1 Introduction

HEIDENHAIN recommends the following cables for data

transfer:
HEIDENHAIN data transfer cable Id. Nr. 274 545 01, 25-line
(delivered with the FE 401). If your PC has a g-pin RS-232-C
interface, you will need a 9/25-pin adapter (commercially
available).
A HEIDENHAIN RS-232-Cadapter cable (Id. Nr. 239 760) and
a RS-232-C adapter block (Id. Nr. 239 758 01 or
Id. Nr. 310 085 01) must be switched between the data
transfer cable and the control. These are usually already
installed by the machine tool builder in the machine pendant
or switch cabinet.

2 Sofhware Installation

2 Software

Installation
Switch on the PC without the HEIDENHAIN floppy disk in the
disk drive. After the test and switch-on routines your PC then
stands ready with the prompt
C:\>
Insert the HEIDENHAIN disk into drive A.
Set up a directory into which the delivered programs are to be
copied and switch to this directory.
Type and enter the command
COPY A:*.*

to copy the programs onto the hard disk.

If you wish to copy only one program, instead of I*. * enter
the name of the desired program (e.g. "TNC . EXE").
Remove the disk from the drive and store it carefully!
The software installation is now completed: the programs
TNC.EXE, TNCI 50.EXE. FDE.EXE and FE-EXEare stored on
the hard disk in the desired directory and can be started from
there.
The following chapters describe these programs in detail.

3 Data Transfer with TNC.EXq

3 Data Transfer with TNC.EXE

3.1 Preparing

the Controls
TNC 151/155

On the TNC 151/l 55 4/P the following machine parameters

must be entered to adjust the RS-232-C/V.24interface:
MP 71: 515
MP 218: 17736 (17732 for IS0 programs)
MP 219: 16712 (16708 for IS0 programs)
MP 220: 279
MP 221: 5382
MP 222: 168
MP 223: 1
MP 224: 4
The baud rate must be set to 9600 baud.
For the TNC 151/l 55 B/Q controls, select the RS-232-C/V.24
interface with the MOD key and set to FE operation (see also
the Users Manual of the control).
TNC 355 and TNC 350

Same as for TNC 155 B/Q

TNC 12413 1O/407/41 O/41 5/425/426/430

With these controls, select FE 2, FE 1 or FE operation via the

corresponding soft-key functions (see the corresponding
Users Manual). The baud rate of the control must match that
of the PC. After all settings have been properly made,
connect the PC and TNC with the cable (see Chapter 8).
The TNC can be connected to the COMI or COM2 serial
interface of the PC, or to another serial interface - COMX.

3 Data Transfer
3.2 Starting

with TNCEXE

the Program
You must establish the connection with the TNC before you
begin the program. Then to start the program enter the
following command:

TNC J
The following main menu appears (on condition that the TNC
connection has been established properly and the correct
interface has been selected):

Important information such as the current path, the interface

configuration and whether data transfer is in progress is
displayed in addition to the menu items.

3 Data Transfer with TNC.EXE

If transfer is not possible (incorrect interface, no connection to

control), this will be recognized by the software and one of the
following error messages will possibly be output:

Ext. in-/output not ready, if the cable connection is not

correct, or if an incorrect interface has been selected.
Corn1 is probably connected to a mouse
if a mouse or other unit is already connected to the selected
interface.
Once you have acknowledged the error message with J, the
menu for configuring the software will be displayed for you to
select the correct interface or make other settings.

3.3 Configuration

The possible settings are described in the following.

Path

The path name indicates the directory on the network, hard

disk or floppy disk that is accessible for the computer. This is
the directory that stores the files transferred to or from the
control.
Path entry

There are two ways to enter the path name:

Either move the cursor to the desired position in a tree
showing the directory structure of the selected drive, or type in
the path name by hand. You must always enter a complete
path name.
Display

Defines whether the data blocks should be shown on screen

during a transmission (Active).
Define COMX

If your PC has an interface card with a variable setting, you can

define an interface here (e.g. COM3 or COM41.
You will need to enter the following:
Port address; this must be smaller than 400H,
Hardware interrupt (IRQ..); may not be used otherwise,
Clock frequency of the UART component. When making your
entries, refer to the entries in the description of the interface
card.
COMI-COMZ-COMX

Here you can select which serial interface you want to use COMI, COM 2 or COMX (if the operating system allows this
choice).

10

3 Data Transfer with TNC.EXE

Data bits
Sets data transmission to 7 or 8 data bits. Normally, data is
transmitted in 7 bits. The 8-bit setting is provided for the
TNC 426/430 when comment texts with special characters
requiring 8 bits are to be transmitted.
Baud rate
The baud rate can be set to:
2400,4800,9600,19 200,38 400,57 600,115 200
The baud rates of the control and the data transmission
software must match.
Note: Many older computers cannot transmit faster than 9600
bauds.
Timeout
With the timeout you can define how long a transmission line
is kept open if no data is being received from the PC. The
timeout is only valid if data transfer from the control to the PC
has been started.
Timeout between two blocks
This is the timeout set for the receipt of full blocks (e.g. NC
blocks). The time can be from 10 to 60 seconds. A good
experimental value is 30 seconds.
Timeout between one block
This is the timeout set for the receipt of the next character
within a block. 2 seconds can serve as experimental value.
Stopwatch
Indicates how long the transmission or reception of a file lasts.
The stopwatch can be switched on and off.
Screen image
Defines whether the PC monitor is color or monochrome.
Name verification
Enables and disables name verification for HEIDENHAIN or
IS0 part programs. If the name verification is active an error
message will appear if the DOS name does not match the
program name given in the first line of text.

3 Data Transfer with TNC.EXE

Printer
If a printer is connected, you must configure it in the program
to be able to print. Normally, a printer is connected to the LPTI
parallel interface. If your printer is connected to another
interface, you must indicate so here by entering the name of
the interface in the input window.
You can also determine that the Form Feed control character
be output to transport the paper in the printer. The paper will
then be transported after every 60 lines.
Move the cursor to the desired configuration item. The J key
enables and disables several functions, while on other items it
calls a list of selectable values in the entry window at the
bottom. To choose the desired value, you again move the
cursor and press the J key. The number of data bits and the
name of the printer interface must be typed in.
After you have configured the program your PC will be ready to
transmit and receive programs to and from the control.
Program transfer
Data transfer must be started at the control (see Users
Manual of the control).
If no data is being transferred the PC will display the message
"Data transfer

inactive"

If data transfer is in progress, it displays the message:

"Blockwise

transfer

from TNC to PC"

"Blockwise

transfer

from PC to TNC"

or

If the display configuration option is enabled, the transmitted

blocks will be displayed. If the FE1 mode is set on the control,
the table of contents of the control will also be displayed on
the PC screen after a data transfer.

If the TNC 150 is transferring data to the PC, the data is bufferstored in a temporary file (with a random name). Then the
program checks whether the data consists of NC files, a
machine parameter list, a PLC program or a cross reference list
for the PLC program. You can then give machine parameter
lists, PLC programs and cross reference lists six-character
names. A special character will precede and follow the name.
The file name extension for PLC programs is .PNC, for cross
reference lists is .QNC and for machine parameter lists is
.MNC.
If the TNC 150 requests files (see the Users Manual of the
control), a file selection menu will be displayed. From here you
use the cursor to select the same file as was entered in the

You can also copy from the floppy disk to the hard disk.
Note: Since not all disk drives receive identical support from
the BIOS or the operating system, FE. EXE might not run on
some PCs. If this happens to you, use the program FDE. EXE
or TNC . EXE instead.
The program provides the required information in windows. It
is operated by function keys and cursor keys. The input always
applies to the active window, which is shown in a bright frame.

6 Program for Formatting

Disks in FE Format

(FE.EXE)

Every time you change to the FE window, the program checks

whether the disk was changed. If it was, the directory of the
new 3.5 disk is read and displayed. Whenever you change a
disk, the FE window must be re-selected to show its directory.
The flags mean:
P write protected
w not write protected
In addition to the FE and DOS windows, an information, dialog,
or error window also appears, depending on the selected
function.
An information window does not require any input from the
user. In a dialog window, the permitted input is listed. Every
entry can be erased with the BACKSPACE key and overwritten
with a new entry. You must always acknowledge an error with
the J key.
6.3 Formatting

an FE Floppy Disk
If you are in the FE window (cursor t), you can format the
inserted 3.5 disk in FE 401 format with the F4 key. The new
disk name is formed with FE-401 v and an arbitrary four-digit
disk identification. The progress of formatting is shown in a
window. A disk can also be formatted in the FE 401 floppy disk
unit.

6.4 Select, Deselect

To select a file, mark it with the cursor key and press F5. Use
F6 to revoke the selection.
If you select a directory in the DOS window, it becomes the
current directory and its contents are displayed. The
expression . refers to the current directory, and ..I is its
parent directory. You can move through all branches of the
tree by selecting the desired directory level.

6.5 Copying

for Formatting

Disks in FE Format

(FE.EXE)

NC Files
All selected files of one window can be copied to the data
medium in the other window. The target window is then
refreshed. The DOS directory shows only files with a name
extension consisting of one character plus NC.
During copying, the DOS name is changed as follows:
XXXXXXXX.HNC -> XXXXXXXX.H
The name is change conversely in the other copying direction.
The file size is different for the same files, because the DOS
file has two characters per line feed and the corresponding FE
file has only one character.
If a file is already present in the target window, the program
will indicated this.

6.6 Deleting

a File
All selected files can be deleted with F3. This applies to files
both in the DOS and in the FE windows.

7 Structure

of DOS File Names for NC Files

7 Structure

of DOS File Names for NC Files

NC programs transferred from the control to the PC are stored
there under a certain DOS name. This DOS name consists of
an NC program name with a maximum of 8 digits and a certain
3-digit extension.
In the TNC 150/l 55/355/246/360 these program names always
consist of numbers (0 .. . 9). In the TNC 407/415 they can also
contain letters (A ... Z).
Example:
NC program name:

DOS name:

12345678
TEST
ARC12
CUBE7
415 (PLC Program)
407 (Machine parameter list)

12345678.HNC
TESTl.HNC
ARC12.HNC
CUBE7.DNC
415.PNC
407.MNc

The 3-digit extension is allocated automatically

transfer.
