PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

02

Welcome to our 95th International

Exhibition! Heartfelt congratulations to
all participants and award winners.

Our 2015/2016 China Exchange, chaired by

former president Linda Doll, is now also well
underway. Please stay tuned!

This year, with so many incredible artists

submitting, you can imagine how difficult it
was for our three jurors Judi Betts, David
Poxon and Soon Y. Warren to select only 71
paintings from more than 1000 entries. It is
never an easy task to turn away numerous
highly-skilled and talented artists simply for
lack of space, but at some point, there is no
alternative. We are grateful to our jurors for
their expertise in selection.

This years NWS International Exhibition is

truly a remarkable 95th Anniversary milestone
with its success due in no small part to the
seamless cooperation between our entire
dedicated Board and the exhibition committee.
Each Board member did their prescribed job
so well there was little left for me to do other
than to watch with amazement and to assist
in extending our outreach even further. I am
honored to serve alongside all of you and look
forward to continued NWS growth.

As for Awards, a special thanks goes to Valli

McDougle for securing more than $40,000
in cash, purchase and merchandise awards
including the new Katharine Cartwright
$3,000 Vanguard Award. Because we offer
so many awards for excellence, Peter Frank,
our awards juror, had his work cut out and we
applaud his great discernment in selecting
this years NWS winners.
In our Studio Gallery, next to the main
Exhibition, you will also see invited Belgian
artists from the Eau en Couleurs. These artists
represent the final leg of last years second
NWS/European exchange program. We thank
Catherine De Ryck, David Poxon and Penny
Hill for making the second of many planned
international reciprocal events possible.

The NWS was founded in 1920 as the

California Watercolor Society, changed
its name in 1967 to the California National
Watercolor Society, then in 1975, simply
became known as the National Watercolor
Society. Now, in 2015 as we extend our
participation in exchange exhibitions from
Europe to China, we have truly become an
international organization. But none of these
new achievements and opportunities would
be possible without all of our loyal associate
artist members, signature artist members and
sponsors. Thank you all. We are deeply grateful
for your continued participation and support.

JUROR of AWARDS

Peter Frank

03

In my role as Awards Judge for the National

Watercolor Societys 95th International
Exhibition, I found my usual juror job
description profoundly altered. Others had
culled through a wealth of submissions from
around the world, ultimately bringing the
superior seven percent to the fore. It befell
me to distinguish the best of the best and
to do so with, shall we say, no small prejudice.
There were plenty of awards to hand out,
but they were of all different sizes, sources,
purposes, and descriptions. Each had to
be bestowed upon a different artwork for
overlapping, but not necessarily cohesive,
reasons. Some prizes came with caveats
as, indeed, did some artworks. It was easy
enough to make my own general selection
out of the shows selection in a pleasant
version of window-shopping, which is how I
began the award selection process. But then
parsing who got what thats where things
got interesting.
What did I seek to reward? Id daresay the
same things the shows initial judges did: a
coherent relationship between admirable
technique and provocative subject matter.
(And yes, even the non-objective works have
subject matter, as abstracted or inferred as
it may be.) Virtuosity was not honored for its
own sake, but for the sake of the service it

was not applauded (or, for that
matter, disdained) because it
moved me, but because its
visualization stuck with me.
The water media are in many
ways the most magical of all
visual media, their limitations
promising little more than selfeffacing intimacy or secondary
objecthood and yet yielding universes as
broad and, yes, as intimate as oil painting or
sculpture or prints. These universes emerge
in the hands of those who know what they
are doing, why they are doing it, and how
they can best do it. The mystique of the
water media is no less persuasive than that
of more prominent disciplines; the audience
only comes later, all too incidentally, to its still
small voice. The biggest surprises come in
the subtlest packages.

As a team, we brought to the table our lives of studying and painting, traveling, exploring in
museums, and listening to music and all of natures sounds and colors. With our own emotions we
responded to each artists personal symbolic language. I was fascinated with the large array of
diverse methods and thoughts represented. I would have been pleased to see a larger exhibit in
the end. I am excited, of course, with our selections. The viewers may question our decisions, but
we each voted for the creative images and color chords that ignited our hearts.

I am honored to have been selected to work with the other jurors. We freely discussed our
thoughts and wishes. I hope you will be surprised, entertained and enlightened as you view the
entries. I feel we chose a thought-provoking group of paintings that people will not only look at
but also look into.
- Judi Betts
It has been a real privilege and honour to be invited to participate in the 2015 NWS selection
jury. The volume of entries and standard of work has been as high as I expected. All paintings have
been scrutinised in detail and many discussed and debated at length by the Jury of Selection. Its
not been easy, but it has been a pleasure. To pass judgment on my fellow artists work is a strange
and public ordeal in a way, knowing that there will be many disappointed painters who did not
make the show this time round. For those who missed out, I offer some encouragement for the next
event. We have all felt the pain of not making it into the final show, it does hurt I know, but such is
the wondrous journey we share as watercolour painters. Please remember that we all take many
steps on a long unending road, and the road has many twists and turns.
Congratulations to this years selected painters. All entrants will enhance and enrich the
reputation of the NWS which now has a world-wide following. Please enjoy the show.
- David Poxon

It was exciting and challenging to participate as one of the 2015 NWS Jury of Selection. I congratulate
all of the artists whose paintings were selected. Also, I want to share my feelings with those who are
disappointed by not being selected. As you all know, not being selected this time doesnt mean that your
painting is not good enough. After the experience of jurying a great volume of entries, I felt better and
more lighthearted about the paintings I didnt get into shows in the past. If I could have had a second
turn to select paintings, I likely would have chosen different ones without thinking about it twice. The split
second of choosing a painting connects with my emotional and spiritual journey at that very moment.
Also, seeing the unique perspective of each artist, with an emphasis on the surprising aspects of
otherwise ordinary subject matter, is always invigorating and inspirational. I appreciate how and why one
paints rather than what one paints. My goal is to approach each painting with a fresh mind, without any
preconceived prejudice, to minimize the bias and subjectivity of human nature on the selection process.
I appreciate anyone who dares to put ones heart on paper to share with others as I try to do with every
painting. It was an honor and privilege, as one of the jurors, to be part of this wonderful exhibition,
celebrating the versatile paintings in watercolor created by colleagues who share my passion.

This year our Board has unanimously voted

to confer our prestigious Arts and Humanity
Award on fine artist Joe Miller, founder of
Cheap Joes Art Supplies. But this award is not
being given solely because Joe is a generous
business man with an innovative art store. If
that were our criteria, we would have needed
to divide this award equally with all of our other
generous donors who run equally unique art
supply stores. This years acknowledgement
is meant to highlight Joes good spirit and
sharing character.
Here is a partial list of actions taken by
Cheap Joes charity which demonstrates
his outstanding contributions to society:
Joes charity sends monetary donations to
the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life
and The United Way.

Cheap Joes art supplies are given to

summer camps for children with cancer,
epilepsy, auto-immune diseases, diabetes
and autism as well as to orphanages and
foster homes.
And finally, Joe is very proud of his Brushes
for Vincent Program which gives art material
to thousands of children in crisis situations
such as cancer centers, burn centers and
to inner city children. The program is aptly
named after Vincent Van Gogh whose brother
Theo supported him throughout his entire life.
Joe Miller has been Theo to thousands of
children and adults.
For his generosity of heart and spirit, the
NWS Board is very proud to present the 2015
NWS Arts and Humanities Award to Joe Miller.

Both my ethnic and cultural backgrounds serve as root sources

of my work. The awareness and acceptance of humankind universal,
following lifes awesome rhythms with dignity in pain, joy, poverty,
and often jubilation cause me to paint.

At the age of seven he was hospitalized with a

bone disease which nearly took his life. While
I was in the hospital, there was an older man
in the bed next to me. I cant even remember
his name, but he was a cartoonist and got me
interested in drawing. Before he died he asked
me to never turn drawing loose. That chance
encounter and introduction to art would change
his life forever. As his interest in drawing
developed he found he could escape into his
art. He painted his first watercolor at the age
of twelve. In 1942, following his high school
studies, he was awarded a full art scholarship to
Xavier University and earned a bachelor of fine
art degree. In 1952 he returned to academia
with a full scholarship to study at Chouinard
Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. He
graduated with an MA in advertising design.
In 1949 he began exhibiting. His work was
featured in major exhibitions at the Butler
Museum of American Art, Carnegie Institute,

Art, Springfield Museum of Art, and the De

Second Vice President in 1973, was President in
1974, and Juror in 1983 (Annual Exhibition) and

THE NWS TRAVELING EXHIBITION

Since 1925, the National Watercolor Society
has chosen a select group of paintings to travel
the US as ambassadors of the NWS and the
fine artists within its membership. Reaching
fine art venues across the country the NWS
Traveling Exhibition exposes the NWS and its
members to thousands of additional patrons
and serves to inspire artists who might never
have the chance to see the actual works. Over
the years, the Traveling Exhibition has included
works by such American masters as Edward
Hopper and Andrew Wyeth, and contemporary
masters too numerous to name here.
Approximately 30 paintings from the
International Exhibition are juried into the
Traveling Exhibition and spend the next year
being displayed in venues representing
some of the finest galleries, art centers
and museums across the United States.
Recent venues have included:
West Valley Art Museum, Peoria, AZ
Fallbrook Arts Center, Fallbrook, CA
LeMars Arts Center, Le Mars, IA
The Next Picture Show, Dixon, IL

NATIONAL WATERCOLOR SOCIETY

Past, Present, and Future
38

With an exciting vision and a new appreciation

for an old art form, the California Water Color
Society was founded in 1920. As the country
grew, painters found inspiration in the expansive
western lands and were, in their way, pioneers of
a new spirit.
The name of the society has changed twice
since that time: first in 1967, to California National
Watercolor Society; then in 1975, when the
members voted to become simply the National
Watercolor Society. The first exhibition was held
at the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science
and Art, which later became the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art. The first twenty-five
annual exhibitions were held there. From 1946
through the early 1960s, exhibitions were often
at the Pasadena Art Museum but also in Santa
Barbara, San Diego, and the San Francisco area.
From the late 1960s through the 1970s, Laguna
Beach Museum of Art was most often the host
gallery, in addition to the Otis Art Institute and the
Palm Springs Desert Museum. Throughout the
1980s until 2010, the annual shows were held at
the Brea Civic Cultural Center, the Muckenthaler
Cultural Center in Fullerton and the Riverside Art
Museum.
Throughout the 1950s, a biennial drawing and
print show was also presented. Most years there
was a show only for Signature Members. In 1956,
the Exhibit of California and Canadian Watercolours was held in both countries. In 1960, Mexico
City hosted La Sociedad de Acuarelistes de
California. The past presidents were honored
in 1976 and 1987 with shows at the Brand
Library Art Center. To broaden the collections of
watercolors accessible to the public, the Society
donated twenty-five paintings spanning the early
years (19251954) to the Los Angeles County
Museum of Art. The selections from 1955 to
1980 were on loan to the Laguna Beach
Museum of Art until 1989.
Although NWS is obviously an exhibiting
society, it is also an educating society. The
images of its annual exhibitions are available for
purchase on digital media as well as full color
catalogs. Its Traveling Exhibitions have visited
collegiate and public galleries and museums
throughout the United States and Canada.
Special written materials are often prepared
for these institutions. In conjunction with the
annual exhibitions, lectures and orientation
programs are made available to docents of the

host museums. As an additional service to the

public, an Associates membership category
was implemented. People who are interested
in watercolor, or art in general, may become
Associates and attend openings, shows, and
Society events. They receive all the NWS
publications and may submit work for the juried
shows for the same fees as Signature Members.
This membership provides an opportunity
for involved patronage by those who wish to
appreciate, encourage, and support the efforts of
the Society.
The Society also exhibited watercolors
from its permanent collection featuring awardwinning works from the 1955 to 1985 Annual
Exhibitions. This show was held in January 1993
at the County of Los Angeles Century Gallery in
Sylmar, California.
In 1995, all available NWS archival material
including slides of our shows, catalogs and
records were sorted, classified and delivered on
August 30, 1995 to the Smithsonian Institution
Branch Office located in the Huntington Library,
San Marino, California. This material has now
been accepted under a Deed of Gift and
has become an official part of the Smithsonian
Archives of American Art. When processed, this
material will be accessible to everyone through
the information highway.
In 1999, the National Watercolor Society
purchased a building at 915 South Pacific Avenue,
San Pedro, California, 90731. This has become
the Societys center for offices, gallery, workshops
and a place to house our growing permanent
collection. Since 2009, the NWS All-Member
Exhibitions and the International Exhibitions have
been held in this newly renovated gallery.
In recent years, NWS has continued to grow as
a global organization with members throughout
the world. In 2013/2014, NWS joined with the
International Society of Experimental Artists (ISEA)
and the Welsh Group of Wales for a small image
exhibition in venues in Florida and California, and
then on to Wales; 2014 saw an exchange with Eau
en Coulours Biennale Internationale dAquarelle
in Belgium, with the paintings traveling to the NWS
Gallery in 2015. This year NWS is collaborating
with the Shenzhen International Biennial for a
small image exchange exhibition to be shown in
Shenzhen, China, in late 2015, which then travels
in 2016 to the NWS Gallery in San Pedro, CA.
