Amar Bil Maroof and Nahi Anil

Munkar
It is the duty of every muslim to tell other what is good for him and what is
bad for him. I realize that many people don't aware of this responsibilty. I
am not pointing to a single person because other day i have listen from
somebody " As He says that meray sath meri qabar" Brother & Sister we are
not here for making only our grave good. We are asked by Allah for our
Responsibilty. We are living in a society where people are living on the way of
their heart. I am not here to crticize anyone of the member of foram. But to
tell them that what is our greater obligation. As we know there are no more
prophets after my beloved prophet (pbuh) Amongst the greatest obligations
are amr-bil-Maroof (ordering for acknowledged virtues) and nahi anil munkar
(forbidding from sin). Allah (SWT) says:

And there should be a group amongst you who invite

towards good, order for acknowledged virtues, forbid
from sin and these it is that are the successful ones (Ale
Imran: 104).
"You are the best community that has been raised
for mankind. You enjoin good and forbid evil and
you believe in Allah." [Aal-e-Imran, 3:110].
At another place Qur'an declares promoting good as an attribute of believers
and promoting evil as an attribute of hypocrites:

"The believers, men and women, are protectors of

each other: they enjoin what is right and forbid what
is evil."[Tauba, 9:71]
"Whoever amongst you sees an evil should change it with his hand. If he is
unable to do that then with his tongue. If he is unable to do that, then with
his heart, and that is the weakest level of Iman." [Muslim]
Concerned with good as it is, Islam gives this tremendous social force a
purpose. It must be used for promoting good, truth and justice and checking

evil and injustice. That is the essence of amr-bil-maroof-wa-nahi-anil-munkar.

And Qur'an declares it as the defining mission for this ummah:

"You are the best community that has been raised for
mankind. You enjoin good and forbid evil and you believe
in Allah." [Aal-e-Imran, 3:110].
At another place Qur'an declares promoting good as an attribute of believers
and promoting evil as an attribute of hypocrites:

"The believers, men and women, are protectors of each

other: they enjoin what is right and forbid what is
evil."[Tauba, 9:71]
On the other hand,

"The hypocrites, both men and women, proceed one from

another. They enjoin the wrong and forbid the
right..."[Tauba, 9:67]

The implications are clear. It is not that a believer will never commit a
mistake or be involved in evil. Only that he will never insist on it, justify it, or
promote it. He may fail to do some required good. But he will never be a
force opposing it. In the Islamic society sin is a private weakness, not a
public cause. It is for this reason that repentance for a public sin must also
be made in public while we must repent privately for our private sins. A
public sin may have encouraged others to do the same. A public repentance
will counter that.
Still in this life there will always be tendencies to deviate from the Straight
Path. And in the institution of amr-bil-maroof, the Community of Believers
has a built-in self- correcting mechanism. Consider cruise control in an
automobile. Once turned on, it keeps monitoring the car speed and pulling it
towards the set point. It does not mean absence of tendency to deviate from
the desired speed, only an effective mechanism for monitoring and
countering it. What cruise control does for car speed, amr-bil-maroof does for
the direction of the society.
This mechanism works at two levels. At one level it is the responsibility of
every member of the society. When we see a wrong we should correct it. A
very famous hadith declares it as an issue of faith.

"Whoever amongst you sees an evil should change it with

his hand. If he is unable to do that then with his tongue. If
he is unable to do that, then with his heart, and that is
the weakest level of Iman." [Muslim]
So if a person does not even feel bad about an evil, he has no faith
whatsoever. Similarly we are encouraged to promote good. One hadith
promises that a person who persuades another one to do some good deed
will get the same reward as the person he persuaded. At this level the
responsibility of every member of the society is for his or her own sphere of
influence: family, friends, colleagues, neighbors. When taken together these
spheres would encompass the entire society.

"Let there arise out of you a group inviting to all that is

good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is
wrong. They are the ones to attain success."[Aal-e-Imran,
3:104]

Importance of Da`wah (Preaching) In

Islam
The word Da`wah generally means Calling people towards Allah and
His instructions. The practitioner of preachingknown as Da`i. This act is
commonly thought of being limited to religious matters only like Oneness of
God, reading the Holy Quran in Arabic, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) being the
last Prophet, believing in prophets and day of judgment, offering Salah etc.
rather it is the complete package of advocating in favor of what is good. It
includes both spiritual and secular Islamic instructions for sake of betterment
of common people.
It could be of two types: first, it can be the act of proselytizing, where the
preacher tries to convey its message of religious convictions to non Muslims
through convincing dialogue. Second, it can be for the purpose of reminding
the present Muslim Ummah about their duties and responsibilities as per
commands of Quran and Prophet`s (PBUH) Sunnah. In any case, a Da`ee
(Preacher) must have sincerity, complete knowledge and wisdom, patience,
constancy, modesty, empathy and above all it must be a great devotee of
advocated teachings.

Hazrat Abu Saeed Al-khudri has reported that the Holy

Prophet (p.b.u.h) had said that whenever anyone of you
might see some undesirable thing he should change it by
hand.If not possible by hand then by his tongue and if not
by that then he must condemn in his heart and it is the
weakest form of faith [SAHI MUSLIM]
The substantial significance of Da`wah can be determined from the following
facts:

Fulfillment of Obligation

Although it is a moral responsibility of any individual to spread a word of

uprightness and try to stop others from unlawful activity, but for a Muslim, it
is not only its task from ethical point of view, but also a must do action from
a sacred standpoint as well. Allah Almighty directs us to take on this very
deed in the Holy Quran as:

And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to

[all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding
what is wrong, and those will be the successful. [Quran,
3: 104]
Carrying out Job of Prophet (PBUH)
All the Prophets whom Allah SWT sent down on earth, had one basic task to
do, and that was Da`wah or call their locals to remembrance of One God,
adoption of the ethical and avoidance of the immoral, which makes it the
best occupation to do. The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah was not restricted to a
single nation; rather He was given a profession to transform lives of the
whole world, which makes us necessary on us to invite everyone en route to
Islamic understanding of the world, irrespective of their religion. The Glorious
Lord has regarded this act being the way of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) in the
Sacred Book as:

Say, This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and

those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of
those who associate others with Him. [Quran, 12: 108]

Being the staunch disciples of the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), it becomes
our liability to take up the good work which He has left behind, if we call
ourselves His true lovers. The value of this deed is in our lives is evident from
the fact that Mus`ab ibn Umair (R.A) was sent to Yathrib (Madina) by the Holy
Prophet (PBUH) to educate them about the Islamic revelations. It means we
should consider bringing people towards righteousness as accomplishing the
finest work to do, because of its connection with our beloved Muhammad
(PBUH).

Earning Great Rewards

Since preaching goodness is a virtuous endeavor, so it also comes up with
receiving huge returns from Allah SWT. Just like one gets eligible for
obtaining His bounties as a result of spending in the way of the Almighty
Lord, e.g. for purpose of building of a mosque, or for Jihad etc. same way
preaching towards Allah`s instructions also serves as a source of getting
great rewards from Him. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) emphasizes on impact of
Da`wah as:
Whoever calls others to guidance will have a reward like the
rewards of those who follow him, without that detracting from their
reward in any way. And whoever calls others to misguidance will
have a burden of sin like the burden of those who follow him,
without that detracting from their burden in any way. (Muslim)
It means that incentives from this action are continuous in nature, as
enlightening one soul would result in the illumination of its future
generations. A person gets the same reward as does its follower of Islamic
teachings, e.g. if they pray five times a day, person who has informed them
gets the same reward, and this process continues till they remain on the
right path.

Strengthening of One`s own Faith

Transforming others` lives positively is no doubt a great achievement for any
one, but Da`wah also helps in constant purification of one`s own soul and
avoidance of satanic attacks when it learns about new Islamic lessons for the
sake of teachings them to others. As, Da`ee needs to have a strong hold on
every perspective of a given topic that it is lecturing others about and also
act as an example, so by constant research of the religious and Sunnah
instructions, that particular instructor improves its own knowledge and tends

to know about newer issues. So, this process in turn perks up one`s own
devotion to teachings of Islam.

Being Successful in the Hereafter

As discussed above, inviting people towards right and refraining them from
wrong is one`s responsibility as a Muslim, and we have strong conviction
about being asked on the Day of Judgment about all of our duties like raising
of children, spending of wealth, religious obligations etc. so we should be
aware of completion of the task of Da`wah as well. As the Holy Prophet
(PBUH) one said about this matter as:

Whoever is asked about some knowledge that he knows,

and then he conceals it, he will be bridled with bridle of
fire. (Tirmidhi)
The above stated Hadith shows that it is our job to explain to others about
the useful information we have, and bring them to light. Speaking of a single
good thing is also important, it might well be possible a subject which looks
mere to us, it may transform life of another altogether. So, we should not
hesitate from preaching about any matter which has had a positive effect on
our lives.
In short, Da`wah is a great act from Islamic perspective, which benefits both
the parties, i.e. the ones who preaches, and the one who is being sermonized
about the good, and leads to successful life on earth and the hereafter.

HOW TO PREACH
Islam as a perfect religion and a way of life gives us the best guidance on
how to invite people to Islam in the most effective way. To be
successful Dut, Allah I commands us to invite people to Islam
with hikmah (wisdom) and beautiful preaching.
Allah I says:
Invite (all) to the Way of your Rabb (Cherisher and Sustainer) with
wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that
are best and most gracious: for your Rabb knows best, who have
strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance. (16:125)
The above verse serves as the approach or methodology of doing Dawah
based on the Quran, which is the Sunnah of the Prophet (s.a.w.s). We, Dut

must follow theProphet (s.a.w.s) how to invite people with hikmah and
beautiful preaching.

Let there arise out of you a band od people inviting to all

that is good, enjoining what I right and forbidding what is
wrong .They are the ones who attain felicity. ( SURAH ALIMRAN : 104)
The following are the guidelines how to do Dawah with hikmah and
beautiful preaching:
1.

Pray and aspire for eloquent speech and wisdom

2.

Speak with confidence

3. Be friendly and show kindness in your approach

4. It is always best to invite people to Islam with kind words instead
of evil words or bad
language
5. Say the fundamental or best teachings in Islam and refrain from
nonsense talking
6. Speak good words and do not insult
7. Avoid vain discussion, argumentation and debate
8. Control anger and refrain from having dispute or quarrel
