Take on any challenge in finance
This is a fast-paced programme which
kicks off in term one with four core courses
to immerse you in the essentials of finance.
During the remaining terms, and at your
own pace, you will complete your choice
of seven to 10 electives. Throughout, and
surrounding these essential elements, are
a range of practical and applied options
that extend the specialism and breadth
of your knowledge, such as London
Finance Experiences.

If you decide to extend your studies from

10 to 16 months with a fourth term, your
scope of programme experiences
expands: spend time on international
exchange at a partner institution or
undertake a company-sponsored project.
For maximum flexibility, you can decide on
this part way through the programme.
The attraction of studying on this Masters
in Finance programme is in no small part
due to the ambitious and high-achieving
cohort who see coming to London
Business School as a rare opportunity to
interact and build networks with students
from diverse industries and cultures.

As an example, the current full-time class

includes a Chilean portfolio manager, a
fund manager from Turkey, an
economist from Portugal, a British Credit
Trader, a corporate Banker from the
Philippines, a Colombian Attorney, and a
private equity analyst from South Korea.
Classmates like these offer you unmatched
levels of experience and expertise to learn
from.

Reach your potential in finance
The part-time format is specifically
designed to allow you to carry on working
full-time while you gain your Masters in
Finance. The content is the same as the
full-time programme, but you complete
your degree across 22 months.
This will be a demanding experience,
but the programme structure aims to
help students balance their work/life
commitments. It is also a good option
if you dont live in or near London.
In fact, our part-time intake includes
students who travel from across Europe.
The professional and cultural diversity
of the part-time class is astonishing,
reflecting the global nature of London

itself. For example, the current class

includes a Japanese portfolio manager,
a quantitative analyst from the US, a
Singaporean corporate lawyer, a British
investment strategist, a Danish CIO and
an investment analyst from Kuwait. Every
Masters in Finance class presents this
eclectic mix of professionals, providing
you with an outstanding global network.
The typical schedule
Year one begins with a full-time
introduction week, during which you
complete the Personal Assessment and
Development (PAD) core course, data
analytics and accounting pre-courses and
meet with Career Services to begin your
career development activities. Throughout

the rest of the year, you complete the

other three core courses and in terms two
or three, your first year elective*. Year one
classes run on alternate weekends
Friday evenings (typically 18.4521.30)
and Saturdays (typically 09.0015.30).
Year two focuses on the completion of
seven to 10 electives. Some of these run
in block-week formats and require
attendance from 08.15-15.30, Monday to
Friday for one week; others run in modular
formats (either Friday or Saturday,
bi-weekly); and others follow
an evening format, from 18.45-21.30.
There is some flexibility here and you
may be able to complete electives in a
daytime format.

Paul Tabberner (British) MiF2008,

An engineering degree meant I didnt have a
professional finance qualification, so when
my manager at Lloyds suggested this
Masters in Finance, I quickly came on
board. I work in an extremely specialised

part of finance and wanted a qualification

that would complement this. The
programme lets you get down to the finer
detail of the topics you choose, so it was
perfect.
The part-time programme is tough and
commitment is considerable. I had a small
child at the time, and I manage a team,
but you get through it and its well worth
the effort. The camaraderie and teamwork
on the programme mean I now have a
tight network of friends from those days.
I was amazed at what the programme gave
me much more than I expected.
I am significantly better at what I do now.
My approach to clients has changed; I can

better, which makes me more effective and
ultimately helps my career development.
I came away with a framework for looking
at financial problems, and a logic that
allows me to simplify complexity, grasp
new concepts and see wider
perspectives.
My team and I look after a number of the
banks mid markets relationships dealing
with businesses with a turnover between
15m and 500m. Theres much negative
perception around banking right now, but
the programme has enhanced my skills
and, in a tight job market, Im confident I
could use them in a number of financial
roles. I have a greater sense of security
knowing that I could diversify more than
others who havent had exposure.

The year
exceeded all

on all fronts.
Its the quality

prospective
employers.

The alumni view

Aisling Meany (Irish) MiF2009,

Associate, Rothschild

Where does a London Business School Masters in Finance

lead? Well let some of our graduates tell you

Following formal accountancy training,

I wanted a challenging role at a City bank
and felt that London Business Schools
Masters in Finance would equip me with
state-of-the-art financial modelling and
communication skills to achieve that. Its
the rubber stamp of quality for employers.
The year exceeded all expectations on all
fronts, through team-building assignments
and interaction with faculty, business and
fellow students. At events you socialise
with industry professionals, network and
identify mentors and career opportunities.

Ten years of working in the finance

industry had given me solid foundations,
but I wanted to set the platform for my
next big career move. London Business
Schools Masters in Finance programme
ticked all the boxes it was a targeted
programme letting me focus solely on
finance. It offered an excellent part-time
format and the strong reputation of the
programme ensured it would be a sound
long-term investment. I was promoted
from Analyst to Portfolio Manager as soon
as I completed the Masters in Finance, so
my decision was definitely the right one.
22

I tailored my
programme towards
quantitative finance
and investments. As
soon as I completed
my Masters in Finance
I was promoted from
Analyst to Portfolio
Manager, so my
decision was definitely
the right one.
Thais Batista (Brazilian) MiF2010,
Portfolio Manager, La Fayette
Investment Management

When you invest time, money and energy

in a programme like this, it makes sense to
maximise the opportunities available.
I was able to tailor the Schools flexible
curriculum to fulfil my individual needs.
The programme gave me the perfect
opportunity to develop a broader scope of
financial knowledge. Subjects like
Financial Engineering and Time Series
Analysis rounded out my general skills
toolkit, and electives gave me the chance
to delve into specific aspects of finance
and really pushed me academically.
I angled the programme towards
quantitative finance and investments
and learned a lot from the superb faculty.
I have a generalist approach to investment
strategy and now feel I have a sound base
across the subject and an insight into
different areas that I can develop. The
Masters in Finance gave me the tools and
vocabulary I needed to feel comfortable
in every field of finance; in effect, I have a
pass code now, a panoramic view that
will help propel me to more senior levels
as I move forward in my career.
Three years on from the programme the
benefits of the class network are evident,
currently on an informal, social basis. And
going forward, the contacts I have within
the industry will be invaluable.

The Career Service team and Finance

Club were full of insights on CV
development and have direct contacts
with potential employers. Ive been at
Rothschild for two years and have the
skill set to assess a business model at the
highest level and present my ideas to the
most senior bankers. And I continue to be
involved with the School as an alumnus.

The
programme
gave me the
foundation to
perform and
secured me my
dream job.
Kunal Sharma (Indian) MiF2011,
Investment Manager, Aloe Private Equity
Id worked as a consultant for five years and
had a good understanding of management
practice, but I lacked core financial
knowledge. Id been in the UK for a year
and was enjoying my job so opted for the
part-time programme, which allowed me to
maintain a work/life balance and reduce my
personal contribution towards tuition fees. I
lived a stones throw from the School, so
took part in many of the club activities.
The programme gave me a strong
foundation to perform financially and
equipped me with the commercial
perspective too. It helped me get my dream
job as part of the Internal M&A and Strategy
Team with ICF at Aloe Private Equity.

I have accessed
alumni expertise to
refine our processes
as well as highly skilled
student volunteers.

Ive always been

passionate about
international
relations and
development.
While employed
as an accountant,
I acted as an
election observer
for the EU in
Ukraine and DR Congo. I eventually
joined Charlemagne Capital, an emerging
markets hedge fund, focused on Eastern
Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
I set up Grow Movement a year before
starting my Masters in Finance. Its a notfor-profit organisation harnessing business
to end poverty and conflict in the worlds
poorest communities, including Malawi,
Uganda and Rwanda. We provide remote
consulting to small and medium-sized
businesses and need remote volunteers,
funding, organisational capacity and
entrepreneurs. I had gaps in my business
knowledge so I jumped at the opportunity
to study at London Business School.
The rigorous education on the
programme fitted well with my position
at the hedge fund and my long-term
objectives. Courses like Strategy helped
me determine how to position Grow
Movement, while Global Capital Markets
and Currencies gave me a high-level
economic overview that led to work
experience within a development bank,
building networks and credibility.
At a London Business School TEDx talk,
I was able to market Grow Movement and
Im sure this contributed to us receiving a
government grant to help 38,000 people
soon afterwards. I have accessed alumni
expertise and via the student and alumni
network, Ive sourced highly skilled
volunteers with diverse areas of expertise.
The London Business School experience
has contributed hugely to our success.
