The topic I chose for my English oral today is

Is Caitlyn Jenner really brave and honorable?

Caitlyn Jenner, a former gold medalist, recently made the decision to be undergoing
a sex change in future, but is now a transgender person. After this decision, she was
awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, which is awarded to people who
transcend sports. It is a sports-oriented award, but is not limited to sports related
people or actions. This award was given to Caitlyn Jenner for her bravery and the
honorable decision she made.
Caitlyn Jenner, formally known as Bruce Jenner, was once a member of the
extremely famous reality Television show Keeping up with the Kardashians. His
Olympic past has contributed to his fame, but his fame can largely be credited to
this television show. After his divorce to Kris Jenner, his whole life became a large
part of the public eye. Due to all of this, people think his decision to become
transgendered is immensely brave.
In my opinion, this is not honor or bravery. Bravery is fighting for your country,
risking your life for the greater good. I do believe that it must not have been easy to
become transgendered, but it cannot be compared to a soldiers contribution.
Critics believe that the award should have gone to Noah Galloway, a war veteran
from Iraq. He is a double amputee that lost both an arm and leg in the Iraq war.
Another person who critics think was worthy of this award was Lauren Hill, who
played college basketball, despite suffering from a brain tumor that claimed her life
only a few months later. Although neither Lauren nor Noah received this courage
award, I believe that they are the sort of people that should be recognized for their
bravery and contribution.
Thousands of soldiers fight in dangerous countries such as Vietnam and Iraq, not
knowing whether they will live or die. They risk their lives for the greater good,
never knowing what is around the corner, or if they will survive for that day. This to
me is courage, bravery and honor. This should be recognized, this should be
rewarded.
There are thousands of men and woman that die in the army, serving their country. I
can almost guarantee you that you cant name one of these people that died for the
better good of this world. Their families are left with little, yet we dont recognize
this bravery and courage. I believe doing this is honorable.
There are hundreds of people worldwide who are transgendered or wish to have a
sex change, but cannot afford it. What makes Caitlyn Jenner any different from any
of these other people? They also have had to make the hard life change, but they

are not honored or considered brave. However, as soon as Caitlyn Jenner comes out
that she is transgender; the whole world labels her brave and an inspiration,
although she has not made any contributions to society, nothing that should be
considered brave.
But on the contrary, Caitlyn Jenner could be considered brave as she had to do all
this in the public eye. She had to overcome all of the negative views of family, the
media and the world, and decide to make this life changing decision. She could
either stay she was, or make the decision to be happy.
This also brings up the question 'is this whole ordeal a publicity scandal?
I do not believe that he would make such a serious life decision for publicity, but
many people believe that this was done in order to acquire fame and publicity. They
believe that he wanted to be in the public eye and did something drastic in order to
do so. Many people are generally unhappy and against what Caitlyn Jenner is doing.
A petition has been recently started to revoke Caitlyn Jenners gold medal. There
are over 15000 supporters of this petition. I quote Ms. Jenner (as talented as she is)
claims that she has always believed herself to be truly female, and therefore, was in
violation of committee rules regarding women competing in men's sports and vice
versa. The Olympic committee has now said that they will not be revoking this
medal. I believe that this is correct as he won this medal for his country, and had
nothing to do with his current transgender life change.
Many years ago, honor and bravery had a strict dictionary meaning and that
meaning was accepted by all. For people to be considered honorable, they had to
make a huge contribution to society, and these people were often respected by all.
Intelligence and bravery were what was respected the most.
But in our current age, honor has been stretched. I do believe that people do
deserve to be honored, but I believe that honor and respect should not be so easily
given. Honor is not about one self, honor is selfless.
In todays society, the words bravery and honor has so many broad interpretations.
Each person is raised with a different meaning of these words. So I leave it to you 'is
