CURRICULAR STATEMENT
The pupil learns the concept of rational
numbers through experience, observation, discussion, and
hypotheses.

CONTENT ANALYSIS
New terms: Numbers, Natural Numbers, Negative
Numbers, Integers, Even Numbers, Odd Numbers, Fraction,
Rational Numbers, Numerator and Denominator.
Facts:
The numbers 1, 2, 3, etc are called natural numbers.
Numbers less than zero are called negative numbers.
Negative numbers are usually written with a negative
sign.

Natural numbers, their negatives and zero are

collectively called integers.
An even number is an integer that is divisible by two
without remainder.
The numbers 2, 4, 6, etc are called even numbers.
An odd number is an integer that is not even.
The numbers 1, 3, 5, etc are called odd numbers.
The numbers 0, 1, 2, etc are called whole numbers.
Numbers of the form

a
b

,a0 are called fractions.

Fractions have numerator and denominator.

The numerator is a and denominator is b for every
fraction

a
b

Integers and fractions are collectively called rational

numbers.
Concept: Integers and fractions are collectively called
Rational
Numbers
Process: Activities to attain the concept of rational
numbers.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
I.

II.

The pupil acquires knowledge of the concept Rational

Numbers.
a) Recalls the definition of rational numbers.

rational numbers, fractions, integers, numerator,
denominator, etc.
a) Discriminates
between
numerator
and
denominator.

III.

IV.

and rational numbers.
The
pupil
applies
his/her
knowledge
and
understanding of rational numbers to new problems.
a) Analyses and finds out what is given and what is
required.
b)Establishes relationship among the data.

PRESENTATION

a

, a0 are

called fractions.

Teacher presents a story before the

students to establish the concept of
rational numbers.
Do you read books?
Have you read Alice in wonderland?
Did you like that story?
Do you want to hear a story?
Long long distance away, there is a
wonder world of Maths. The name of Pupils carefully
that world is NUMBER LAND. Different listens the story.

type of numbers and Math operators

lived there. Numbers were like human
beings; they can speak, hear, walk,
dance, and anything they like.
Fortunately or unfortunately, the
numbers have to attend school in
Number land. In the NUMBER
SCHOOL, the classes were arranged
according to their types. The divisions
were named Natural numbers, Odd
numbers, Even numbers, Negative
numbers,
etc.
The
seating
arrangement
in
classes
was
according to ascending order of their
names. That is, in the natural
numbers class, number 1 will sit first,
2 second, 3 third, etc.
One day, some new students
joined the school. Their name was
1/2, 3/2, and 4/3. As they were new,
they were confused about their seats.
Teacher asked them to sit according
to ascending order. Teacher seated
between 0and 1 3/2 and 4/3 between
1and 2 and the teacher asked them
to introduce themselves before the
class stood up and said, we are
coming from the same family. We
belong to the family of fractions. We
are formed by dividing integers by
non- zero integers. All of us can be
written in the form of a/b, b0. The

top number a is called numerator

and
bottom
number
is called
denominator. That is all about us.
Thank you.
Hearing all these, number 1
stood up and asked the teacher, We
are all from the family of natural
numbers. Then why do you made
these strangers sit with us? Teacher
replied to them; You are all Natural
numbers and they are fractions, I
know. But, integers and fractions are
collectively
known
as
rational
numbers. So you belong to the same
family. Numbers calmed down and
everybody
shakes
hands
with
fractions and welcomed them to their
class. They renamed their class as,
Rational Numbers.
1/6
After the first period the Numerator=1
students went out to play in the Denominator=6
ground.
They
played
a
game
together. The game was between
natural numbers and fractions. They
should guess their names each other.
They have to say the denominator
and numerator also.
Teacher shows the first one.
Who is this student? What are the
numerator and denominator?
1/2
Numerator=1
Denominator=2

The next was this one. Who is this?

2
What
are
the
numerator
and Pupils keeps silent
denominator?

What about this?

Teacher explains the answer.

2 can be written as

2 4 6 8
, , ,
1 2 3 4

, etc.

So, we can take 2 as

2
1

. Therefore,

IDENTIFY THE FOLLOWING

RATIONAL NUMBERS AND FIND
THE NUMERATOR AND
DENOMINATOR.

the numerator is 2 and denominator

is 1.
Activity-1
Teacher gives an activity card to the
students.

Teacher checks the answers and

explain.

RATIONAL NUMBERS
Numbers

that

can

written in the form

where x and y are integers

are called rational numbers.
Rational numbers include
both fractions and integers.
Activity 2
So, how can we write rational
numbers in general?
Teacher exhibits a chart showing the
definition of rational numbers.

Teacher asks students to read it and

copy it to the notebook.
