renewed interest in Vitamin D. Its role
in skeletal health has long been rec-

that this vitamin plays an ever-present
role in the function of essentially all
major organ systems. There is evi-

of a vitamin D deficiency state may
also vary across the lifespan. This is
particularly apparent for women. In
premenopausal women, the primary

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

by Dr. Kimberlee Goode, Women’s Physicians Associates

HPV is the cause of more than 70% of cervical can-

cers and over 90% of genital warts in the U.S. HPV is
spread by direct skin-to-skin sexual contact involv-
ing the genital area.
HPV infection is extremely common. Three out of
every four men and women who have been sexu-
ally active will have an HPV infection in their
lifetime. Most HPV infections can be cleared by the
immune system and go away without treatment.
Decreasing risk of HPV infection and cervical can-
cer includes abstinence from sexual contact,
limiting number of sexual partners, cessation of
smoking, using condoms, regular Pap smears and
vaccination.
Women can be tested for HPV, cervical cancer and
abnormal cervical cells through a Pap smear. A Pap
smear can usually detect HPV infection and abnor-
mal cervical cells before a cancer develops. A
woman should receive a Pap smear annually begin-
ning at age 21.

STEP 1 Mask ceilings, baseboards, and trim with painter’s tape. Paint the wall with your desired
basecoat color and allow to dry completely (minimum 4 hours or overnight). This will be the color
that shows through the cracks. TIP: Pour glaze mixture into a paint tray or plastic liner for easier dipping.
STEP 2 With a brush or roller, apply an even coat of Illusions® Faux Finish Crackle Medium. Allow to
dry until it’s no longer tacky — about two to four hours. (Don’t wait longer than 4 hours before
applying topcoat.)
STEP 3 Apply a topcoat of a second color, being careful to paint in one direction. Do not overlap
your strokes, as this will cause the paint to lift off. Within minutes, the topcoat will begin to crack,
exposing random cracks of the basecoat color beneath. TIP: Roll on a thin topcoat for small, fine
cracks. For more pronounced cracking, apply a heavier topcoat with a brush.
OPTIONAL TECHNIQUE
Don’t stop with your walls. Crackle also works well on furniture, frames, accent pieces and trim.
After allowing the topcoat to dry at least 72 hours, you may want to protect these items with a coat
of WoodClassics® Oil Polyurethane or Fastdry Oil Varnish. Keep in mind that they will slightly alter
the color.

Options in Caregiving
by Mary Katherine Bagnal, MSW, CMC, CGC

Although there are a variety of options available when choosing a non-medical home care company,
there are also a variety of important factors to consider as well. Allowing someone new into your
home may raise a few questions such as who will this person be and how do you determine they are
qualified and safe to have in your home for your purpose. Think of the questions you would want to
ask that person if they were in your home to care for yourself or a loved one. The importance of hav-
ing someone you feel comfortable around and can trust, not only in your home but with your loved
one, is top priority. Not only does this person need to be trained and experienced in providing home
care services, this individual needs to be able to adjust to others’ schedules, routines, specific needs
and overall activities of daily living.
