Preface
The purpose of this report is to explain what I did and learned during my internship period. The
report focuses primarily in assignment handled, working environment, success and shortcomings
that the intern did encounter when handling various tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Because the various part of the report reflects the intern`s shortcomings, success, observation and
comment, it would be imperative that the recommendation are also given. Therefore the report
gives a number of comments and recommendations on the internship program.

Introduction
ASKARI COMMERCIAL BANK
Askari Bank limited works as a unit of army welfare trust was established for the welfare
of army officials. Askari Bank was incorporated in Pakistan on October 9, 1991, as a public
limited company. It commenced operation on April 1, 1992, and is principally engaged in the
business of banking, as defined in the Banking Companies Ordinance, 1962. The Bank is listed
on Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad Stock Exchanges. The bank was declared as BEST BANK
IN PAKISTAN in 2001 in global finance. The Asian Banker awarded twice as Best Retail
Bank in Pakistan in 2004 and 2005. The banks registered office/head office is situated in AWT
Plaza. The Mall, Rawalpindi.
Askari bank limited has expanded into a nationwide presence of over a 100 branches,
comprising commercial and Islamic banking branches, connected online and supported by a
network of automated teller machines (ATMs). It has only once off shore branch i.e. in Bahrain.
Over the years, Askari Bank Limited has proven its strength as a leading banking sector entity
with ever increasing commitment to its clients, through a strategic investment in electronic
technology. It has A1+, the highest possible credit rating, for short-term obligation, and AA+ for

I did my internship Askari Bank, Haider Road Saddar Rawalpindi for a total period of six
weeks. I worked on different departments and sections of Askari commercial bank are as follow:

During my stay in Askari commercial bank I tried my level best to grasp as much
practical experience and knowledge about the working of the banks as I can. The working
experience that I learned during my stay in different departments of the bank is as follows:
Learning in deposit department:
In 1st week I worked in deposit department under the supervision of SIR NAEEM and
MISS ALIYA. There I learned about procedure of account opening, issuance of ATM card and
cheque Book.
The deposit department is divided into following sub-units according to type of activities
performed by them:

The deposit department is the life line of the bank. The core activity of the bank is
performed in this department. The deposit department seeks deposits from customers and used
those funds to lend others and earned interest over lending. The responsibilities of this
department vary from account opening to clearing, remittances, lockers and customer services.
The deposit department offers several types of accounts to customers and ensures their long term
relationship with the bank. Deposit department opens the account of new customer, issue them
cheque books and ATM card to operate their accounts with cheques and through ATM card to get
instant cash.
ACCOUNT OPENING SECTION:
I spend two days of this week in the account opening section under the supervision of
MISS ALIYA. There I learned about the different types of accounts and their opening
procedures.
TYPES OF ACCOUNTS:
In AKBL, there are following types of accounts:

Current Account
Saving Account
Askari Special Deposit Account (ASDA)
Basic Banking Account
Term Deposit Account
CURRENT ACCOUNT:
In current account there is no interest on it. It is for only transaction purpose. They are
paid on demand. When a banker accept a demand deposit, he incurs the obligation of the paying
all cheques drawn against him to the extended of the balance in the account. As there is no profit
paid on this account it is also called chequing account because cheques can be drawn on it.
Current account is mostly opened for business.
SAVING ACCOUNT:
The purpose of this account is to induce the habit of saving individuals in the
neighborhood. The minimum deposit for opening the account is PRs. 1000/-. Through individual
open such account for saving purpose, persons belonging to Armed forces and different military
institutions are free to use this account on current basis.

Askari Special Deposit Account (ASDA):


ASDA Account is an interest bearing current account interest is paid. The payment of
returns is monthly. It is also chequing account because cheque can be drawn on it. It is necessary
for this account that the client must maintain a minimum balance of PRs. 50,000 at the end of the
month. That`s why it is similar to current account. It is mostly opened by business but
individuals to open this account. Tax of 0.3% would be deducted on ASDA if withdrawal are
more than PRs. 25.000.
TERM DEPOSIT:
A term deposit is a deposit that is made for a certain periods of time at the end of the
specific period. The customer is allowed to with draw the principal amount. One of them is
Askari Advantage rate of return on this accounts is set by head office. The term deposit
account vary one month to 1 year for all following accounts:
The amount of profit is given to depositors in three ways:

By Cash
By sending a bank draft to depositors home address or officers or whichever is specified as

mailing address.
The amount is credited in any one of the checking accounts of the depositors.
ACCOUNT OPENING PROCEDURE:
For the chequing accounts (C/A, ASDA, SAVING), there are different types of account
holders are required for all these accounts. The operations/procedure requirement that is needed
for individual account differ greatly from joint account, proprietorship, partnership,
limited company and club society or association as explained below:

INDIVIDUAL`S ACCOUNT:
When a single men or women opens an account in his/her own name and has the right to
operate it is called as individual account.

For literate person copy of national identity card is required as a primary requirement.
For illiterate person and veiled women along with the copy of national identity card requirement
he or she must come in person for opening of account.
JOINT ACCOUNT:
When two or more persons neither partner nor trustee open an in their name is called joint
account. Husband and wife or two persons of same sex can open joint account.
DOCUMENTAITON:
For joint account copy of national identity card of all the person is obtained other things
remaining same as in individual account.
PROPRIETORSHIP ACCOUNT:
When an owner of a firm operating singly, opens an account in his firm name and liable
for all his acts, this account is called a proprietorship account.
DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED:
For this kind of account, an application for opening the account on the firm letter-pad
(having the firm name) is required along with the NIC card of proprietor.
PARTNERSHIP ACCOUNT:
The account is opened in the firm name and all partner designate one two person to act on
behalf of the partnership firmer all act on the behalf of firm. The partner in the partnership firm
are liable for the act of the firm jointly and severely. Even partner has in a firm has an implied
authority bind his co. partner by drawing and enclosed cheques.

Application to open the account on the firm letter pad.
Partnership deed in case registered partnership firm.
Letter showing the implied authority of one or more partners to act on behalf of the firm.
In case of non-registered partnership firm, understanding on behalf of the firm to remain liable
for all acts of the firm.

LIMITED COMPANY ACCOUNT:
This account is for limited companies. In order to facilitate their transaction with outside
parties, banks provide many facilities.
DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED:

Memorandum of association.
Articles of association.
Resolution of the board of directors.
Certificate of incorporation.
Certificate of commencement of business.
N.I.C

CHECK BOOK ISSUING SECTION:


In this week I worked in cheque book issuing section under the provision of Miss
Mubashra. There I learnt about the procedure of issuance of cheque book.
Cheque books are issued only for checking account such as current account, saving
account, and ASDA account. They are not issued for other fixed and term deposits because of
their long term account nature. Requisition slip is required for issuance of cheque book.
Requisition is a request from customer for issuing cheque book. Cheque books containing 25 &
50 leaves are issued to current & ASDA account whereas PLS saving account are normally issue
10 leaves cheque book, however upon specific request of the client, 25 leaves cheque book may
be issued also.
ISSUING PROCEDURE:

Signature on cheque book requisition are verified by matching wit signature on S.S card.
Cheque book leaves number, account number, account holder`s name is mentioned in the cheque.
The name of A/C holder and date of cheque book issuance is written on cheque book requisition

the account-opening officer put his initials on requisition leaves.


A/C number is stamped over the leaves of cheque book and finally authorized person affix his
signature over the debit voucher and the voucher is attached from the cheque book and is handed
over to the customer.
RECEIVING INWARD CHEUES:

Another responsibility and function of account opening department is to receive inward


cheque for collection of other banks as well as AKBL. Then these cheques are sent to clearing
officials who clear these cheques at SBP from other banks.
ATM-I.NET SECTION:
This department deals in issuing ATM-Card, Miss Mubashra deals this department.
ATM CARD:
ATM-Cards are only issue to Account Holders.
ISSUING PROCEDURE:

The person first open the account with bank.


The he fills ATM application form in which name of account holder, father name, account

number and N.I.Card number are mentioned.


A copy of N.IC is also attached with application form.
After completing the process, the application package is sent to head office.
AKBL head office takes a period of 3-4 weeks for preparing and processing of ATM-card. First
list of card holder is issued and then after 15 days card is send to AKBL`s issuing branch, the
card and list are not sent simultaneously in order to avoid any mishandling.
LEARNING IN FOREIGN CURRENCY/ REMITTANCES DEPARTEMENT
In this week I worked I foreign currency department under the supervision of Sir
HASSAN. During that period I learnt about foreign currency account opening, foreign telegraph
transfer, money gram, voucher filling, faxing, etc.
The foreign currency department is responsible for dealing with and managing the [purchase
and sale of foreign currencies. Foreign currency account department of the bank accepts
following foreign currencies from account holders. State bank of Pakistan provides exchange
rates on daily basis. And daily transaction are recorded at their current exchange rate.

The Askari Bank Ltd. offers foreign currency accounts to general public and military serving
persons. The military personnel get special privileges in foreign currency accounts. The military

personnel visiting abroad on peace missions or else maintain foreign currency account with
Askari Bank Ltd.

REMITTANCE (P.0/D.D) SECTION:


PAY ORDER:
Pay order are made to transfer money within the city and this is a safe way to transfer
money as the person who makes the transfer through pay order pays in advance. The procedure
that is carried out in transferring money through pay order is as follow:
PROCEDURE FOR TRANSFERING MONEY THROUGGH PAY ORDER:
The customer will come to the bank and fill in the pat order application, giving in the
details to which account the money is being transferred, the amount etc. and attach a cheque to
pay for the pay order. Pay order can also be made through cash but mainly it is made through
cheque.
The officer checks all the details in the application, make out the changes for the transfer
that the customer will pay and then make the pay order for the customer and pass the following
entry:

DEMAND DRAFT:
Is another way in which customer can transfer money outside the city. There are two
types of situations for transfer of money through demand draft:
OUTWARD DEMAND DRAFT:

When customer comes to Askari bank to make a DD to transfer money outside the city I
known as outward Demand Draft. The customer will fill the details in a DD application form,
and will attach a cheque or pay order cas as he wish. Then the officer will check all details and
make a demand draft for the customer and pass the following entries:

This is the procedure adopted when the issuing branch sends copy of the instrument as an
advice. When the bank receives the advice, the officer will pass the following entries:

LEARNING IN ACCOUNTS DEPARTEMENT:


In this week I worked in Accounts Department under the supervision of Mr. furqan and
Mr. Aftab Rauf. There I learned about voucher sorting procedure according to the accounts
number and checking of activity on daily basis and locker section.

Account Department is another core department of Askari Bank Ltd. Here all the
activities of branch are mentioned, recorded and different reports were made on the basis of data
received from all other departments. The Account Department update the record of day to day
performance of branch such as deposit updates, profit, balance with treasury, expenditure,
employee strength etc.

Following are the responsibilities of the said department:

Checking of activity on daily basis.


Maintenance of SBP account.
Payment of bills to different suppliers/couriers etc.
Depreciation vouchers at end of each month.
Payment of staff salary.
Submission of all relevant statement to SBP/Head Office.
Monthly and Annual budgeting.
DAILY BANK POSITION STATEMENT:
All relevant reports pertaining to the whole day working are printed out in the daily
working procedure of end of day run by the computer department. Some reports in which each
financial transactions either pertaining to customer account or to general ledger accounts is
printed in this procedure are called daily activity reports.
This is responsibility of accounts department to check each transaction made through
computer posting in order to assure that the entry passed in quite right and correct.
Each and every voucher is sorted out and then is placed in the following bunches according
to its nature.

Saving accounts.
ASDA accounts.
FCY accounts.
Head Office Vouchers.
Current Deposit account.
VOUCHER SORTING:

My first work in accounts section was to sort the voucher according to the account
number. The account number contains 12 digits, out of which first tow are branch code, other
two are currency code, other three are type of account, next four are the customer title and the

last one is computer no. e.g. 440101098751 can be an account number. The title of the account
can be read through different codes e.g.

Askari special Deposit Account (ASDA)

LOCKER SECTION:
There are three size of lockers available in the Askari Commercial Bank, large, medium,
and small. Like credits the person who wants to avail the facility of the lockers must have to be
an account holder of the bank. The rates of the lockers vary with the size of the locker. A person
who wants to get a locker must have to come with the copy of ID card and he/she can get the
locker instantly. The bank have two keys of the lockers one is given to the person, who wants to
get a locker and other one bank keeps with it, the locker will only open if both keys of the locker
used at the same time.
TYPES OF LOCKERS:
SMALL:
If customer want to operate small locker then he/she has to pay Rs. 30,000 to bank as a
security this money is refundable and customer can take it back when he will close his account.
MEDIUM:
If customer want to operate Medium size locker then he/she has to pay Rs. 40,000 to
bank as a security this money is refundable and customer can take it back when he will close his
account.
LARGE:
For large size locker customer has to give Rs. 50,000 to bank and this is also refundable.

LEARNING IN CLEARING/ OBC DEPARTEMENT:


In this week I worked in clearing department under the supervision of Sir Umer Farooq
and Sir Adnan. There I learned about inward and outward cheques clearing procedure.
Clearing department is divided into two sub-departments:

Inward clearing
Outward clearing
IBC/INWARD CLEARING:
Inward clearing is an inter-city clearing i.e. the cheques of Rawalpindi city from different
banks like National bank of Pakistan, standard chartered bank, Muslim commercial bank are
deposited here. The deposited cheque is received carefully by checking the title of cheque, date,
amount, and signature on the cheque. All the cheque go to the State Bank of Pakistan. Everyday
NIFT receive all cheques and arranges them. By establishment of NIFT a lot of time, cost and
labor is saved. The cheques are stamped carefully. Two stamps are required on the cheques:

Clearing stamp
Payee`s account will be credited
If any stamp is missed or unclear, SBP returns the cheque with one of the reasons. When the
cheques are deposited they enter all the cheques on the computer with account number and these
figures go to SBP. There are some types of Balances in the computer.

OBC/OUTWARD CLEARING:

Askari other branch cheques (local)
Outstation cheques means different cities cheques are deposited and local means Askari`s
other branches like Peshawar Road, Raja Bazar, Adiala Road etc. are deposited. All cheques

account numbers on the computer and these figure go to SBP. The cheques are cleared in 5-6
days. Because NIFT receive and deleivedred to SBP where these cheques are cleared in 3 days
and deliver to the banks, which mention on the cheques. The cheque require three stamps:

Askari crossing stamp.


OBC number.
Payee`s account will be credited.
If the cheques are returned due to some reasons,a returned memorandum is filled and entries
are recorded on the registor.
LEARNING IN CREDIT DEPARTEMENT:
In this week I worked in Credit Departement under the supervision of Sir Ali kazil Bash.
There I learnt how the banks gives credit to customers, what legal documents are reuired to sign
both by customer and the banker, how the amortization are make in the banks. Before the
sanction of the loan the customer of the bank has to sign four legal documents,documents no. 1,
document 7A, hypothecation documents etc. the person who wants to get a credit from a bank
must have to open an account in the bank that is he must be an account holder of the bank. The
banker keeps the minimum amount of the cheques for selling of the amount of the bank. And
withdraws the amount that is for the installment. If in any case the cheque is not honored, the
banker makes the report to the bank with the help of retail banking.
Lending or financing is one of the basic function of banks of all categories, through
which they exercise najor part of their profitability. So this department deals with the preparation
of proposal of advances, and then submitting them to Head Office for approval and sanction of
limit to the worthy customer, according to existing policies of head office in respect of mode of
financing.

Funded facilities
Non-funded facilities
FUNDED FACILITIES:
In funded facilities the bank actually advances money against further repayment. These
facilities are known as cash credits.

NON-FUNDED FACILITIES:
Non-funded facilities are those in which bank substitutes its own credit for its customers.
Askari Bank Ltd. offers to its customer are large number of non-funded facilities. These facilities
include:

Guarantee.
Letter of Credit.
CONSUMER BANKING SERVICES SECTION:
There I learnt about different types of credit facilities provided by Askari Bank to its
customer.

Personal Finance.
Business Finance.
Auto Finance.
Smart Cash Finance
Credit Card.
MORTGAGE FINANCE:
Askari Mortgage Finance offers the convenience of owing a house of choice, while
living in it at its rental value. The installment plan has carefully designed to suit both the budget
& accommodation requirements. It has been designed for enhancing financing facility initially
for employees of corporate companies for purchases/construction/renovation of house.
PERSONAL FINANCE:
Personal Finance is a parameter driven product for catering to the needs of the general
public belonging to different segments. One can avail unlimited opportunities through Askari
Bank Ltd. personal finance. Askari Bank Ltd. offers unmatched finance features in terms of loan
amount, payback period and most affordable monthly installments. Askari Bank Ltd. personal
finance makes sure that one gets the most out of his/her loan. Once a good credit history is
established, the door to opportunity opens much wider.

terms with the minimum processing turnaround time.
ASKCAR (CAR FINANCE):
As the car financing remained the most attractive product of banking sector in past years.
Taken into account flourishing car financing market Askari Bank Ltd. offers the most convenient
and affordable vehicle financing scheme, which provides its customer an opportunity to own a
brand new vehicle of their choice. The minimum down payment, lowest insurance rates and
widest range of available car makes and models make this product more attractive for the
customer.
SMART CASH:
This personal line of credit would be set up with a specified credit limit up to Rs.
500,000/-

THE PUPOSES OF FINANCING:


The borrower must disclose factual purpose for seeking financial accommodation from
bank without such, the proposal should not be given due consideration:
The possible purposed may be as following:

Export financing/Packing credit.


Import trade financing.
Working capital need for trade & industry.
Fixed investment for industry.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I must recommend ASKARI BANK:

Financial support to the interns. I think that interns would find it a bit easy to afford their meal

while at work and meet their daily expenses.


Emphasizing on excellent services to its customer such as standardized products and timely

fulfilment without distraction.


Hiring a well-trained staff/ experience personnels increase efficiency of work.
Establish a website that is user friendly.
Performance appraisal should be done on a semi-annual basis rather than annual basis.
Conclusions
During my six week stay in ASKARI BANK. I experience the environmental and cultural
gloom of corporate world of Pakistan. I was quite able to understand the operations. I
experienced that the communication is the key weapon of any manger that could lead him to
resolve/explore any conflict/ situation with great ease. Apart from banking operations I learned
customer dealing and maintenance of professional behavior with in the bank staff as well as with
the customer. I learned some key skills of a successful branch manager or a successful operations
manager. I really appreciate the way I have been guided through this internship program.
