WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ARE WE?

Due to the result of Makassar Mayor Election which assigns the

candidates of Danny Pomanto and Syamsu Rizal (DIA) constitutionally as the
Mayor and Vice Mayor of City of Makassar with percentage of win 52%, the
Director of Research of IDEC (Indonesia Development Engineering
Consultant), Rahmad M Arsyad, stated that it had been predicted before that
these two candidates would win. Supported by structure of political and
bureaucratic elite under direction and approach of Ilham Arief Sirajuddin, the
programs created by Danny Pomanto and Syamsu Rizal had directly
increased public credibility on them. DIA is a credible figure with percentage
of credibility above 33.4 %.
Celebes Online on Wednesday (Aug/21th) reported that according to
the survey conducted by IDEC during May to June, only 10,5 % voters voted
the candidates for the premise of their bearer parties. The rest was for the
figure, programs, popularity, social aid (which is always carried out by every
candidate in general), and relativity. This actually implies that the
socialization determines the win of candidates. How frequently a figure
interact and commingle with people (electors) will take effect.
On one side, it becomes natures law that every candidate has to go
through. On the other side, it ignites the conflict among their mass. Conflict
which can easily grow and evolve through primordial aspects such as
ethnicity, religion, or culture are difficult to eradicate. As we know, Makassar
people are known for their insisting attitudes. For instance, an incident which
happened on Monday (June/24th) at a local private TV station. Suddenly,
some guys (in attributes of one of canditates) attacked an informan while he
was on a live political dialogue program. He was punched in his face and
kicked by those guys. Suspiciously, the attack linked to the Makassar Mayor
Elections especially after one of the candidates were considered to betray
Golkar Party, in which he had been in charge of. And a war of nerves on a
Facebook group among the mass of two candidates. They insulted one
another and disfigured their rival candidate. Even though the candidates
delivered good and smart campaigns, on the contrary, their mass did not
seem to show good and smart behaviours. Aside from that, it has to come to
our opinion that politic is a stage which every single actor in it must take
possesion of bad and good way of campaign. That is why black campaign or
money politics have been real issues during the process to elect.

Pustaka Celebes in its second survey during July to August declared

that Supomo Guntur-Kadir Halid (SuKa) and Danny Pomanto-Syamsu Riza
(DIA) competed tightly, followed by Irman YL-Busrah Abdullah, Muhyina
Muin-Syaiful Saleh, and Tamsil Linrung-Dasad Latief. Interestingly, besides
the level of their electability, the respondents acknowledged that the image
of young, clean (no corruption), and religious figures was the answer to vote.
From the data obtained, it was found that voters who voted the image
of young, clean, and religious figures were educated voters. Lowest
education voters were graduates of High School/Madrasah Aliyah. It is
obvious that the higher one's education is, the more selective he will be in
voting. This was different from undecided voters who would apathetically
elect right in the election moment. They were generally less educated voters
(did not graduate from high school / MA) and lived in slum and poor area.
There was even a frankly speaking voter who waited for any candidates to
provide sembako (nine staffs and staples), money, and so on for him. Voters
who voted for the experience of candidates, or for belonging to either the
same ethnicity, the same town/region, or the same school/university, and for
relating and being the neighbors/friends of the candidates have very small
percentage.
Based on the above surveys, we can conclude that we as the people of
Makassar are of many kinds. As elements of the democracy party, we are
supposed to be involved in participating and actualizing the clean and
orderly mayor elections enthusiastically. Unfortunately, not all of us who will
elect have the same vision and dedication. Plural society with different social
status and educational background affect the way of thinking and which
candidate we will elect. To be honest, those with higher educational
background will be smarter voters which have critical thinking and wellformed opinion. While those with lower educational background and poor
condition tend to think about feeding and surviving instead of paying
attention to the political issue. Indeed, the surveys do not present the reality
precisely but they can describe what will happen in the future based on the
scientific process. Gaining the voters opinion earlier can describe their
further opinion especially after the election occurs.
