Mavericks Go Green

Event Name: Quiz Contest January /February


More than 3000 students participated in a twelve-week contest
conducted via Facebook, wherein the participants were quizzed on
facts from the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) report. Prizes,
which included tote bags, t-shirts, and green bottles, were given
out to two winners each week over the twelve- week period.

Event Name: Maverick Experience Fair


January/March
An information kiosk of Mavs Go Green handed out pamphlets,
freebies, and other recycled products whilst educating students on
various sustainability initiatives at the University Center.

Event Name: Earth Day UTA - April


Each year, UTA celebrates Earth Day by giving away
free plants, seeds and recycled products. We
distributed approximately 500 plants in 2014.
Goals Achieved: This event displayed our effort in
promising the younger generation a clean and green
future

Event Name: Earth Day- Texas April


The Department of Sustainability
represented UTA in Earth Day held in
Dallas. The volunteers shared their
knowledge with more than 700 people
and raised funds for our department by
selling t-shirts and giving away freebies.
Goals Achieved: Created Awareness on
UTA sustainability programs and
initiatives.

Event Name: Maverick Activities Fair - August


A yearly event conducted to educate students and promote eco friendly practices to incorporate in
their daily activities. More than 500 students visited the stall.
Goals Achieved: Education and Awareness

Event Name: Ecofest Arlington - September


UTA partnered with the City of Arlington to create an
environmental awareness and build stewardship among the
citizens of North Texas.
Goals Achieved: Assisted the City of Arlington with
promoting their efforts in protecting the environment

Event Name: Global Grounds October


Mavs Go Green collaborated with the Office of
International Education to provide a platform to
students, faculties and staff to informally meet and
greet. Participants were served with cookies, pizza,
nachos, hummus, chai, iced tea and coffee.

Event Name: Family Fun Campout - October


Mavs Go Green volunteers participated in the 'Family
Fun Camp Out' event conducted by the City of
Arlington in Veterans Park, Arlington, Texas. This
event provided us an opportunity to promote our
department and get event sponsors.

to work with the City of Arlington

Event Name: Run for the Environment


October
Mavs Go Green helped to promote the event on social
media like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Goals Achieved: Promoted green events in and
around the city among the UTA community

Event Name: Van Pool Program- October


Office of Sustainability developed a Van Pool program in collaboration with V Ride" to encourage
ride sharing among faculty/staff at UTA.
Goals Achieved: This program would be implemented in Spring 2015

Event Name: National Alternative Fuel Vehicle Day - October


The purpose of the event was to share information about the greener and cleaner transportation
choices available in North Texas.

Event Name: Electronic Recycling - November


This event helped to recycle 3080 pounds of e-waste.
Recyclable Items includedCPUs, monitors, computer
peripherals, printers, fax machines, keyboards, photocopiers,
televisions & VCRs, microwaves, stereos, home & office
phones, cell phones, consumer electronics, printer cartridges,
rechargeable/alkaline batteries.

Event Name: Weight the Waste - November


The aim of this event was to estimate the amount of food wasted
per meal period. 126 lbs of food was wasted in 3 hours.
Goals Achieved: Raised awareness as to how much food is being
wasted per meal period in order to increase sustainability efforts at
the student level.
In the week following the event, students were asked to pledge,
take only what they intend to eat, in our dining locations to
reduce waste.

Event Name: Transportation Services - Survey/Student Feedback - November


The survey was conducted to gather ideas from UTA students/staff to reduce Vehicle Miles Travel
(VMT) and pollution in order to provide better transportation service. 637 responses were recorded.

Event Name: Speaker Session - November


The Department of Sustainability sponsored this
event wherein diplomats from USA and India joined
to discuss the Current State of Indo-US
relations/Role of Academia, which was followed by
lunch. 150 students and faculties attended the event.

Event Name: Recycling Event- College of Business (COBA)


- December
Paper waste of 2450 lbs. was collected from the Department of
Management in the College of Business and was successfully
recycled.
Goals Achieved: Prevented paper waste from going to landfills.

Event Name: Teddy Bear Drive October to December


SHRM Student Chapter and MavsGoGreen co-hosted and donated
1018 soft toys to kids suffering from cancer in 'Project Hope'
organization.
Goals Achieved: Gifted smiles to kids on Christmas Eve.

Event Name: Field Trip December


51 Students from Manara Academy participated in this
program which included educational sessions, visit to compost
site and community garden followed by lunch and UTA
Campus tour for kids in the age group of 8-12 years.
Goals Achieved: Kids learnt about composting, water
recycling, rain water harvesting, and water conservation. UTA
Campus tour and interaction with graduate students from
different course work ignited the minds of these kids to follow
their dreams and ambitions by pursuing higher education.

Event Name: Breakfast with Santa December


Mavs Go Green volunteered for the holiday themed breakfast
organized by Arlington Parks and Recreation center to celebrate
the festive mood of Christmas with Santa. The city appreciated our
support and posted our pictures in their website.

Event Name: Recycling Mania December


UTA is participating in RecycleMania, a friendly competition and
benchmarking tool for colleges and universities recycling efforts to promote
waste reduction activities.

Field Trip to Colorado December


This self-funded trip provided an opportunity to the
committee members and volunteers to experience the beauty
of nature. The members took an active interest in learning
more about sustainable practices by visiting Miller Coors beer
factory and Celestial tea manufacturing factory in Colorado
and wind mill farms in Oklahoma. Among the many things
we learnt, the art of reusing a pack of cards in a Casino for a
dollar in Central City, Colorado was surprising.
