Memory Enhancement
The video regarding memory enhancement states, short-term memory is not able to store
information permanently. During sleep, the brain reactivates the information it has received
during the day. Information is transferred to long-term memory where it unites with other longterm memories (Films Media Group, 2012). Within this paper the rehabilitative services that are
present in many prisons today, recognizing that many inmates have had difficulty obtaining and
maintaining employment due to low educational achievement levels are just a few things that
will be discussed. Additionally, the following will be discussed as well: research information
regarding the relationship between sleep and memory storage, an explanation of the loci method
and a detailed description on how the loci Method may be applied in the adult basic education
venue.
Relationship between Sleep and Memory
According to Films Media Group, (2012), there is a direct link between long term memory
storage and deep sleep. A study was conducted with students demonstrating the correlation
between increased stimulation during deep sleep cycles and the ability to memorize a list of
random words before falling asleep. The students were asked to recite the list after the sleep and
nearly all students memorized the list perfectly (Films Media Group, 2012). The psychologist
mentions children having a better long-term memory storage because they tend to have healthier
deep sleep abilities. Inversely, it has been determined that as we age, specifically over the age of

forty, our deep sleep cycles diminish and our long-term memory storage also decreases (Films
Media Group, 2012).
To assist inmates by increasing the skills needed for gainful employment post imprisonment, the
guards and educators could work together to ensure a good nights rest. For example, the inmates
could have a study time prior to bed. If the guards worked with the maintenance of a prison, it
could be ensured the prisoners are given a quiet and dark sleep environment. Additionally, the
educators could advocate for appropriate sleep attire, decent mattresses, and blankets. If a deep
sleep cycle can help a prisoner change an illiterate and innumerate statues, the educators could
work to help them improve the sleeping arrangements.
