Project Design Principles

Audience/Public
o Who do you want to access and engage with this project and why?
I would like for everybody, regardless of race and ethnicity, to
access and engage with my project because of the fact that the
topic of racism and discrimination is an important, but
sensitive topic to address and by incorporating a media focus
with this, it will hopefully inspire and allow others to be more
vocal in expressing their thoughts and opinions in regards ot
this topic.
Purpose
o What is it that your project aims to do?
My project will aim to alleviate any racial discrepancies or
negative/inaccurate opinions or stereotypes given towards the
Black race by mass media. By displaying these statements
given by students, it will address the claim given towards Black
people by the media and will hopefully create some sort of
inclusion within our campus community.
Context
o What other similar projects or media currently exist? How will you engage
with them, if at all?
Other projects that exist that are similar to my project are the
I, Too, Am Harvard Tumblr page, I, Am, Too CofC (College of
Charleston), and several other predominately White
institutions with a similar focus. I will engage with them,
particularly focusing on College of Charleston and Harvard
University by recreating this idea, but tailoring it to Wofford
College and how students of color believe that White students
view them as based off of the medias perception that it gives
off.
Medium
o What is the platform you have chosen for your project (film, photography,
Pathbrite, etc.) and why?
I have chosen to go with photography and displaying them on
the popular website Tumblr, as I have already made an account
and are hopefully going to design the webpage soon. Tumblr
(or even WordPress) would be good outlets to use due to the
interactivity as well as the flexibility to be creative with
whatever you decide to post.
Organization

Franklin 2

o How will your project be laid out? Will you emphasize a vertical,
horizontal, or hyperlinked environment?
I am hoping to have a hyperlinked environment, alongside a
vertical movement on the page to display photographs and
other prominent information.
Navigation
o How will users be able to navigate through your project and how will this
affect their understanding of the project as a whole?
Users will be able to navigate through my project by
interacting with photographs, listening or reading the
statements given by the students, and additionally reading
more about each particular incident and how the student
reacted.
Visual Layout
o Will you be using film clips, photographs, abstract designs, bright colors,
muted colors, black and white, lots of white space, black background, etc.
How do these choices contribute to the meaning of your project?
Photographs, along with bright colors and a black background
will be used during this project that will convey the message of
solidarity that I am presenting with this project. As Black is
often times worn for mourning, it can also be used as a way of
showing solidarity for whatever purpose it may be. Black in
this case will show solidarity for the students of color and their
negative experiences that they have encountered due to the
racial bias shown by White students.
Content Distribution
o How will you include the research component of your essay? Will it form
the content of the project, or will it be accessible in another way?
It will form the content of the project, and will hopefully be
accessible somewhere on the Tumblr page.
Affordances
o What will people be able to do within your project? Will the be able to
make comments, add videos or photos, donate money, edit the document,
add map points, link to other sources, or none of these?
People will be able to make comments, add responses/replies to
the photos, and most importantly share the messages from the
project to others.
