Alfred, NY, April 2010--Alfred State College Center for
Organic and Sustainable Agriculture will host a public display
of the proposed plans for the renovation of the college farm.
The plans will feature designs for the new dairy barn that will
accommodate both organic and non-organic cows. Pasture
management, renovation of existing buildings, and other
agricultural enterprises on the campus will also be subjects for
discussion. Farmers, members of the community, and all other
stakeholders are invited to participate and give their feedback
on the plans. The plans will be on display in the former flower
shop and future site of the Center for Organic and Sustainable

The ASC Technology Challenge returns for its second year,
hosting 11 teams also from regional high schools. The
competition provides an opportunity for high school
sophomores, juniors, and seniors to showcase their technology
and business skills, and includes two facets: (1) the design and
construction of a robot and (2) the production of a business
plan for marketing the robot. Last year’s robots competed in a
basketball challenge and an elevation game (where
Styrofoam® bricks were stacked by the students’ robot
creations). A third game will be added to the contest this year.
Alfred State College robotics students will help referee the
games while competitors’ business plans will be judged by
Alfred State College senior Business Department students.

“safety’s sake.” Two of
the most valuable
lessons, changing a tire
and hooking up jumper
cables are best learned
before an emergency
arises, according to the
Car Care Council.
The process of
boosting a battery is
especially important in
cold weather. Jumper
cables or cables on a
portable battery booster
should be connected
properly to avoid sparks,
which can cause an
explosion of the
hydrogen gas emitting
from a battery. Beyond
this, an incorrect hook up

You may not know what end of a wrench to hold, but
anybody can get a grip on these helpful car care tips.
Get the soap.- Perhaps the simplest thing to do to
take care of your car is to wash it on a regular basis.
Washing your car once a week can help keep at bay
the bugs, tar and other debris that can build up over
time. Given a foothold, these things can become nearly
impossible to clean off. If you can’t manage a once-a-
week wash, try for once a month. If you can’t manage
once a month and you have kids, hire ‘em out.
Check the oil. Stat!- Your car’s oil is like its blood. It
needs to be checked regularly. Check your owner’s
manual for the type of oil your car uses and where the
oil dipstick under the hood is located. At least once a
month, check your oil level. Top it off if necessary. All
you need is the oil, a funnel and some paper towels to
clean up any mess.
And while you’re checking the oil...Your car has
other fluids that need to be checked every so often as
well. These include automatic transmission fluid,
coolant (anti-freeze), brake fluid, differential oil and
power steering fluid. Consult your owner’s manual for
the location of these fluid reservoirs. Check their levels
periodically, top them off when necessary and have
them changed when your manual indicates.
Hold the grease- You’re keeping the outside of your
car looking sharp with regular washings, but how about
under the hood? Head to your local auto parts store
and check out the variety of degreasers available.
Follow the directions and watch your engine sparkle.
An added benefit to having a clean engine is it makes it
easier to locate any trouble spots (e.g., leaks).

shield may get dirty from rain or snowstorms or our

tak-ing making more of the maintenance and repair
de-cisions - traditionally made by the male
population.
A recent study by the Automotive Aftermarket
Industry Association showed that nearly 9 out of 10
female motorists are somewhat involved in the
decision-making process for their householdís
vehicle maintenance and repair. Some industry
experts say that close to 80 percent of the drivers
taking cars in for service and repair are women.
“With more and more women involved in car
care, itís important that they are aware of various
vehicle safety features,” said Steve Zweig, director
PPG Glass Alliance Program, including PPG
PROSTARS, an alliance of independent and
professional auto glass technicians, “such as the
windshield.”
The windshield is a critical part of the vehicle’s
safety system. In the event of an accident, it enables
to vehicleís airbags to properly function. Comprised
of two pieces of glass and bonded together by a
vinyl inter-layer. When broken, the glass will
generally adhere to the plastic lining. This type of
glass in typically referred to as laminated.
“As an integral part of the vehicle structure,
proper repair or replacement of the windshield by an
experienced and qualified technician is extremely
important,” said Zweig. “Whether it’s a repair or a
replacement, the windshield is comprised of various
components and parts, so itís critical that proper pro-
ducts and procedures are used and followed.”
Zweig advises all car owners to make sure they
select or request an auto glass technician who is
experienced and qualified; one that follows the
proper installation steps (see side bar) before,
during and after any windshield work has been
performed.

There are a variety of other situations that can
distract motorists, whether they’re en route to their
vacation destination, or simply driving across town.
Many of these can be addressed with little or no
money. Examples include:
• Things hanging from the rear view mirror - Take
them down. They can obstruct vision out of
both the front and rear windows.
• A damaged rear view mirror - Get it repaired.
Many of your driving decisions are only as
good as the view from your mirrors.
• Worn windshield wiper blades - Replace them.
Smeared glass and chattering blades can be
unnerving. Blades are inexpensive and you
can probably do the installation yourself.
• Torn or frayed car mats - Get new ones. The old
mats can catch a heel, diverting your
attention and/or interfering with the motion of
your foot on the accelerator or brake.
• Droopy headliner - Purchase a kit to reattach it
or buy a new one. Material draping down in

window.
• Keeping a pet in its place away from the driver.

and which ones need professional attention, says
the Car Care Council. Take care of them as soon as
