pilingisapossibilityifalargercomponentisfittedandincreased
volumewillresultifasmallercomponentisfitted.
Drillingandtappingoftheentriesshouldonlybecarriedoutby
themanufactureroftheenclosureorhisapprovedagent.The
threadsoftheentriesarerequiredtobecompatiblewiththoseof
thecableglandsorconduitintermsoftypeofthread,threadpitch
andclearancetolerancesinceflamepaths existatthesepoints.
Gasketscanonlybereplaced,theymustnotbeadded
retrospectivelyifnotincludedaspartoftheoriginaldesign.
ObstructionofFlamepath
Asolidobstructionsuchasawall,steelwork,conduit,bracketsor
weatherguards orotherelectricalequipmentincloseproximityto
theopeningofthejointcan,intheeventofaninternalexplosion,
reducetheefficiencyoftheflamepath totheextentthatignitionof
theexternalgasorvaporcouldoccur.Minimumdistancesbetween

WeatherproofingExdEquipment
Ingeneral,theuseofExdflameproofequipmentwithouttheuseofgasketsorseals
willonlyprovideprotectionuptoIP54.ForapplicationsrequiringhigherlevelsofIP
protection,theuseofgasketsintegratedwithintheflamepath isacommonoptionto
consider.Otherweatherproofingmaterialsconsideredandcommonlyusedarenon
hardeninggreasebearingtextiletapeintheUKandnonsettinggreaseorcompounds.
Theuseofnonsettinggreaseonmachinedsurfacesofflamepaths hastwoadvantages
sinceinadditiontoprovidinganadditionallevelofingressprotection,italsoinhibits
theformationofrustonthesesurfaces.Siliconebasedgreasesrequirecareful
considerationinordertoavoidpossibledamagetotheelementsofgasdetectors.
