Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand
and what then followed. Jesus sent
his disciples by boat to Bethsaida,
while he retired to the mountain to
pray. As darkness settled, a violent
storm ensued and the disciples
were in the middle of the sea. It is at
that point that the Scripture startles
us with this poignant statement, He
saw them.
The sea of Galilee has a
circumference of thirty-three miles
and is thirteen miles long and eight
miles wide. It is impossible to see
even a large ship on a clear day in
the middle of the sea. Yet in the
blackest of nights, in the midst of
the storm, Jesus not only saw them,
but saw their desperation, toiling in
rowing. And He came to their aid,
walking on the waves in the midst of
the storm.
Around the world today, in India,
in Sudan, in Indonesia, in China,
in North Korea, and in a growing
number of lesser known places,
there swirls a thick, dark storm cloud
of persecution which surrounds the
people of God. It is now believed that
there have been more martyrs in this
generation than in all preceding ones

together. We often forget, because
those who are suffering are faceless.
We do not see them – we cannot
know them. But there is One, who
assures us that it is not so with Him.
And He saw them . . . may be written
over the life of every suffering saint.
In the Old Testament, the
wandering Hagar discovered that
God had His eye on her as she sat
by the well Lahi-roi, meaning the
well of Him that liveth and seeth me
(Genesis 16:14). He is the same
today. He is alive – and He sees. And
when He sees He comes to meet us
in our sufferings and trials.
Western Christianity has known
little of the suffering endured by
the rest of the world, and thus we
easily lose the awareness of our
need for His presence. But suffering
and persecution is nearer than
we think. Enmity and contempt for
Christ and His people is increasing
exponentially in this country and in
Europe. Secular humanism as well
as radical Islam present a clear and
present danger. But of this we may
be assured, that no matter what our
situation may be, He will see us,
know our struggles, and in a manner
befitting our need, will come walking
on the waves to our aid.
It is good to remember God’s
good hand with us. In Luke 16:25,
the Word says . . . Son, remember.
. . . There have been several
recent activities that brought
back memories of the dear Lord’s
gracious dealing, leading, and
blessing.
In December, Joyce and I
reflected on our 54 years of service
with Source of Light. God has
wonderfully provided for us and
for this faith ministry as it has
expanded beyond what we or other
members could have imagined in
those early years. Some of you,
our readers, have been used of
God to help, by encouragement of
prayer, support, communication,
and advice. To God be the glory for
the souls saved; the Word of God
through Bible lessons distributed,
now in 144 languages with more
translations in process; disciples
made; and many churches planted.
I have been reminded of our
Director, Dr. Bill Shade’s first
message to us, “The best is yet to
be,” and have praised God with
full heart as the reports indicate
new lessons, languages, countries,
methods, and technology for God’s
Good News.
Other memories are of the
passing of dear missionary friends
with SLM. One was my brother-
in-law, Don Nabinger, who went
to be with the Lord last year. I had
great respect and appreciation for
his pioneer missionary work in the
rugged Yukon village work, and
later as he used our adapted Bible
lessons to reach souls in many
villages. Another, Mel Sheppard
just went to be with the Savior he
loved. It was my great privilege
to pray weekly with Mel in Cam
Thompson’s prayer room, and to
travel and minister with him here
and in other countries.
Recently it has been my
privilege to visit churches that use
our Bible lessons for door-to-door
evangelism, neighborhood Bible
studies, Sunday school and prayer
meeting study, and prison ministry.
So Son, remember is not just for
past blessings, but for what God is
doing right now. Praise His Name!

It was said that it “couldn’t be done.”
How can a ministry be conducted chiefly
through volunteers in a country where
the national average yearly income was
estimated by the World Bank in 2005 to
be $120 (40 cents a day)?
Most people in the city rely on public
transport to get from place to place and
it is not free to ride in those taxis or
buses. How would these volunteers
afford to pay for their transport? Not
only the cost of the transport was to
be considered, but also the struggle to
get that transport. Kinshasa is a city
of over five million people and the
transportation system is not adequate
to meet the needs. One has to often
wait for hours and then fight to get a
seat in the overly crowded run-down
vehicle. Who would go through all that

from our office to students all over the
city? No one, unless it was someone
committed to carrying out the Great
Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ
(Matthew 28:19-20).
One must understand that Kinshasa,
the capital of the Democratic Republic
of the Congo, doesn’t have a properly
functioning postal system. Even if it
was functioning, most of the population
could not afford to use it.
So, if a Bible correspondence
program was going to work, the lessons
would have to be hand delivered.
In 2000, Brian and Gwenda Trapp
began a Source of Light Associate
Discipleship School in Kinshasa.
Using a small laundry room as an
office, they hired one worker, Alain
Elembo, to process the French lessons.
Alain was a committed Christian and
worked through the lessons eagerly.
He passed the news onto his friends
and people began coming to the
office to pick up lessons for friends,
family, work associates, churches, and
military buddies. Soon, there were
people waiting outside the office, all
volunteers, to collect their lessons and
take them to their mission fields.

International in Madison, will celebrate
its 8th anniversary this year. Vadette
Nlandu, a national Congolese, directs
the ministry with a board of national
directors. They have enrolled 6,950
students, and 160 of these students have
reported that they have received Christ
through doing the lessons. King’s
Source of Light Congo is an officially
recognized non-profit organization
in the Congo and will complete the
purchase of its own property this year.
The ministry has recently partnered
with Missionary Aviation Fellowship,
who has agreed to take lessons into
areas where they fly regularly in the
interior of the Congo. Volunteers
traveling into neighboring countries
have also brought new students to the
ministry from Rwanda and Congo
Brazzaville.
The biggest challenge we now face
is keeping up with our volunteers. We
have the laborers, but we are having a
hard time keeping up with the supply
of lessons. Please pray that God will
keep our shelves stocked with lessons
so that students will not have to wait
to do lessons. We currently have 500
students on waiting lists.
A soldier recently wrote to share
this testimony: “I was attending an
African traditional cult. God met me
through the Bible lessons. Since that
time, I decided to stop attending that
cult. I surrendered my heart to God.
Now I can read the Bible, watch and
listen to the Christian TV and radio
programs which I couldn’t do before.”

us . . . according to his own purpose

adequately sums up the story of Haile
Selassie Tefera and his wife, Tsedale.
Born and reared in Christian homes
in Ethiopia, both Haile and Tsedale
came to know Jesus as personal
Savior when they were teenagers.
Haile relates that the complete change
in his sister’s life after she became a
Christian convinced him he should
do the same and so, at the age of
seventeen, he trusted Christ as His
Savior. At the University of Ethiopia,
Haile met and later married Tsedale.
In 1990, Haile received an
opportunity to immigrate to the United
States, where he hoped to achieve the
American dream. He was eventually
able to own a home, a car, and
everything he and his family wanted.
He says that during those years, God
was shut up in a closet and once in
a while he would open the door and
talk to Him. Otherwise, he didn’t give
God any time in his life. But that all
changed.
In 2004, former SLM director,
Glenn Dix, met Haile and later Tsedale.
Learning that they were Christians,

Glenn brought Haile to see the ministry
of Source of Light. When he saw the
courses and realized the powerful
impact they could have on the country
of Ethiopia, Haile expressed a desire
to financially support a Branch office in
Addis Ababa. Haile thought they would
live in America and support the ministry
in Ethiopia, but God had other ideas.
On a trip to Ethiopia in 2006, East
Africa director, Jack Stiles, challenged
Haile to consider returning to Ethiopia
to direct the ministry there. His
immediate reaction was, “No way.”
This all changed as Haile began to
observe how God was using him to
promote the ministry in Ethiopia
When Haile returned home, he
asked Tsedale if she would like to
return to Ethiopia as a missionary, and
she replied, “God has been talking to
me about that in my prayer time.”
The Tefera family, including their
three daughters, plan to return to
Ethiopia in July. Pray for their remain-

vital work in Ethiopia.

Joe teamed in ministry, reaching
many through Billy Graham films
and Bible studies.
Georgia became their home when
God revealed a new plan for them.
They sold their home, bought an RV,
and set out to “find a need and fill
it.” Their travels have taken them
to Child Evangelism Fellowship,
Warrenton, Missouri, and Wycliffe
headquarters in Orlando, Florida.
They have been active in “Campers
on Mission” for several years.
A few months ago, a large RV
turned into SLM parking lot. Two
people came in and with a hearty
greeting said, “We’re the Certains, full-
time mission ministry volunteers!”
What a joy to have servants so willing
to go anywhere, at any given moment,
to serve Christ! Madison Discipleship
School is growing. They have been a
tremendous help, grading lessons and
sharing Bible truths with students.
Their enthusiasm and excitement over
what God is doing in a life is evident
every day. We’re glad they’re here!

W hen, in the course of human
events, it becomes necessary
for one people to dissolve the bonds
which have connected them with
another . . . Not pleasant words,
but, in the nature of the case,
necessary. So begins the document
that changed the course of history
on this continent and created the
land of liberty we enjoy today.
T here are times that such
action is still called for and
that time came for SLM in relation
to our former partnership with
AJI India. After years of trying to
correct the problems in the central
office, SLM decided to terminate
that relationship in January of
this year. But the problems were
at the administrative level - the
workers and evangelists of AJI
were all doing an outstanding
job. Scores of churches planted,
hundreds of souls saved, yet we
were forced by biblical principle
to take the action we did.
G od is always previous and

in this matter. No sooner had we
taken the action of separation
from AJI than the Zonal Leaders

contacted us, asking to come with
SLM and continue their ministry
under our direction. That meant
resignation from AJI, and it
also meant a huge step of faith
involving support, properties,
and more. But so serious were the
problems they felt compelled to
take that step.

we have to have registration with
the Government as a religious
organization, or a partnership
with an existing national
organization. Again, God was
previous. Seven years ago, I had

W hat happens to trees and house
roofs and other buildings
during hurricane season in Florida?
They are uprooted and damaged or
destroyed. Why? Because they were
not firmly “grounded,” or established
on a secure and sure foundation.
S ince 2005, it has been the goal
of SLM to provide doctrinally
sound Bible study materials to
Mainland China. The purpose has
been that Chinese churches would be
established in their faith. “Our hope
is built on nothing less than Jesus’
blood and righteousness” is as true
for our brothers and sisters in China
as it is for us here in America. Nothing
else but a firm understanding of
the living Word of God will provide
stability and security to the believer.
M ass distributions of SLM
literature characterized 2005-
2006, with just a few testimonies
received about the impact of the
literature. In 2007, the focus shifted
to more specific distributions and
the testimonies and reports are
thrilling. One missionary pastor was
so impressed by the SLM courses
that he began using them in all his
growing churches. He reported that
the new believers were delighted

to have a book like ours to
carry with them to church.
He taught a Sunday evening
Bible class using SLM’s New
Life in Christ 1 course. He
has requested 6,000 of the New
Life in Christ 2 course, to teach his
congregations. Praise the Lord!
I n another large city, two men have
organized an extensive network of
church fellowship groups that have
targeted colleges and universities
— 65% of their church members are
students. Most are new believers.
In mid-2007, SLM was delighted to
provide 500 copies of the New Life
in Christ 1 to follow up these new
believers. By the end of the year, the
fellowships had grown to over 700
members, so the leaders requested,
and SLM provided them with 1,000
copies of New Life in Christ 2. It is
our great joy to partner with these
Chinese church planters.
I n 2008, SLM will be expanding its
ministry into other areas of China.
For this expansion, we will need
$5,000 to print more Bible courses.
Along with the explosive growth of
the Church in China, there has been
a proliferation of cults and various
exotic religions that masquerade
as biblical Christianity. So people
understand the difference, we need
to continue to publish and distribute
books that contain solid Bible
teaching. Remember that we can
print a 12-lesson Bible course (bound
together in one small volume) for just
25 cents per book. Your gift of $250
will provide 1,000 Bible courses to
believers in China. Will you join with

In response to a request from
our Chinese brethren, SLM
has published a very attractive
Olympic souvenir booklet in the
Chinese language to be distributed
during the Games. The booklet
includes information about the
Olympics and a place to write
in new records. The heart of the
booklet is a beautiful presentation
of the Gospel, called “Who is
Jesus Christ?” Hundreds of

 John and Susan Cranmer began
their ministry with SLM International
in December, 1972. Over the years,
John and Susan have been involved in various areas of SLM’s ministry.
Presently, John is print shop clerk and responsible for submitting orders
for materials to be printed, and is also in charge of inventory control
for all lessons and literature printed. Susan is secretary for the Field
Ministries Department. Along with secretarial work, she spends many
hours a day tracking the ministry of our Discipleship Training Branches.
We at Source of Light commend John and Susan for 35 years of faithful
service.
