Haddonfield takes down Lower Cape May, 3-0

The Haddonfield
Citizens Group forms
to oppose possible RCA
facility at Bancroft site
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Recovery Centers of America,
a for-profit corporation providing
drug and alcohol rehabilitation
owned by J. Brian ONeill, has
been working to acquire the Bancroft property to be used for one
of its treatment facilities.
In response, a number of concerned Haddonfield residents
have formed a non-profit corporation called the Haddonfield Citizens Group to oppose the proposed facility, due to it being so
close to two of the boroughs public schools. The group was created not only in opposition, but to
also keep the public informed as
well as to show support of the
borough acquiring the property.

Eagle Scout goes down in history

Ross Graham helps improve Historical Society of Haddonfield
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Haddonfield Troop 65s Ross
Graham had been a Boy Scout for
11 years. Though he recently
aged out when he turned 18, he
was honored for earning his
Eagle Scout ranking.
In early October, Graham was
awarded his Eagle Scout during
Troop 65s Fall Court of Honor.
He received his Eagle Scout ranking for improving the Historical
Society of Haddonfields herb
garden, as well as other areas
around the building.
I feel pretty proud to be an
Eagle Scout. Joining the ranks of
my brother and uncle, it is nice to
be a part of that club. It felt great
to accomplish something, Graham said.
Graham started Scouting in
first grade, inspired by his older

Most people think we learn
outdoors things, but you also
learn skills about life. I really
liked giving back to the community, too. Those are some of the
things I really like about Scouting, Graham said.
From the beginning, Scouts are
pushed to work toward their different ranks within Scouting, including Eagle Scout. However, as
they get older, the boys learn to
take the initiative of getting their
badges and pushing themselves
to do better.
When it came time for Graham
to work on his Eagle Scout project, he reached out to the Historical Society and asked if there was

The Chris Christie effect

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Even though he wasnt on ballot, the governor had an effect on election outcomes
hris Christie was not on the
General Election ballot last
Tuesday, but the effect he had
on the outcome of elections in New
Jersey was profound.
At least three state Assembly seats
switched hands from the Republicans
to the Democrats last week, with a
fourth pending official results. If all
four seats switch to the Democrats, it
will reduce the GOPs number of seats
to 28 out of 80, its lowest total in more
than 30 years.
Democrats Joann Downey and Eric
Houghtaling defeated their Republican
incumbent opponents Mary Pat Angelini and Caroline Casagrande in the
states 11th District in Monmouth
County, a district where Republicans
held both seats since 1992.
In the 1st District in South Jersey,
Republican Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi lost his seat. Democrats Bob Andrzejczak and his running mate Bruce

Your thoughts

of last weeks General Election and the
potential message it sends to Gov.
Christie? Share your thoughts on this,
and other topics, in a letter to the editor.

Land defeated Fiocchi and his running

mate Jim Sauro.
Voter turnout is expected to be low
official results havent been released
yet because of the lack of a prime
position to vote for, such as governor
or president. But those who did show
up to the polls sent a pretty clear message that they are unhappy with the
way things are going in the Assembly.
Many political pundits believe this
message was aimed directly at Christie
and the Republican Party, and its hard
to counter that argument.
Four years ago, Christie was riding
high as a potential Republican candidate against President Obama. Feel-

ings were good about Christie in New

Jersey and, as a result, about the Republican Party in general.
Today, after controversies such as
the George Washington Bridge debacle
and fight against pensions, the tides
have changed quite substantially.
While hes in the large GOP field
looking for the 2016 nomination,
Christies bubble has seemed to burst.
While the dust has not settled yet, his
onetime status as a rising star seems to
have faded, and his party is paying for
his blunders back home.
Last week, voters spoke out against
Christie and his party. In the next few
months, his party members will have a
chance to speak out against him again
in the Republican Primary, if he remains on the ballot, that is.
And then, assuming he doesnt come
out victorious, he will ride off into the
sunset as the Garden State will select a
new governor come 2017.

Working at Mable Kay Senior
Center has been an honor
To the seniors who attended the functions at the Mable Kay Senior Center, this
is to let you know from the bottom of my
heart that it has been my pleasure and an
honor to serve you over the past decade or
so.
It is with deep sorrow that I will no
longer be calling bingo and sharing the fun
and laughter we have known. I will miss
the Christmas parties, the 50/50 lunches
and the picnics we have shared and, as for
our Friday luncheons, I will miss serving
you coffee and lunch, chatting with you
and simply enjoying your company. I have
been doing this because I have a special

place in my heart for the senior population

that began when I was 16 years old as a
candy striper at Saint Mary's Home, then
as an adult I became the caregiver of both
of my parents until the day they passed.
I suppose we all have a calling, and I believe my calling was to bring as much joy
as I could to brighten up your days. I hope
that my presence at Mabel Kay did just
that, the same way that being with you
brightened up my days.
Volunteering at Mabel Kay was the one
thing I always looked forward to. I appreciate all the love I have received and know
that I love and will miss you all and you
will remain in my heart and prayers forever.
May God bless all of you!

Residents vote Kutner, Sangillo, Drew

to Haddonfield Board of Education
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Borough residents went to the
polls on Tuesday, Nov. 3 to cast
their votes in the 2015 election. A
total of 3,931 votes were cast for
the Haddonfield Board of Education seats, as well as other elections.
The results for the three contested Board of Education seats
will see incumbent Susan Kutner
return to the board with newcomers Adam M. Sangillo and Joshua
Drew.
Drew, Kutner, Sangillo, Joseph
Evangelisti and Glenn R. George
were the five candidates running
for the three open seats on the
board.
Kutner originally joined the
board in 2015 to fill the unexpired
term of Andrew Berlin. Kutner,
having a background as a school
architect specializing in educational facility planning, fit the
bill. Berlins seat however, was
still open for the 2015 election.
Maureen Eyles, joining the board
in 2012, and Dennis Kelleher, joining in 2008, were the two current

board members who did not run

for re-election, creating the three
open seats.
Unofficial election results saw
Kutner receive 24.8 percent of the
votes, Sangillo receive 23.6 percent and Drew receive 19.7 percent. Evangelisti and George
werent too far behind with about
15 percent of the votes each.
Each winning candidate felt it
was an honor to be chosen for the
board.
We had a lot of great candidates, each running a hard campaign. It wasnt so much about
beating anyone as it was about
getting great people on the board.
I felt they all had great ideas, credentials, energy and dedication; it
would make me feel great whoever won. It was an honor to be considered with that group, Sangillo
said.
Thanks to all who participated in the election, as voters or
candidates, Drew said.
Kutner would like to see the upcoming bond referendum pass
with significant public support.
Drew would like to address the
failing infrastructure as well and

also put into place measures to

avoid a similar situation in the future. Sangillo expressed the same
things as Drew and also said he
would like to continue to build a
bridge of communication between the public and the board.
The BOE is currently working
hard to address the communitys
concerns both in terms of this
referendum and long-term facilities strategies, Kutner said.
In the race for the 6th Legislative District of the General Assembly, incumbents Louis D.
Greenwald (D) and Pamela R.
Lampit (D) won re-election. The
pair defeated challengers Holly
Tate (R), Claire H. Gustafson (R)
and Green Party members James
Bracciante and Amanda Davis.
Greenwald and Lampit received
about 63 percent of the votes together.
In the race for sheriff, Gilbert
L. Whip Wilson (D) won with
about 62 percent of the votes
against Lou Hannon (R). In the
race for surrogate, Michelle Gentek-Mayer (D) won with about 63

going on, there is nothing that
you can do. There is so much
going on, and people arent aware
of the circumstances. We want to
support our commissioners as
they get a hold of the property
and have it benefit the community, said Lindsay Vest, one of the
leaders of Haddonfield Citizens
Group.
The group was formed in the
summer in response to a public
meeting at which ONeil spoke
about RCAs plans to acquire the
Brancroft site and make it into a
drug rehabilitation facility. The
meeting garnered a lot of concerned citizens voicing their
opinion about having a drug
rehab center so close to two of the
districts schools, Haddonfield
Memorial High School and Tatem
Elementary School.
After the meeting, some of
those citizens came together to

form the group to make sure their

voices are heard and educate the
public about the situation. The
group does not want a drug rehabilitation facility so close to the
schools and wants to show support for commissioners to acquire the Bancroft property for
the borough.
We want them to realize the
citizens support getting this property, and having a drug treatment
facility next to schools is not OK,
Vest said.
Vest wanted to be sure that people know the group is not against
drug rehabilitation. However, it
doesnt believe it is appropriate to
have a site so close to schools.
As a group, we are not against
drug rehabilitation. We understand it is an epidemic. However,
what we feel is an opportune
place is not next to a high school
and so close to an elementary
school, Vest said.

OBITUARIES
Continued from page 2

Charles E. Hurd
Nov. 3, 2015
Charles E. Chuck Hurd of
Haddonfield passed away on Nov.
3 at the age of 93. He was the
beloved husband of Blythe Bunnie (nee Hartley); loving father
of Randall Hurd (Patricia) of
Mankato, Minn., Peter Hurd
(Lisa) of Haddonfield, Robin
Rheiner (Jack) of Wycombe, Pa.;
and dear grandfather of Kirby,
Erin, Sam, Doug, Rita, Lindsay,
Tim, Emily and Paul. He is also
survived by a sister Marylena
Schrock of Arlington, Va., and
many nieces, nephews and
friends.
Chuck was a longtime New Jersey resident with deep Pennsylvania roots. He grew up in Somerset
County and attended Penn State,
where his performing talent first
emerged as a member of the Penn
State Glee Club. He met Bunnie
at State College, graduated in
1947, and they married in 1948.
His first job out of college was
with U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh, and
in 1951, they moved to Oaklyn,
where Chuck began his long career with RCA. They moved to
Haddonfield in 1953.
He was always a rabid and
loyal fan of both Nittany Lions
football and the Philadelphia
Phillies, and he attended many
games at Connie Mack and then
Veterans Stadium over the years.
He was an avid reader, always
non-fiction, and especially military history.

Chuck and Bunnie shared a

love of learning and travel. They
visited many elder hostels
throughout the United States, enjoyed two trips to Europe and a
three-week excursion to New
Zealand in 1988.
Chuck was a 50-plus-year member of both the Haddonfield Ys
Mens Club and the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield,
where he and Bunnie were loyal
choir members. He also served
terms as both a trustee and deacon.
He was a devoted, hands-on father whose primary goal was to
send his three kids to college and
he was proud of having done that.
He was also a proud grandfather,
who took an interest in all of his
nine grandchildren. Annual August vacations in Avalon were always a big hit, and an opportunity for Chuck to spend quality
time with the entire family.
Outside of his devotion to family, perhaps Chucks greatest gift
was as an accomplished amateur
actor, where he got to flex his formidable sense of humor. He appeared in many productions of
both the Musicrafters and Plays
& Players, including an awardwinning turn as Oscar Madison
in The Odd Couple at the Haddon Fortnightly in 1970. At the
time of his death, Chuck was in
rehearsals for a role in a radio
theater production, to be presented at the Evergreens on Dec. 21.
In 2009, Chuck and Bunnie
moved to the Evergreens, where
they have many friends and he
was actively involved in resident
life.

group, Chief Clinical Officer
Deni Carise said everyone is entitled to voice their own opinion,
and she supports any time that
people come together for a cause.
However, she wishes it was
against the drug epidemic.
According to Carise, heroin-related deaths have tripled nationally, and heroin-related deaths in
New Jersey are three times the
national average.
I hope people really do know
that people in Haddonfield are affected by this and there is a real
need for treatment, and this is an
ideal site for it I hope they look
at us as part of the solution, not
part of the problem, Carise said.
If RCA were to acquire the
Bancroft property, Carise said it
would absolutely work with the
community, letting them know
they are safe and show them what
it plans to do. To support this,
Carise mentioned the meeting in
Haddonfield from the spring as
well as having open communication with residents in Massachusetts, where it has a facility already.
We talked about what we will
do, assured them that patients,
neighbors and staff were safe,
Carise said. I think we see all of
the bad things that people do
when addicted or abusing drugs,
but for those of us who go on and

to get done. Grahams brother
previously helped the organization, so he thought it would be a
good idea to reach out to it again.
The HSH told him renovations
and refurbishing of the herb garden was needed, so Graham took
the reins of the project.
He started by first getting approval from the Garden Club, as
the herb garden was made in
honor of a past member. Once he
got its approval, he worked to
fundraise for the project. Graham
ended up raising enough money
for the project and then some,
leaving enough remaining for the
HSH to maintain the garden.
We raised more money than

needed. After the project, we had

money to give the society to help
maintain it for awhile, Graham
said.
Graham, along with many
helpers, then removed old plants
and weeds, put in new, more historically accurate ones and put in
barriers so the roots wouldnt
spread and take over the garden.
He also helped to trim bushes
around the area and replace the
gravel path and put in a weed barrier.
Graham really liked taking the
leadership role. He worked to get
everything into place and organized what needed to be done.
After the project was finished,
Graham said he felt frustrated,
that it wasnt good enough. He believes he originally felt that way
because he is a perfectionist.
However, after a bit, he realized
what he did was a lot of work and

felt proud of his accomplishment.

For his hard work, Graham
earned the rank of Eagle Scout,
being one of the first of his grade
level to earn the honor. He said although he is the face of the project and the badge, he couldnt
have done it alone.
I couldnt have done it without my parents, leaders, troops
and friends who came to help and
support me. Eagle Scout takes a
lot of support; you need a team
with you, not just by yourself. It is
a team effort. Eagle Scout is the
face, but there is a whole team behind it. Everyone worked really
hard on it, Graham said.
For now, Graham is done with
Scouting. However, in the future,
he said if he has children, he
would love to teach his children
the things he learned from Scouting.

we still owe $16 million in principal and $2 million to $4 million

dollars in interest on that borrowed money to be paid until
2025. In doing so, residents trusted that their tax dollars would be
spent wisely and competently.
Unfortunately that trust has
not been met with good results.
For years, students and parents
have complained of leaks in ceilings, trash cans collecting rainwater, cracking mortar, and other
signs of disrepair. This past summer, the district was forced to seal
off and make emergency repairs
to walls that were in danger of

collapse at two schools. Some of

the disrepair is now outlined in
the report of school districts architect, Becica Associates, entitled Preliminary Building Envelope Condition Assessment available on the Hadonfield Public
Schools website, also posted on
the Haddonfield United Facebook
page. I urge all residents to read
this report.
To cite just a few examples
from the Becica report: roof shingles are falling because steel nails
are corroding and copper fasteners should have been used; the
rooftop HVAC units do not properly consider waterproofing of
duct penetrations and proximity
to rising wall flashings; and steel
lintels were originally installed
without corrosion protective coat-

ings, and coupled with lack of

through wall flashings, have
caused corrosion, and so on for
100 pages.
Obviously none of us can
change the past; we can only
learn from it and chart a better
course for the future. I agree with
other Haddonfield residents who
have advocated the creation of a
citizens' advisory committee comprised of experts in building
maintenance and repair. I also
agree that the school board must
propose a smaller referendum upfront, focused on projects that directly impinge upon student and
staff safety. In the future, residents can approve further bonding for other projects once they
see positive results.

RCA and the Haddonfield Citizen Group have not been in direct
contact with each other.
The group came to the special
Planning Board meeting held on
Oct. 29 in regard to the Bancroft
property being named a redevelopment area. Borough commissioners asked for a reinvestigation of the property to determine
if it is a redevelopment area, as a
reassertion of the 2005 ruling,

and to create redevelopment

plans for the site.
The group went to the meeting
to show its support for the commissioners, as well as to educate
the public beforehand about the
group. Also, during the public
comment portion, attorney Jeffrey Baron of the Voorhees firm
Baron and Brennan, on retainer
for the Haddonfield Citizens
Group, testified in favor of the
Bancroft property being named a
redevelopment area.
A decision was postponed due
to the attorney representing RCA
asking for more time. The next
special Planning Board meeting
for the determination of the Bancroft property as a redevelopment

area is scheduled for Dec. 9 at 7:30

in Borough Hall. Vest encourages
everyone to attend the meetings
to show support and be informed.
