UsuallythefirstandmostcommonexperienceofmoreadvancedQigongisZiFaGong.Onceenergyhasbeen
cultivatedanddevelopedthroughDongGongandJingGongitwilltrytobreakthroughtheblockages(naturalhealing)
thatobstructtheflowofchithroughoutthebody.ThisprocesscausesthespontaneousmovementsofZiFaGong.A
goodmetaphorforthethreebasicsetsisthemaintenanceofacar.DongGongislikecheckingthatthecarstyresoil,
exhaustandengineareallingoodworkingorder.JingGongislikeputtingpetrolinthecarandZiFaGongistakingit
foratestdrive.ChinesepractitionersoftensaythatpracticingZiFaGongislikeinvitingaDoctorintoyourbodyfora
checkup.
Thesespontaneousmovementsareinvoluntaryexternalmanifestationsofacertainstateofmeditation.Whenthe
practitioneradoptsacertainphysicalpositionandachievestotalrelaxation,thebrainentersacertainstatewhichallows
themovementstotakeplace.Theytendtocentregenerallyontheailingpartsofthebodyandinotherpartsofthebody
whicharerelatedtothoseailingparts.Typicalexamplesincludeswayingofthelimbs,walking,turningaround,jumping,
dancing,foldingandstretching,tapping,thumping,massagingofailingspotsandtheirrelatednervousandblood
circulationnetworks,crying,laughingandshouting.Thelocation,form,extent,durationandrhythmofthesemovements
areverydiverse.Theyvaryaccordingtothephysicalcondition,temperament,personalbackground,thetypeand
severityoftheailmentsandlengthofQigongpractice.Itshouldbenotedthatsomepeopledonotexperiencethese
movementsatall,butbeginnersneedguidancebeforetheyexperiencethem.Apartfromexternalmovements,internal
movementsmayalsooccur.However,apartfromthemoreobviousphenomenasuchasabdominalnoise,breakingwind
andincreasedsalivaproduction,mostinternalmovementsarenotfelt.Yetbothtypeshavetheirownhealingeffects.
Thecauseofspontaneousmovements
Itisoneoftheinstinctsofthehumanbodytoadjustitsbiologicalbalancethroughthemovementsofthebody.
Researcherssuggestthatwhenthebrainentersadeepmeditativestatetheelectricwavesinthebrainflowouttoreach
theentiresurfaceofthetemples.Whenthepractitionerentersaregulatedanddisciplinedstateofmeditationand
breathingexercise,someofthenerveclustersundertheskinbecomeliberatedfromtheabnormalsuppressionbymild
ailments.Theimpactofthisliberationgeneratesastrong,suddenburstofreactionintheformofelectricwaves,which
attackthelocationoftheailment.Thisprocessappearsexternallyasvariousmovementsinthosepartsofthebody
whichareconnectedbythenervousandbloodcirculationsystemswiththepartwheretheailmentislocated.These
movementsarethenatural,biologicalresponsetotheailment,arisingfromthebodysneedforadjustmentsandunder
thecontrolofthesubconsciousandnotimaginedorimposedfromoutside.However,sincebonesandmusclesare
mainlycontrolledbyconsciousness,thesemovementscanthereforealsobegenerated,controlledandterminatedby

Thefunctionsofselfgeneratedmovements
1)Theexerciseforselfgeneratedmovementsaimsatcalmingthebrainthroughtheinvoluntarymovementsofthe
limbs,therebyachievingageneraladjustmentofallbodilyfunctions.ItisahigherlevelQigongexercise,moreprofound
andmoreextensivethanpuremeditationorthoseexerciseswithconsciousmovements.
2)Theselfgeneratedmovementsaretheoutwardsignsofanaturalprocessofbiologicaladjustmentsandselfhealing.
Thisexercisesetsthebodyofftosearchoutandattacktheailmentsofthebody.Thisisamoreaccurate,moresuitable
andmoreeffectivewayofselfhealingthanconsciouslysearchingforailments.Itiscalledthesuperiordoctornotonly
becauseitishighlyeffectiveincuringailments,butalsobecauseithasanevengreatereffectinpreventingdiseases.
3)Itcanhelpimprovephysicalfitnessandawakenpotentialintelligence.
4)Whenreachingahighlevelofthisexercise,itcanhelptoregulatethefunctionsoftheinternalorgans,aswellasto
harmonieswithcosmicelectricenergyexternally,throughtheconsciousnessofthepractitioner.
ThecomplementaryfunctionsoftheinternalorgansandtheirrelationshipsarerepresentedbytheFiveBeasts(Five
Elements).Thesebeastscorrespondtotypesofspontaneousmovementobserved.Theyarerepresentedinthe

However,anoteofcautionisrequiredwhenconsideringQigongexercisesinvolvingspontaneousmovements.They
mustnotbecarriedoutbythosesufferingfromanyofthefollowing:mentalillness,hemorrhage,highfever,veryhigh
bloodpressure,acutecardiacdisorder,malignantandgrowingtumors,brokenbones,jointdislocation,convalescence
afteramajoroperation,acutegastriculcerswithfrequentperforations,acuteinflammationoftheliver,lungs,kidneys
andgallbladder,advancedtuberculosis,andforwomen:duringmenstruation,pregnancyandaftergivingbirth.Similarly
theexerciseshouldnotbecarriedoutwhenoneisveryhungry,afteralargemeal,verytired,inangerorinecstasy.
Themovementswhichoccurduringtheexerciseshouldnotbetooexaggeratedortooenergetictheyshouldbesuitably
controlledandnottoocontrived.Thedurationoftheexerciseshouldnotbetoolong.Generallyspeaking,itshouldlast
20to30minuteseachtimeandnomorethanonceortwiceperday.Chooseandopen,quietsitefortheexercise,where
theairisfreshandthegroundisflat.Donotexerciseonariverbank,boat,balcony,atgreatheightornexttomachinery.
Inaddition,donotlightlyundertaketoteachothersexercisesofthistype.Thosequalifiedtodosomustbewellversed
intheexercise,possessacertainlevelofmedicalknowledgeandhaveconfidenceinthecorrecttransmissionofboth
thetheoreticalandpracticalaspectsoftheexercise.Theymustalsobewellawareofthesafetymeasuresfor
preventingerrors.Aboveall,theymustbefamiliarwiththeexternalmanifestationsoftheinternalmovementsofenergy
soastoknowhowtodealcalmlywithdifferentthephenomenawhichariseduringtheexercise.
BeyondZiFaGongonecangoontopracticeformsofQigongsuchasGuanxiangFa.Themaintheoryandmethodof
thispracticeistoobserve(quanxiang/mingxaing)andcontemplate(cunxiang/cunsi)acertainimagerywhenoneisinthe
Qigongstate.Botharemethodsofconcentratingonesthoughtonthecontemplationofacertainpartofthebody,orofa
particularimageryofanobjectanditschanges.Thepracticeoftheadvancedlevelofinternalexercisesisamainlya
mentalexercise.ThemostcommononesbeingtheYiShouFaandGuanxiangFa.ThefunctionofYishouFaisto
meditateandconsolidatethechi.Itisthusaninternal,closedmethodforpracticingMingGong.GuanxiangFaonthe
otherhandcanbeappliedtoreflectontheinternalbodyanditsorgans,aswellastoenvisagefreelyallthethingsinthe
universe.Inotherwords,itcanbeclosedandinternaloropenandoutgoing.Notonlycanitbeemployedfrommeditation
andconsolidationofchi,therebyimprovingonesphysicalhealthandcuringdiseases,itcanalsobeemployedasa
vehicletoreachthechannelthroughwhichallthingsinnatureunitewiththeuniversetherebyattainingthestageof
XingGongtoelevate,improveandstimulatethefunctionsofthebrain.
ThetheoryofGuanxiangFaisbasedonthenaturalflowandevolutionoftheuniverseasperceivedthroughChinese
culture,thecentraltenetofwhichbeingtheunificationofmanwithnature.Ancientpeoplebelievethatallthingshadtheir
originintheDao.TheDaoisthemostprimevalandessentialofexistence,itpermeateseverycorneroftheuniverse
providingabasisforthecreationofallthings.Itissaid:TheDaobegetsone[thing],onebegetstwo,twobegetsthree
andthreebegetsall.Fromthiswasderivedtheconceptthatman,materialsandtheuniversesharethesame
fundamentalstructure.Thehumanbodyandnaturebreathethesameairandthetwoareconnected.Thehumanbodyis
asmalluniversewithinthelargeuniverse.Inaddition,thehumanbeingisthehighestandmostintelligentformofbeing
innature.Thus,ashumanbeingssharethesameoriginandstructurewithallotherbeingsintheuniverse,theyall
influenceoneanother.Theirrelationshipisoneofmutualinfluence,assimilationandexchange.Andthisrelationshipis
achievedthroughchi.Thechangesinthesmallandlargeuniversesareconstantlyaffectingoneanother.Ancientpeople
thereforebelievedthatmanshealthandlongevity,goodandbadfortunes,goodnessandevilandpovertyandprosperity
areallboundupwiththegreateruniverse,herebyderivingthetheoryoftheunitybetweenmanandtheuniverse.
Toanalyzethiswithmodernphysics,thesocalledchiisthecollectionofextremelyminutemoleculeswhichexist
betweensubstances.Theseformvariousfieldswhicharegovernedbycertainstructuresandorders,actingand
reactingupononeanotherinparticular,thestructureofthehumanfieldcanbealteredbyhumanconsciousness.Other
fieldscanalsobealteredbyhumanconsciousness.GuanxiangFacanalterthefieldstructureofthesubject[of
contemplation/meditation]therebybringingaboutachangeofposition.Forexample,inthecuringofanailment,human
consciousnessisusedtochangeanddestroytheabnormalityinthehumanfieldofthepatient,therebydrivingoutthe
ailmentwhichcausestheillness,sothatthepatientmaybebroughtbacktohealth.Iftheobject[oftheexercise]is
nature,thenitisamatterofimbibingthechiinordertochangethepositionsofthefieldsofthingsinnaturesoasto
amassenergytostrengthenthepractitionersownbiologicalfield.Whenthemassofenergyinthebiologicalfieldofthe
practitionerreachesacertainlevel,itwillundergoaqualitativequantumleap,enablingthepractitionertoinfluenceand
changeotherfields.

ThefactthatGuanxiangFaisabletoimprovethefunctioningofthebrainowesgreatdealtotheparticularstructureof
thebrain.Thehumanbraincomprises10cells,eachofwhichcanmakecontactwithseveralthousandsofnerves,giving
atotalcontactnumberofupto10.Eachcellcanbeseenasamultifunctioncomputer,andthecombinedcapacityof10
computersiswaybeyondourimagination.Eachhumanbeingonlyevermakesuseofafractionofitsbraininitsentire
life.
Thetwohalvesofthebrainarehighlyspecializedintheirfunctions.Theleftsideisthecentreofabstractthoughts(such
aslanguages,numbers,logic,analysis,deduction,symbolsandsoon)whiletherightsideisthecentreofimageries
(suchasformsandshapes,music,rhythms,spatialshapes,picturesandcolors).Thehumaneducationalsystemisled
bytheleftsideofthebrain.Thethreepointeducationsystemuseslanguage,logicandnumbersasmedia,whilst
imagesareusedrarelyandunsystematically.Theleftsideofthebrainhashadanupperhandforalongtime,andthe
rightsidehasbeenlargelyunderdeveloped.Infacttherightbrainhasastrongmaterialbase,astheperiodbetweenthe
timethatmanlefttheanimalstatetothetimeheacquiredlanguageandwritingwasfarlongerthanthehistoryof
civilization.Duringthosemanyhundredsofthousandsofyears,thehumanraceonlyusedtherightbraintothinkin
imageries.Thisiswhytherightbrainisthepowersourceofthebrain.GuanxiangFaisashortcuttodevelopingthe
potentialofthebrain(includingparanormalfunctions)throughthinkinginimageries.InthepracticeofQigong,whenone
entersastatewherethebrainfindsitselfinaparticulartimeandspace,thebillionsoffunctionsthathavebeen
accumulatingforthelasthundredsofthousandsofyearsmaybeactivated,andthecontactbetweenbraincells
becomeshighlyintensifiedandorderly.Itisasifthebrainhasenteredastateofsupremeclarity,likeafullmoonina
cloudlesssky.Atthispoint,notonlyiscontactmadewithinthebodyofthepractitioner,wherebythebrainreceives
messagesfromtheinternalorgansclearlysothatcontrolmaybeadjustedatthesametimethebrainbecomes
extremelysensitivetotheelectromagneticfieldoutsidethebodyofthepractitioner,enablingittomakecontactwith
