B. Find and Use a Pattern

Humans live in a world full of patterns: in art, music, nature design and human behavior. Patterns are
generally defined as repeated sequences of objects, actions, sounds or symbols. Patterns may also include
changes because they are not perfect. Recognizing and using patterns is a critical human thinking ability.
Without the ability to find and use patterns to organize their world, humans would live in a world of chaos.
Young children create patterns based on color with common manipulatives: pattern blocks, color tiles and
links. Commercial or teacher-made templates guide childrens pattern work from simple two-element patterns
to more complex patterns with three or four elements. Students match patterns, read color patterns and extend
patterns:

Red, blue, red, blue, red, blue,

Yellow, green, green, yellow, green, green
Blue, green, yellow, blue, green, red, blue, green, yellow
Other patterns can be found and made using children themselves. They can arrange themselves by type of
shoe, color of eyes, or positions:
Sandals, sneaker, sandal, sneaker,
Brown, blue, green, brown, blue, green,
Sit, stand, sit, stand, sit, stand,
Patterns are a foundation skill for thinking. Even numbers are those numbers that can be broken down into
pairs, giving a numerical sequence of 2, 4, 6, 8, . More complicated patterns can be found in the relationships
between numbers.
Increasing sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 9, 4, 16,
Decreasing sequence: 100, 90, 81, 73, 66, 60,

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13,
1, 8, 27, 64,
