Conversely, during the time when Republicans held control of the House, Senate and

Presidency, they used their power to pass economic policies that led to the most serious
financial crisis since the Great Depression. Despite this fact, Republicans continue to revise
history, accuse Democrats of fiscal irresponsibility and vote in lockstep against President

Just this last week, the Senate Banking Committee moved to approve financial reform

them.

The American people are starting to resent the "politics of no" and the Republicans are
quickly devolving into the "party of no tolerance." Recently, leading intellectual and former
Bush White House aide, David Frum, was fired from his fellowship at the conservative-leaning
think tank, American Enterprise Institute, after he was critical of the Republican strategy
against President Obama's health-care overhaul. Bruce Bartlett, who was also fired by a right
wing think tank in 2005 for writing a book critical of George W. Bush's policies, commented
that "rigid conformity is being enforced, no dissent is allowed."

Republicans need to understand that elections matter -- even when they don't win them.
America voted overwhelming for Barack Obama because they wanted big change, and now
they are getting it. The President deserves a chance to realize his agenda, and I hope that by
the November mid-term election, Americans will see that Democrats are the only ones
working to put forth policy initiatives to move our country forward.

Many here have made the argument that our president is a respectful man. They also claim
due to his principals, intelligence and diplomatic manner is how he won the presidency
and continues to be great by adhering to these attributes. Because of all of this he is our
best president.

On respect:

Respectful enough to walk away from the PM of Israel? Respectful enough to shun President Sarkozy
on Obama's first trip to France? Respectful enough for returning the Churchill bust to Britain?

On the campaign, election and victory of President Obama vs. McCain:

And "burned McCain"? For somebody (Obama) that said off shore drilling was off base when McCain
said it, what has he done? When he was against the surge in Iraq and now claims his policies
created a victory in a war he was totally against, what does that make him? Taxing health care
benefits, when McCain argued for it and now Obama is for it?

Sounds as if he is adopting some of McCain's ideas. And he has rarely spoken respectfully to the
opposition. He talks down to those he disagrees with. Maybe today he has listened just a little to the
other side (Off shore drilling), however the devil is in the details. Too soon to judge on this one.

Thanks, Barbra -- another wise assessment of the present and future of this great country. But the
Republicans are most worried about white folks not being in power any more.. That's what all this
anger and rage and spitting and namecalling is about -- did you reach Frank Rich in the NYTIMES last
Sunday ("Week in Review")? All this hatred is the poisoned underground river of white supremacy,
which has always been there in America. Nothing the T(hreat) Party can do will stop the coming
demoraphics from changing the country forever.

Please, the phony cries of racism are getting old and tired. I'm still waiting for the video of the
protesters allegedly hurling racial epithets at the CBC. After all, the CBC walked through the
crowd with their own video cameras rolling, so why it hasn't been posted on youtube yet?
Maybe because it never happened? But why bother about dealing with the truth when it's so
much easier to cry racism? When you can't defend your legislation it 's easy to fling charges
of racism.

wow, patches and the judge have their k.ni.ckers in a twist - well, MA isn't going broke due
to universal healthcare - people are paying into the system and spreading the risk around -
the problem is that Private Insurance still has a hold on the market - go to single, national
payer, problem solved - Medicare isn't going broke - it is underfunded to the extent that only the middle
class earner pays a fair share of it - billionaires incomes are mostly not taxed to contribute to soc.sec.
and medicare, and under Reagan and Bush their f.i.c.a income was generously under-taxed - off-
shore havens, lower rates for bilionaires - it all contributes to a shortage of $ to run the country - add to
that the war in Iraq, which de-stabilized the region, drew converts to al-queda, and cost the lives of
hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi's and American soldiers - well, worth it?not a chance -

1. Universal Health care IS contributing to MA debt.

2.Over taxed and over regulated MA keeps its economy down and business
opportunity down.
3.Tax base is down because like here in NY, people and businesses are fleeing. No
business equals no jobs and therefore less of a tax base to collect on. Also more
dependency on the state for public assistance.
Tax limit of Earned Inc Max Tax
Maximum SS individual tax rate for 2010 is: Social Security 6.20% $106,800 $6,621.60
This however does not include the employer's contribution. Medicare is 1.45% with no ceiling.
Self employed pay a combined 15.3% to both programs. It is a regressive tax meaning their
are no offsets to this tax. In example by deductions use as offset to the tax. If you wanted
more money for Social Security, it might just be easier to remove the cap on individuals and
businesses.

FICA taxes are unavoidable and your argument of offshore kept rich people from paying what
would be a maximum SS tax per individual @$6621.60 for 2010 has nothing to do with
billionaires avoiding this tax. They, in the majority of cases, have a declared earned income
in excess of the maximum of $106,800.00.

This is the closest thing to a flat tax that exists in this country. Self employed people get a
small adjust at the bottom of the scale when calculating this tax.

History will decide who was on the wrong side of this issue. Just like the Iraq war, which you railed
against, the GOP will be vindicated by history. Joe Biden recently TRIED TO TAKE CREDIT FOR THE
TURN AROUND IN IRAQ, despite being vehemently against the surge that turned it around. Talk about
chutzpah!

Barbara... Look around, the same plan in MA is going BROKE! We cannot continue to run this country
on emotions.... bills have to be paid and we aren't paying ours. Social Security just went red and will
get redder ever year. Doctors will be running away from medicare reimbursement because they can't
pay their bills with those reimbursements alone. The one thing I thought was good about this
monstrous bill actually was never in it, it fails to cover children with pre-exisisting conditions and yet,
Obama repeatedly claimed it did!!! Incompetence...???... or is that what happens when they can't or
DON'T actually read the bills they pass?

Conservatives don't want change, hence the name. They want to conserve the past and the status quo.
They are being true to their values when they say "no" to any change.

So by definition, conservatives will always be on the losing side of any historical change.
But on the winning side of everything that doesn't change.

So overall they win big, are now under Obama, and will continue to do so.
Sadly, regressive behavior is innately human.

Conservatism: disposition in politics to preserve what is established b : a political

philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established
institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change; specifically :
such a philosophy calling for lower taxes, limited government regulation of business and
investing, a strong national defense, and individual financial responsibility for personal
needs (as retirement income or health-care coverage)

We prefer gradual, thoughtful, and incremental change.

Abrupt social or institutional change leads to societal instability and division. (sound familiar)
A methodical, tested, and incremental approach to any large problem always produces
superior outcomes.

Nobody can conserve the past. It's done. But if YOU could conserve the past, That'sTheWay,
which of the past would you like to "conserve":

1. Slavery
2. Women having no votes
3. Illegal abortions
4. the Vietnam War

These are just a few of the "past" events which the rest of us have moved on, having fought
the right fight and won.

Besides, the Senate's job is to slow down the "hasty House" and ensure that bills are vetted.
We don't need any more GOP "slowmo slowdown" when the Bushies have already had l4
years (from the "angry white male" election of l994) to run a dictatorship with poor leadership
which almost destroyed America. Y'all left Obama with a mess and now think it's OK to
say "no" to any change?

We audition you, interview you, hire you, pay you - to take care of US, and what we say
(through elections) we want. You do not get to be in the minority and refuse to earn your
paycheck, any more than I do. If "politics is the art of compromise," Republicans can no
longer sit back in your comfortable chairs, draw your pay, and refuse to assist the other
members of Congress, and the duly-elected President of the United States, who are trying to
get the US back on its feet, and path.

I am most excited about the prospect of President Obama systematically DISMANTLING

THE REAGAN LEGACY. Those of you not old enough to remember the uber-prince of
conservatives, his phoney patriotism and pandering to the rich; you would do well to
research how it is we have come to this point in American History. We are here because the policies of
the venal and cynical Reagan-lovers have, over the last 20+ years transformed the U.S. from a middle-
class nation into a defacto banana republic.

You all should be incredibly concerned that the characters emerging against the current
administration are cut from the very same, mean-spirited cloth as Reagan: the Mitt Romneys, the
Sarah Palins, Newt Gingrich and the like. If they don't scare you, then you're not paying enough
attention.

Maybe you should be more concerned with Obama and less concerned Reagan. With his
just announced "drill, baby, drill" and the previously announced 30,000 troop "surge" in
Afghanistan, he's looking more like a Republican by the minute. But let me guess, since
Obama's now doing what he campaigned against (because they were Republican
initiatives) it's ok - because it's Obama. What a joke.

You need to revisit Obama's campaign objectives, one of which was to

decrease American's dependency on foreign oil. Also, if you think
Obama is "looking like a republican" then you haven't been paying
attention.

So, go ahead and vote for Romney or Gingrich or whomever on the other side if that
makes you "feel" better.

Remember, Obama: chess. Republicans: checkers. Big difference. Which game do

you play?

Barbara,

We finally have a president who has turned "Yes We Can" into "Yes We Did". I haven't seen
the Democrats this unified and effective since Clinton, to which you have alluded. It's a major fact that
the Democrats are the only ones getting anything done and the republicans are living in another
century, unable to grow up and move forward with the rest of us and get with times. They have become
a party of lunatics, religious finatics, of violence, vitriol, immature sore losers, unproductive, irrelevent
and ineffective. They and their ilk do nothing but cause more problems, and don't offer solutions. Even
Conservative voters will begin to grow tired of these tactics and it's possible will begin to vote for
Democrats.

I love reading Barbara's articles. Very insightful! If it's any concession, Bill Clinton was really
on the ropes at this point in his presidency. He lost his health care debate and
Congressional elections were devastating. If Obama plays his cards right and capitalizes
on the TRUTH about HC Reform, the student loan reform, jobs bill(s) with at least 2 more coming, and
the fact that the DOW is at nearly 11,000 from 6500 and the GDP has seen a 12% turn around, then I
believe there will be insignificant change in Congress. He needs to get out there and turn up the
volume as the tightie righties have a much bigger set of speakers. Somehow the "Liberal Media"
doesn't seem so Liberal anymore. Obama has more momentum than Clinton had at this point by far
and look at how his presidency turned out (other than the Monica thing). The problem is that Obama
wants us to invest in our future and so many "government investments" in the past turned out to be
massive losses. No one wants to trust the government to invest because the other side will just tear
down everything they can out of spite, ruining the chances of success. Just wait until the GOP gets the
WH and tries to sabotage HC Reform, while blaming Obama for the effects of their sabotage.
