The D.C. Historic Preservation Review
Board is considering a proposal to
designate a row house on Capitol Hill as
an historic landmark because it served
as the residence and headquarters of a
lesbian feminist separatist group called
the Furies Collective in the early 1970s.

LGBT history advocate Mark Meinke
led a 63-page nominating application
calling for historic landmark status for
the two-story brick house at 219 11th
St., S.E. last fall, starting a process that
Meinke hopes will lead to its eventual
designation as a National Historic
Landmark by the National Park Service.
Meinke led the application on
behalf of the Rainbow Heritage
Network, a national organization he cofounded one year ago to help secure
recognition and preservation of LGBT
historic sites throughout the country.

Touting Sanders as somebody whos
been for gay rights long, long ago since
he was mayor of Burlington, Vt., Briggs
said Sanders as a U.S. senator voted
against Dont Ask, Dont Tell in 1993
and he voted against the Defense of
Marriage Act in 1996. Briggs also cited

The document adds, Over the
course of the collectives and the
newspapers lives, the twelve women
explored and sought to resolve a
multitude of issues and examined their
personal experiences in the lines of

2 locals heading to NYC for new positions

This week, we congratulate two

members of our community who will
leave D.C. for exciting positions in New
York City.
First, congratulations are in order for
Fabrice Houdart who on Feb. 1 will take
up his position as Human Rights Ocer
at the United Nations High Commission
for Human Rights (OHCHR). Houdart
will work on issues related to sexual
orientation and gender identity.

Bank where he worked for 14 years and

LGBT Group, GLOBE. He also managed
a Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity,
and Development grant that examined
sexual minorities in development. The
grant, launched in 2012, provided a
rst estimate of the economic cost
of homophobia using India as a case
study. It also funded a short lm on the
interconnection between discrimination
based on sexual orientation and gender
identity and poverty. During his career
at the World Bank, Houdart has worked
in Africa, the Middle East and Central
Asia, rst as a human development

consultant and later as a strategy ocer.
He has authored analyses on Yemen, MARK ANTHONY DINGBAUM
Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Tunisia. He also provided contributions to the 2012
Gender World Development Report (WDR) and the 2011 Conict, Security, and
Development WDR. He holds a bachelors in economics and management from
Dauphine University in Paris and an MBA from American University in D.C.
Houdart is on the board of Alturi and the D.C. Rainbow Theater Company. He
has twin sons.
Congratulations are also in order for Mark Anthony Dingbaum who has
joined the Clinton Foundation as deputy director of communications, digital
engagement. After mobilizing online communities in advocacy, technology
and government, Dingbaum will now focus on digital communications and
enhancing awareness for the all of the foundations initiatives, which convene
businesses, governments, NGOs, and individuals to improve global health and
wellness, increase opportunity for girls and women, reduce childhood obesity,
create economic opportunity and growth and help communities address the
eects of climate change.
Prior to the Clinton Foundation, he served as a presidential appointee
in the Obama administration, supporting White House initiatives while
leading communications and digital activities at the U.S. Oce of Personnel
Management. Before joining the Obama administration, he managed campaign
and communications strategy at Change.org, empowering several of the most
popular petitions launched by the companys 125 million users, including
a 13-month national campaign that rallied nearly two million people to push
the Boy Scouts of America to end its policy banning gay youth. Dingbaum also
previously provided digital strategy and support to CREDO Mobile and the Gay
& Lesbian Victory Fund.

Mahl defeats incumbent
leader in shakeup

Sgt. Matthew Mahl, a gay 11-year veteran
at the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department
and a former supervisor of the departments
LGBT Liaison Unit, won election on Jan. 12 as
head of the police union.
Mahls election by a 2-to-1 margin as
chairman of the Labor Committee of the
Fraternal Order of Police the ocial
title of the union came as a surprise
to department observers, who view the
development as a clear decision by rank
and le members to oust their current
leader, Sgt. Delroy Burton.
Under
the
unions
governing
procedures, Mahl doesnt assume the
oce of chairman until April 1.
Mahl told the Washington Blade that
he and two other candidates who won
election to the position of vice chairman
and secretary ran on a platform calling
for an end to what they considered an
overly confrontational posture of the
unions current leaders toward D.C. Police
Chief Cathy Lanier and the administration
of Mayor Muriel Bowser.
He said he would try to schedule an
interview with the Blade soon to discuss
some of his and the other newly elected
union ocials plans for changes for the
union. Mahl elaborated on his concerns
about the current leaders in an interview
with the Washington Post last week.
The current union leaders are always
attacking the chief and the city, he told
the Post. The police union and the city
have the same goals. We want happy and
safe police ocers and we want happy
and safe communities. We cant keep
punching the police leaders in the face all
the time.
Burton couldnt immediately be

reached for comment. The police union
website, which regularly reports on
police-related news, includes a Dec. 14
announcement about the nomination
process for candidates running for
leadership positions. But the site makes
no mention of the results of the Jan. 12
union election.
Burton told the Post he believed the
vote to oust him was more about internal
union issues than his relationship with
Lanier and the mayor.
The union website says the FOP Labor
Committee represents approximately
3,600 members, which include sworn
ocers, detectives and sergeants. It
says the chairman serves as the unions
chief executive ocer and is one of ve
members of an Executive Committee,
which exercises general administrative
authority and is empowered to act on
behalf of the Labor Committee.
Lanier and the mayors oce released
statements saying they were pleased that
the newly elected union leadership wants
to work cooperatively with the chief and
the city government.
I love the idea that the chairman
is saying everything is not a ght, and
everything doesnt have to be adversarial,
the Post quoted Lanier as saying.
Mahl served as acting supervisor and
later as supervisor of the then-Gay and
Lesbian Liaison Unit from July 2012 to
March 2015, when Sgt. Jessica Hawkins,
the current supervisor, succeeded Mahl.
Since leaving the GLLU, Mahl has
worked as a patrol supervisor in the Sixth
Police District. He told the Blade on Jan. 15
that under a longstanding arrangement
between the union and the department,
the chairman of the union works full-time
as the union CEO and no longer performs
regular police duties.
Thats something Im going to miss,
he said.

Va. activists speak out against anti-LGBT bills

Advocates on Tuesday held a press
conference at the Virginia state Capitol
in Richmond to criticize a series of antiLGBT bills that members of the General
Assembly have introduced.
Robert Rigby, Jr., a spokesperson for
FCPS Pride, a group that represents LGBT
employees of the Fairfax County School
District, is among those who spoke at a
press conference that Equality Virginia
and the American Civil Liberties Union of
Virginia organized.
Rigby, who is a teacher at West
Potomac High School in the Alexandria
area of Fairfax County, specically
criticized state Del. Bob Marshall (R-Prince
William County)s House Bill 385 that
would prevent school boards and other
municipal entities from enacting antiLGBT discrimination measures.
Members of the Fairfax County School
Board over the last two years have added
sexual orientation and gender identity to
the districts anti-discrimination policy.
Rigby said HB 385 would dial this all back.
It would take away our sense of
security and inclusion, he said.
Rigby also criticized House Bill 663, a
measure introduced by state Del. Mark
Cole (R-Fredericksburg) that would require
people to use restrooms inside public
buildings and schools corresponding with
their anatomical sex.
Amy, who is the mother of a transgender
child, said during the press conference that
her daughter must use a separate restroom
at her school. Brian Rawclie, a trans man
who recently graduated from a public
school in Staord County also criticized HB
663 and a nearly identical measure that
Cole introduced earlier this month.
We dont want to infringe on anyones
privacy, said Rawclie. We just want our
own to be respected. Its a bathroom, not
a sex shop.
Phil Crosby, who is a member of the
Governors LGBT Tourism Task Force,
spoke against state Del. C. Todd Gilbert
(R-Shenandoah County)s House Bill
773 that would prohibit the state from
punishing ocials who refuse to perform
a same-sex marriage because of their
religious beliefs.
Crosby during the press conference
said HB 773 would adversely impact
Virginias economy. He noted that
Indianapolis had a major public relations
debacle on its hands last year after
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed his states
controversial religious freedom law.
No one would want to see that
House Bill 427, which would ban so-called

conversion therapy to minors in Virginia.
Family Foundation of Virginia President

released on Monday criticized legislation
prohibiting gender confusion therapy.

Richmond, said Crosby.
State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-Alexandria)
made a similar point.
The gay Alexandria Democrat during
the press conference noted tourism
generates $1.5 billion in state and local
tax revenue each year. Ebbin also pointed
out that Old Town Alexandria, Mount
Vernon, Reagan National Airport and
thousands of hotel rooms are located in
his district.
The legislation were discussing is a
direct aront to our welcoming climate,
both for businesses and tourists, he said.
State Del. Dave LaRock (R-Loudoun
County) earlier this month introduced
House Bill 431, which critics contend
would make it nearly impossible for trans
people to change the gender on their
birth certicates in the commonwealth.
State Sen. Charles Carrico (R-Galax) in
December proposed two measures that
would allow ocials to refuse to issue
marriage licenses to gay couples because
of their religious beliefs.
ACLU didnt ght for marriage equality
to allow Virginia to take steps backwards in
terms of protections for LGBT Virginians,
said ACLU of Virginia Executive Director
Claire Guthrie Gastaaga during the
press conference.

James Parrish noted there are several
pro-LGBT measures that have been
introduced in the 2016 General Assembly.
Newly elected gay state Del. Mark
Levine (D-Alexandria) has introduced a
bill that would ban discrimination based
on sexual orientation and gender identity
in employment, housing and public
accommodations.
Ebbin and state Sen. A. Donald
McEachin (D-Henrico County) and state
Del. Mamie Locke (D-Hampton) have
introduced resolutions that seek to repeal
Virginias constitutional amendment that
denes marriage as between a man and
a woman.
Ebbin and McEachin have also proposed
a bill that would codify into law Gov. Terry

LGBT contingent marches in D.C.s MLK parade
A small contingent of LGBT activists was among the thousands of local

residents to brave freezing temperatures on Monday to march in D.C.s 10th
annual Martin Luther King Day Peace Walk and Parade in Southeast Washington.
The six-member LGBT contingent marched behind the banner of the D.C.
Center for the LGBT Community, which organized the contingent.
It was a small but dedicated bunch of people, said David Butler, a D.C. public
school teacher and vice president of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, who
was among the contingent. We talked to a lot of people. We got the name out
there, he said. So just being there is helping to build bridges.
Also marching with the contingent was David Mariner, executive director of the
D.C. Center, two center volunteers, and a current and former student of Butlers
from the citys School Without Walls High School. Butler said the students were
members of the schools Gay-Straight Alliance group.
The annual King Day Parade and Peace Walk travels approximately one mile
along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, S.E. in the citys Congress Heights section.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson (D-At-Large),
and Council members LaRuby May (D-Ward 8), Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7), and
Vincent Orange (D-At-Large) were among the citys public ocials participating
in the parade.
Bowser and the Council members spent part of the day watching the parade
from a reviewing stand located near the end of the parade route.
It makes me feel good to be here celebrating the life of Martin Luther King Jr.,
Bowser told WUSA-TV. He made the ultimate sacrice.
Butler said the D.C. Centers LGBT contingent was recognized by one of the
announcers at the reviewing stand as the contingent passed the stand, where TV
news cameras, city ocials, and parade organizers were standing.
I know people in the grand stand were saying it was important to make sure
that everyone in the community is accepted, Butler said. So when we were
passing by the guy who was making the announcements he made a point of
saying how important it was that we were participating.
Butler said Mariner recognized numerous other LGBT people, includingsome
who work for the mayors oce, who participated in the parade in separate
contingents.

Documenting trans acceptance in religion

WASHINGTON The Center for American Progress on Jan. 19 released a
report about the inclusion of transgender people in religious denominations.
Retired New Hampshire Bishop V. Gene Robinson wrote the report that
examines the way that Jewish and Christian traditions have become more
inclusive of trans people. The gay Episcopalian also details his personal
experience with the issue.
I have been personally aected by many transgender faithful, said Robinson

and religion, people of faith cannot hope to build the houses of worship and

Montana guv signs LGBT executive order

HELENA, Mont. Montana Gov. Steve Bullock on Jan. 18 signed an executive
order that bans discrimination against state employees based on sexual
orientation and gender identity.
The Helena Independent Standard reported that Bullock, a Democrat, in a
statement referenced Martin Luther King, Jr.
I am honored to stand up for all Montanans to ensure that no one is denied
full and equal participation in our states workforce based on discrimination and
intolerance, said Bullock.
Bullocks executive order also applies to state contractors and subcontractors.
Governor Bullock has taken a bold step to expand equality and fairness for
all, said Human Rights Campaign President Chad Grin in a statement. We
commend him for doing everything in his administrative power to ght for the
rights of LGBT Montanans, and hope his actions encourage other government
ocials to make safeguarding protections for all residents and visitors a priority.
CenterLink CEO to step down

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. CenterLink on Jan. 19 announced longtime CEO
Terry Stone will leave the organization once his contract ends in 2017.
We are grateful for Terrys dedicated leadership at CenterLink over so many
years, said Chris Bartlett, co-chair of the CenterLink board of directors, in a
statement.
CenterLink was based in Washington in 2006 when Stone became its CEO.
Forty-ve LGBT community centers were aliated with CenterLink at the time.
That number has grown to more than 170 in the U.S. and around the world.
He grew the organization to fully represent the great diversity of LGBT centers
across the nation, said Bartlett. He made himself available both to centers
and their leadership so that LGBT centers and the communities they serve are
stronger as a result of his vision and commitment.

The National LGBTQ Task Force on
Tuesday announced it has reversed its
decision to cancel a reception at its annual
conference that was to have featured two
advocates from Israel.
Having taken in a range of information
and seeing what has happened over the
last couple of days, I have decided to
reverse our decision to cancel the Beyond
the Bridge reception, said National
LGBTQ Task Force Executive Director Rea
Carey in a statement.
A Wider Bridge, an organization that
describes its mission as building LGBTQ
connections with Israel, sponsored the
reception that was scheduled to take
place on Friday at the Creating Change
Conference in Chicago. Sarah Kala-Meir
and Tom Canning of Jerusalem Open
House for Pride and Tolerance had been
scheduled to speak at the gathering.
The National LGBTQ Task Force
cancelled the reception amid criticism
from Dean Spade, founder of the Sylvia
Rivera Law Project, and others who
accused A Wider Bridge of promoting
Israels LGBT rights record in an attempt
to deect attention away from its
treatment of the Palestinians.
The decision to cancel the reception
sparked outrage among LGBT rights
advocates in Israel and in the U.S.
In reversing the decision today, we
want to make it quite clear that the
Creating Change Conference will always
be a safe space for inclusion and dialogue
for people with often widely dierent
views, said Carey in her statement. It
was not at all our intention to censor
representatives of the Jerusalem Open
House or A Wider Bridge at Creating
Change and I apologize that our actions

left people feeling silenced.
A Wider Bridge in a statement thanked
Carey and the National LGBTQ Task Force
for reversing their decision.
We look forward to bringing our
important work, and the work of Jerusalem
Open House, to Creating Change in
Chicago, said A Wider Bridge. Our goal is
to always engage in constructive dialogue
that will further our cause, and now we
can continue our important work for our
worldwide community.
Kala-Meir, who is the executive director
of the Jerusalem Open House for Pride
and Tolerance, in a statement described
the National LGBTQ Task Forces apology
as sincere.
As a home for all LGBTQ Jerusalemites,
it is only natural that we nd among us
people from diverse backgrounds, political
aliations, ethnicity and religions, she
said. While recognizing the sensitivities
and complexities of working within a
conict situation, we try to focus on our
commonality rather than our dierences,
and to serve everyone regardless.
Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan
A. Greenblatt also welcomed the decision
to allow the reception to take place at the
conference.
We are very pleased that the Task
Force has reversed course and taken
responsibility for their deeply misguided
decision to cancel this reception, he said.
Spade expressed disappointment.
This indicates that there is a lot of work still
to do to build understanding and discernment
within the Task Force about how Israel
advocacy organizations use pinkwashing,
Spade told the Washington Blade.
The reception will take place less than
ve months after Yishai Schlissel, an
Orthodox Jewish man, stabbed a 16-yearold girl to death and injured ve others
during an attack on a Jerusalem Pride
march that Jerusalem Open House for
Pride and Tolerance organized.

Griffin articulates vision for future of LGBT movement

Chad Grin has a lot on his plate with

new challenges facing the LGBT community
in 2016, and he doesnt shy away from
expressing an opinion on a multitude of
recent LGBT news, such as controversy
over Caitlyn Jenner, expectations for lifting
the transgender military ban and the
Trans-Pacic Partnership.
The president of the Human Rights
Campaign made the comments earlier
this month with the Washington Blade
during a 45-minute interview in his oce,
where he said 2016 would be a pivotal
year for LGBT rights.
Within the Obama administration,
one major anticipated action on
LGBT rights this year is the end to the
medical regulation prohibiting openly
transgender service in the U.S. military.
Just last week, the Pentagon armed
Defense Secretary Ashton Carter would
make a decision on the issue this spring
following the completion this month of a
working group on transgender service.
Grin said he hasnt seen any version of
the report being prepared by the working
group, but maintained the Human Rights
Campaign remains in contact with the
Defense Department on the issue.
One of my very rst meetings in this
job was at the Pentagon on this very
issue, Grin said. I know our teams have
been in communication as they always
are with our colleagues in government. It
is unconscionable that the discrimination
still exists as it relates to transgender
service members. Tens of thousands of
transgender Americans are ghting for
our country and risking their lives for our
country on a daily basis.
Asked for a timeline for when he thinks
the Pentagon should implement open
service after the report comes out, Grin
replied, Yesterday. It should have already
happened.
I think I said Im not sure how much
work needs to go into a report to tell us
that this needs to be lifted and this needs
to be changed immediately, Grin
added. To me, its unconscionable it
hasnt been changed years ago, and so
now, a timeline has been put into place
that the timeline was going to take six
months. Weve gone through those six
months, lets see what the report says.
But I have condence in the Pentagon
leadership and the secretary that hes

going to move quickly.

her organization is glad HRC has
prioritized working to end the trans
military ban.
SPARTA is working closely with
Pentagon ocials to establish good
policy on transgender military service,
Fulton said. Transgender troops are
serving with honor, and they deserve to
be treated with dignity and respect. Our
ongoing conversations with DOD leave us
optimistic this will be resolved favorably.
We appreciate HRCs sense of urgency
regarding the issue, though, and would
be happy to update Chad Grin on the
progress toward transgender service at
his convenience.
Grin defended GOP philanthropist
Paul Singer who, despite supporting LGBT
rights causes includingthe Human Rights
Campaign, has endorsed Republican
presidential candidate Marco Rubio.
The candidate has expressed anti-LGBT
views, such as indicating hed appoint
justices to overturn the Supreme Courts
decision on same-sex marriage and
reverse President Obamas executive
order against anti-LGBT discrimination
among federal contractors.
Meanwhile, Singer in 2013 donated
$250,000 to Americans for Workplace
Opportunity, a coalition group founded
by Grin that sought to pass the
Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The
same year, the Paul E. Singer Foundation
teamed up with the Daniel S. Loeb Family
Foundation to award the Human Rights
Campaign Foundation major grants over

three years to support LGBT rights at an
international level.
Ill say this about Paul Singer: He
has had an incredible impact on this
movement, Grin said. He, as you know,
for a decade actually has been a generous
philanthropist funding the work of the
movement, and then in the last six, seven
years has been a generous philanthropist
both from not only his foundation, but
also personally in funding many of these
battles around the country.
Grin also drew a contrast between
Singers views on LGBT rights and those of
Rubio, saying Singer is more consistent
with the majority of the American public
and also consistent with the majority of
Republicans.
You contrast that with Marco Rubios
views that could not be more out of touch
with the Republican electorate, Grin
said. So while Paul and I agree on issues
of equality, we disagree on plenty of other
issues, including support for Marco Rubio.
Asked whether Singers endorsement
will aect his relationship with the Human
Rights Campaign, Grin said, It is not my
job to police individual donors around
the country. Everyone has the right to
support whom they choose.
As it relates to this work, what I learned
from Ted Olson long ago is that you write
o no one when it comes to equality,
Grin said. There are folks that surprise
you day in and day out. Our job is to talk
to those who arent with us and bring
them to our side. It is my hope that
and its not just Paul its my hope that
Paul and other Republican donors and

voters who are out there that choose to
be Republican will continue to work hard
to change the candidates views on these
issues and also ultimately to help impact
and change the partys platform.
Asked whether its incumbent upon
Singer to condemn Rubio publicly for
pledging to roll back LGBT rights, Grin
said, Thats not for me to say. You can
ask him.
One initiative that may see a vote in
Congress this year is the Trans-Pacic
Partnership,
a
controversial
trade
agreement among 12 countries in the
Pacic Rim supported by President Obama.
The LGBT labor group Pride at Work and
the National LGBTQ Task Force opposethe
measure, citing concerns over expanding
trade with Malaysia and Brunei, which
criminalize same-sex relations.
Grin took a nuanced approach on the
Trans-Pacic Partnership, saying trade
agreements just generally can be very
productive as it relates to human rights
issues, but also cited concerns with the
measure.
As it specically relates to this trade
agreement, we have expressed a number
of concerns including some provisions
...that would impact the ability to access
medications, for instance, in a number of
places, Grin said. Another category
that I think I talked about publicly, if
not here, for the rst time, weve also
expressed about any country being
rewarded for being a human rights abuser
particularly around LGBT issues. And so,
those are two areas specically that weve
expressed within the administration as
well as on the Hill.
Grin suggested the Human Rights
Campaign could accept the Trans-Pacic
Partnership with modications, saying, I
hope the nal bill thats ultimately voted on
will take into account and make changes to
accommodate those concerns.
Jerame Davis, executive director at
Pride at Work, said hes heartened by
Grins remarks and hopes the Human
Rights Campaign joins in more substantive
activism against the agreement.

At Works and were thrilled HRC has
reiterated those concerns publicly,
Davis said. Pride at Work brought these
concerns to HRC in 2014 and they joined
our letter to President Obama that laid
out the serious issues LGBT people
worldwide will face if the TPP passes. Our
hope is that HRC will use their inuence
with the White House and lawmakers on
the Hill to address the concerns of LGBT
and HIV/AIDS advocates before the deal
comes up for a vote.

2 trans women attacked in Germany
Roll Call in March 2015 ran an ad from Log Cabin Republicans that urged Secretary of
State John Kerry not to sign a deal with Iran over its nuclear program.
Police in the German city of Dortmund say two transgender women were stoned
earlier this month.
Bild, a German newspaper, reported the incident took place on Jan. 10 near the citys
main train station.
One of the victims told Bild that three men began harassing her and the other trans
woman. She said they were then tackled to the ground.
One said, you must be stoned whores, she told Bild. And then they did that.
Bild reported that a police patrol car was near the train station when the attack took
place.
Kim-Ben Freigang, a Dortmund police ocial, identied the alleged perpetrators as
two 16-year-old teenagers and an 18-year-old man of North African descent. They have
been charged in connection with the incident.
The Dortmund attack took place less than two weeks after hundreds of women
said men sexually assaulted them during New Years celebrations in the nearby city of
Cologne.
Transgender Europe in a statement condemned the attack against the trans women
in Dortmund.
The initial situation of the perpetrators verbally and sexually harassing the two women
was sexist and degrading, said Transgender Europe. However, from the account of
the two women, it was not a planned attack or a planned stoning ritual as some news
outlets gave the impression. We are greatly concerned over double standards of news
outlets pushing this story for underlying racist sentiment and reporting, while using the
story to appeal to racist motives farther, whereas they would not take up trans peoples
lives otherwise.
Gay GOP group criticizes

Iran nuclear deal
A gay Republican group on Saturday criticized the implementation of the deal
that the U.S. and ve other countries reached with Iran over its nuclear program.
Log Cabin Republicans opposed the Iran deal then, we oppose the Iran deal
now and we will continue to oppose it in the future, Log Cabin Republicans
President Gregory T. Angelo told the Washington Blade.
Roll Call in March 2015 published a full-page ad from Log Cabin Republicans
that urged Secretary of State John Kerry not to broker a deal with Iran over its
nuclear program. The spot featured a silhouette of what appears to be a dead
man hanging from a rope attached to a gallows and two legs hanging in the air.
Iran is among the countries in which homosexuality remains punishable by death.
Log Cabin Republicans has long held the position that any deal with Iran
that does not include consideration of human rights abuses against women,
religious minorities and gays is a bad deal, Angelo told the Blade last July after
the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Russia and China announced the deal. This
is a bad deal.
The Iranian Railroad for Queer Refugees, a Toronto-based organization that
assists LGBT Iranians who have ed their homeland, last July criticized the deal.
IRQR feels it is important the public be educated that despite this deal,
human rights continue to be abused in Iran causing many to suer, said the
organization in a statement. The IRQR will continue to name the plight of Iranian
LGBT persons and to respond as more asylum seekers cry for support through
the arduous asylum process.
Iranian Railroad for Queer Refugees Executive Director Arsham Parsi, a gay
man from the Iranian city of Shiraz who received asylum from the Canadian
government, has lived in Toronto since 2006.
He told the Blade on Saturday his organizations criticisms of the deal remain.
International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Yukiya Amano on
Saturday announced the implementation of the deal hours after the release
of Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian and four other Americans who had
been imprisoned in Iran. The Associated Press reported the deal allows for the
reduction of economic sanctions that have crippled the countrys economy.
President Obama on Sunday in a statement he delivered from the White
House said sanctions against Iran remain in place over its human rights record.
Obama described Rezaian as a courageous journalist for the Washington Post
who wrote about the daily lives and hopes of the Iranian people. The president also
spoke about the four other Americans who had been unjustly detained by Iran.

Report: Anti-LGBT bias adversely impacts Jamaica

A new report indicates anti-LGBT discrimination and violence in Jamaica adversely
impacts the development of the countrys economy.
J-FLAG, a Jamaican LGBT advocacy group, in 2014 commissioned a study of the issue.
Ninety-three percent of the 316 people who took part in the study said discrimination
against gay Jamaicans is widespread.
More than 70 percent of respondents who identied themselves as gay said they
experienced some form of harassment or discrimination over the last year.
The report indicates that 32 percent of respondents said they had been threatened
with violence over the last ve years. It also notes lesbian Jamaicans face the threat of
corrective sexual violence that includes rape.
The report also notes, among other things, that LGBT Jamaicans are taken out of
productive employment when they are targeted because of their sexual orientation
or gender identity. They also face disproportionate rates of physical, psychological
and structural violence, which may restrict their ability to work due to injuries and
psychological trauma.
The report indicates LGBT Jamaicans also face multiple barriers to health care that
leads to reduced productivity.
Fear of violence and discrimination are preventing LGBT people in Jamaica from full
participation in society and the economy, writes M.V. Lee Badgett of the University of
Massachusetts-Amherst in the reports introduction. This fear encourages behaviors
which are detrimental to the aected persons wellbeing.

Sanders campaign blasts HRC over Clinton endorsement

Recalling Sanders support for civil
unions in Vermont when it became the
rst state to enact them in 2000, Briggs
said Sanders was a pioneer on this early
version of gay marriage, and has by far
the most exemplary record on gay rights
of any candidate ever in American history.
Both Dont Ask, Dont Tell and DOMA
became law under former President Bill
Clinton.
Hillary Clinton supported DOMA through
her 2000 campaign for a U.S. Senate
seat in New York and backed repealing
only Section 3 of the law during her rst
presidential campaign. Both Bill and Hillary
Clinton now support marriage equality.
So who knows what prompted the
Human Rights Campaign to do what it
does I have trouble myself guring why
they do some of the things they do over
the years but I think the gay men and
lesbians all over the country will know
who has been their champion for a long,
long time and will consider that as they
make up their mind on support for his
campaign, Briggs said.
Asked whether he meant to include
bisexual and transgender people in his
description of gay men and lesbians,
Briggs said that was correct and he meant
LGBTQ people all over the country.
Briggs declined to elaborate on what
actions the Human Rights Campaign has
taken that he doesnt understand.
Brandon Lorenz, a spokesperson
for the Human Rights Campaign, in a
statement to the Blade responded to the
Sanders campaigns criticisms.
There are certainly several friends of
equality in this race, but the 32 community
leaders who comprise HRCs Board of
Directors have unanimously decided that
Hillary Clinton is the champion we need
to ght for us each day on the campaign
trail and every day in the White House,
said Lorenz. She has a strong record, a
strong agenda, and a strong ability to win
against any Republican running on an
anti-LGBT platform in November and lead
from Day One.
Each of the Democratic presidential
candidates submitted responses to
questionnaires by the Human Rights
Campaign, which the organization
made public on the day it announced its
endorsement. Both Clinton and Sanders
responded in the armative to every
action HRCsought in its questionnaire.
In May, Sanders, in an interview with
the Washington Blade, became the rst
presidential candidate to support openly
trans service in the U.S. military and made
a point about including trans people in
his campaign and presidency.
Asked what steps can be taken to

address the high rate of violence against
trans women, particularly trans women
of color, Sanders said, I think we have
to, among other things, do a better job in
educating our police ocers.
But Sanders hasnt always been in favor
of full marriage equality. In 2006 when
asked by the Vermont-based Times Argus
newspaper if Vermont should legalize
same-sex marriage, Sanders was quoted
as saying, Not right now, not after what
we went through, referring to the conict
in the state over civil unions.
HRC

then-Democratic
candidate Barack Obama in June 2008
after he had secured the nomination
following a bruising primary battle with
Hillary Clinton.
The campaign for former Maryland
Gov. Martin OMalley didnt respond to
the Blades request for comment on the
Human Rights Campaigns endorsement
of Clinton.

According to the Human Rights Campaign,
Clinton is set to accept the endorsement
Sunday at an event in Des Moines, Iowa, with
Grin and HRC supporters.

recommendation was unanimous as was
the vote by the full board of directions
that followed, the spokesperson said.
Clinton said in a statement shes

progress on LGBT rights.
But our work is far from over, Clinton
said. Too many LGBT Americans still
face discrimination in employment, in
housing, in education, in health care
because of who they are or who they love.
And the stakes in this election couldnt
be higher. The Republican candidates
for president have not only hurled
hateful, insulting rhetoric about the LGBT
community theyve made it clear that if

elected, they will roll back the rights that
so many have fought for.
Clinton reiterated her pledge to support
the Equality Act, allowing transgender
people to serve openly in the U.S.
military and ending widely discredited
ex-gay conversion therapy for minors.
In addition, she said shed expand
access to HIV prevention and treatment;
confront
disproportionate
violence
facing transgender people, especially
transgender women of color; and continue
her work as former secretary of state on
international LGBT rights.
Im proud to stand with the Human
Rights Campaign in this ght, Clinton
added. Together, we can and will make our
country and our world more just, fair,
and equal for generations to come.
According to HRC, the endorsement

was based on support for issues of
concern to LGBT people, demonstrated
leadership on LGBT issues and viability.
All candidates both Democrats and
Republicans were asked to ll out a
questionnaire on LGBT issues, but only
Clinton as well as Democratic candidates
Sen. Bernard Sanders (I-Vt.) and former
Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley responded
with answers, according to HRC.
Asked whether the endorsement
means Clinton is entitled to monetary
support as a result of the endorsement,
an HRC spokesperson said sta and
volunteers will organize 1.5 million
members and supporters about whats at
stake in the election and are already on
the ground in Iowa, New Hampshire and
South Carolina.

Trump slams Cruz over gay donors

Although Donald Trump is considered to have largely avoided attacks on
LGBT people in his presidential campaign, last week he criticized Ted Cruz for
taking donations from people who espouse gay marriage.
The Republican presidential front-runner made the remarks on his Twitter
feed days after he and Cruz had a contentious moment in the most recent GOP
presidential debate over Cruz attacking Trump for having New York values.
Calling Cruz the ultimate hypocrite, Trump links to a 2015 story in the New
York Times revealing Cruz attended a fundraiser for him in New York City hosted
by gay business owners Mati Weiderpass and Ian Reisner.
Ted is the ultimate hypocrite. Says one thing for money, does another for
votes, Trump tweeted. He continued, If Ted Cruz is so opposed to gay marriage,
why did he accept money from people who espouse gay marriage?
Trumps jab at Cruz comes as the presidential caucuses approach on Feb
2. in Iowa, a state where social conservatives and evangelicals dominate the
Republican Party. Trump and Cruz have alternated for the top spot in the state
in polls.

D.C. lesbian feminist house nominated for historic landmark status

discussion for many years to come.

Meinke said he was relieved that the
quest to secure the Furies house as a
historic site cleared its rst hurdle when
the owners of the house since 2004,
Robert Pohl and his wife Antonia Herzog,
immediately gave their consent to D.C.
historic landmark status for their home.
Pohl has said he was pleased to discover
the houses association with the Furies
when he conducted his own research on
the house shortly after purchasing it. He
told WAMU Radio in an interview last year
that he has already hung photos on his
walls of Furies members working in the
house back in the early 70s and he looks
forward to placing a plaque on the house
indicating it has historic landmark status.
Under the citys rules for obtaining such
a designation, the process can be delayed
and additional obstacles could emerge if
the property owner doesnt give consent
to the application.
Just last week the nomination
received another boost when Advisory
Neighborhood Commission 6B, which
has jurisdiction over the section of Capitol
Hill where the house is located, voted
unanimously to approve the nomination.
According to Meinke, the nomination
cleared another hurdle earlier this
month when the sta of D.C.s Historic
Preservation
Oce
approved
the
nomination, enabling it to advance to
citys Historic Preservation Review Board
(HPRB). The HPRB has scheduled a public
hearing on the nomination for Jan. 28.

nomination, Meinke said. Weve had
letters of support from around the
country. I think weve got 16 or maybe
17 now, he said, including one from the
National LGBTQ Task Force.
Among the Furies members that
Meinke interviewed in preparation for
his nominating application was Rita Mae
Brown, the lesbian activist and author
of the nationally acclaimed 1973 novel
Rubyfruit Jungle, which touched on
lesbian feminist issues.
Other members of the Furies collective
were D.C.-area lesbian activists and
feminists Charlotte Bunch, Joan Biren,
Ginny Berson, Sharon Deevey and Coletta
Reid. Nearly all of the Furies members
became involved in other lesbian feminist
activities in other parts of the country
after the group disbanded in 1973, Meinke
writes in the nomination document.
The document notes that the house
at 219 11th St., S.E., took on additional
historic signicance after the Furies
moved out in 1973. Later that same year
lesbian feminists Judy Winsett and Leslie
Reeves rented the house and used its
large basement space which the Furies
used to produce their tabloid newspaper
as a jewelry-making studio for a small
jewelry retail business the two operated,
Meinke writes.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) has become
the rst Republican co-sponsor in the
U.S. Senate of comprehensive legislation
aimed at prohibiting discrimination
against LGBT people. The news was rst
reported by Buzzfeed.
Kirk conrmed in a statement to the
Washington Blade he would co-sponsor
the Equality Act, which would amend the
Civil Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act
to prohibit anti-LGBT discrimination in all
areas of federal civil rights law.
Discrimination on the basis of being
gay is against the law in Illinois and should
be against the law nationwide, Kirk said.
Kirks announcement comes days after
Rep. Bob Dold (R-Ill.) announced he would

become the rst Republican co-sponsor
of the legislation in the U.S. House. Prior
to their announcements, the bills enjoyed
support from only Democrats in both
chambers of Congress.
Chad Grin, president of the Human
Rights Campaign, said in a statement Kirk
has once again proven his leadership by
becoming the rst Republican co-sponsor
of the Equality Act.
His support for the Equality Act sends a
strong message that fairness and equality
are bipartisan values, Grin added. It
also reects the view of the overwhelming
majority of all Americans who believe that
everyone, including LGBT people, should
be able to have a fair chance to earn a
living, provide for their families, and live
free from fear of discrimination.
The legislation is sponsored by Rep.
David Cicilline (D-R.I.) in the U.S. House
and Sen. Je Merkley (D-Ore.) in the U.S.
Senate.
Kirk is facing a considerable challenge
in retaining his seat in the upcoming

election against Rep. Tammy Duckworth
(D-Ill.), whos a co-sponsor of the Equality
Act in the U.S. House.
The Illinois Republican is considered
a supporter of LGBT rights. He signed
a friend-of-the-court brief urging the
U.S. Supreme Court to rule for samesex marriage nationwide, was one of 11
Republican senators to vote for granting
married same-sex couples full access to
Social Security and veterans benets, and
in 2013 was an original co-sponsor of ENDA.
The lack of Republican support for
the bill upon introduction in July was
controversial. After all, the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act has had original
Republican co-sponsors right o the bat
in years past.
Gregory Angelo, president of Log Cabin
Republican, responded when asked
whether his organization would support
the Equality Act now that it has Republican
co-sponsors with an unequivocal no.
The Equality Act remains imperfect
legislation with zero chance of passage,

Angelo said. Its also a purely partisan
bill, as evidenced by the Democratic
Congressional Campaign Committee
actually declaring they would pour
even more resources into defeating
Congressman Dold this November after
he declared his support for the Equality
Act last week. I dont expect the DSCC to
react any dierently to Sen. Kirk.

announced support for the Equality Act
last week that no Republican criticized
him, only the ocial congressional arm
of the Democratic National Committee.
If there is any silver lining here, it is
that Congressman Dold has vowed to
heavily amend the Equality Act to make it
more palatablefor passage by commonsense conservatives, and provided
colleagues on his side of the aisle with
a cautionary tale: If youre tempted to
co-sponsor the Equality Act to appeal
to Democrats, you are in for a rude
awakening, Angelo added.

Human rights commission honors PFLAG

The Howard County Human Rights Commission presented the 2015 Human
Rights Award to the Columbia-Howard County chapter of PFLAG at the chapters
monthly meeting on Jan. 12. The award is given annually to individuals and/or
organizations selected from nominations submitted by the community. According
to the Commission, The purpose of the award is to recognize exemplary citizenship,
dedicated leadership and outstanding achievement in eliminating or eradicating
discrimination, while advancing human rights for all residents of Howard County.
In a statement the commission said, For the past 20 years, PFLAG ColumbiaHoward County has been at the forefront of issues involving the LGBT community.
It currently serves over 200 families annually, oering support for parents and
families of the children and youth, as well as adults, who are members of this
community through monthly support meetings. In addition, the organization
has been a very eective advocate for this community.
The commission noted the chapters eorts in achieving legislation passed
that includes gender identity as a protected category in Howard County and has
also inuenced legislation at the state level.
In addition, the commission lauded the chapter for providing training and
support to the public school systems in Howard, Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Prince
Georges and Montgomery counties so they can support the LGBT students in
their schools. Education has also been provided to the Howard County Police
Department and two major local employers.
The 2015 Human Rights Commission Award recognizes the decades of time,
eort and commitment that PFLAG Columbia-Howard County has devoted to
supporting the families and members of the LGBT community and, above all, the
role that its advocacy and educational initiatives have played in protecting and
advancing human rights in our county.
Colette Roberts, the chapters co-founder and chair for 15 years, was a corecipient of the award in 2007.
I am thrilled that we are the recipients of this 2015 HRC Award, Susan
Garner, current chapter chair, told the Blade. It reinforces the continued work
our wonderful volunteers do to provide support, education and advocacy to the
extended families of our LGBTQ community.

UK study: PrEP prevents thousands of HIV cases

LONDON Allowing gay men access to new drugs could prevent about 7,400
extra cases of HIV in the UK before the end of the decade, the Independent
reports citing newly published research.
Oering PrEP alongside regular HIV testing and early treatment to just a
quarter of men who have sex with men (MSM) at high risk of contracting the
virus could prevent almost half the number of new diagnoses in that period,
boosting calls for the method to be provided free on the National Health Service,
the article said.
If the status quo is maintained, almost 17,000 new HIV infections in MSM
between 2014 and 2020 will emerge, new research published in the Lancet HIV
journal suggests. Researchers estimate that even when targeted only at highrisk men, PrEP was more eective than all other individual measures aimed at
the entire UK MSM population, preventing almost 10,000 new infections.
Most recent Public Health England gures show an estimated 103,700 people
in the UK were living with HIV in 2014, with around 18,100 unaware and at risk
of unknowingly passing on the virus to others. Among the MSM group, 6,500
remain unaware of their HIV infection, the article notes.
In addition, there continues to be high levels of transmission in MSM and
3,360 MSM were newly diagnosed in 2014, the largest number ever recorded,
the Independent reports.
Researchers say pets help LGBT seniors

SAN FRANCISCO Researchers in aging have begun noticing how pet
ownership can be a boon for older adults, especially LGBT seniors who are more
likely to live alone and lack family connections, the Bay Area Reporter reports.
Their ndings are bolstering calls by senior advocates for policies that foster
pet ownership among older adults, particularly those who live in assisted living
facilities, retirement homes or rental apartments that ban pets.
The love and aection pets bring to people are very important, Anna
Muraco, Ph.D., of the Department of Sociology at Loyola Marymount University,
Los Angeles, told the Reporter.
Muraco presented her study Life Saving in Every Way, about the role of pets
for 50-plus LGBT adults, in November, at the Gerontological Society of America
annual conference. She co-authored it with Jennifer Putney, PhD, of Simmons
College in Boston.
The two researchers culled through ndings of the National Health, Aging and
Sexuality Study: Caring and Aging with Pride Over Time. Started in 2009, it is
the rst national LGBT senior study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Muraco and Putney also interviewed a subsample of 59 respondents from the
Los Angeles area, the Reporter article said.
Of the 1,039 LGBT senior pet owners in the national study, about half were
female, and nearly half had a disability, the Bay Area Reporter said.

class. In 2016, you will continue to see a trends toward combining your favorite
group classes into one amazing experience. You will do Barre classes paired with
boxing and spin class paired with weight training.
I love this trend because it forces your body to do more work and burn
more calories because youre working in dierent planes of motions while
simultaneously using both your cardio respiratory and musculoskeletal systems
to produce energy.
3. Emotional experiences. More and more you will begin to see boutique
gyms and tness events pop up because they provide something greater more
than what you get from group tness class or 45 minutes of a treadmill. Ragnar,
Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, SoulCycle and Pure Yoga all come to mind when it
comes to providing a deeper emotional response.
These experiences allow you to connect with something larger whether its
working with a group of people to accomplish a goal or connecting to your own
frustrations, vulnerabilities, strengths and letting these emotions out through
exercises.
4. Try a CSA. Community Supported Agriculture has been around since the
1980s but has been growing in popularity with advent of technology, making
it more convenient, accessible and aordable. In short, CSAs are mostly run by
local, organic and sustainable farms that allow folks to sign-up for memberships
to share in the harvest of their in season crops.

your favorite fruits and veggies, have home deliver or even skip a week or two if

Walmart reneges on Ward 7

No surprise the retail giant is
abandoning D.C. locations
LATEEFAH WILLIAMS writes regularly for

Last week, Walmart announced that it

plans to close 269 stores worldwide (154
in the United States) and that it would not
move forward on its D.C. stores in Capital
Gateway and Skyland, both east of the river
in Ward 7. Dont let the store closures fool
you, Walmart still plans to build hundreds
of new stores this year. Furthermore, most
of the stores that are closing are Walmart
Express stores. Only 12 Supercenters are
closing and the two Ward 7 stores were
slated to be Supercenters.
In a previous column that I wrote on
Sept. 7, 2013, titled, D.C. residents a pawn
in Walmarts chess match, I expressed
doubt that Walmart would build the east of
the river stores if they did not build those
stores rst. This was during the time that
District ocials were contemplating passing the Large Retailer Accountability Act
(LRAA), which would have required businesses that are at least 75,000 square feet
and have more than $1 billion in sales to

pay a living wage. Walmart balked at the
bill and said it would not build any stores in
D.C. if the bill passed.
To quote my previous column, if LRAA
passes, Walmart is threatening not to
build the two planned stores east of the
river and the one in Ward 5 [which ended
up being scuttled], which are slated to be
built in communities where retail is needed
most. Our local politicians succumbed to
Walmarts threats, then-Mayor Gray vetoed
the legislation, and just enough Council
members followed suit to prevent overriding his veto. Despite giving Walmart what
it wanted, unfortunately, my prediction has
come to fruition. Walmart was allowed to
build the three stores in Northwest rst
and it has now backed out of its agreement
to build the two Ward 7 stores.
While I acknowledged then (and still acknowledge) that Im not a fan of Walmart
due to its labor practices, I felt that if
Walmart were to come to D.C., it was imperative that it moved into the under-resourced communities rst.
In my 2013 article, I stated, We would
not even be having this debate if Walmart
built the rst D.C. stores at Skyland Town
Center and Capital Gateway, both in Ward
7, instead of in Northwest. Walmarts leverage is based on the fear that it is those
communities only hope to get major retail.
I guarantee you that if the stores currently
under construction were the two in Ward
7, the LRAA vote would not have even been
close. It would have passed the Council by
a veto-proof margin and Mayor Gray would

have signed it. So, we are mere pawns in

Queen Walmarts chess match because city
ocials failed to request that Walmart build
the Ward 7 stores rst and now Walmart
has backed the city into a corner.
I still stand by this sentiment, but I want
to be clear that this is not intended to point
ngers at anyone other than Walmart.
Walmart is the bad actor. Whether I agree
or disagree with the actions of some elected ocials, I truly believe that everyone
(our previous mayor, our current mayor,
and our Council members) was acting in
the best interest of the city with the information that they had at the time.
So, where do we go from here? Well, we
could boycott the three stores in Northwest, but lets be honest, that wont be effective. Those of us most willing to boycott
dont shop there anyway. There is clear
evidence that Walmart is targeting stores
in areas with high minimum wages for closure. We cant let Walmart get away with
this and stagnate wages nationwide, so a
movement to illuminate Walmarts latest
instance of corporate greed may be eective.
The District has spent a lot of money
over several decades to force existing
businesses to leave Skyland by eminent
domain in order to redevelop it. While
some members of the nearby community
wanted to upgrade the business amenities, there were others who regularly
patronized these businesses. Now those
businesses are gone and there is nothing
to show for it.
Furthermore, there is still the matter of
the Safeway covenant at Skyland, which
covers the parking lot that Walmart may
have used. According to the Washington
Business Journal, Walmart signed its lease
at Skyland in December 2014. D.C. government condemned Safeways covenant
by eminent domain in June 2015 and asserted that the covenant had no value, but
Walmart refused to move forward as long
as the covenant existed. Thus, the District
settled with Safeway to have the covenant
removed.
Perhaps one of the best things that we
can do is take this as a learning opportunity. The next time an entity wants to build in
multiple parts of the District and there are
some areas that need the resources more
than others, the District has to be rm and
demand that those areas come rst. That
means the District has to actually be willing
to walk away from a deal if that condition is
not met. This is not the 1980s. We are not
begging businesses to come into the District. We have more leverage than we know,
and its time that we, as a city, started using
it to ensure that all communities have access to quality services.

Gay bars and bachelorette parties: Do they mix?

Penis hats in restaurants are
just plain tacky

Let me set the stage. Not a fancy restaurant by any means. No Brown Derby
or the Palm or anything like that. But a
nice-enough restaurant. New space, nice
lighting, a tree growing in the middle of
the room, hipster stu on the menu like
chicken liver parfait, $30 red snapper specials, cloth napkins.
That sort of thing.
The time was about 6 p.m. My friends
and I had just completed a half-marathon. Sore, a little exhausted, we wanted
to treat ourselves to a nice dinner a littler
earlier in the evening. The meal began
and all was well.
Enter a bachelorette party. With one
of the girls all in their mid-20s or so
wearing a hat featuring blinking penises.

That sort of thing.
I shrugged it o. But a friend in the
group quietly asked our server if he could
speak to manager. Pressing him on the
issue, he said that as gay man, this kind
of display can rub him the wrong way.
Adding that for years, weve dealt with
the scores of bachelorette parties descending on our clubs and bars in some
sort of whirlwind and knee-high boots,
puy vest and good intentions. All slurring and shouting things like, Kiss my
friend, shes getting married! or, Show
us your junk! or We love the gays!
Many a good bar or club, he claimed, has
been ruined by sorority outings of girls
looking for good music, fun spaces and
drink specials.
On top of all this, he thought the blinking penis hat was just crass. And in my
friends defense, I must ask, when did this
become a thing? What grandmother out
there says, Lets go pick out your china

pattern, and we have a wedding brunch
to plan, and I would like to give you the
blinking penis hat my mother gave me
when I got engaged?
My friend then asked what would happen if he came in wearing a giant vagina
hat. Im guessing hed be asked to leave,
maybe even wrestled to the ground and
thrown outside. Dont get me wrong, I
dont care about the objectication of the
penis. And I would applaud the girl for
wearing it at, say, a Mike Huckabee rally.
Beyond that, he thought the bigger argument here is privilege. Straight white
girls and straight white males have a
great deal of privilege when it comes
to navigating space with behavior that
could be seen as rude, crude and oensive and expect to be either applauded
or defended. Straight whites walk and
weave into these places with both impunity and a certain unawareness as to
what they are granted. (Im reminded

of the recent story of a group of black
women kicked o a wine tour of being
too loud.) As gay men, and any minority group for that matter, weve fought
hard for our own space. And while much
progress has been made that allows the
boundaries surrounding these spaces
to become more permeable, the spaces themselves remain sensitive and, to
many, sacred. And while the restaurant
described above wasnt a gay space by
any means, my friend was bothered that
the girl didnt bother to consider the experience of others.
And beyond whatever arguments Ive
managed to make here, girls, please know
that wearing a ickering phallic crown in
public is just plain tacky.

Bowser is smart to urge
commonsense on enterprise
mandates

Last week brought a helluva humiliating series of embarrassments for D.C.

elected ocials.
Local politicians have, however, no one
to blame but themselves. Except perhaps
the labor union sidekicks and singleminded pie-in-the-sky policy groups promoting a steady stream of onerous new
business mandates while disingenuously
claiming and falsely promising no economic downsides.
On Friday morning, Walmart announced the company was scuttling
plans to open two additional superstores
in the District slated for east of the river
disappointing lower-income residents eager for convenient access to the retailers
goods and groceries.
While business development decisions

are by nature complicated and inuenced
by a complex array of considerations a
concept politicians seem utterly incapable of comprehending interconnected
regulatory factors stood out.
D.C. Council member Jack Evans, who
chairs the nance and revenue committee, sat in on a private meeting between
Walmart ocials and Mayor Muriel Bowser and her deputy mayor for planning and
economic development. Evans publicly
indicated that company representatives
were more candid in that setting about
their decision to halt adding locations beyond three stores already opened.
Walmart ocials explained that successively imposed mandates on businesses
in the District and a bevy of proposed
new legislative edicts in the pipeline had
soured the company on the aordability
and attractiveness of growing operations
here. Evans said store ocials cited the
looming possibility of another supersized hike in the minimum wage to 15
dollars an hour, by possible ballot initiative currently under court challenge, as a
primary concern.
Top-tier worst-in-the-nation and highest-in-the-region corporate tax rates and
a notoriously business-unfriendly regulatory regime didnt exactly encourage expansion either.
But its the plethora of half-baked proposals currently being oated around
the D.C. Council these days that cause

enterprise the greatest worries about a
compounding and cumulatively counterproductive layering eect. One deep
cut might not kill the golden goose, but
repeated grievous wounding can.
A second public hearing held only the
day before Walmarts announcement,
on an extravagantly excessive paid leave
proposal exclusively nanced by yet another business tax, was only the most
egregious example.
The Washington Post editorial board
called the plan preposterous and the
left-leaning Urban Institute warned program costs would total $1.3 billion, necessitating that the projected business
tax triple to an astounding 3 percent of
wages, or higher.
D.C. CFO Jerey DeWitt would only offer that payouts would clearly exceed revenues, creating a decit that disallowed
certication the proposal was eligible for
approval. Reading between the lines, it
wasnt dicult to decipher that the citys
head bean counter couldnt make a denitive determination based on the sloppily
crafted bills content.
Also in the works are proposals to dictate three-week advance scheduling for
employees of national chains and franchises, a standard in eect nowhere else.
It will inevitably trickle down to all employers. San Francisco, the only jurisdiction in
the country to pass a similar scheduling
bill with a shorter advance notice requirement, has continued to delay implementation due to excessive complexity and
negative ramications.
The litany of other proposals includes
dictating minimum employee work hours
and actually restricting the hiring of new
employees. A broadening array of well-intentioned but misguided attempts to micromanage local enterprise wont create
a progressive paradise but will instead
only punish the poor.
One veil-piercing inquiry lurks amidst
all this nonsense. Who oers better job
training for entry-level and lower-skilled
unemployed residents: the District government or Walmart? The tiny number of
government-cycled trainees ill-prepared
for the real-world workforce or the nearly
2,000 Walmart employees succeeding
at the companys stores and striving to
move up to new positions of responsibility?
The Districts employment services program is so utterly dysfunctional that D.C.
is the only jurisdiction in the nation the
Department of Labor classies as a highrisk partner for job training and employment programs.
Credit goes to Mayor Bowser for cautioning that these ill-fated political interventions will only produce the opposite of
what was intended.
The choice is simple, straightforward
and stark.

The year of the bathroom ghts

Struggle for full civil rights
will run through restrooms
told you couldnt use any public bathrooms,

or bathrooms in schools or your workplace?
How would you would go about living your
daily life? I can go out and use a public restroom or stop in a hotel or restaurant and no
one questions which bathroom I will use. The
reality is anyone who uses a stall when going
to the bathroom doesnt worry or even know
who is in the stall next to them. So why does
it concern so many people that the person
in the next stall might be transgender? They
dont see you and you dont see them.
Last year Houston voted on its Equal Rights
Ordinance, which would have extended protections over housing, employment and
other areas to gay, lesbian and transgender
people. Voters rejected the ordinance by a
whopping margin of 62-38 percent. The most
contentious part of the bill that led to it being
called the bathroom bill would have allowed
transgender people to use toilets of their
choosing. Opponents of the bill raised fears
it would lead to sexual predators in womens
restrooms.
Common sense says this is nonsense. If
sexual predators wanted to go into womens
toilets they could do it now. Predators dont

The year 2016 will be known as the year of

the bathroom ghts. Misleading and insulting ads targeting the right of trans people to
use the public restroom consistent with their
gender identity was blamed by many for the
defeat of the Houston civil rights law last year.
The ght over which bathroom a transgender
person can use will continue across the nation.
While some may think this isnt a big issue
it is major for transgender people who like
everyone else simply have the need to pee on
a regular basis. Can you imagine if you were
follow the law, which is why we call them

predators. Transgender people arent predators, in fact they are often the people preyed
on. To believe a fth grade youngster who is
transgender would simply claim that status
to attack someone of the opposite gender is
crazy. If that person wanted to attack someone there are many ways for them to do it
now. But what we are seeing today is people
throwing common sense out the window
and being scared away from giving others the
simple right to pee when they need to.
Sadly, the ads are eective. According
to Mara Keisling of the National Center for
Transgender Equality, focus groups that began with six out of 10 people being comfortable with transgender persons ended with
zero support after they were shown the vicious commercials aired in the Houston civil
rights ght.
Today, there are bills in Florida, Kentucky
and other states focusing on the bathroom
rights of trans people. This appears to be
the LGBT civil rights battle of 2016. The implications are great for any LGBT civil rights
bill that would be introduced across the nation. Many in the LGBT community say they
will not support any bill that doesnt have

bathroom rights clearly stated in it. Others
will oppose any bill that doesnt explicitly oppose the Religious Freedom Restoration Act
(RFRA). Groups that once approved of RFRA
when they believed it would be helpful to
protect diverse individuals now oppose it
for reasons explained in the Washington
Post: The ACLU supported the RFRAs passage at the time because it didnt believe the
Constitution, as newly interpreted by the
Supreme Court, would protect people such
as Iknoor Singh, whose religious expression
does not harm anyone else. But we can no
longer support the law in its current form.
For more than 15years, we have been concerned about how the RFRA could be used to
discriminate against others. As the events of
the past couple of years amply illustrate, our
fears were well-founded. While the RFRA may
serve as a shield to protect Singh, it is now often used as a sword to discriminate against
women, gay and transgender people and
others. Eorts of this nature will likely only increase should the Supreme Court rule as is
expected that same-sex couples have the
freedom to marry.
Some think I should dress more like

a woman. Some think I should dress
more like a man.
I may not fit some

ideas about gender,
and I am a proud
part of DC.
Please treat me the same way any
person would want to be treated:
with courtesy and respect.

The 9:30 Club, celebrating its 35th

anniversary this month, has been a
gay-friendly spot since day one. Adam
Lambert is among the out acts who have
performed there.
FAMED VENUE HAS WELCOMED GAY ACTS THROUGHOUT 35-YEAR HISTORY

The 9:30 Club is one of the nations

most iconic venues and has hosted an
enormous variety of artists since its
founding in 1980. The club is currently
celebrating its 35th anniversary with a
new deluxe hardcover, 9:30 The Book,
which details the history of the hallowed
venue and includes reections from
many of the countless artists who have
performed there over the last three-anda-half decades.
There has been no shortage of LGBT
artists to play both at its original F Street
location and its current location at 815 V
St., N.W. The club was known for the roster
of punk and hardcore heavyweights that
regularly blew the doors o the place
(Circle Jerks, Mission of Burma, Agent
Orange, Minor Threat, Government Issue,
Mists, Black Flag, Killing Joke, Dead
Kennedys and others). Seminal postpunk/goth pioneers Bauhaus played a

show in early 1981, only a few months
after the release of their debut album
In the Flat Field. It wasnt long, though,
until a wider variety of artists made the
9:30 Club their tour stop in D.C., including
LGBT artists of all genres.
Self-described queer artist Michael
Stipe performed with R.E.M. at the venue
multiple times, including in November
1982 in support of their Chronic Town EP,
and a show on March 12, 1983, precisely
one month before the band released its
classic full-length debut Murmur. The
main set opened with Gardening at Night
and closed with Radio Free Europe, the
two early songs that cracked open the
door for their wider success. Minnesotabased Hsker D, who would become
one of the 80s most important alternative

rock titans, played their rst gig at the 9:30
Club on April 24, 1983. It was the start of
a long and fruitful relationship between
the club and Bob Mould, whos gay, which
continues to this day.
The rst of multiple appearances by
pop duo Erasure was on May 14, 1987
in support of their second album, The
Circus. Gay singer Andy Bell shared his
fond memories of that rst 9:30 Club
appearance: The stage was so teeny and
it was so crowded that I felt like Alice in
Wonderland after she ate the cookie that
turned her into a giant. It was an amazing
gig, your head touched the ceiling and the
audience would grab you by the ankles.
Also it was very, very hot.
The duos most recent stop was for two
electrifying performances in September 2014
in support of their album The Violet Flame.

Rufus Wainwright, the acclaimed
Canadian singer/songwriter who is gay,
has played at the 9:30 Club numerous
times, with the crowd growing with his
popularity.
The 9:30 Club has a stage that moves
back depending on how many spectators
are at the show, always making the room
look well attended, he says. I cherish the
experience of starting out there with a
sliver to work with, then a rectangle, and
nally a big fat square full of punters thanks
to the backwards moving stage. Hope that
stage dont start moving forward.
Melissa Etheridge, a rock legend who
has been churning out great albums since
her 1988 self-titled debut, played a highly

I have been out for 16 years. My parents
and they still do not know.

Anyone who frequents Phase 1 on Capitol Hill knows Senait Tekle, the longtime bartender/barback who says her work there is more than a job.
I am invested in Phase 1 because its my safe haven, says Tekle, whos
worked there for 12 years and was a customer before that. As a customer, I
always felt safe within those walls with no fear of being kicked out or stared
at for being who I am. I want the LGBTQ community to feel how I felt and still
feel when Im within those walls. Its where I have grown to be comfortable in
my own skin and to be a strong lesbian.
Tekle works by day as a travel counselor at American Express Global
Business and is at Phase 1 on weekends.
A native of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, she won a lottery for permanent U.S.
residency against enormous odds and has been in the D.C. area for 18 years.
The 47-year-old is in a relationship and lives in Woodbridge, Va.

Whos your LGBT hero?

President Barack Obama. He had
Dont Ask, Dont Tell repealed. He told
America that love is love on national TV
and that we gays should be granted the
same rights to marry. For me that right
there was a big emotional moment.

nightspot, past or present?
Present will be Phase 1 Capitol Hill, all
day every day. I also really miss Chaos.

shines again in Van

There are many good reasons to
see The Lady in the Van, but the main
reason is the vibrant award-winning
performance of Dame Maggie Smith,
who plays the eccentric Miss Shepherd, a
mysterious homeless woman of dubious
habits and domineering manner.
One day in 1974 she parks her yellow
van in the driveway of mild-mannered
playwright Alan Bennetts posh London
home. Soon the imperious, delirious
Miss Shepherd is demanding to use the
bathroom in his house and requesting
that Bennett run extension cords from
the house to her van. She ends up staying
15 years.
This unlikely story is the subject of
a 1989 memoir of esteemed British
actor and playwright Alan Bennett, best
known to American audiences for the
lm adaptations of his stage plays The
History Boys and The Madness of King
George. In 1999, working with director
and long-time collaborator Nick Hytner,
he turned the book into a stage play that
featured Smiths Olivier Award-winning
performance. Fifteen years later, the busy
trio nally found time to bring the work
to the screen, luckily preserving Bennetts
literate script and Smiths bravura
performance for generations to come. Its
showing now at area theaters including
Landmark and Angelika.
Initially daunted by the prospect of
how to make a writers life interesting to
an audience, Bennett stumbled upon a
fascinating device. He split himself in two.
Theres Alan Bennett the person who
interacts with people in the outside world,
and Alan Bennett the writer, who watches
out the bay window and scribbles notes
that eventually get turned into nished
pieces. In the lm, both are played by
understated actor Alex Jennings.

Its a great device. Without ever resorting
to pat answers, the two Bennetts discuss
the ethics of basing characters on real
people (Bennett the writer scrupulously
notes when the lm takes liberties), how
to deal with Bennetts ailing mother,
nosy neighbors, coming to terms with
his sexuality and the frustrations of
dealing with Miss Shepherd and her
social workers, who insist on involving
him in her care plans. The clever device
oers a fascinating glimpse into Bennetts
writing process and gives the movie an
unexpected emotional depth.
While the script centers on the
inscrutable bond between Bennett and
Miss Shepherd, the witty screenplay also
allows for some delightful supporting and
cameo appearances by well-known British
actors who have worked with Hytner and
Bennett on their previous collaborations.
Frances de la Tour (Vicious) is delightful
as the droll Mrs. Vaughn Williams.
Veteran stage actor Roger Allam leads
a posse of terried neighbors who are
too polite to kick Miss Shepherd out
of their neighborhood. History Boys
alums Dominic Cooper, James Corden
and Russell Tovey appear as a sensitive
actor who disappoints Bennett by being
straight, a frustrated market vendor and
one of the rent boys Bennett summons
to his house.
But mainly, Bennetts sharp screenplay
explores two intriguing mysteries:
who is Miss Shepherd and how does a
shy British author openly embrace his
sexuality and dive into life beyond the bay
window where he writes? Bennett and
Hytner, both gay, explore these puzzles
with a deft hand. Bennetts refusal to kick
Miss Shepherd out of his driveway may
seem inexplicable and frustrating, but
the talented trio of Smith, Hytner and
Bennett move through the years at an
assured pace and the nal scenes pack an
unexpected emotional wallop. And thats
a good reason to see a movie.

Rosebud Film Festival will run its showcase at the Naval Heritage Center (701
Pennsylvania Ave., N.W.) on Saturday, Jan. 23 from 2-8 p.m.
The showcase will feature 25 lms, including Hill of the Hapersnoks from

Out lmmaker tames muses in Hapersnoks

In her lm Hill of the Hapersnoks, showing this weekend at the
Rosebud Film Festival, out lmmaker Rinny Wilson, working with cocreator Andrea Ste, tackled the question, As an author tries to write
her masterpiece, her muses manifest within her novel as pesky and
destructive creatures. How will she bring them under control and how
will her characters deal with the consequences?
After serving as writer, director, director of photography and editor
of Hill of the Hapersnoks, Wilson has decided to focus her eorts to
supporting the Directors Roundtable with Women in Film and Video
(WIFV). To bring greater diversity to the lm world, she will serve as
director of photography for emerging female directors.

Nominees surprisingly
straight and white this year

Legendary Oscar host of yore Bob Hope
once joked the ceremony was known at his
house as Passover. Many LGBT and black
lmmakers could say the same this year.
Although 2015 was a great year for
LGBT movies, when the nominations for
the 88th annual Academy Awards were
announced, queer lms were more likely
to be on the snubbed list than included
among the nominees.
When the nominations were broadcast
last week, movie audiences were
surprised they were dominated by three
spectacular but rather conventional
genre movies: The Revenant with 12
nominations, Mad Max: Fury Road
(10) and The Martian (seven). Like the
Academy itself, the list of nominees is
overwhelmingly straight, white and male.
Most notably, not one of the 20
nominations for acting went to people
of color. In a rather bizarre scenario,
Sylvester Stallone received a sentimental
nomination
for
his
supporting
performance in Creed, the well-received
Rocky sequel, although writer/director
Ryan Coogler and lead actor Michael
B. Jordan (both African American) were
overlooked. Likewise, the only nomination
for the Ice Cube biopic Straight Outta

Compton was for its white screenwriters
Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berlo. .
Most surprisingly, Star Wars: The Force
Awakens which smashed box oce
records, received strong reviews and
featured excellent performances by a
diverse cast, only received ve nominations
for design and technical awards. It was not
nominated for Best Picture, Best Director
or Best Original Screenplay or in any of the
acting categories.
On the LGBT front, critical and
audience favorite Carol received
six nominations. Cate Blanchett was
nominated for Leading Actress, although
her co-star Rooney Mara was nominated
in the Supporting Actress category (the
result of a cynical but strategic Oscar
campaign by the Weinstein Company).
Other nominations went to Phyllis Nagy
(Adapted Screenplay), Carter Burwell
(Score), Ed Lachman (Cinematography)
and Sandy Powell (Costume Design).
In a surprising move, the lesbian
romance did not receive a Best Picture
nomination, even though the Academy
only nominated eight movies for the 10
potential slots. Openly gay director Todd
Haynes was also snubbed.
The Danish Girl received four
nominations. Eddie Redmayne (who won
the Oscar last year for his performance
as Stephen Hawking in The Theory
of Everything) was nominated in the

Leading Actor category, but his co-star

Alicia Vikander was nominated for the
Supporting Actress award (also the result
of a studio campaign). Eve Stewart and
Michael Standish were nominated for
Production Design and Paco Delgado was
nominated for Costume Design. Director
Tom Hooper and Screenwriter Lucinda
Coxon were not recognized and the lm
did not receive a Best Picture nomination.
Other LGBT movies fared even worse.
Even though Best of Enemies was shortlisted in the Best Documentary category,
it did not receive a nomination. Likewise
Viva and The Club, both of which were
short-listed for Best Foreign Language
Film, were shut out.
Even more disappointing, Tangerine
failed to receive any nominations, even
though it was included on more than 60 top
ten lists by national critics, ranking higher
on Metacritics summary list than The
Revenant and The Martian. Director Sean
Baker and his talented production team were
completely shut out, despite their innovative
and highly praised use if iPhone video
technology. Despite the buzz surrounding
her breakout performance, trans performer
Mya Tayler went unrecognized.
Other LGBT artists who went unnoticed
by the Academy include Andrew Haigh
(director of 45 Years) and Lily Tomlin
(Grandma).
There is, however, one category that is
dominated by LGBT artists: Best Original
Song. In a historic move for Oscar voters,

transgender musician Antony Hegarty
is nominated for her lyrics for Manta
Ray from the little-known documentary
Racing Extinction, about activists trying to
save endangered species from extinction.
Hegarty, lead singer for Antony and the
Johnsons, is only the second known trans
artist to be nominated for an Oscar. She
follows in the footsteps of Angela Morley
who was nominated for The Slipper and the
Rose (1976) and The Little Prince (1974).
In addition, openly gay singer Jimmy
Napes and his straight writing partner
are nominated for Writings On the Wall,
the theme song from the latest Bond ick
Spectre. Lady Gaga and Diane Warren
are also nominated for Til It Happens
to You from The Hunting Ground the
hard-hitting documentary about rape on
college campuses.
Finally, Spotlight, which did feature a
powerful performance by Michael Cyril
Creighton as a gay survivor of clerical
abuse, was nominated for six awards,
including Best Picture, Best Director and
Best Original Screenplay.
While the disappointing lack of diversity
among the nominees may take some
of the luster away from the so-called
gay high holy day, there are still some
excellent LGBT lms and nominees to
cheer on when the Academy Awards are
presented on Feb. 28 (while you tweet to
#OscarsSoWhite).

BLADE: Did you ever sing to her

accompaniment tracks in church?
Remember those tapes you used to be
able to get from Christian bookstores?
CHENOWETH: Are you kidding, that
was my orchestra. I say in my concert we
had these little square things that we put
in big machines we got from RadioShack.
Thats how I got my music theater,
opera, pop. It was all from tapes.

Its a cliche, but Kristin Chenoweth
needs no introduction.
Next weekend, the Tony-winning
legend brings her Coming Home Tour
to the Strathmore. We caught up with her
by phone from New York.
WASHINGTON BLADE: Youve been
on the road with this show but it sounds
like the Strathmore show will be a little
dierent.
KRISTIN CHENOWETH: Yes, Im
probably doing some new stu at the
Strathmore including some stu by
Andrew Lippa, stu weve been working
on with his opera I Am Harvey Milk
and a prequel to that that he did for me
called I Am Anne Hutchinson, which is a
continuation of that piece. But Im always
changing it up. It never feels like Im doing
the same show. I have a ve-piece show,
an 11-piece show and an orchestra show
and Im always changing it up and putting
in new stu which makes it fun for me.
BLADE: Do you feel a concert can work
with the songs speaking for themselves
or does the evening have to take you
somewhere? What considerations are you
thinking of when you craft your set list?
CHENOWETH: I never do the same set list
twice because I want to make it special for
each place Im going to. Thats challenging
for me musically and artistically. Sometimes
I wish I werent built that way because Id
love to just park and bark, but I dont know
how to do that. Im currently working on a
couple new songs, a couple covers by some
people we all know and love and theres
certain songs I will do so I dont get shot.
But Im constantly switching it up. I have
a Don Henley song now thats making its
appearance pretty regularly. Dollys making
an appearance, Jerome Kern, goodness,
Adele, Rodgers and Hammerstein. As you
can see, its all over the map but I like it that
way because it challenges me.
BLADE: I know youll be back to the
Strathmore in April for the Harvey Milk
work you just mentioned. How did you
get involved in that?
CHENOWETH: About six or seven years
ago, Andrew Lippa came to me and said
hed written this opera I Am Harvey Milk
and he said, Ive written a soprano role for
you. At that time in my life, I wasnt able
to do it, which is a regret of mine. I really
wish I could have. They came to me again

later and once again I couldnt do it, I was in

L.A. But the third time, they did it last year
at Lincoln Center and I said, Im available
and Im making it work. Then Andrew
told me he was working on a prequel on a
woman named Anne Hutchinson who was
basically persecuted for being a thinking
Christian woman. I loved the idea and the
story. She had a lot of things going on in
her life and she was judged and in some
ways, I can relate. We started learning that
actually yesterday and one song I may put
in my solo show at the Strathmore. Andrew
Lippa has been a huge part of my history
and Ive been somewhat of a muse for him
and what can I say, I fall in love with his
music every time he plays so Im honored
hes written yet another thing for me.
BLADE: Youve spoken of how (gospel
singer) Sandi Patty is one of your heroes
and inspirations. What was your favorite
Sandi Patty album when you were
growing up?
CHENOWETH: Her hymns collection.
Especially her version of It is Well With
My Soul. I do one of her songs in my
show and I love so many songs shes done
Love in Any Language, Via Dolorosa,
there are so many that I grew up listening
to and I have the utmost respect for her. In
fact we just sang together in Indianapolis.
She sang For Good with me and it was a
full circle moment because she was such a
huge inuence on my life so to get to sing
with one of your idols, thats pretty cool.
BLADE: You have a masters degree

in opera yet it sounds like most of your
inuences were Broadway, pop and
gospel. Would you have been happy with
an opera career had things worked out
that way for you?
CHENOWETH: I think I would have
been happy no matter what because Im
one of those people who once I make a
decision to do something, I pretty much
dont look back. But I think one of the
reasons that musical theater ts me so
well is that Im an actor rst. Not that
opera singers arent, so many of them
are, but what I love is character and
character development and creating new
roles, thats what I love to do. It could be
on lm, television or whatever. I didnt
want to live in just one arena.
BLADE: Obviously you use your upper
register all the time but some would say it
would enjoy a fuller expression, perhaps,
in opera. Have you ever thought about
doing a classical album?
CHENOWETH: All the time. I would
love to revisit some of the arias that were
challenging for me and fun when I was
starting out. Every once in awhile I do
one in my show, so thats not out of the
complete realm of possibility.
BLADE: Lots of people can sing pop but
not just anybody can do opera and you
obviously could.
CHENOWETH: Amen, brother.
BLADE: Did you have any reservations
about playing Malecent (in last years
Descendants for the Disney Channel) so
shortly after the Angelina Jolie movie or
was that a non-issue?
CHENOWETH: I knew the style and the
way we were gonna shoot it, I knew the
tone would be completely dierent so
no, I didnt have any trepidation. I mean
look, Angelina and I couldnt be any more
opposite. Her one leg equals my entire
body. She is an incredible actress. My
Malecent was for the Disney Channel and
she sings, so I knew it would be dierent.
BLADE: Anytime push has come to
shove between the evangelical Christian
world and the gays, youve always
come down on the side of the gays and
sometimes paid a price for it. Sometimes
it seems like the ice is thawing a little but

other times it seems both politically and
religiously things are becoming more
polarized. Will evangelicals ever come
around on gay issues?
CHENOWETH: Oh, I hope so. You know,
I say in my concerts and its true, I say, I
always gotta do a Jesus song because Im
a Christian. As an artist and as a person,
thats a big part of who I am but another
big part of who I am is a gay rights lover
and that doesnt always go hand in hand
as you know. Thats not something that
people necessarily agree with but as I
always say, and I really mean this, I dont
want to be judged for what I believe, I just
want people to enjoy my music. What
would make me happy is if there was
more acceptance and tolerance and love,
not just to the gay community but to the
Muslim community, to any community
of people who are considered outcasts
or not the quote-unquote norm. I just
try to do what Jesus would do. I dont
always succeed. I have a lot of faults
but I approach things from a love place
and not a hate place so I hope we keep
heading in that direction on this issue.
BLADE: Speaking of gospel singers, is
it true that you once sang the Evie song
Four Foot Eleven at a Baptist convention
when you were 12?
CHENOWETH: You bet, that was one
of the rst songs I ever sang. If Id known
that was all the taller Id get, I might have
sung something else. Evie was also a
huge musical inuence on me growing
up. You have to understand, music and
church sort of for me went together and
Evie Tornquist is somebody who still to
this day, I wish I could just do an album of
her and Sandi. I just loved her. She sang
another song, Live for Jesus/thats what
matters/when other houses crumble
mine is strong/live for Jesus/thats what
matters/that you see the light in me and
come along. Those are the things that
have kept me going.
BLADE: She was huge in the 70s, but
today a lot of people dont know her.
CHENOWETH: In my world growing
up in Tulsa, everybody knew her. I think
she is literally an angels voice on earth.
Just like I view Eva Cassidys voice, Renee
Fleming, Dolly, Judy, Julie, Sandi, Barbra
theyre all there and theyre all angels. To
me, thats how I imagine heaven and its a
place I cant wait to sing.

Actor Massey shines

in multiple roles

On the heels of the latest Power Ball
hoopla, its not hard to imagine what
some people might do to gain a lifechanging windfall. For Monty Navarro
the Edwardian bounder in the darkly
delightful musical comedy A Gentlemans
Guide to Love & Murder, that means
killing the relations that stand between
him and the family fortune.
Written by Robert L. Freedman (book
and lyrics) and Steven Lutvak (music and
lyrics), Gentlemans Guide is based on
Roy Hornimans 1907 novel, also the
source for the British lm Kind Hearts and
Coronets. Like the 1949 lm in which Alec
Guinness famously played many roles,
the musical requires one actor to play all
the members of the doomed aristocratic
DYsquith (pronounced DIE-squith) clan.
On Broadway, actor Jeerson Mays was
awarded a Tony for his eorts and now
John Rapson is giving a tour de force comic

performance in eight parts at the Kennedy
Centers Eisenhower Theatre.
The play unfolds in retrospect. Awaiting
trial for murder, Monty Lord Montague
DYsquith Navarro, Ninth Earl of Highhurst
(the appealing Kevin Massey) reviews what
landed him behind bars. He recounts,
one by one, how he rather ingeniously
murdered his eccentric relations in
pursuit of money and love. Just two years
earlier, the Ninth Earl was plain old Monty
Navarro, a young Londoner mourning
the death of his mother, a hardworking
charwoman, when old family friend, the
scheming Miss Shingle (Mary VanArsdel),
stops by with interesting news. It seems
Montys late mother was a member of the
enormously rich and noble DYsquith line,
but because she married Montys Castilian
musician father, she was disinherited and
shunned by the family.
Once aware that he is a distant heir to a
large fortune, Monty sees an out from his
threadbare existence and a way to secure
the heart of his gold-digging girlfriend
Sibella Hallward (Kristen Beth Williams).
Wasting no time, he sets to meeting and

murdering his newfound kin.
As Monty edges closer to his honeypot,
his circumstances improve. The Lord
Asquith DYsquith, whose son Monty has
quaintly killed on holiday, hires him as a
stockbroker at a good salary. Monty keeps
the now-married Sibella as his mistress
and becomes engaged to his cousin
Phoebe DYsquith (the excellent Adrienne
Eller), whose brother he has handily
bumped o.
Montys new romantic
arrangement is shown musically with Ive
Decided to Marry You.
And like Sondheims Sweeney Todd,
Gentlemans Guide toys with the joys
of serial murder for prot. But Monty
is undeniably likable and his victims
are a thoroughly disagreeable lot of
privileged twits and stued shirts blocking
his shortcut to happiness. The scores
pleasant music is overshadowed by its
clever lyrics. Lady Hyacinth DYsquith sings
of her travels: It cant take long to learn
their mother tongue/of words they have
but six/and ve of them are clicks/and all
of them are dierent words for dung.
Gentlemans Guide is a witty romp,

rife with twists and turns. The cast is
superb. Rapsons terric turn as eight
DYsquiths include stock characters of
day including the lord of the manor, a
bosomy do-gooder, the clergyman, a bad
actress, a bodybuilding eugenicist and a
fey beekeeper.
Director Darko Tresnjak leads an
especially able design team. Alexander
Dodges set a riotously colored musical
hall proscenium pops marvelously
in contrast to costume designer Lindo
Chos beautifully rendered Edward Gorey
mourning weeds. Aaron Rhynes amusing
projections include a moving swarm of
killer bees, a frozen pond, a bell towers
dangerously endless stairway and other
wonderfully lethal images.

Annual benet attracts

top regional chefs

Even celebrated chefs can be strongarmed by other celebrated chefs.
When legendary chef Alice Waters called
D.C.s equally legendary Joan Nathan prior
to the 2009 Inaugural festivities to propose
a fundraiser that would benet local
organizations that provide critical services
to the hungry in Washington, Nathans
answer was unequivocal.
When Alice calls, says Nathan, the
cookbook author and television host
known for her exploration of Jewish
cuisine, you dont say no. But I would have
said yes anyway. Working with Waters,
who spurred the organic foods revolution
more than 40 years ago at her Berkeley,
Calif., restaurant Chez Panisse, Nathan,
along with D.C.s own Jos Andrs, is cohosting the eighth annual Sips & Suppers,
taking place this weekend: Saturday, Jan.
23 at the Newseum and Sunday, Jan. 24 at
private homes across the area to benet
Marthas Table and D.C. Central Kitchen.
While there are a lot of fundraisers
on any given day in D.C., Sips & Suppers
oers an opportunity to participate in
something that has an enormous impact
on the community, according to Mike
Curtain, CEO of D.C. Central Kitchen,
which dishes out 5,000 free meals daily
to local homeless shelters, transitional
homes and nonprot organizations, as
well as another 4,300 school meals each
day to low-income D.C. schoolchildren.
This is the power of food, Curtain says.
The humanity we share is so much more
powerful than what separates us.
For many people who once beneted
from fresh hot meals prepared by the
sta and volunteers of Central Kitchen,
its Culinary Job Training Program is the
next step toward independence. Since
1990, nearly 1,400 students have come
through the 14-week program, which also
provides internships and job placement
in the community. Speaking to a group of
visitors in early January, Earl, a graduate
of the program who now works at D.C.
Central Kitchen, spent 13 years in prison
seven of them working in the prison
bakery and found out about the

training program through a job fair after
he was released.
I love my job, he says, and I can
honestly say that I appreciate my time
incarcerated because it got me to where
I am now.
Marthas Table, which has been operating
out of a storefront on the 14th Street
corridor near Logan Circle for 35 years, was
originally founded by Dr. Veronica Maz and
Father Horace McKenna to provide a safe
haven and healthy meals for local children.
The program has expanded over the
years to include McKennas Wagon, which
distributes hot meals and sandwiches to
the homeless every day at three locations
across the city, and Joyful Markets, bringing
fresh and healthy food to 12 schools in
wards 7 and 8, where families can ll
grocery bags with 23 pounds of food per
enrolled child to take home. Working with
the Capital Area Food Bank, the goal is to
have these monthly markets at every public
and charter school in those wards, for a
total of 44 markets.
One in three children in D.C. are
food insecure, says Patty Stonesipher,
president and CEO of Marthas Table, and
one in two east of the (Anacostia) river.
Most hunger is happening in apartments,
homes and households. She welcomes
the opportunity to work with local
organizations to combat hunger, saying,
Collaboration is the new competition in
the nonprot world.
With $600,000 raised at last years event,
Sips & Suppers will have a big impact on
the programs oered by Central Kitchen
and Marthas Table. The Sips event on Jan.
23 features craft cocktails and tasty bites,
from charcuterie to macarons, from some
of D.C.s best bars and restaurants, including
Bualo & Bergen, Ghibellina, Mango Tree,
Red Apron, SER, and Tabard Inn, all served
at the Newseum at $125 per person.
The Suppers, which provide an opportunity
to get more up close and personal with some
of the best chefs from both D.C. and around
the country, are a more intimate aair hosted
in private homes.

Every day, you try to catch a little news.

It might be online, maybe in a newspaper,
magazine or on TV, but youre a smart kid
and you like to stay informed. Lately, youve
been hearing a lot about gay rights and
gay marriage, and you want to know more.
Read Gay & Lesbian History for Kids by
Jerome Pohlen and your questions might
be answered.
Knowing someone whos LGBT is
nothing new; in fact, history indicates that
our earliest ancestors acknowledged and
were comfortable with LGBT people.
Homosexuality appears in mythology,
royalty, battleelds, art (Michelangelo
and Leonardo da Vinci were said to be
gay), and in some religions. In North
America, many beloved 19th century
authors, poets and songwriters were gay
or lesbian, and Native American culture
embraced people who were of twospirits. Transgender individuals fought in
the Civil War or were pioneers or settlers.
We know that LGBT individuals existed
elsewhere and at other times, too,
because laws were made against them.
That was especially true through the
early 1900s. Though we entered the
progressive era in the beginning of the
century, it was anything but progressive
for people who were gay. When the
country was stricken by the Great
Depression in the 1930s, things got even
worse for the LGBT community and
many people had to hide their lives from
general society.
In some ways, things got better during
World War II. The government needed
military personnel and LGBT individuals,
like everyone else, needed jobs, so they
signed up in droves to ght for their
country. Very few were denied a chance
to serve but, sadly, after the war was over,
many gay and lesbian personnel received
blue discharges, and were denied
veterans benets. Once again, LGBT
individuals needed to closet themselves.
Not doing so could mean arrest or worse.
And then, nally, things started to turn
around. Activism in the 1960s and 70s
helped the LGBT community gain rights
and support on other issues, unfair laws
were changed and many people helped
make things get better.
I struggled with Gay & Lesbian History
for Kids, but not for the reasons you
might think. My biggest issue comes
with its potential audience, vis--vis the
content: mainly, that it contains either
a lot of very advanced information for
kids who are young enough to be excited
about the 21 Activities here; or a lot of
silly, juvenile activities for kids who are
old enough to handle more advanced
information. Then, too, the presence of
said activities may be moot, since they
mostly had little to do with LGBT history.
Conversely, and to the positive, I
appreciated the pre-20th century info
that author Jerome Pohlen oers; it was
interesting, but is it enough to save this
book? I dont know. The target audience
here is 9 and up, which I think is way too
young. Fresh-eyed 12-to-15-year-olds
may appreciate whats inside Gay &
Lesbian History for Kids, but hand it to
a reader over 16 and the news probably
wouldnt be good.

at the 9:30 Club in 2008 in support of
their comeback album, Funplex.
Passion Pit, whose lead singer Michael
Angelakos is gay, performed on June 3,
2010. Not long after, gay pop sensation
Adam Lambert played on June 28, 2010,
in support of his debut album For Your
Entertainment.
Electric pop/rockers Neon Trees,
whose lead singer Tyler Glenn is gay,
performed at the club in July 2010, just
as their single Animals was becoming a
major hit.
In November 2012, Macklemore and
Ryan Lewis performed their massive hit
Same Love in support of same-sex marriage.
Visionary hip-hop artist Frank Ocean,
who had recently revealed same-sex
attraction and wrote about unrequited
love for a man in the stunning track
Bad Religion, performed at a show
surrounded by buzz on July 23, 2012.
Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter
John Grant, whose lyrics are sometimes
startlingly
confessional
and
selfdeprecating, graced the 9:30 Club stage
on May 11, 2014.
Atlas Sound, led by openly gay
Bradford Cox, has appeared multiple
times. Local D.C.-area genre-bending
powerhouse Meshell Ndegeocello has
also graced the 9:30 Club stage.
The amboyant and always entertaining
Scissor Sisters, featuring three gay
members (Jake Shears, Babydaddy and
Del Marquis) became a xture at the club
as they performed eight times between
May 2004 and July 2012.
Kele Okereke, the talented frontman

for Bloc Party, has appeared both with
his band and as a solo artist.
Widely renowned lesbian duo Indigo
Girls played at the club in March 2005.
The wonderfully outlandish and always
memorable Canadian artist Peaches rst
appeared at the club in November 2006.
Against Me! rst performanced at the
9:30 Club on Nov. 12, 2007. This was, of
course, before Laura Jane Grace came
out as a trans woman in 2012, as detailed
in the bands stunning 2012 album
Transgender Dysphoria Blues (theyd
play two dates in September 2014 after
Graces transition).
Mika, the uber-creative openly gay
British pop experimentalist, played on
June 12, 2007.
Hercules and Love Aair, whose
breakthrough hit Blind is about coming
out as gay and then losing yourself in a
world of endless hedonism, performed in
November, 2008.
The lesbian country/folk/rock singer/
songwriter Brandi Carlile, who released
the stunning album The Firewatchers
Daughter last year, played the club in
October 2009, the same night at the
electrifying new wave revivalists Gossip,
led by the amazing Beth Ditto who has
referred to herself as a fat, feminist
lesbian from Arkansas.
Other
notable
appearances
by
LGBT artists include Ani DiFranco
(whos identies as bisexual), who rst
performed at the club in 1990 and has
made many stops since, the most recent
being in November 2013 and with another
show coming up on Jan. 26.
A month and a half after the release of
their breakthrough album Dookie, Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees Green
Day (led by openly bisexual frontman
Billie Joe Armstrong), played their rst
9:30 Club gig on March 15, 1994.
British alt-rockers Placebo (vocalist
Brian Molko is bisexual, guitarist/bassist
Steven Olsdal is openly gay) performed

at the club in December 1998 in support
of their classic album Without You Im
Nothing. Skunk Anansie, led by the
dynamic bisexual vocalist Skin, played in
September 1999.
Indie
darlings
Sleater-Kinney,
featuring bisexual vocalists Corin Tucker
and Carrie Brownstein (who once dated),
played the 9:30 Club in May 2000 and
then again in September. A month later,
openly gay leather-clad metal icon Rob
Halford of Judas Priest fame rocked the
club with his band Halford.
Critically lauded Icelandic band Sigur
Rs, whose amazing lead singer Jnsi is
openly gay, rst performed at the club
in September 2001. Jnsi would play
a couple solo dates in 2010. The 9:30
Club hosted synthpop legends Soft Cell,
featuring pioneering gay artist Marc
Almond, in 2002 when they toured in
support of their nal album Cruelty
Without Beauty.
Tegan and Sara, the openly gay duo of
Canadian twin sisters, rst appeared at
the club in October 2002.
The 9:30 Club has also hosted other
events, including RuPauls Drag Race:
Battles of the Seasons in March 2015.
The club frequently has gay-themed
dance parties in conjunction with Capital
Pride every year.
And of course, getting back to Bob
Mould, the alternative rock titan
teamed up with DJ/producer/musician
extraordinaire Rich Morel who at last
count has an astonishing 25 No. 1 singles
on the Billboard Dance Chart to his credit
for the Blowo dance party, which
started small in the clubs back bar and
turned into a mega event that eventually
traveled to other cities. Morel cites the
9:30 Club as essential to Blowos success.
The 930 club was Blowos home
base, he says. When Blowo expanded
and started doing shows around the
country the vibe and mood we had built
at the 930 was what we brought with
us. The sta was so great and the space
made for many memorable nights.
He also fondly recounted for us the
time a certain Lady Gaga came to see
Blowo in all its glory.
I had rst met Lady Gaga when I was
touring with Cyndi Lauper, Morel says.
Gaga opened a show we were playing in
San Francisco. Gaga was just starting out
and we chatted a bit and exchanged info.
Fast forward a couple years and shes the
biggest thing on the planet. I got a text
message from her PR guy that she was in
D.C. and wanted to come down to Blowo.
It was a crazy night. She arrived with a
security crew all dressed in Armani. We were
hanging backstage and she burned a CDR of

her new song, which was not released yet.
She said the song was delicious and asked
if I would debut it. It was Bad Romance. I
played it during my set while she stood and
waved at the crowd from the balcony. It was
a surreal pop moment that I was delighted
to be a part of.
There is no question that if the 9:30
Club walls could talk, the stories they
could tell would ll volumes. So many of
the biggest artists in rock history have
performed at the club that its hard to
keep track, and that includes many LGBT
artists as well. Its been an impressive 35year run for the club, with lots of rock n
roll memories made along the way.
Blade, 9:30 neighbors

at former location
For a few years in the 1980s, the
Washington Blade was a neighbor
to the 9:30 Club at its original F
Street location.
Although the Blade sta
especially on production night
deadlines sometimes worked
late, long-time employees say the
two entities had no major issues.
We would of course work
later hours back then, says Phil
Rockstroh, a long-time Blade
staer. Everything was typeset
and done by hand without
computers and fax machines so
getting through deadlines was
much more time consuming.
He says the noise wasnt a
problem.
It wasnt too bad as older
buildings were constructed more
solidly, Rockstroh says. There
was only one entrance to the
building and you entered so far to
the elevator that went up to the
other oors and then continued
down the hall to the entrance
to the 9:30 Club. Frequently at
night if I was coming or going,
there were people spilling out the
doors.
Despite the proximity, Rockstroh
says he only remembers going
to a concert there once to see a
punk showcase with a former coworker, the late Lyn Frizzell.
The Blade has always had a
friendly relationship with the 9:30
Club, he says.

D.C. an unaffordable place to rent

Its easier to buy a home
than you may think

It is always surprising to me how much
space a renter gets for $2,000 or less a
month. For many parts of Northwest D.C.,
$2,000 a month rents a junior one bedroom. For most places in the country, this
rent is considered delusional whereas it
has become a norm in the District.
The D.C. housing market is one of the
strongest and most expensive in the
United States. With steadily rising prices
and a constant demand for housing, the
market for owning a house is consistently
a great investment. However, the ability
to own carries a high barrier for entry for
some potential buyers (more on that below). Moreover, the market for renting is
a complicated story. Housing inventory
has always been a problem within the
District with a limited supply and restrictions on the size of buildings that can be
developed. As more people move to the
District with hopes of renting an apartment, rents are expected to rise.
A recent study conducted by RealtyTrac
analyzed the rental aordability in most
major urban markets. Aordability was
dened not only by the price of average
rent, but also by the proportion of living
wages necessary to aord rent. The ndings put Washington, D.C. as the second
least aordable market in the United
States (behind only Honolulu, Hawaii).
The study predicts that renting in the D.C.
area requires nearly 60 percent of average wages, which is much higher than
the national average of 37 percent. Moreover, rents are rising at an average over
3.7 percent whereas wages increase only
around 2.5 percent per year.
In 58 percent of the United States it is
cheaper to buy than it is to rent. Overwhelmingly, the D.C. area falls into this category of cheaper to buy. However, many
in the population of potential buyers are
left out of the market because of higher
debts and obligations compared to a
previous generation. For example, a rstcareer couple with a household income
of six gures is less likely to aord their
one-bedroom apartment due to a rent
payment that exceeds their ability to save
coupled with hundreds of dollars a month
in student loan payments. These factors,
along with a higher cost of living in the
District, makes homeownership challenging. This month-to-month cycle of making ends meet without saving for a down
payment creates an environment in which
homeownership appears unobtainable.
What can renters do to escape the perpetual trap caused by high rents? The
answers may surprise you. First, become

informed. Many buyers still believe and

accept that a 20 percent down payment
is required to purchase. Instead, many
lenders now have loan options from no
down payment (like the D.C. Open Doors
program) to just a couple percent. Additionally, renters need to know the benets of home ownership from a taxable
perspective. Property taxes are lowered
with owner-occupancy in the District, and
interest paid on your loan is tax-deductible. These benets are not well known,
and renters should consider speaking
with a nancial planner or loan ocer to
explore these benets.

The takeaway is simple: home ownership in Washington, D.C. is possible. As
rents continue to rise, many renters will be
stuck in a system where they cannot aord
to put money aside to purchase a home.
However, taking the risk to purchase will
prove far more eective than continuing
to pay your landlords mortgage.
