Australian Embassy Bombing - Jakarta - September 2004

The 2004 Australian embassy bombing took place on 9 September 2004 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
A one-tonne car bomb, which was packed into a small Daihatsu delivery van, exploded outside
the Australian Embassy at Kuningan District, South Jakarta, at about 10:30 local time (03:30 UTC),
killing 9 people including the suicide bomber, and wounding over 150 others. It gutted the Greek
Embassy on the 12th floor of an adjacent building, where three diplomats there were slightly
wounded. Damage to the nearby Chinese embassy was also reported.
Numerous office buildings surrounding the embassy were also damaged by the blast, which
shattered windows in buildings 500 metres (500 yd) away, injuring many workers inside, mostly
by broken glass.
A dispute ensued as to how many civilians lost their lives after the explosion: local health authorities
in Jakarta reported 9 deaths, compared to 11 deaths reported by Australian officials. All Australians
working at the embassy were reported alive. Among the victims killed were embassy security guard
Anton Sujarwo, 23, and four Indonesian policemen on duty at the embassy. The rest were civilians,
including the embassy gardener, Suryadi, 34, two embassy workers, a visa applicant, and a pedestrian.

Dr. Azahari bin Husin was a Malaysian who was believed to be the
technical mastermind behind the 2002 Bali bombing. He was killed in a
police raid on his hideout in Indonesia in 2005. He was nicknamed the
"Demolition Man".

He received extensive bomb training in Afghanistan. He authored the

JI bomb manual, used in the Bali bombing and the 2003 Marriott Hotel
bombing. He also planned the 2004 Jakarta embassy bombing and was
implicated in the 2005 Bali bombings. Prior to his death, he was one of
the most wanted men in Indonesia along with Noordin Mohammed Top.

YOGYAKARTA

The video shows the truck making a U-turn before returning to the
embassy.
One camera shows a sweeper in a blue shirt near the embassy and a
black Silver Bird taxi, then there's a shudder and the trees bend and
people are seen running from the blast.

He is believed to have left JI and set up a more violent splinter group,

Tanzim Qaedat al-Jihad. Noordin, nicknamed "Moneyman", was an
indoctrinator who was specialized in recruiting militants into becoming
suicide bombers and collecting funds for militant activities

Another camera, across the road from the embassy, shows the truck
veering suddenly left towards the embassy before disappearing out of the
shot.

Noordin and Azahari Husin were thought to have masterminded the 2003
JW Marriott hotel bombing in Jakarta, the 2004 Australian Embassy
Bombing in Jakarta, the 2005 Bali bombings and the 2009 JW Marriott
- Ritz-Carlton bombings, and Noordin may have assisted in the 2002
Bali Bombings.

Suddenly a huge cloud of dust and debris flies across the screen and a
figure is seen running from behind the camera towards the blast.
Police plan to enlarge the footage to see whether there were two or three
people in the van and to find other details that might help identify the
bombers.

He was killed during a police raid in Solo, Central Java, on

17 September 2009 conducted by the Indonesian anti-terrorist team,
Densus 88

Azahara was a close associate of Jemaah Islamiyah's former operational

chief, Riduan Isamuddin (better known as Hambali), who was captured
in Thailand in 2003.

SURABAYA

The footage showed to journalists by Indonesian Police Chief General

Da'i Bachtiar shows the silver truck driving on the far side of the divided
road where the embassy is located.

Noordin Top was a Muslim extremist and was Indonesia's most wanted
Islamist militant. He is thought to have been a key bomb maker and/or
financier for Jemaah Islamiah (JI). The FBI referred to Noording as "an
explosives expert"and "an officer, recruiter, bombmaker, and trainer for
the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) group."

In July 2004, Azahari and Noordin narrowly escaped a police raid on a

rented house west of Jakarta, where forensic experts later found traces
of explosives used in the embassy bombing. Neighbours described both
as reclusive men who left the property only to pray at a nearby mosque;
and they said that before the bombing, they saw the duo loading heavy
boxes into a white delivery van which is the same type used in that attack.

After a gun battle and series of explosions (including a suicide bomber)

BOMB CONSTRUCTION

The construction of the bomb resembled the one used in

the Bali bombing. The bombers again used blue, red and
purple Tupperware containers as a casing for the
explosives.
These findings were made by investigators from the
Forensic Laboratory Center at National Police
Headquarters after sifting through material from the scene.

Islamist web site, www.islamic-minbar.com, posted the following statement by Jemaah Islamiah

"..We decided to settle accounts with Australia, one of the worst enemies of God
and Islam, ... and a Mujahadeen brother succeeded in carrying out a martyr
operation with a car bomb against the Australian embassy... It is the first of a
series of attacks. ... We advise Australians in Indonesia to leave this country
or else we will transform it into a cemetery for them.
