Instructions:
This Assessment Project has been designed to assess the criteria associated with the
competency BSBWHS401A Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and
programs to meet legislative requirement. To achieve competency in this unit, a person
must be able to demonstrate:

applying organisational management systems and procedures to WHS within


workgroup area
applying procedures for assessing and controlling risks to health and safety
associated with those hazards, in accordance with the hierarchy of controls
providing specific, clear and accurate information and advice on workplace
hazards to workgroup
knowledge of legal responsibilities of employers, supervisors and employees in
the workplace.

This competency is part of the award BSB40207 Certificate IV in Business.

Case Study
You have recently been elected as the Health and Safety officer in the Macquarie Institute.
You have a new team of employees commencing work who will participate in an initial WHS
training session. You are requested to prepare this training session providing information
on a range of topics

Task 1

What information would you present on the following topics and how:

WHS Legislation

Codes of Practice

National Industry Standards

WHS policies, procedures and programs

Task 2

What costs, both tangible and intangible would be involved in running these kinds of
training courses? What would be the tangible and intangible benefits?

Task 3

Identify who you would need to consult with in your work place to effectively identify the
training needs of the various different roles. Choose one of these roles and describe what
WHS skills, training and equipment they would need in order to complete their job safely.
Describe how you would determine that someone in this role lacked these skills or
equipments and how you would remedy this.

Task 4

(10 marks)

WHS requires an ongoing commitment by all stakeholders in a workplace. Rules and


regulations as well as work place procedures can change rapidly. How do you ensure that
the information you provide to your staff members in training sessions and on a daily basis
is correct, up to date and readily accessible?

WHS Legislation: the guide to the Work Health and Safety Act provides an
overview of the legislation, or you can delve into the WHS Act and the codes
of practice to understand your health and safety duties and rights at work.

Code of Practice provide advice on how to meet regulatory requirements.


Codes are not legally enforceable but they can be used in courts as evidence
that legal requirements have or have not been met.

National Industry Standards: standards are published document that


establish specifications and procedures designed to maximise the reliability of
products, materials and services people use every day. Standards make
products work better, make them compatible and able to interact with other
products, and safeguard consumer safety.

WHS Policies, Procedures and Programs:


Providing everyone in its workplaces with a safe and healthy working and
learning environment.
Adopting a preventative and strategic approach to health and safety and using
measurable objective and targets to monitor performance.
Supporting and promoting health and wellbeing.
Providing appropriate information, training and instruction to facilitate safe
and productive work and learning environment.
Providing an effective and accessible safety management system for all
employees and other to guide safe working and learning in all workplaces.

TASK 3
We discuss with the manager or colleagues. The roles we use for the training by doing
role play about WHS and the equipment we need such as handbook about WHS, first
aid kit, safety equipment and professional trainer.
If there is someone lacked in training, we give them extra training so they can
understand soon as possible.

TASK 4
By doing daily training session to all employee to make sure they always update about
the WHS.
Usually we search in internet or doing survey about what is new in WHS so we always
get the newest issue and can provide what we need to keep it up to date .
