LetusfirstanalysethetitlesAlIkhlaasandAtTauhid.Themeaningofthetitlesindicatesthat
thissurahhassomethingtodowithsincerity,purity,oneness,unity,loveorloyalty.Ikhlaas
signifiespurity,sincerityandfidelityandTauhidsignifiesunity,oneness,alignment,
synchronizationandunison.Ialwayswondered,howdotheseheadingscorelatetothissurah
and"God"?
IalwayswonderedwhythissurahistitledasAtTauhidandAlIkhlaaswhenthereisno
mentionofunity,sincerity,pureness,onenessorloyaltyintheentiresurah,yetthesurah
carriesthesetitles.Astimepassedby,Irealizedthatthereisavalidreasonwhythissurahis
titledasAlIkhlaasorAtTauhid.ThesubjectofthissmallbutvitalsurahisAllah,sowhythese
twotitles?AlIkhlaasorAtTauhid?Does"Allah"mean"God"?Allthesedangerousbutvalid
questionsbegantopopupinmymind.
AfterstudyingthoroughlyIrealizedthatwithoutsincerity,purity,unity,loyaltyandoneness
Allahisjustadefunctword,havingabsolutelynosignificanceinourlives,exceptthatof
blindworshiping.Icannotcomprehendhowthisallimportantword"Allah"hasnoliteralworth
exceptthe"Utopian"beliefof"God".Blindlyserving"God"withoutunderstandingHimis
tantamounttoidolworship,eventhoughifthereisnophysicalpresenceofHim.
Tounderstandthemessageof"Quran"itisveryimportanttounderstandwhyAllahisso
significantandwhyobediencetoHimisthemainsubjectofthe"Quran"?Togainmaximum
supportfromAllahinourlives,firstweneedtounderstandwhatAllahis,andwhyitisimportant
toserveHimonly?WhyservingotherthanAllahisgreatestsin?Traditionalscholarsinsist
thatwecannotunderstandAllahandweshouldnevermakeanattempttounderstandHim.The
allimportantwordALLAHisneglectedandignoredbecausethe"authorities"havesaidso.How
canweunderstand"Quran"withoutunderstandingAllah?Thiswasmybiggestdilemma.
Nowcomingbacktothetitleofthesurah,thetitleIkhlaas/Tauhidisconnectedorlinkedwiththe
subjectAllah.TohaveAllahinourliveswemustbesincere,pure,workasaunitwithcomplete
loyalty.TauhidmeanswehavetobeonewiththeSystem(Allah).Ifwearenotinalignment
withanysystemwewon'tbeabletoachievethedesiredresults.Toattainonenesswiththe
systemitisimportanttobeabsorbed/gelwiththeworkorthesystemtogetexcellentresults.
Theauthor'ssincereintentionistoinstilltheimportanceofAllahinourdailylives.Allahisnota
justadeityoragodtobeworshipedblindlyortobepleased,asthoughHehasemotionsof

besincere,loyal,pureandbeonewiththesystem,weareconnectedwith.Asystemhasmany
partsorpieceswhichbecomesacompleteunit.Allahisaunitandcanbepreciselyunderstood
accordingtothecontext.
WhoisAllah?
WhentheQuranmentionshandsoreyesofAllah,itdoesnotdiscussaboutAllahspersonality
orwhenQuranmentionsaboutloantoAllahitdoesnotmeanthatAllahneedsloan.Andwhen
QurandirectsustoworshipAllahitdoesnotmeanthatAllahneedsourrituals.WhenQuran
saysyourilahisoneitdoesnotmeanAllah(2:163).WemusttrytounderstandwhatAllahis
andwhyassociatinganyonewithAllahisthegreatestsin.Isthegodjealousofothers?Quran
isassociatingAllahwithRasul,then"isn'tthatasin"?WhyistheQuranemphasizingon
obeyingAllahandObeyRasuldoesthismeanAllahandRasulareonanequalplatform.First
ofallitisveryimportanttocleartheconceptofAllah,themostimportantwordoftheQuran,if
wewanttounderstandthemessageof"Quran"intruesense,beforeharpingonotherpoints.
TheactualmeaningofAllah,Rabbandilahcanonlybededucedbyunderstandingthewhole
contextclearlyandwithopenmind.
Thecorrectunderstandingofthekeywordsofthe"Quran"willchangetheentiremessageof
thepresentinterpretationofthe"Quran".BlindlyworshipingAllahisthegreatestsinandthe
mainreasonforourdownfall.QuranisverysincerelytryingtomakeusunderstandwhatAllah
is,butourbeliefinourancestralteachingsarethemainhindranceandmoreappealingtous
thantheteachingsofthehumblemessengerofthe"Quran".
ThelinguisticanalysisofthetermAllah:
IstronglybelieveAllahisnotaproperwordbutatermusetodescribeathingortoexpressa
conceptespeciallyinaparticularlanguageorsubject.Allahisa"Arabic"termusedevenbefore
theadventofIslamanditisnotamonopolyof"Islam".Bedouins,Jews,Christianand
evenArmeniansusedthistermlongbeforethe"Quran"iswritten.Itwasintheircolloquialuse.
Thistermisacompoundofthreewords,++ALstandsforTHELAAMsignifiesFOR
andHAindicatesHIM.ALmeantheinEnglish,whichmakesthewordorphrasedefinite.
LaamistranslatedasforthepersonalpronounHaisthirdpersonsingular,whichstandsfor
him.Togetherthesegmentsformaprepositionphraseknownasjrwamajrr()for
him.TheshaddahonLaamindicatessignofemphasis.ThetermAllahcanbedefineas
Nominativecase,GenitivecaseandAccusativecase.Together(Al+LA+H)isAllah.The
prepositionmayalsolinkwithotherpartsofspeechthatarenominalsinsteadofnouns.For
exampleasinglewordcanconsistofaprepositionandasuffixedpronoun,whichtogetherare
relatedinajrwamajrrdependency.AccordingtoArabicgrammarthesuffixedpronounwill
stillbeconsideredtobeinthegenitivecasemajrr().SostudyingallthisIconcludedthe
literarymeaningofAllahisFORHIMONLY.

ofthenecessaryingredientsrequiredtooperatethesystemsuchassincerity,purity,honesty,

NowthereaderswhoareobsessedwiththeideaofworshipingofoneGodwillobject,that
whenAllahisone,thenwhyhaveyoucategorizeddifferentsystemsas"Allah"?Theymay
alsoobjectwhogaveyousuchpowerstoalterthiscenturiesoldbeliefofAllahbeingoneorthe
unique?SomemayalsoaccusemeofincliningtowardsHinduismorBuddhism.ButWhatis
trueforHinduismorBuddhismoranyismshouldbetrueforallorviceversa.Thetruthshould
betruth,nomatterwhorepresentsit.Therecannotbedifferentsetsoftruthsfordifferentisms.
Justlikemathematics,2+2=4whetheritisVedicmathematics,ArabicmathorSumerian
mathof2500BCyearsago,allhavethesameconclusionbecauseitrepresentstruthandnot
mythologicalorarbitraryclaims.Thegenuinenessofthemessagecanbeevaluatedbythe

ingredientswhichhavetobeunderstoodtooperatethesystemsmoothly.Understandingthe
mechanismofthesystemisveryimportant.Ifyouwantthesystemtoworkforyou,servingthe
systemsincerelyistheonlyoption,noamountofritualsorworshipingwillassistyoutofulfill
yourintendeddesire.Thesystemservesyoubackonlyifwerelyandserveitsincerely.
TheotherreasonforselectingAllahasasystemisthatitfitsinthecontextofeveryverse,and
themeaningisconsistentthroughout.ThepurposeofanySystemistoorganize/controlandat
thesametimegivescompletefreedomandflexibilityinsuchamannerthattheconsequences
arepredictable.Butthesystembyitselfisnothingunlesswefulfillitsrequirements.Ifwedon't
satisfyitsneedsitwillbecomedefunct."Quranalsoendorsesmyviewsinthefollowingwords:
"ThereforetakecareofMe,Iwilltakecareofyou,andbethankfultoMeanddon't
