Integration of Technology in Teaching English in My
School
Background of school
My school is a rural school that falls under the category of Sekolah
Kurang Murid or SKM. The school: Sekolah Kebangsaan Periang
consists of 32 pupils, 14 teachers and 7 workers including the
security

guard.

Currently,

there

are

two

English

teachers.

Technology wise my school have been equipped with a computer

laboratory with wifi and LAN connections. The provider of the
internet is YES from YTL Corporation. The lab is a network of 12
computers and a printer. However the rest of the school can connect
to the internet via wifi connection available throughout the school
area.
All the teachers in the school can be considered to be tech
savvies since they can use and operate the technologies at a very
productive level. The facilities and equipment have been utilised to
its fullest. The teachers uses the equipment to produce and use
printed materials, learning aid, audio visual materials and some
materials produced using generic software such as the Powerpoints
and Words. The school also have been provided with CALL software
which include the standalone and software accessible via the
internet.
Types of Technology used
At my school, the teachers use various kinds of technologies.
The most common are flash cards, worksheets and posters made
using the generic software. These materials were developed by
themselves to suit the abilities of the students. The audio clips and

EEC 412

the video clips are usually downloaded from the internet sources.
Materials are carefully selected before they can be introduced into
the classroom. Other than that, the teachers also uses CALL
software usually developed and supplied by the Bahagian Teknologi
Pendidikan (BTPN).

MBMMBI softwares from BTP

The teachers also occasionally use internet based software to
supplement the teaching materials. The most common websites are:

1. http://www.galacticphonics.com (for phonics games)

EEC 412

2. http://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com (for phonics lesson)

3. http://www.sparklebox.co.uk

(for

literacy

materials

and

templates).
These materials are frequently used in the classroom. The
materials are used almost every day in the classroom. Even in the
textbook, teachers are suggested to produce materials to be used
as teaching aids or learning materials for the students. However,
the most frequent technologies used in the classroom are the flash
cards, posters and video clips.
Reasons for Using the Technology
According to an English teacher in SK Periang, Pn Sharlianita
bt Ahmad Shariffudin, she was not afraid to use the technology in
the classroom. At first, it was overwhelming and scary for her to
master this new technology. Once she mastered it, technology
proves to be very helpful and interesting to use in the classroom.
Technology also saves time and energy. Rather than having to
use markers and coloured pencils to make materials for classroom
use, teachers can have more vibrant and satisfying results using the
computer and printer. There are also abundance clipart and
templates to make teachers life easier. The existence of blogs and
social platforms makes sharing and discussion of ideas between
teachers made possible and easier. If questions and problems

EEC 412

persist, it can be discussed on the facebook and the response is

almost immediate.
Technology also makes the lesson more interesting. In
encourages response from the students if the right stimuli is used.
The students also love the experience of using the computers
especially when the students come from poor or average income
families. Teachers also do not have to worry since; they can monitor
the students computer activities.
Teacher also can produce high quality materials that can last
longer. Printed and laminated materials can last longer and if stored
properly can be used for the year to come. Rather than handwriting
the materials, printer makes teachers jobs easier. Furthermore they
can save time and energy since the materials can be stored for later
use.
Technology

also

enables

first-hand

experience

for

the

students. They get to use and apply directly the skills that they
learned. It also enables them to learn about other cultures and
knowledge without having them to leave their home. They can learn
through videos and live streaming of radios and TV shows.
The quality and condition of materials
The materials made using the technology may have high
quality in content, but teachers still need to do some work manually
in order for the materials to be more durable and resistance to wear
and tear of students usage. Teachers also must be very selective in
the content of the materials. The content may not be suitable or out
of the prior knowledge of the students.
The materials produced also consumed refillables such as inks
and papers, so the teachers must make sure that the materials must
be durable and stored in a proper place. This is to make sure that
the teachers do not need to spend money on the same materials
every year and theyll be able to share it with other teachers as well.

EEC 412

The materials also must be recorded so that teachers can check the
inventories from time to time.
When using the computers in the lab, teachers also must be
very clear with the instructions so that students wont face any
major problems. Teachers also must monitor them when the
students are using the internet because internet materials are
massive and may not be suitable for kids.
Summary
It is a blessing, when the technology was developed. It makes
our life as teachers easier and our materials more vibrant in content
and looks. However, teachers must be very selective in order for the
technology to give impact and meanings to our students life. The
materials must be content related and suitable for the students to
use. It also must be interesting enough for the students to use it by
themselves as learning aid.
Teachers must think thoroughly and spend more time in
making the materials durable and last longer.
