What a Goodly Thing

Objective: Students will be able to sing the entirety of What a Goodly Thing using
handsign solfege.

Materials: Solfege chart, piano, green solfege cards

Introduction:
Review solfege major scale with handsigns
Teach minor scale minor sounds different just like in Pass the Pumpkin

New Song:
Teach in the air, phrase by phrase in solfege Students listen first 3X
Place cards on the floor, read from cards with handsigns
o Listen to me sing What a Goodly Thing on the words, and we will
learn this piece on text next time

Objective: Students will be able to sing What a Goodly Thing on text.

Materials: Solfege chart, piano, green solfege cards

Review:
Review major scale with solfege
Review minor scale with solfege
o What does minor sound like?
Song:
What a Goodly Thing in the air using handsigns first
Review solfege on green cards Students sing while teacher points
Teach text phrase by phrase

What a Goodly Thing

Objective: Students will be able to sing the handsign solfege and the text of What a
Goodly Thing memorized.

Materials: Piano, green solfege cards, What a Goodly Thing sheet music, interactive
whiteboard

Review:
Handsign solfege with green cards Teacher points, students sing
One by one, take green cards away students try to memorize (keep cards in
your mind)
Practice solfege with student leaders who feel like they have it No cards

Song:
Sheet music on whiteboard students practice looking at the words; cover
up words phrase by phrase with teacher leader (same process as cards)
Students sing entire piece on text memorized
Then students sing solfege with handsigns first, and text right after



4th Grade Lesson Cycle 22
What a Goodly Thing

Objective: Students will be able to sing What a Goodly Thing on text in a three-part
round.

Review:
Handsigns with cards once then memorized
Sing on text with music on whiteboard once then memorized

Round:
Teacher sings first, then whole class
o Whole class sings first, then teacher
o Split into two groups, practice both ways
o Then split class into 3 groups teacher conducting and cueing
entrances
Do in concert order
o Solfege with handsigns
o Whole class on words
o Then in round 3-pt
