Role of a Teacher

Teaching as a career requires a lot of determination and devotion; some people

refer to it as a calling, whereby, those called must portray all their ability and
strength to support others achieve knowledge. Therefore, what actually entails a
good teacher? Paul Coelho describes this in its simplest form " it isn't someone
who teaches something, but someone who inspires the student to give of his/her
best in order to discover what he/she already knows" .A good teacher should
portray an outstanding communication skill both oral and written; students expect
to learn from a teacher. Therefore how a teacher communicates both verbally and
written signify a lot in a learning environment. It is what marks a difference between
an efficient and effective teaching.
A teacher should be supportive to his students since the students rely upon them in
various ways like academic and social development. Therefore as a teacher, one
should show support through encouraging student academic development, like
arranging and ensuring proper coaching and mentoring sessions to help nurture
skills and talent among students. They should share educational resources that can
assist the students in various fields. A teacher should give students the support
they require in nurturing their academic prospects by helping them improving their
weak areas and assessing their strengths. This also helps building a good studentteacher rapport that can assist in exploring the students interest and abilities and
marks a personal touch which makes the job of both easy.
A teacher also plays a role of a planner; planning is a significant tool in any
educational institution. Before all else, teachers must develop a flight plan. Like
any good flight plan, it must lay out a destination and the path to that destination.
This is also where experienced teachers mark a difference. A teachers role as a
planner entails arranging for personal tuition for his/her students to enable both
individual and academic development. This can be achieved by holding
symposiums, sports, community outreach program that are geared towards
developing the student academic background.
Teachers are also good observers. Observation is one of the most powerful step
towards changing teaching practices. Daily observation reveals a wealth of
information about students. Observation is however incomplete if no proper
documentation and notes are taken along-with. Teachers understand how
significantly this contributes to maintain a positive relationship among students.
Through observing, a teacher is also to exercise counseling roles to their pupils.
A teacher should provide an educative role to their students, given that a school is a
place of learning a teacher should be in a position to dispense quality education to
their students. A good teacher should coach their students both personal and
interpersonal relation. They should equip their students with knowledge that is

productive in achieving their academic goals and obligations. Also, a teacher should
teach their students co-curriculum activities and allow them to participate in
physical education.
When students are at school, teachers act like parents, therefore a teacher is
recommended to dispense care. They should take full responsibility for their
students health and behaviors; moreover they should care for their security as well
as safety from accidents. A teachers role should ensure their students are well
protected from influence that could affect their education like drug abuse, sexual
harassment among others
The final role of a teacher- to evaluate- is vital to a teachers success. Just like most
fields of endeavor have some measure of success, so does teaching. The difficulty
with evaluation is that it is often confused with assessment. Assessments are used
as tools to evaluation. An experienced teacher knows that. Evaluation process is not
only about scores and grades but also to take course of actions that would help the
students to reach closer to their goals and help them shape their future.
Finally, it is imperative for a teacher to practice the aforementioned roles to
dispense quality service that will assist in the development of their students
academic and social performance. A teacher recognizes the importance of planning,
implementing and evaluating and ensures a timely execution of each.

Future role as a Teacher

Teaching as a career requires transformation, owing to the changing need of
teachers and students, considering, a good teacher should be in a position to
perform his role with utmost agility. In order to increase effectiveness and quality
education, the audio learning should be incorporated into the teaching of
languages. Given that, students are able to learn various information such as
language through audio/video, developing their skill in responding effectively to
teachers question ,this method will boost student morale to answer the question
since they acknowledge each time they provide a positive response. As a future
teacher using audio/visual tools in teaching will ensure an instinctive and habitual
response from the student increasing their formality with the area of study.
As a future teacher, I will draw emphasis in the use of suggestopedia to enhance
learning. It is evident that music, curriculum activities, meditation, and yoga help
boost students concentration and absorption of information and new ideas. When
the mind is relaxed, it increases the students performance, so that, they can learn
new information faster and more efficiently. This will enhance their class

participation and concentration to absorb new ideas and knowledge. The use of
song and activities like yoga are proven techniques that help to develop and expand
learning environments.
Another role as a future teacher will be to ensure efficient use of total physical
response among students to ensure they are familiar with learning information and
respond effectively. TPR has been proven effective in assisting students understand
and interpret information through a physical response. Provided that most of the
students are good at physical response rather than intellectual, this method of
proves useful in increasing their understanding and interpretation of information.
A teacher should ensure their students are well endorsed with the use of modern
technology such as the internet, the web, and other relevant educational
technology. I am blessed to work in the field of IT during my recent years which has
made my vision of digital technology even more powerful. Education is complete
when every person has an access to it. Digital technology helps making knowledge
accessible at all times despite of differences in time zone. It also provides an
affordable education and with that a big cloud space where people irrespective of
discrimination at all levels share and communicate with each other. I have myself
been an online learner and a teacher at the same time and have always valued the
benefits digital and blended learning offers. As an example , I was a part of a
voluntary project to a rural village area where bright minds ready to inspire the
world were just in search of an education system that would turn their dreams a
reality and their villages none less competent with cities in their outskirts. Experts
knew that virtual classroom would change things there and I was happy to be a part
of such a success.
As a future teacher I will focus on providing structural advice, monitoring,
assessments and evaluation. I would also ensure that I don't limit my students to
the inside of a classroom but help them open doors to the world of opportunities. An
example of that is how schools and universities are nowadays proposing
collaborations with companies in business. This helps students be self-evaluators
and choose the road of a successful career which has sadly been a confusion to
even people of my age. Choosing the right career in the beginning always pays off
later. I would like to be such a counsellor and mentor.
I want to fill my students with diversity so they can acknowledge differences inside
and outside the classroom . I plan to have lessons on cultural differences. The
purpose of these lessons is to help students become tolerant of everyones
differences. This will also show the bilingual/ESL students that knowing a language
is something they should be proud of.
I am also a believer in how differentiating instruction can be sometimes helpful. I
consider it my job to make sure that I meet the needs of every one of my students
whether they are ESL, dyslexic, or hearing/seeing impaired. Differentiating

instruction also means that my lessons can be tailored for the students that are
having a difficult time understanding the concept, or for the students that need
more of a challenge.
I would like to conclude this by inspiring words of H.L. Mencken who once said "The
best teacher is not the one who knows most but the one who is most capable of
reducing knowledge to that simple compound of the obvious and wonderful".
