Biogas production
The conversion of organic matter into biogas is carried out by a consortium
of microorganisms through a series of metabolic stages (hydrolysis, acidogenesis,
acetogenesis and methanogenesis). Anaerobic processes divert a small amount
(about 14%) of the available energy for microbial growth (10% for fermentative
bacteria, and 4% for methanogens), and most of the energy (about 86%) is
stored in the end product,CH4.
Biogas composition
The composition of biogas varies with type of feedstock and operating
condition of the digester. In general, biogas consists of 5075% CH4 and 2550%
CO2 along with other trace components like water vapor (H2O), hydrogensulfide
(H2S), and ammonia (NH3). CH4 is the only component of biogas that contributes
to the heating value.
Biogas applications
Biogas is renewable energy carrier with a potential for diverse enduse
applications such as heating, combined heat and power(CHP) generation,
cost digesters are being constructed using polyethylene tubular film. In colder
areas, plastic bagi s often buried to provide insulation.
