Quando si usa
1. Si usa il Past Perfect per esprimere un'azione che si svolta
precedentemente ad un'altra espressa al Simple Past.
Quando sono arrivata a casa di Susan ieri, lei era uscita.
Sono arrivata a casa di Susan:
devo usare il Simple Past, perch si tratta di un'azione passata, avvenuta in
un tempo passato e finito (ieri)
>>> I got to Susan's house.
Era uscita: Susan era uscita prima che io arrivassi a casa sua, quindi devo
usare il Past Perfect
>>> she had gone out.
When I got to Susan's house yesterday, she had gone out.
Il Past Perfect viene usato per specificare quale dei due eventi avvenuto
prima.
Immaginiamo che due azioni siano accadute nel passato:
I got to the airport. = Sono arrivato all'aeroporto.
The plane took off. = L'aereo decollato.
Qui non sappiamo in quale ordine si sono svolte le due azioni. Ci sono molti
modi per rendere chiara la sequenza, e il Past Perfect uno di questi:
When I got to the airport, the plane had already taken off.
= Quando sono arrivato all'aeroporto, l'aereo era gi decollato.
In questo caso sappiamo che il decollo avvenuto prima: prima decollato
l'aereo, poi sono arrivato all'aeroporto. Questo pu essere molto utile quando si
racconta una storia o si mettono in relazione degli eventi passati.
In qualsiasi punto della storia, si pu saltare indietro in un evento precedente,
e il lettore o interlocutore non rimarr confuso, perch il Past Perfect render
chiaro che l'evento accaduto precedentemente.
When I (arrive) home last night, I discovered that Jane (prepare) dinner.
By the time I got to the office, the meeting (begin, already) without me. My
boss (be) furious with me and I (be) fired.
When I (turn) the radio on yesterday, I (hear) a song that was popular when
I was in high school. I (hear, not) the song in years, and it (bring) back some
great memories.
Last week, I (run) into a friend of mine. We (see, not) each other in years,
and both of us (change) a great deal. I (enjoy) talking to her so much that I
(ask) her out for dinner.
When Jack (enter) the room, I (recognize, not) him because he (lose) so
much weight and (grow) a beard. He looked totally different!
The Maya established a very advanced civilization in the jungles of the
Yucatan; however, their culture (disappear, virtually) by the time Europeans
first (arrive) in the New World.
