and the investment firm D.E. Shaw and in 1990 became the youngest senior vice president

AMAZON NAME

When Amazon was started initially, its name was Cadabra as in

"abracadabra but One day Jeff Bezos was talking to his lawyer on phone
about some legal issues. The lawyer misheard the name of Company name
as "Cadaver". This made Jeff to decide to change his company's name. Jeff
started by going through words in dictionary. He settled on Amazon as it
meant exotic and different just as he wanted his store to be. Jeff Bezos
changed its name to Amazon. The reason behind is that alphabetically this
name stands at the top when listed somewhere. He also thought that if
someone prepares an alphabetized list of companies, Amazon will come on
top. This will help it to get a lot of preference among users. Because in those
days search engines showed results in alphabetical order and "A" was listed
first and Secondly, Amazon River is the earth biggest river and he want to
make his store just like the same (Amazon.com launched with the tagline
"Earth's biggest book store")
Amazon.com sold its first book from Jeff Bezos' Seattle area garage in July of
1995. The book was Fluid Concepts & Creative Analogies: Computer Models
of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought.

Customers voice is constantly heard inside the Amazon

Bezos is very accessible to his customers with an easy-to-find email address
jeff@amazon.com. When customers send Bezos an email complaining about something
Amazon-related, Bezos forwards the message to the appropriate person at the company.
The only addition Bezos makes to the email is one character: "?"
"When Amazon employees get a Bezos question mark e-mail, they react as though they've
discovered a ticking bomb. They've typically got a few hours to solve whatever issue the
CEO has flagged and prepare a detailed explanation for how it occurred, a response that
will be reviewed by a succession of managers before the answer is presented to Bezos
himself. Such escalations, as these e-mails are known, are Bezos's way of ensuring that the
customer's voice is constantly heard inside the company."
Jeff Bezos PowerPoint prohibition

When you have to write your ideas out in complete sentences, complete paragraphs it
forces a deeper clarity. If you ever get into a flow of writing, youll notice something
amazing happens. Your brain produces thoughts and ideas faster than your fingers can

type them. Youre totally in the zone. Its an exciting, yet frantic experience, because you
want to write down all of the thoughts so you dont forget them.

In Amazon board meetings are structured around a 6 page narrative memo. It involves the
presenter preparing a 4-6 page memo written as a document, not a PowerPoint
presentation. The first 20 minutes of a meeting is spent reading the document quietly as a
group. After 20 minutes, the group then discusses the content of the memo, often
questioning the presenter very diligently but, the idea here is to truly debate the points
made in the memo and let truth win out through a very healthy debate. At the end,
recommendations are discussed and decisions are made. So Think complex, speak
simple. It is hard work to prepare well enough to be able to speak simple.
