet they are not achieving a restorative
nights sleep. Clearly this makes it hard to diagnose, and many
sufferers are not taken seriously when they seek help. When pseudoinsomniacs fall asleep at night, they feel as if they are lying
awake, anxiously trying to get some rest. Its crazy-making! But
theyre not imagining things. They really do have an unusual form
of insomnia.
In a recent issue of New Scientist, Ann Finkbeiner has a terrific
article about the people who suffer from pseudoinsomnia. Scientists discovered a pattern in the sleep cycles of those afflicted
that revealed sleep was being interrupted by brainwave patterns

associated with fear, anxiety and wakefulness. The study further
revealed that similar patterns of alpha, beta and gamma waves
show up in the brain wave patterns of people who suffer from
chronic pain and anxiety as well. Its possible that this always-on
brain pattern leads to a variety of nervous symptoms, including
being unable to get the benefits of a healthy nights sleep.

Finding relief!

It goes without saying that its a good idea for anyone trying to get
a better nights sleep to follow conventional suggestions, such as:
Go to bed and rise at the same time
Dont eat heavy foods before bed
Turn off TV and other electronic devices an hour before bed
Dont consume alcohol or caffeine
Exercise each day
Sleep in a dark room
Meditate
But, for many, these suggestions are not enough. Before you reach
for the Ambien or the Lunesta, try the Amethyst BioMat. Not
only is it an FDA-cleared medical device, its all natural, safe and
extremely effective. The healing effects of the far infrared waves,
negative ions, and amethyst crystals works synergistically to
restore health and sleep! The Amethyst BioMat has the ability to
actually alter your brainwaves and hormones, allowing your body
to relax and your mind to finally turn off. And, if you suffer from
pain, you will have the added benefit of pain relief. Often, chronic
pain can be the trigger to turn your anxiety on full blast. My
clients find they are finally able to enjoy deep, restorative sleep.

From grief to
gratitude

By Katie Hilst, DVM

ovember is a time of giving thanks.

When we have lost a loved one
(human or furry) we feel a deep
sense of loss that may make it difficult to feel
grateful for the blessings in our lives. Last
month I wrote about how our pets bless us by
being in a relationship with us. When we lose
that relationship we feel a profound sadness.
Our losses in life make us stronger and
help shape the person we are ever-becoming.
The losses give us the ability to understand
and empathize when another person is faced
with their own loss. We know what the deep

hole of sadness looks like from the bottom,

and how we have slowly crawled our way out
of the pit of darkness up into the light.
From that perspective, we can hold out
a hand to comfort and help others ascend
out of that hole.
From that perspective we know that
each day counts, and life is short and unexpected. We take nothing for granted, not
a sunrise, sunset, smell of freshly baked
bread, or gentle nuzzle of a furry muzzle.
We dont get over a loss, we incorporate
it into our daily lives, and living with loss
changes us. Great love is worthy of the grief.
How do we feel gratitude? Acknowledging
how much better your life was for the person,
or pet, that was in it. Remembering how
your life was changed for the good that was
brought into it from your beloved one who
is now gone. We can feel gratitude for simple
little things in life a hug from a friend,
stars in the sky, a rainbow. We can remember
and feel gratitude for the love and laughter
we shared with our loved ones. Scientists
have proven that happiness and a sense of
well-being is linked to how much gratitude
we have for the blessings in our lives.

I am grateful for:

Everyone who came to Remember-

ing Our Pets folks who shared their

stories of pain, love and laughter. You all
are heroes to me.
My cats (who are now all gone over the
Rainbow Bridge), Bowser who taught
me that cats are as good as dogs, Charlie

who loved french fries, and Mama Cat

who showed me how wonderful a gentle
senior pet can be.
My husband, Willie. He is calm and
loving during the craziest of times.
Lake Superior rocks the endless colors,
every one unique, every one a jewel.
My dog Jacks endless energy and barking.
Tip grunting like a pig when he is fed.
My Dad having a lucid moment when
he remembered our first dog, Kjas, even
telling me a new story about her.
My kids who are turning into wonderful people.
The sound of water breaking upon the
rocky shore.
My friend, Sue Ellen, who has helped
and supported me endlessly.
What are you grateful for? Email me your
comments at JourneysPet@gmail.com, and
I will share them in my next article.
Gratefully yours,
Katie

What are the

components of a
perfect
workout?

By Ellen Utter

irst of all, there is no such thing as

a perfect workout. Every body is
unique and requires basic breathing
and movement techniques, but the levels
of desired achievement vary.
Breathing is something we need to live
and is not always given the thought and
proper technique it deserves. The body
craves movement and stretch.
If you are just beginning a fitness
routine or have been away from exercise
for various reasons, you need to feel good
about the small accomplishments and
changes you begin to see and feel in your
body. Amazing or profound changes do
not happen overnight.

should know how to warm up and prepare

the muscles before the fitness activity. We
should think of our bodies as instruments
that need to be tuned up so they work at
their best. The key components of the
perfect workout are balance, variety, challenge and cardio strength conditioning.

ts starting to get cooler out, and soon we will be putting

but few really know what it does for them, and the benefits of the
BioMat. In my world every single day is BioMat day, but more on
that later.
The BioMat is an FDA-approved far infrared heating mat used

core of its technology is the combination of three healing components: far infrared light, negative ions and amethyst crystals. FDA
approval helps consumers who use it at a clinic, or purchase one
for personal use, receive their dollars back through their FSA or
HSA. Most importantly this means that there has been significant
research done on this device, and it does what it claims to do,
which is improve health and well-being.
Because of the far infrared heat the mat is deliciously warm,
and offers a wide range of temperature settings to accommodate
anyones needs or likes. As a result, use/purchase of the BioMat
increases significantly in the colder months of Wisconsin.
Lets briefly look at each component of the BioMat. Amethyst
crystals provide the far infrared heat, and are wonderful for relaxation. In my office this is useful in calming and relaxing even
Type A personalities, which allows the client to relax and not fight
manual work being done.
Far infrared heat penetrates the body 6-8 inches deep, getting
www.naturespathways.com

functions of the BioMat
is that it regulates your

into your muscles, your tissue, and warming you from the inside
out. Heating pads, blankets, etc. typically get just your skin warm,
and after 15 minutes of use can become pretty warm and uncomfortable, making the BioMat appropriate and safer for all ages and
stages of life, and not just us 2-legged people either. My kitties
stalk me, waiting until I get up, to steal the BioMat. If you want to
turn up the temperature and sweat out some toxins, detoxing is
also a function of the BioMat.
Negative ions are like antioxidants for your body. They help
with cellular regeneration, and help you feel relaxed and well. Ever
wonder why you feel so peaceful near a waterfall, or in the woods?
Its the negative ions naturally emitted in nature.
One of the most important functions of the BioMat is that it
regulates your core body temperature. Why is this important? For
most of my life my body temperature was always under 98.6. I
thought this is normal, no big deal, but boy was I wrong. What
I didnt know at the time was that when your core body temperature drops just one degree, your body processes drop by 40
percent. This includes your immune system, enzyme production,
hormones, etc. We all know that our immune system is our lifeline
in our body, and it is a well-known fact that stress certainly taxes
our immune system. This is why year round use of the BioMat is
always recommended for so many ailments: autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac, multiple sclerosis,
juvenile diabetes/arthritis, endometriosis, and the list goes on.
Having your immune system at tip top shape is ideal going into
cold and flu season. Even when I have gotten sick, the BioMat has
significantly reduced my recovery time.
The BioMat can be used during any healing session, but BioMat
is healing alone. Come lie on it for 30-60 minutes, and you will
leave with your own glow. Many clients who purchase for themselves for home use, often sleep on the BioMat, on a lower heat
setting. This encourages sleep that evades many of us, and allows
our body to do its own healing. The BioMat is like any alternative
therapy, the more consistently it is used the better the results.
There are so many ways that the BioMat can help you restore
health and well-being, but if you find yourself tired of being cold
all the time this winter, give the BioMat a try. I havent found a
person, or animal, who doesnt like it.
Tracy is a licensed massage therapist and Reiki master. Tracy has been practicing therapeutic massage for 10 years, dealing with a wide variety of populations and conditions. Tracy uses a variety of modalities including Cranio Sacral,
Raindrop Technique, Cupping, Reiki, Access Bars, and the Amethyst BioMat,
treating everyone individually, facilitating the bodys own natural ability to heal,
and restoring body & mind. She is located at 6425 Odana Road, Suite 1B in

healthyKIDS

Encourage a
love of physical
activity in
youngsters

ccording to the United States Department of Health

and Human Services, children and adolescents should
engage in physical activity for 60 minutes or more each
day. While fulfilling those requirements might not have been a
problem for kids who grew up before the dawn of the Internet,
nowadays kids are spending less time playing outside and more
time on their computers or other devices.
That reality is problematic for parents who want their kids to
embrace physical activity thanks to the positive impact that exercise can have on kids physical and mental well-being. Parents
hoping to instill a love of physical activity in their youngsters may
find that taking a more active role by exercising with their kids
is an effective way to get them off the couch and away from their
computer screens.

MAKE MORE TIME TO PLAY. Parents may already have busy

schedules, but finding time to play with their kids is a great way to
get youngsters to embrace physical activity. Kids might be reluctant to shoot hoops in the driveway if no one is willing to join
them, but they will likely be far more willing to do so if mom and
dad are willing to play with them. This is not only a good way for
parents to ensure their kids get enough exercise, but also a great
and fun way for moms and dads to make time for physical activity.

TURN ERRANDS INTO EXERCISE OPPORTUNITIES.

Many parents take their children along with them when running
errands. When such errands dont necessarily require the use of
a car, consider riding bicycles instead. Kids who otherwise dont
enjoy errands may now find them more fun, all the while fulfilling their daily recommended quotas for exercise and spending
quality time with their parents.
INCLUDE KIDS IN YOUR OWN ATHLETIC PURSUITS.

Parents might not be able to take younger kids along with them to
the gym, but that does not mean your youngsters must be excluded
from all of your athletic pursuits. If you have any upcoming athletic
activities or challenges on your schedule, such as a new recreational
sports season or community fun run or 5K, let kids tag along as
you train or practice. Parents of adolescents can inquire at their
local gyms if they offer discounted memberships to teens. If so, take

RECOGNIZE THAT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DOES NOT

HAVE TO MEAN ORGANIZED SPORTS. Some kids have

no interest in team sports while others do not have the athletic

ability to compete after a certain age. Parents who want their kids
to exercise more should recognize that there are plenty of ways
to be physically active that do not involve organized team sports.
Hiking; riding bicycles; swimming at a nearby pool, lake or ocean;
and even going for nightly walks are all physical activities that
people of all ages and athletic abilities can enjoy.
Physical activity is an important component of a healthy lifestyle.
While getting kids to put down their tablets and gaming system
remote controls may not be easy, parents who resolve to exercise
with their children might find their youngsters more receptive to
regular physical activity.

Believing your
brilliance

By Kirsty Blattner

hat if someone asked you what your most brilliant

moments in life were? What would you say? How hard
would you need to think about what your brilliance is?
We go through life, striving, comparing and fixating on our goals.
Sometimes this can be useful. What is more powerful and useful
is celebrating our brilliance!
The first step is defining what brilliance means to you. When
you have a definition, think of the first time you experienced your
brilliance. Think micro. Think of the wonder of passing a course,
taking a breath before snapping at someone, taking the road less
travelled or taking time out of your hectic day to breathe deeply.
Maybe you helped someone in need or made a gift or sent a card
to someone who deeply appreciated it. How do you know you
didnt change someones life with your smile or kind gesture?
When you have thought of at least 10 examples, think bigger.
Think of times when the going was tough and you got tougher.
Remember times when you have made sacrifices, felt like giving up
and instead you followed through and reached your goal. Think of
your top three accomplishments in life. No judgement. Bio-individuality means that different events and accomplishments are different for everyone. Feel into those three times and imagine the sensations, sounds and feelings associated with your brilliance.
What would happen if every time you listened to your Gremlin
Brain (you know, the egotistical mean voice that tells you you cant
live the life of your dreams) you told it to Shhhhh, and reminded
it of your brilliance! Imagine documenting your brilliance and
reminding yourself frequently about your capabilities. This is not
something we are taught, and if we embrace this practice we will
thrive. When we are reminded of our strengths, we are motivated
and inspired. What we focus on is what comes to us. We can
choose to focus on failures and limited beliefs, or we can focus on
our brilliance the choice is yours.
Isnt it wonderful to be reminded that you have a choice? It may
not be realistic to be brilliant. Think of your brilliance and do brilliant
acts 100 percent of the time, and what is realistic is that you have tools
to bring you back to your brilliance when you misplace it.
Tool number one: document your brilliance, draw it, video it,
www.naturespathways.com

record it, write it, act it whatever it takes for you to have something documented whether physically or mentally. Number two is
to anchor your brilliance to something you do habitually. Maybe
its brushing your teeth or saying a gratitude prayer. Maybe its
your morning coffee or daily walk. Whatever you do habitually,
choose one and as youre performing the habit link a memory of
you being brilliantly you. Over time this will become a new habit
and you wont even need to think about it.
How will your life change when you celebrate your brilliance
daily? Who in your life will be most effected by you achieving
your goals? Shine bright, live to your true potential and let me
know how I can support you to achieve your dreams.

A unique pair:
fitness and
autism

By Debbie Armstrong

any studies have linked individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to be at risk for obesity due to low
physical activity. A significant percentage of children
and adults with ASD have retained primitive reflexes that affect
not only learning but physical fitness. Their gross motor imbalances affect gait, posture, and the ability to correctly accomplish
tasks such as running, climbing, pushing and pulling. So as a
result, these retained primitive reflexes or movement discrepancies that start in infancy continue through adulthood.
Individuals with ASD often have movement deficits that are
clearly evident, and many that are less than obvious. According to
Autism Fitness expert Eric Chesen, ...fitness, and well-designed
exercise programs, are gateways toward some of the most crucial
developmental objectives for young individuals including selfEsteem, self-efficacy, independence and socialization.

What is fitness?

Fitness starts at birth. It is a vital part of development for every

individual. Learning how to move correctly and engaging in
physical activities helps our bodies and brains obtain the benefits
of learning new skills. The physical skills we develop as infants
and toddlers help us to traverse through daily encounters, such as
getting dressed, cleaning our rooms, climbing the monkey bars or
removal of the trash. Fitness should eventually produce a satisfaction and lifetime enjoyment of healthy movement and activities.
For individuals with ASD, fitness and exercise are often
disregarded as important life skills. There is a wealth of clinical
evidence and research that supports the remarkable benefits of
executing physical fitness programs for individuals on the spectrum and with other special needs.
Why do we need fitness programs when it is taught in our
schools? Well, in theory that is true, but what I have observed
over the past several decades is that general fitness has dropped
out of most Physical Education school curriculums in favor of
sports-focused activities. According to Chesen, Without general
16

Natures Pathways | November 2015

fitness programming as a cornerstone, two major problems occur;

1. Children do not develop the basic skills necessary to be successful, or even enjoy, sports and 2. Children who do not naturally
gravitate toward a particular sport eventually cease all physical
activity. For everyone fitness is a must, but for individuals with
ASD, fitness and exercise are often overlooked as life skills. With
the abundance of clinical proof and research supporting the vivid
benefits of employing fitness programs for individuals with ASD
and other disabilities, we need to start taking a proactive approach
to improve the quality of life for these individuals.
Whether fitness is taught in school or in the community it
needs to be a part of a proactive approach that is a part of life for
individuals with ASD. It is important to not only close some of
these movement gaps, but enhance a variety of skills including
strength, stability, endurance, motor planning and coordination.
It is also important to improving social skills, self-esteem, independence, and cognitive functioning. Improved cognitive functioning comes from enhancing areas of the brain as a result of
consistent fitness and movement activities.

Perfectionism
and
the holidays

By Lysianne Unruh

erfectionism, overwhelm and stress

are like a roving gang of mean girls
whose haughty posture and snarky
distain suck the joy right out of the holidays. Perfectionism, the leader of the pack,
tips the balance away from what is most
important to us: love and connection;
the celebrations and expression of joy;
and the feelings of calm and peace; and
instead turns the months of November and
December into a major comparison game
in which we consistently fall short.
As a recovering perfectionist, I am not
immune to the effect of perfectionism and
her gang; they can still take me down. My
ego deflates a tad when my mother notices
the cobwebs dancing in the corners of the
kitchen ceiling. My heart sinks a bit when
we bring home the Christmas tree, and
only then, do I notice a large bare spot in
among the branches damn it.
What is different now is the intensity with
which I react to such observations. In the
past I would have taken both of those incidents as an indication of a personal flaw or
failing. Cobwebs would have meant I was an
inadequate housekeeper. A less than perfect
tree would have meant I had poor judgment and had failed to make a perfect selection. Now, I more exuberantly embrace the
mantra a clean house is the sign of a wasted
life and we simply turn the tree until the
hole isnt quite as noticeable.
www.naturespathways.com

While there is somewhat of a fine line

between having high standards and expectations and falling into the trap of being a
perfectionist, there are some obvious signs
that perfectionism and her posse are stealing the show:
Fear of failure. One of the key places to
check is how you feel about yourself. If you
feel you are a complete and utter failure

for not being able to afford a more lavish

holiday filled with decorations or gifts, you
may be in the grips of perfectionism.
Fear of making mistakes. Perfectionists
often equate mistakes with failure and there
are so many ways to make mistakes over the
holidays: agonizing decisions around finding
the perfect gifts, the right type of decorations, and the correct holiday cards and so on.

tissue and cellular level. This month I will

be walking the fine line between simplification and truth as I try to explain ways
in which transmission of physical forces
such as pressures, body movements, shear
forces from flow of blood interact between
within the cells.
Fascia is the name given to connective
tissue. It consists of the structural protein
collagen as well as proteins that are modified and bound to sugar chains or other
substances that attract and stabilize water.
It gives shape to the tissues and provides
a scaffold that holds water, minerals and
nutrients as well as waste products. This
extracellular fluid is held in place by the
extracellular matrix proteins. It allows for
nutrient and waste exchange by passive
means. Waste products and nutrients move
from areas of higher concentration to areas
of lower concentration. Cellular metabolism creates wastes and the lymphatic and
vascular systems take it away. Within the
extracellular space there is enough room
for cells of the immune system and repair
system to migrate to areas where their
functions are needed to fend off infection and to fix damage. The proteins of the
extracellular matrix also provide binding
locations for cells so that they are anchored

in space. The cells primarily responsible

for maintaining the bodys structure and
integrity are the fibroblasts. When not
being called upon for repair the fibroblasts
are anchored to the proteins and have long
tendrils, which extend to attach to other
fibroblasts. The fibroblasts are responsive
to changes in tension on their tendrils
as well as to the chemical environment
around them. Communication between
fibroblasts on the basis of tension may be
1,000 times faster than communication by
nerves.
Cell function can change as a result of
just being compressed which changes the
relationships between proteins in the cell
membrane either separating or approximating them. Once the proteins change
position they may be activated creating
chemical reactions that form products to
send messages throughout the cell. Pressure may also deform the nucleus changing
how the DNA functions; thereby changing
which proteins are being produced by the
cell. Cellular functions can also be changed
by the drag of a fluid across the surface of
a cell. At an electron microscopic level
there are proteins or sugared proteins that
stick out from the cells surface. There may
also be cellular structures such as cilia that
www.naturespathways.com

stick out into the flowing fluid precisely to

assess flow and pressure. These structures
may act as toggle switches, again changing cellular expression by opening ion
channels or influencing protein functions
in ways that change how the cell behaves.
Everything described is necessary for the
body maintaining its internal balance,
which is a huge part of health.
When there are barriers to normal
fluid flow in the tissues waste and nutrition transfer are impaired leading to poor
healing, poor cellular nutrition, potentially
pain. Altered flow leads to tissue stress to
which the body often responds with fibrosis. For example when there is injury to
the lining of blood vessels or disturbed
flow, fibrosis can occur. For this reason
the newest generation stents for coronary
artery disease are paying attention to how
the shape of the stent disturbs normal flow
within the vessel. In areas of high tension
after injury there is a tendency for more
prolific scarring to take place. A study
which took tension off one side of tummy
tuck scars and did not alter the tension
on the other side found that there was a
significant increase in the density of scar
tissue on the side which had more stress.
It is the role of osteopathy and other
manual therapies to normalize tension
relationships within the body to promote
optimal health. Connective tissue exists
in all tissues of the body, nerves, muscles,
organs, bone, skin, etc. The more skilled
the practitioner in identifying and correcting tensions at all levels the better the
outcome for the patient.
Jed Downs, M.D., MPH, has been

medicine until pursuing his passion

PERFECTIONISM continued from page 17

Fear of disapproval. If you find yourself trying to be perfect and not rocking the
boat, or maintaining a tired tradition as a
way to protect yourself from the criticism,
rejection and disapproval of friends, family,
the in-laws, then you might be in the grip.
All-or-none thinking. If instead of
appreciating all that is abundant and
marvelous in your life, your focus this
season is on all that is lacking: the perfect
partner, or a perfectly done-up house, or
what have you your perspective may be
skewed toward perfectionism.
Overemphasis on shoulds. If you
find your holidays governed by an endless
list of shoulds serving as rigid rules for
how certain things must be for the holidays to be the holidays, then you may find
yourself getting a little too friendly with
perfectionism.

Once again, as a recovering perfectionist, there is nothing wrong with the desire
to have a beautifully appointed home, or
in taking time to find the most appropriate gift for someone, knowing what will
suit them to a T. What is important is to
take stock of the underlying meaning
you are creating and assigning when you
find yourself (or others) falling short of a
particular expectation.

Over time Ive found three

ways to extricate myself from
perfectionism and her merry
band of stress and overwhelm:

I choose to let my life, as it is right

now, be enough. I remind myself,
Life does not have to be perfect to be
wonderful. Unknown
2. I decide to not make a less-than-perfect
event mean anything specifically about
me. A favorite mantra: I am enough; I
have enough; I know enough.
3. I get curious. I ask myself the following grounding questions:
Does it really matter?
What is the worst that could happen?
If the worst does happen, can I survive it?
Will this still matter tomorrow? How
about next week? Next year?

Thanksgiving
in
a crazy world

By Ken-Adi Ring

ovember is the month that we celebrate our gratitude

and thankfulness. We enjoyed a terrific summer, an
autumn bouquet of colors and are heading into the
holiday season. How grateful we are to be living in a country that
we can still give of our time and our money to help others in times
of need, and we do have our share of them. Yet as I write this
we are in the throes of mourning yet another tragic mass killing
by an obviously misguided person. As bad as it is, this is one in
a growing series of many devastating acts of violence. America
holds the record of these crazy acts.
Reflect back on the first giving of thanks with English pilgrims
at Plymouth and Native Americans alike after landing, and after
the fights a.k.a. mass killings a peace treaty was made. It was
indeed a time of gratitude for the Native Americans helped the
English survive. Soon after a fresh ship of supplies came in. It was
known as the Harvest Festival in 1621. This peace treaty, one of

many, was unstable and did not last very long. As America became
populated by more Europeans and others ,there was a struggle
and in many cases blood baths, battles and wars over land. Native
Americans made many concessions and American leadership/
settlers broke many treaties. That was that!
The Native Americans have a saying, Mitakuye Oyasin: We
Are All Related, attributed to the Lakota Sioux language. In addition to the above, the phrase translates in English as all my relatives, or all my relations. It is a sacred expression of oneness

and harmony with all of lifes forms: the four legged, two legged,
winged, creeping crawlers, humans, animals, birds, insects, trees
and plants, and even rocks, rivers, mountains and valleys and
celestial beings far and wide to the tiniest wave or particle. All is
part of life even the seeming inanimate; a part of the one light
expressing in many seemingly separate forms, billions of years in
the making. For the most part Native tribes lived this motto. It is
not to say they did not fight battles over territory, etc. but it was a
more domestic and even playing field.
With the spiritual evolution and the advances of science we have
better tools and greater availability to self-reflect and possibility to
achieve understanding. Now that consciousness has reached this
self-reflective peak or apparent zenith of expression, what are we
doing with it? Does that oneness of relatedness translate into the
way we are in the world with each other? Are we acting, in the
world, respectfully, like we are related and of the one light expressing? Questionable. In the United States of America we are a politically frustrated people under siege in our own backyard with mass
shootings while we are spending trillions fighting wars abroad. Yet
people elsewhere want to flee their country to come here. Others
think this is a safe harbor. Its understandable, maybe so, because
of the even more profoundly violent, primitive and reactionary
third world hungry philosophies that are wreaking havoc in more
depressed countries. Namely I reference Isis and the Taliban in the
Middle East and disease issues in Africa, and drug wars south of
our borders. Courageous heroes such as the Nobel Prize winning
Malala cry out at great risk, Enough! The whole world then is

alerted, and made more aware. Remember not so long ago we had
some of those philosophies of white male dominance, supremacy
in the US, and still act out those tendencies in certain communities. These all are outgrowths of an underlying fear that there
isnt enough. FEAR, false evidence appearing real, then turns to
anger and resentment, etc. The way to eradicate this illusion of
fear and all of its descendants is to forgive and to love.
We need to spread the word of love as the only sustaining
reality. Love as is taught in A Course In Miracles, in the Buddhist
philosophy and the true Christ teachings. This is also proclaimed
loudly in our culture as in The Beatles and Moody Blues music
and other art forms. There is hope in the evolution of spiritual
dialogue, a plethora of teachings and spiritual practices are available, chief among those are mindfulness and other forms of meditation and self-awareness techniques/teachings to learn and to
share with others.
Those of us that can, please give a little more during this season
of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Treat your family, friends, neighbors and even your enemies with a little extra kindness and
inclusivity. Thich Nhat Hanh says, We are here to awaken from
the illusion of our separateness. An India salutation is, Namaste,
which means, The light within me honors the light within you.
Please say that to someone whenever you think of it.
Happy Thanksgiving!

A BUSINESS-MINDED BALANCE:
Shawna Peterson believes in her mission to give back
BY GRACE OLSON
When you think of successful businesses and the entrepreneurs who
started them, unfortunately its not often that the corresponding
thought is of selflessness and giving back. But with Shawna Peterson, thats exactly what you get. In fact, contributing and helping the
communities around her has become one of the biggest aspects of her
job, and she wouldnt have it any other way.
Its an important part of our business, Shawna says. And I think
anything youre passionate about can be done well. When youre enjoying what youre doing, its not work.
Thats not to say its simple or has always been easy, which can be
attested to by the sheer amount of time and effort that Shawna has
put into her career in retail and sales, and finding the perfect products
to offer as a part of Refined Beauti, the company that started it all.

22

Natures Pathways | November 2015

The Organic Skin and Olivaloe

Always interested in the beauty industry, Shawna found herself more
than doubling her business as a sales rep for a salon, and while doing
so discovered her true desire when it came to what she wanted to do
for both salons and the communities they are a part of. She expanded
and started her own business, Refined Beauti, six years ago, distributing products to salons.
Add in a family vacation and The Organic Skin was born.
Three years ago I went to Greece with my family on vacation. I tried
a sunscreen but was worried because it felt so light, and didnt think
it would protect me, Shawna explains. But I woke up the next day
without any sunburn and a nice glow to my skin. I couldnt stop thinking about how great it was.

www.naturespathways.com

Thankfully for us, she didnt. Exactly one year later the palette of Olivaloe products (the same brand as the now infamous sunscreen) showed up from Greece. With
that Shawna and The Organic Skin began and became the brands first distributor in
the United States.
The base of each Olivaloe product is the unique combination of organic olive oil and
aloe vera, ingredients with long histories of health-related benefits and long-lasting
beauty value. One hundred percent pure without parabens, propylene glycol, silicone,
Vaseline or mineral oil, and also sure not to test on animals, Olivaloe products have
become an easy choice for a healthier option when it comes to skin care.
Aloe vera is so nourishing from the inside out, Shawna says. Olive oil is very
moisturizing and the two ingredients combined just create a phenomenal product.
A line for both men and women, Olivaloe offers fragrances, shower gels, bar
soaps, hair products and a full line of facial products including night cream, cleansers and those focused on anti-aging properties and different skin types. Nothing in
the high quality line retails for more than $40, and that includes such luxury items
as Marigold Blueberry Mosquito Repellant.
Amazon and her website TheOrganicSkin.com have given Shawna the opportunity to sell directly to consumers but also to be a partner to salons and health food
stores as a wholesale business, promoting Shawnas passion for education and a true
partnership between herself and the salons she works with.
While simply providing businesses with the best of the best is great, Shawna
wanted to take it a step further and now develops motivational seminars for those
in the hair and beauty industry. Anyone is welcome to visit their classes and learn
color theories/techniques, trends in cutting and simply the knowledge of speakers
Shawna flies in from all over the country. She prides herself on the inevitable lightbulb moment that comes to hair stylists and consumers.
My favorite part of my day is that Im constantly hearing success stories within
the salons. Theyre touching the lives of a lot of people in the community, and the
Olivaloe products are doing great things, she says. Its a lot of work, but stories like
that make me want to get up and do it again the next day.
Not only are the products within the salon walls making a difference in peoples
lives, but so are the salons themselves.
Its the feel good part of the company. I absolutely love it and it makes me want
to do more.

Salons Making A Difference

Shawna has held community events incorporating products from J. Beverly Hills,
Olivaloe and Endless Beauty Bands. Each year she chooses a worthwhile cause and a
salon in the area as partners in creating an event to remember through her campaign
Salons Making A Difference.
I always recommend that the salon really think about whats important to them,
Shawna says. Is it cancer research, children, animals its going to make the event
even more special and successful. We can help them give back based on what their
needs are.
The need is great, but so is Shawnas drive and desire to help. From supplying childrens games to the cancer ward at St. Vincents Hospital, providing the hair accessories for tea parties and donating school supplies to a domestic abuse shelter, Shawna
and her team have helped the following causes (check out the sidebar for Novembers
event benefitting Pauls Pantry and how you can help!): Boys and Girls Club of Green
Bay, Golden House, Oshkosh Humane Society and Families of Children with Cancer.
Shawnas mission is simple but significant.
I really want to be able to offer a great product and also inspire businesses to stay
on their game while giving back to the community, she says. Making a difference is
what gives me the energy to keep going every day. Thats what I want to share with
everyone to help them love what they do.

A holiday
makeover

By Angela Kowieski

he holidays have arrived, and so has the

need for freshening up your style. We gave
a new mom a makeover for her first night
out on the town so she would be ready for the busy holidays with
a picture perfect new style.

The hair:

I started her hair makeover with an all-over color to lighten her

natural tone a bit to complement her skin tone and to give her a
pop of color. I used Organic Colour Systems red tones to achieve
this. We also added hair extensions to give her more desired length.
I colored them a bright copper red while her color was processing.

The style:

After rinsing the color and blowing out her hair, using Divinity Organics Super Moist, I applied the hair extensions using a

sew-in method. This application method is safe for the hair and
causes minimal pulling on the hair. I then curled her hair using
a 1 inch barrel iron and protected the hair with a thermal spray.
To give more of a going out on the town look, I pinned her hair
off to one side to add volume and to show off the bright red from
the extensions.

The makeup:

I started with priming her skin to prepare it for the makeup

application and did this with a moisturizing primer so that she
would have a smooth look to her face. I than applied a full coverage foundation using an airbrush method. For her eyes we chose
shades of purple and light pink to give her a brighter I look. I
then lined her lid with a liquid eyeliner and applied party lashes
to give her a fuller lash line. We than contoured her face using a
fruit pigmented bronzer and then added pink luminizing powder
to her cheeks to give her a natural glow. I finished by lining her
lips with a neutral brown and then used a nude lipstick so that it
wouldnt overpower her eyes.
This new mom is ready to hit the town and feel like herself again!

Floating
and
stress

By Greg Griffin

tress has received a bad rap. After all, our bodies naturally
use stress to deal with threats and danger in our environment. When faced with a serious or threatening situation our bodies release hormones, such as cortisol, that help us
respond to meet the challenge. Without this internal alarm system
we wouldnt be able to handle danger or important tasks that need
our immediate attention. After that stressful situation has passed,
our bodies should return to normal and go about business as
usual. But that isnt always the case.
Stress rears its ugly head all too often in our new, data-driven
society. The sheer amount of information, social interactions and
complexities we face is astounding, and we are still struggling to
manage it all. There are only 24 hours in a day but we somehow
find ways to consume more information and more entertainment
than ever before without giving our body and mind a chance to
rest and recover.
As a result, weve become overloaded with stress without an
opportunity to recover our bodys fatigue. We become irritable,
cranky and downright nasty. Over time this can lead to stress
burnout, which has serious health implications like heart
disease, anxiety disorders and even obesity. To avoid these serious
and life-threatening issues its important to practice stress-reducing techniques regularly.
Floatation therapy helps manage, relieve and even eliminate
stress in multiple ways. The soothing environment of a float tank
is completely stress free to the tiniest degree. Effortlessly floating
in calm, warm waters provides a soothing feeling that relaxes the
body and mind. Normal everyday stresses like gravity and noise
www.naturespathways.com

are greatly reduced, providing tranquil and restful surroundings.

Pain, a major contributor to stress, is minimized and muscles and
joints loosen and relax. Free of distraction, your mind is able to
clearly focus and work through more complex, stressful situations
in your life or use the time to reflect on happier moments. Mood
is elevated and a feeling of euphoria can last for days after the
session.
Science also backs up the positive effects. Research conducted
in the 80s showed that floatation therapy reduced stress better
than other popular methods of relaxation such as relaxation exercises, biofeedback and relaxing on the couch. These results were
later verified in the mid-2000s, prompting more research into
floatings benefits. Since that time, floatation therapy has been
proven to have positive effects on disorders such as hypertension,
headaches, insomnia, arthritis and chronic pain all contributors to overall stress. Currently, studies are focusing on floatation
therapys effect on fibromyalgia and mental disorders such as
anxiety, anorexia and depression.
In conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, floatation therapy is an
extremely effective way of managing stress. The next time you find
yourself stressed out, consider floatation therapy to unwind, rest
and relax.

Exercise and
ailments: How
exercise can help
prevent
disease

he benefits of routine exercise are plenty. Daily exercise

can improve mood, help reduce stress and make it easier
for men and women to maintain healthy weights.
Regular exercise also can help men and women combat or
reduce their risk for various ailments, including some potentially
deadly diseases.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become brittle and

fragile from loss of tissue. Though post-menopausal women are
most susceptible to osteoporosis, anyone can get the condition,
which can lead to fractures and other bodily injuries. But routine
weight-bearing exercises, including strength training, walking
and jogging, can strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis and
bone loss. A Nurses Health Study published in The Journal of the
American Medical Association found that women who walked for
four or more hours per week had 41 percent fewer hip fractures
than women who walked less than one hour per week.

approach to overcoming it. But prolonged inactivity may only exacerbate back pain. Men and women dealing with back pain should
always consult a physician for the best approach to alleviating their
pain. Dont be surprised if, during such consultations, your physician
prescribes certain back exercises. According to www.spine-health.
com, a Web-based resource for back and neck pain sufferers developed by a multi-specialty group of medical professionals, certain back
exercises can distribute nutrients into the disc space and soft tissues
in the back to keep the discs, muscles, ligaments, and joints healthy.

Heart disease

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart

disease is the leading cause of death in United States, while Statistics
Canada notes it is the second-leading cause of death among Canadians. Regular exercise can greatly reduce a persons risk of developing heart disease by strengthening the heart, lowering blood pressure and helping the heart function more efficiently. Even moderate
physical activity can have a profound impact on heart health.

Type 2 diabetes

A joint study from the American College of Sports Medicine and

the American Diabetes Association found that participation in
regular physical activity can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, a
potentially deadly condition, the prevalence of which has increased
considerably over the last several decades. The American Diabetes Association recommends that people who already have type 2
diabetes check their blood glucose levels before and after exercise
to see how their bodies react to different activities. Understanding
such reactions can help people with type 2 diabetes prevent their
blood glucose levels from getting too high or too low.
Exercise is essential to a healthy lifestyle. But while regular exercise can instantly improve your quality of life, it also can reduce
your risk for a host of potentially deadly ailments.

Lets quiet ourselves

as we proceed
through the metal
phase
of autumn

By Heidi Aschenbrenner, LMBT, CCT, NCBTMB, Member AOBTA

ovember is here, and autumn is in full swing! I can

recall the first few cool days after a gorgeous and warm
September, and hearing the many comments about
people not being ready for winter as if we simply skip over one
whole season and go from summer to winter. I do realize that in
Wisconsin, autumn can seem very short. But it is still here in its
own right, has its own beauty and character, and its own purpose
in our annual cycle. So lets take a few moments to both love and
embrace autumn.
Life is a cycle. Each day, each month, each year we pass
through phases as we work our way through the larger cycles of
our lifetime. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), autumn is
associated with the lung and large intestine meridians, with metal
and the emotion of grief. The five element theories of TCM
would be better reflected as five phases. The phases are: wood
(spring), fire (summer), earth late summer - a transitional phase),
metal (autumn), and water (winter). We can see this cycle in our
annual seasons, in our life spans from birth to death, and even in
each days cycle from waking until sleep.
The metal phase is a phase of purging and letting go, and of
quieting ourselves in preparation for the winter calm. It is that
time in early evening when we shut off the outside world and
focus on our inner circle and prepare ourselves for rest. It is
about purging the unhelpful parts from us and retaining the good
and healthy. The lungs and large intestine both do this for us on
a physical level with our air, our food and our qi. This purging
is what prompts the emotion of grief to be associated with this
phase. Whether our letting go is from a choice weve made, for a
transition into a new and exciting phase of life, or for a loss that
has left us feeling less than whole, we still must grieve as we let
go of what is not continuing on with us during this phase. To not
allow ourselves the time and freedom to grieve all of our felt losses
creates imbalance within these lung and large intestine meridians,
and it creates on overload of grief that is stuck within us. That
www.naturespathways.com

grief will eventually need to come out.

The metal phase is also a drying phase, drying out the dampness from the earth phase of the humid August days, another
purging of sorts. Imbalance in the metal phase will usually manifest as either too much or too little fluid in the lungs and/or large
intestine, resulting in colds, flus, bronchial issues, dry coughs, dry
skin, or constipation. Fatigue is another indicator of imbalance, as
is too much or not enough sweating. Not being able to grieve or
having inconsolable grief indicate deficiency and excess patterns.
Even being overly judgmental toward others can indicate an
excess of metal.
The best thing we can do during autumn is to take time to
reflect upon the changes occurring both with the season and in
our lives, allowing ourselves to feel whatever sadness we may feel
(no matter how small or silly it may seem), as we let go of the fun
and warmth of our previous season and whatever else is being
purged during this phase. Feel it, then let it go. The letting go is
key to keeping balance during the metal phase. Various acupressure/acupuncture points are helpful in restoring balance to the
meridians, but our patterns of behavior and lifestyle are what
create the imbalance in the first place. Establishing and then practicing healthy emotional patterns as we embrace each phase of our
changing seasons and changing lives is a great place to start. So go
ahead and let it all go! Then wrap yourself up in a blanket with a
warm cup of cider and enjoy this beautiful phase of the year.

Wisdom from
the
Andes

By Julie Hogan

hat is the first thing you think about when you think of
Peru? This biodiverse South American country not only
offers Machu Picchu, the Amazon, vibrant textiles and
exquisite food but so much more. Through sacred practices passed
down generations, the ancient indigenous wisdom of the Inca lives
on today within the hearts of many people. They are the farmers,
weavers, alpaca herders and chefs; perceived as everyday people.
Yet, through their deep spiritual connection to Creator, Pachamama
(Mother Earth), the Apus (angelic spirits of the holy mountains),
celestial forces and elements of nature, they truly are the healers and
teachers. Listening to the divine voice that speaks in the stillness,
over 400 types of intentional offerings and prayers for the health,
balance and abundance of the people, land and animals are created.
As spiritual farmers they tend to the continual cycles of loving gratitude by bringing in the knowledge of the cosmos and tapping into
the wealth of connectedness. We too have the ability to do this in our
lives and the following lists the key principles to this path of living.

Love

Everything stems from love and with love everything is possible. Love,
or munay, is the light within you and the Paqos or medicine people
know themselves and others unconditionally and compassionately.
It is woven into everything you do as you bring your gifts and light
to the world. By illuminating and speaking to the soul of everything
from the heart, we understand that everything is alive. There is no fear
or hesitation, only acceptance of the essence that is carried through
creations energy and expression. Lets say you have a passion and love
for food, the essence of what you do is cooking, the expression comes
through the thoughtful presentation, and the gift and light you bring
to the world comes from the nourishment you provide to the body
and souls of all who enjoy your loving creations. The same path of
love, then essence that shifts to expression and manifests into the gift
and light you share can be applied to everything we do.

Service

In Quechua, the mother tongue of the Inka, Ayni means reciprocity and right action through a balanced exchange of energy. It is a
28

Natures Pathways | November 2015

way of life that highlights how we are all connected as a supported

community of living beings. This applies to humans and nature.
As we work together we build strength and see the world as our
family. We operate from a place of cyclical service because as I
do for you, you do for me and we become united in the collective
instead of separated in the self. As a result, material importance
and gains fall away because that is only what is done to live and no
longer what we solely live to accomplish.

Simplicity

Simplifying life is easier said than done, but extremely essential. Learning to navigate our own energy and not getting flustered by emotional reactions to situations keeps balance in our
emotional energy. Allowing ourselves to move within the natural
flow reduces the obstacles we create when we complicate life and
react to something because its not the way we like or want it to
be. By getting out of our way, allowing, and honoring how things
are we can flow within the continual and endless natural order.
Concepts of time shift because little by little we stop multitasking
and gradually begin to focus and be present in all we do, captivating deeper knowledge.
How does the powerful yet simple vibration of loving service
express itself in your life? The answer resides in the stillness if you only
allow yourself to listen be you, be with you, the rest will follow.

What I say
when people
ask
for advice

By Dr. Laura Konopacki

eople often ask me for advice. Especially when in pain.

When things get bad, we want to know which rules to
follow to get well. Ice or heat? Go Paleo? Buy that new
mattress? Cardio or yoga? To make it more confusing, theres a lot
of conflicting information out there. So how do we figure it out?
Sure, there are some basic rules that are probably good for all of
us. I like the simple, common sense ones. Exercise. Stretch. Eat more
vegetables. Choose to relax. Get good sleep. Do things you enjoy.
And certainly there are times when we benefit from following
more regimented advice, perhaps from a trusted health care provider.
But beyond that, theres a great opportunity to realize that our answer
is uniquely our own, and we get to uncover and live it ourselves.
I ran across a great article recently by Dr. Lissa Rankin, M.D.
(see link below for the full article). In it, she observes, As an integrative medicine doctor in posh Marin County, Calif., I never
understood how my patients all health nuts, eating vegan diets
or juicing, working out with personal trainers or taking supplements, and sleeping 8 hours a night could be some of the
sickest people Ive ever met.
Have you ever had this experience? Of doing lots of the good
stuff and avoiding the bad stuff, and still not getting where you want
to be in life? Having worked around the globe as a chiropractor,
its been fascinating for me to see others go through their healing
process. Why it seems quick and easy for some, and much slower
and more difficult for many others. If the philosophy of chiropractic
is right that the body possesses an innate, inborn ability to heal
then what is it that gets in the way of that expression?
Dr. Lissas article eloquently shares her perspective on what may
be turning off our own natural healing abilities. She points out that
we can learn how to identify when our body has switched into fightor-flight mode: when the various stressors of life build up past our
ability to reset them; the body then stores that stress and switches
into survival mode. If your body never gets the message that its time
to come out of survival and move into rest, relaxation, and healing,
you can wind up dedicating lots of time, energy, and money toward
getting healthy with disappointing results.
A lot of us have heard of fight or flight, but not a lot of us know how
www.naturespathways.com

to shift out of it on a moment-by-moment basis. It involves tuning in,

learning the unique signs your body gives you that its in survival, and
consistently making decisions and changes that bring your physiology back to ease. It may involve making tough life decisions, facing
fears, or challenging long-held beliefs we have about our own selfworth. One thing is for sure: it will be different for everybody.
I see many people using incredible amounts of willpower to try
and make changes in their lives. Wouldnt it be great if we could
learn to first shift out of fight or flight, and then walk the healing
path that opens in front of us more efficiently with much more
ease and grace?

Squash
adventures

veryone is talking about pumpkins now in drinks, cakes,

pies, gelato, cookies and more. We all get in a rut with
serving pumpkin, butternut and acorn squash for the holidays, but there are so many types of squash with a wide variety of
different flavors. They range from sweet to bitter, juicy to meaty
pulp. All can be used as a side, stuffed or as a stuffing, soup, sauces
and pies, and other baked goods.
Dont be intimidated by the bumps, size or color of the wide
variety of this versatile vegetable. Squash is in the cucurbita family
and it has many genera with again as many species and subspecies. Identifying them can also be a bit challenging, so dont worry
if your market cant tell you the name. Many of them have names
in their cultures language. You have to go to the botanical name
to really know. Also, many people have kept their unique squash
traditions alive through seed savings over many years. Some have

Summer squashes grow easily and the results are prolific. Lots of
shapes, and easy and quick to prepare. Freeze well.
Winter squashes are great keepers. Cure the winter squash such
as Delicata by letting them sit for 10 days, at 80 degrees and 80
percent humidity with lots of air flow. This also effects the sweetness. They last a long time (months) in cool (50 degrees) dark
storage with about 50 percent humidity. Do not wash them. They
can also be cooked down and canned or frozen. Can be used in
savory or sweet dishes.

age has been used for centuries as a spice and seasoning in

cooking and as a folk or traditional remedy for hoarseness,
coughs, and sore mouths and throats. In ancient times it
even was thought to extend life. Sage was used as a fertility drug
in ancient Egypt. Physicians in ancient Greece used a solution of
sage and water to stop wounds from bleeding and to clean sores
and ulcers.
Today, sage is used as a folk or traditional remedy for mouth
and throat inflammation, indigestion, and excessive sweating; to
improve mood; and to boost memory or mental performance.
Sage is available as dried leaves, liquid extracts and sprays, and
essential oils.

What the science says

Sage has not been well studied as a treatment for sore throat, so
there is little scientific evidence to support its use for that ailment.
Two small studies suggest that sage may improve mood and

attention in older adults. Results of another small clinical study
suggest that a sage extract was better than placebo at enhancing thinking and learning in older adults with mild to moderate
Alzheimers disease.
Laboratory studies suggest that essential oils from sage may
have antimicrobial properties.

Side effects and cautions

Sage is generally regarded as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration and is approved for food use as a spice or seasoning. However, some species of sage contain thujone, which can
affect the nervous system. Extended use or taking large amounts
of sage leaf or oil may result in restlessness, vomiting, vertigo,
rapid heart rate, tremors, seizures, and kidney damage. It also may
lead to wheezing. Ingesting 12 drops or more of the essential oil is
considered a toxic dose.
Drug interactions with sage have not been thoroughly studied.
Sage can stimulate allergic or hypersensitivity reactions. Skin
contact may result in inflammation. Ingesting sage powder or
dust may cause breathing difficulties.

Raising your
vibration

By Jennifer M. Warner, MSE, LPC
and Holistic Psychotherapist

hink of a time when you were next to someone or in a

place that gave you an uncomfortable feeling. Or think of
a time when you experienced a sense of calm and peace
when around someone or in a certain place. Our vibration is an
energy frequency that we have inside of us and expand out to
others. All things vibrate energy, and these vibrations are sensed
and read by our energy systems. Likewise, we send out energy
vibrations that others can feel and read too.
So whatever you give, you also receive; whatever you give to
others will return to you in some form. All our thoughts, all
our beliefs, all our words, all our gestures are energy. When we
contract our energy, it lowers our energetic vibration and that can
eventually lead to illness and disease.
To start raising your vibration you can start by learning to love
all of yourself yes, even those parts of you that you dont like
or consider imperfections. Its loving all of your feelings, even the
difficult ones, such as anger, fear, doubt, blame, frustration, and
jealously. It is loving your insecurities. We dont change anything
through avoidance, suppression, distraction, judgment or resistance. Instead we change by loving ourselves. It is learning to love
all your thoughts, beliefs, feelings and experiences. When we learn
to love ourselves, we become empowered. We raise our vibration
when we open our hearts. Its having unconditional love for all
people, animals and our environment. When we love ourselves
and others we increase our vibration.
Even one positive and helpful thought can cancel out several
negative and harmful ones. Send love to all your feelings. Embrace
them for what they are.
When we start to love and honor our journeys, our past and
present, we raise our vibration. Think about the times when you
are in the presence of a healer, or someone who really listens to
you. One of the reasons you feel better is because you are in the
presence of someone who is operating out of a higher vibration,
and this then extends out to you and causes healing to occur.
www.naturespathways.com

We raise our vibration when we accept others for being themselves. We raise our vibration when we stop judging and criticizing
others. We raise our vibration when we are loving toward others.
We raise our vibration when we stop trying to change others. We
raise our vibration when we appreciate others, no matter what
they are creating for themselves. We raise our vibration when
we stop thinking in duality and polarity. We raise our vibration
when we send others loving thoughts. We raise our vibration
when we forgive others. We raise our vibration any time we send
love out, and out to even those who seem to be unlovable. We
raise our vibration when we stop reacting toward others. We raise
our vibration when we quiet the mind. We raise our vibration by
the language that we choose. We raise our vibration when we get
outside and notice all that is around us. We raise our vibration
when we are around children, animals and our pets.

The effects from raising your vibrations

With love as a higher vibration we regenerate the cells in the

body. What is internal becomes external. You will attract people,
circumstances, events and things that have a similar vibration.
When we raise our vibration we then attract more of the things
we desire into our lives. When we raise our vibration it raises the
energy of those around you. Everything is affected by our vibration. We start to feel lighter, an ease, and flow to life. We feel more
grounded and yet expanded at the same time.
So smile more, laugh more and play more. You can learn to live
in this state of higher vibration just by becoming more consciously
aware while trying some of the above ideas.

Simple ways
to trim auto
insurance
costs
................................................................

he cost of owning an automobile

extends beyond maintenance and
fueling costs. One of the biggest
expenses motorists must plan for is auto
insurance, the cost of which can vary
greatly depending on geography and
driver history.
But no matter where drivers live or what
their histories are, there are some simple
ways for drivers to save money on their
monthly insurance premiums.
REASSESS YOUR DRIVING HABITS.

Auto insurance companies consider how

many miles drivers drive per year when
determining the cost of an insurance
policy. Many drivers provide this information when opening a policy, but then never
update it when renewing or extending their
policies. If you drive less now than you did
when you opened your policy, notify your
insurance company and you might end up
paying less each month, especially if your
daily commute is considerably shorter
than it used to be.
CHECK

YOUR

CREDIT

RATING.

Another way to save money on your

auto insurance is to check your credit
rating and, if necessary, take steps to
improve your credit score. Credit rating
is another variable insurance companies
36

Natures Pathways | November 2015

use to determine
drivers premiums, and a good
credit
rating
can save drivers
a
substantial amount of
money on their
policies. If your
credit rating has
improved since you opened your policy,
contact your insurance company and
you might see the cost of your insurance reduced dramatically. Its also good
to periodically view your credit report
to determine if there are any errors that
are negatively affecting your rating. Such
errors may be inflating your auto insurance premiums.
HIT THE BOOKS. No matter how many

years you have behind the wheel, your

auto insurance company may offer you
discounts if you periodically take defensive driving courses. Such classes are inexpensive, but they may save you as much as
10 percent on the cost of your auto insurance policy. Young, inexperienced drivers
and seniors tend to benefit from defensive
driving courses more than other drivers.
CHANGE YOUR POLICY. Drivers also

can save money by making changes to

their policies. Raising your deductible
is perhaps the easiest way to save money
without affecting your coverage, and
such a decision can save you as much
as 15 percent depending on how high a
deductible youre willing to pay. Drivers
whose cars are older and completely paid
off might want to drop their collision
insurance, which pays you if your car is
damaged or destroyed in an accident. Such
insurance wont yield much in return if
your car is not worth much money, and
dropping it from your policy can save you
between 10 and 15 percent.
Auto insurance is a necessity for drivers of
all ages, but there are several ways to cut
the costs of insurance premiums without
affecting coverage.

Located just a few blocks from the
Capitol, Float Madison is the perfect
place to escape the stresses of everyday life. Choose from their Evolution pods or Ocean Float rooms,
each housed in one of their private float suites
and containing 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt saturated in 10 inches of clear, skin-temperature water. The saltwater solution allows you to float effortlessly, giving your body a much needed break
from the effects of gravity. With options to control
lighting and music, you can create the perfect environment for your float. Their state-of-the-art
float pods and float rooms are equipped with the
best water filtration systems on the market, cleaning the saltwater 3 times between clients to ensure a clean environment. Float Madison is owned
and operated by Greg Griffin, a Madison resident
who is looking forward to meeting you!

BLESSING EMPOWERMENT OF MEDICINE BUDDHA

Saturday, December 12, 9 am - 5 pm

By relying upon Medicine Buddha sincerely, living beings in these impure times can purify their minds and
improve their health and well being.
Medicine Buddha shows us the way out of suffering. His function is
to release living beings from outer and inner sickness by bestowing
blessings upon them. Even in this increasingly impure modern world,
through receiving the blessings of Medicine Buddha, we can purify
our mind, heal our heart, and find release from the internal pain of
the three inner poisons: attachment, anger and ignorance.
By practicing Medicine Buddha Sadhana sincerely, we receive a
special power of body, speech and mind, which we can then use to
help others through healing actions.
Gen Kelsang Gomlam will grant the blessing
empowerment of Medicine Buddha and give
an explanation of how to engage in this powerful healing practice. Everyone is welcome.
