he most heartening feature
of the landslide electoral vic

for Democracy (NLD) in Myanmar
is the maturity and statesmanlike
quality being displayed by its
chairperson, Aung San Suu Kyi,
who is now showing all potentiali

south and southeast Asia.
At a time when wild jubilation is
taking place all over Myanmar
and accolades are being heaped
on the Nobel laureate, the lady, as
she is called in the length and
breadth of Myanmar, has played
her cards adroitly, knowing fully
well that in spite of the massive
numerical superiority in parlia

Myanmar army's constitutional
status.
That is the reason behind her
overture to President Thein Sein
and Senior General Min Aung
Hlaing, the all powerful command
erinchief of the army, for recon
ciliation talks. Both of them have
accepted the offer. But, even if the

the constitution.
However, the strategic position
being enjoyed by the commander
inchief is certain to emerge as the
biggest stumbling block before
Suu Kyi.
The army chief appoints and
controls the ministers of defence,
home and border af fairs.
T herefore Su Ky i or anybody
appointed by her as president will
have no power over the country's
security order. Moreover the gen
eral has the right to approve pres
idential or vicepresidential candi
dates. He can veto any proposal to
amend the constitution and take
back power from any government
at any time if he wishes. In a word,
the army chief, and not any elect
ed government, is the ultimate
authority in Myanmar.
Suu Kyi's real test will be finding
a solution to the long standing
armed ethnic conflicts. By voting
for the NLD en masse the ethnic
minorities, consisting of about 40
percent of Myanmar's total popu
lation, have entrusted Suu Kyi
with a responsibility she may find
it difficult to live up to.

French warplanes
launch fresh strikes
Paris: French warplanes carried out a new
round of airstrikes on Islamic State (IS)
targets in Syria's Raqqa region this week,
defense officials said.
According to the French defense min
istry, there were seven airstrikes and at
least three major explosions, CNN report

ducted a series of airstrikes in Raqqa on
Sunday and Monday.
The strikes destroyed a command cen
ter and training center. France has been
conducting airstrikes against IS targets in
Syria since September as part of a USled

Sonam Kapoor as his betrothed,

Is terrorism a threat to
suburban communities?
or many living in suburban
and rural communities, the
threat of terror may seem
very remote and limited to major
metropolises. But is this compla
cency warranted?
It is common for people to
hear the word terrorism and
immediate ly think of Islamic
extremists operating abroad. But
terrorism comes in many forms,
each with its own characteristics,
says Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, a
fellow at the American Society of
Criminology and author of the
new book, Global Terrorism and
its Ef fects on Humanity, which
addresses the causes, agendas and
methods used by terrorists and
offers a prescription for eradicat
ing this worldwide threat.
Unfortunately, no community is
truly safe from terror threats, he
points out.
From eco terrorism to patholog
ical terrorism, the definitions,
causes and manifestations of ter
ror are varied. And modern tech
nologies are creating the possibili
