QUESTION ONE.
a) Describe the operation of a thyristor.

b) Derive the necessary parameters required to analyze a common base connected
amplifier.

c) Explain how diac is used to protect devices.
(3 marks)
QUESTION TWO.
a) Describe the common emitter connection small signal equivalent circuit.
(6 marks)
b) Describe the operation of a diac.
(6 marks)
c) A thyristor used for phase control is connected to AC supply of V=50sin with
load resistance RL=50. If the gate current is 100A and VG=0.5V. Determine
the range of adjustment of R for the thyristor to be triggered between 30 and 90.
Take VD=0.7V.

d) Define and explain the operation of MOS-Controlled Thyristor (MCT).
(4 marks)
QUESTION THREE.
a) In the CS amplifier of Fig Q3a, draw the small signal equivalent and let RD=3k,
=60, and Rds=30k.
i.
Find an expression for the voltage gain ratio Av.
ii.
Evaluate Av using given typical values.

a) For the CE amplifier given in Fig Q4a draw its small signal equivalent circuit and

Assume the different small signal typical CE amplifier parameters are given by
hie=1k, hre=10-4, hfe=100, hoe=12S and RL=2k.

d) The two coupling capacitors in the CB amplifier of Fig Q5a are identical. Also,
