Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., speaks before a crowd around 4,500 during
a campaign rally at the University of Nevada, Reno, on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
Though Sanders began his campaign in anonymity, he has quickly risen
to be the only viable challenge to Democratic favorite Hillary Clinton in
the 2016 presidential race.

Paul Ryan takes up speakers
gavel after a month of turmoil in
the House
Paul Ryan, R-Wis., officially took
up the mantle of speaker of the
house on Thursday, succeeding
Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio. Ryans
promotion has capped a tumultuous month in the House of Representatives that saw a multitude of
increasing divisions among House
Republicans.
Boehner had tendered his resignation at the beginning of October
and had expected to find his successor in Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. In an unexpected
turn of events, however, McCarthy
withdrew from the speakers race
under intense pressure from the
right-wing House Freedom Caucus.
The Freedom Caucus was one of
the strongest voices calling for
Boehners exit since his election in
2010.
Once McCarthy took himself out
of the race, calls for Ryan to take the
job as a unifying figure intensified.
Ryan had, for most of October,
been resolute in his will not to be
speaker, saying multiple times that
he was not the man for the job. Even
so, Ryan eventually bowed to the
pressure.
Ryan was quick to distance
himself from Boehner and the
Republican establishment, saying it
was time to [wipe] the slate clean.

One of the reasons why we
want to continue to look at

that the out-of-state students
who come on these kind of discounts retain at a greater rate,
Maples said. They graduate at
a greater rate and they also add

Maples stated that there is
one important issue to consider due to the large number of

student population the cost of
instruction becomes more difficult to cover for the university.
He says that including another

With the new addition, the

that the students who still meet
the old standards will make

APPOINTMENTS
Two new senators appointed
for the College of Engineering and Division of Health
Sciences
The senate is back at max capacity for the first time since the
end of September, when three of
the 22 sitting senators resigned.
Sam Bruketta of the College of
Engineering and Elizabeth Pearson of the Division of Health
Sciences were each appointed to
fill the last two open seats.
The race for the open engineering seat, left by former Sen.
Anthony Ramirez, was a heated
one. Six applicants were considered for the job, though only
five showed up for the actual
nomination process.
The whole process ended up
taking nearly an hour as each
candidate was given 3 minutes
to present and 5 minutes to be
grilled by the senate proper.
The questions included everything from how the candidates
planned on accomplishing
certain legislative goals to how
well each candidate knew the
Statutes of the Associated Students (ASUNs big book of rules
and legislation).
Bruketta received nine of 15
votes, giving him the ultimate
victory. Four senators abstained
and one was absent.
Elizabeth Pearson was the one
and only candidate who applied
for the open DHS seat. Nonetheless, sitting senators were
pleased with her presentation,
experience and commitment.
The two senators will sit for
their first full senate meeting
this Wednesday.

Unique convention
gives fans sense
of community
By Samantha Johnson
apanese animation, or
anime, has been bringing
fans around the world
joy since the early 90s.
Otaku culture was built
from anime, and events
like Comic Con were
created as an outlet for
the massive fandom it has
accumulated. From Friday,
Oct. 30, to Nov. 1, the Sierra
Nevada Anime Fans Unite
Convention, or SNAFU Con, was where
otakus and gamers from Reno could
enjoy what they love the most.
SNAFU held its first convention in
2010, when the Anime and Manga Society
from the University of Nevada, Reno,
used to hold Halloween parties called
Shadows. Until this year, the event had
been held at the Grand Sierra Resort and
Casino, but was forced to move to a different venue after new policies would cut
the conventions space in half, according
to the SNAFU Con website. It was moved
to John Ascuagas Nugget in Sparks and
while fans had anxiety about the change,
the convention was still a success.
SNAFU Con offers a unique opportunity
for attendees, with vendors, artist booths,
gaming tournaments and more. Special
guests like voice actors Christopher Escalante, Danielle McRae and Renos local
voice actor, Kiba Walker, were there to talk
to fans as well as give advice to amateur
voice actors. Author Missy Ames, who
wrote the medieval fantasy series Tir
Athair was also present, along with Team
Seven Cosplay and other representatives
from the video game and science fiction
fields.
None of the staff is paid for their work
and offer their time willingly, including
the official staff, although SNAFU Con is
not a nonprofit event. It is hosted by the
company Science LLC., which is owned
by the con chairs, Nathan Sindar and
Beta. All the proceeds go toward the
next years event, and according to staff
members Andrew Eveland and T. Costa,
SNAFU Con is growing quickly.
We really lived up to our name this
year, Costa said. The show must go on.
If somebody cant do it, somebody else
is going to pick up the slack because its
going to happen.
Costa is the head of press, public relations, marketing and karaoke at SNAFU
Con. She became an official staff member
by accident when she volunteered for the
technology team, along with several other
departments. Originally Costa was an
attendee for two years and started volunteering last year, but she became the head
of her own department when she helped
work with social media for SNAFU, along
with public outreach for the convention.
I kind of wind up doing everything,
Costa said. When you turn into high staff,
you end up giving your all for the con.

start up a conversation with an offer to buy a drink. This
ones on me! is always an appreciated
offer, whether its tea or tequila. But
remember, a drink is just a drink. It

Since Tony Sanchez was hired as head coach in December of 2014, UNLV
has tried to convince fans they arent just a basketball school, but that
they also have the potential to flaunt a competitive football team. Donald
Trump has been on a similar mission to convince voters he isnt just a
lavish casino owner, but also a legitimate presidential candidate.
Both UNLV and Trump have flashed moments of promise. UNLV took
the Fremont Cannon from its rivals on Oct. 3 and Trump has emerged as
the GOP frontrunner in recent polls. But can you really imagine a world
where Trump is the president of the United States and UNLV wins the
Mountain West? UNLV is good at two things: basketball (although
not lately) and reminding people how good its basketball team
was in the 90s. Trump is also good at two things: running casinos
(although hes filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy four times)
and wearing hairpieces.

CROSS COUNTRY
Senior Emily Myers logged the best
championships finish of her career,
leading the Nevada Cross Country team
in 13th place at the Mountain West
Championships on Friday morning.
The team finished seventh and Myers
earned second team honors with a time
of 23:33. Senior Erika Root placed 25th
with a time of 24:26 and sophomore
Marissa Suan took 34th with 24:58.
The team also beat UNLV to score

race featured two of the top-10 teams
in the country and several of the top
individuals, including the No. 1 runner in
Boise States Allie Ostrander.
WAS TERRY COLLINS DECISION TO LEAVE MATT HARVEY IN THE GAME A BAD CALL?
The New York Mets lost the series because Terry Collins left
Matt Harvey in the ninth inning. You have a 2-0 lead going into
the ninth and a well-rested bullpen waiting to head out there,
so what does Collins do? He leaves his starter that had above
100 pitches in the game. Remember when the Red Sox had the
lead against the Yankees in the 2003 ALCS and they left Pedro
Martinez in the game? A walk off homer from Aaron Boone
helped the Yankees win the pennant and the Red Sox went
home disappointed. The same happened here, with the Royals
tying and eventually winning in the ninth. Bad move, Collins.
VS
Neil Patrick
Healy
Jack
Rieger
Neil, dont be the guy that overreacts to every move the manager
makes. Terry Collins has more experience than any manager in
baseball, and his move to keep Harvey in the game was justified.
His closer, Jeurys Familia, had already blown two saves earlier
in the series against the Royals. Matt Harvey was pitching an
absolute gem and Collins felt he could finish the job. Of course
its looked at as a terrible decision now because it didnt work
out. The same goes for Pete Carrol not giving the ball to Lynch;
its foolish to question the guy who pulls the trigger when hes
owned the gun for as long as Collins has.

Chris Dick Blake sets your
fantasy lineup for week nine
STUD
RB Jeremy Hill: Jeremy Hill hasnt
panned out to what fantasy
owners had expected before the year
started. With Andy Dalton playing
out of his mind, the Bengals have
been extremely successful through
the air, rather than a good running
team that they are used to being.
However, I look for Hill to break out
in primetime Thursday night against
the Browns with a night that should
finally please owners.

Michael Crabtree
and rookie Amari

all year. However, an inconsistent
Carr seems to have success in
patterns. Week two and week three
of the season, he threw for 665 yards
and five TDs and then proceeded
to struggle on the road in Chicago
week four. After two consecutive
300-yard performances the last two
weeks, its time for Carr to come
back down to Earth.

WR Malcom Floyd: Malcom (not

with star Chargers receiver Keenan

expanded role against a poor Bears

NBA
DEONTE BURTON
Burton is still trying to progress at
the next level. He played overseas
last season for the ratiopharm Ulm
of the Basketball Bundesliga League
in Germany, but was limited by his
performance. In July 2015, he joined
the 76ers for the Utah Jazz Summer
League and played three games during the tournament. He also had the
opportunity of playing in the NBA
again after signing with the Suns
in August, but he didnt show up to
training camp and was waived on
October 6th. Burton still has room
for improvement and is projected to
play for the Bakersfield Jam in the DLeague in November. If he improves
in his weak areas (dribbling with confidence, shot selection and shooting
consistency), he could have another
opportunity to get on an NBA roster.
Theres a long way to go in the NBA
season with a chance for these players to get more game time minutes
and become difference makers for
their teams. There will be more to
know about how they are progressing whether they become starters,
out with injuries, go to another team,
be in free agency limbo or play for
another league.

them himself.
Grantland was Simmons brainchild; he hired
the staff, edited all content and most importantly,
established the websites spontaneous, openminded energy. You cant ax the ringleader and
expect the culture to remain healthy. As an anonymous member of the Grantland staff said, Bill is
Grantland.
Since Bills exit from ESPN in May, he signed a
contract with HBO Sports and has created his own
podcast, which operates as a vehicle for his spontaneous opinions about the sports world. And yes, he
has taken several shots at his former employer, both
verbally and tactically.
Last month, he managed to persuade four of
Grantlands top lead writers to come back to work
for him on an unannounced project. Besides those
four talented writers, dozens of other columnists,
producers, web designers and countless other
intricate members of the site have left for jobs with
different publications.
Finally, on Friday afternoon, after five months
of deterioration, ESPN announced they would be
shutting down Grantland for good, along with the
majority of the staffs 40 contributors, many of
whom found out about their termination on social
media.
Well, thats the first time Ive ever found out I
was laid off via Twitter, wrote Michael Baumann, a
former Grantland columnist.
The former ringleader himself chimed in via
Twitter as well.
I loved everyone I worked with at G and loved
what we built, Simmons tweeted. Watching good/
kind/talented people get treated so callously =
simply appalling.
ESPN is a $40 billion enterprise with an endless
assembly line of writers and resources. Grantlands
termination wont put a dent in their enormous
profit margin, and ESPN will utilize their resources
and attempt to find talented, young sports writers
to replace the creative void Grantland and Bill
Simmons left. But ESPN wont find another Bill
Simmons, just like they will never find another
Grantland.
