EDUC 2220- Educational Technology Lesson Plan

EMIGRATION AND IMMIGRATION
TARGET GROUP IS GRADES 7-12

Common Core Standards:

Lesson Summary:
This lesson will teach children about emigration and immigration, and the difficulties that they had in the mid19 century. The subject is the push and pull effect of emigration, and the difference between immigration and
emigration. We will be creating a poster on the push and pull effect. They will complete handout that I will
provide. Children will also be required to watch a couple of Youtube videos on the subject. Children will have
a vocabulary list and a cause and effect handout that will assist them in making of poster.
Estimated Duration:
The time duration will take at least 4 class periods to complete with test. The class periods are 45 minutes
long.
This lesson plan will give the children 180 minutes for this topic. Which should be enough time for the
children to complete this lesson.
Commentary:
I will start the lesson out by introducing the picture on the poster named urgent warning for emigrating
girl. I then will introduce the definitions and have them do homework for what they did not finish in class.
The challenge that I will overcome is to keep the children intrigued in the lesson.it will be a challenge, but I
will hook them by providing them with a poster board to create their own poster about emigration. I will
make this the second homework assignment.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1: First 20 minutes will introduce emigration and immigration. Then I will introduce the poster (Urgent
warning for emigration girls) and teach them what it means (10 mins). I will give them the vocabulary list to
work on in class, and whatever they do not finish it will be homework (handouts). The list of words is about 30
words and phrases and the children will not have enough time for them to finish in class.

Day 2: We will start day 2 off by getting tablets out and watching video on emigration in the 19th century:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38GMsfT-YvY this video is 10 minutes long and students will be
instructed to take notes. In class discussion on the poster urgent warning for emigrating girls questions like

taking notes for next class. HOMEWORK WILL BE HANDOUTS GOOD AND BAD JOBS FOR
IMMIGRANTSFROM GERMANY(http://maxkade.iupui.edu/unit19/apen19-c.html

DAY 3:
The class will break up into groups of 2-3students to do class activates (handout that will help them complete
the poster) http://maxkade.iupui.edu/unit19/apen19b1.html which will be 30 percent of grade.
They will create their own poster on tablet using Word and snap-shot applications. This will take most of class
And they will be required to create a blog for me to review.
DAY 4:
REVIEW AND TEST
Review all material (15 minutes) and do test.

Pre-Assessment
I will ask question on the subject and then give instructions on the lesson. Peer discussion will be key on
this subject. This will let me know who knows what.
Scoring Guidelines:
20%: class participation
20%: homework

30%: poster
30%: test
The test and the Poster are the two major projects for this lesson plan. They hold the most
weight, but without the class participation and homework the assignment is challenging.

Post-Assessment:
I will give the students a test on what is emigration and the difference between emigration and
immigration. The test will also include some vocabulary words and what they learned doing the poster.
The blog will also be a plus if they give there onion on who they like using it.
Scoring Guidelines:
100-90 : A
89-80 : B
79-70 : C
69-60 : D
59- BELOW : F

Differentiated Instructional Support

I will pair the child with someone that is more escalated in learning for them to get the help they need
with the poster. I will also touch base with the parent for help with the vocabulary homework. I will also
give them more time with test if needed.

from this site as well.

Homework Options and Home Connections

The vocabulary and Good and Bad jobs in Germany" will be the homework. It will be graded, and
they will be able to use this to do poster. It will also help them prepare for their test. By watching the
videos that I provided it will help them fill in the handouts.

Interdisciplinary Connections
My student will be not only doing social studies, they will also be doing history and geography. The
history is the knowing of the people and places. The geography is the land and what accorded in the
time place and time. We have a handout for this asking the children about good and bad jobs in the
1900s to complete.

For teachers
I used YouTube for my class to learn from. I search for the videos that will help
my children with the homework and in class activates. I used the blog from google
also. The kids have tablets or IPads, so I thought that I will have them create their
folders and post them to a blog so that I can review, and grade them.

For students
IPads or tablets
Google accounts
Handouts that will help them create the poster for assignment
Word document
Snap-shot or snip-it

Key Vocabulary

These vocabulary word definitions can be found on the videos that I provided and in dictionary on their IPads.
Additional Notes:
Putting this lesson plan together was not that easy, but the children will learn from it. I will make sure
that I grade the definitions so that I will know who needs help.
