National Plastics relocates

Newport depot
The Newport branch of the UKs largest
independent trade counter network has just
relocated.
To celebrate the relocation to
Albany Street Industrial Estate, the depot will
be holding an open day on Thursday 6 August.
With special offers, a prize draw,
numerous promotions and major
suppliers giving live product
demonstrations, plus special
guest Network VEKA ambassador
Steve Davis, it will be a great way
for local tradespeople to remind
themselves just how much National
Plastics has to offer.
National Plastics is renowned for
being a one stop shop for the
trade. Its range covers
ev e r y t h i n g
from

drainage to roofing and everything in between.

Products are available at all price points, so there
is something for every project, no matter what its
scale. Geoff comments, Everyone is very timepressured. Stocking as broad a range of products
as we can means we reduce that pressure a little.
It means customers need to go to fewer places for
their supplies, saving them time and making their
lives easier.
The National Plastics business model has proved
very successful. It has grown substantially in the
past few years, even in the face of the recession,
adding 10 million to its turnover in the last
five years alone. Geoff comments, Our growth
is something we are very proud of. Some of it is
thanks to acquisitions and opening new sites,
but its mainly because we have increased sales
to our customers by offering an ever-wider range
of products, holding huge amounts of stock and
being able to deliver, in many cases for free.
National Plastics is one of the
industrys big success stories
thanks to a simple formula:
give customers what they need.
The open day in Newport will
be an opportunity to celebrate
that success.

European Union In Or Out Poll - The Results

or the past couple of months I have been

running a poll on DGB which has been asking
you guys to vote on whether you would like to
see the UK leave the European Union or not. This
came about after the UK general election results
and after the promise David Cameron made to
hold an in/out referendum before the end of 2017.
So I thought it might be worth gauging opinion
now, and nearer to the time of the referendum to
see how opinions will have changed between now
and then. These are the results of the first poll:

key in the future vote is going to be the floating

voters. In this case there were nine that were
undecided. If all nine decided that they wanted
to leave, the No vote would win. However if only
a couple decided to vote Yes, which is far more
likely, the vote would go to stay in.

This of course isnt scientific, and I wanted to

stick to 100 votes to make the results clear to

of indication as to how the industry views the UKs

Is There
An App
For
That?

ithout wishing to take things to an all

time low, there is a possibility that one
new technological accessory could do
just that the Belfie Stick; so named to enable
people to get the best shots of their backsides in
their efforts for self promotion and adoration.
Not heard of this yet? Well perhaps, social media
has taken a plunge down the slippery, selfobsessed slope or maybe it is a clever tool that
will help to make the selfie stick the must have of
the next generation?
Andy Warhol was considered a zeitgeist and
clearly appears leagues ahead of his time when he
talked of everyone claiming their fifteen minutes
of fame. Perhaps now, social media has taken this
a step further and seen it as an avenue to exploit,
regarding personal fame, with the introduction of
profiles and social pages that seem saturated with
self-adoration in the form of the selfie.
Over the last twelve months, the selfie stick has
become a popular accessory with smartphone
owners, helping literally, to extend the creative
possibilities. After all, its about adding a touch of
personal or humorous light to our every day worlds
isnt it? Sharing humorous anecdotes or personal

positives is surely all about the feel good factor.

As for work, it really can make very creative away
from the office e-messages and will no doubt
evolve further into a clever marketing forum and
extension to social media marketing.
Yet, there are many who dont see it as a positive
thing with an increasing number of global
high profile venues and tourist sites recently
introducing bans. More and more art galleries,
museums, theatres and sporting venues, the
most recent being the Sydney Opera House and
Wimbledon Tennis Championships, have opted to
prohibit its use. Russia has issued official public
health warnings after a spate of tragic extreme
selfie photos led to untimely deaths; whilst the
New York Post recently ran a journalists photo
story of a woman taking a selfie, while Police in
the background were talking a man down from a
suicide bid on the Brooklyn Bridge.
If personalised celebrity has become the ultimate
goal, with up to the minute, individualised
bulletins an essential to our very existence, then
has Andy Warhols message now been morphed
into something quite frighteningly, narcissistic
and self-obsessive? Members of the paparazzi

potential. The modern business appears to be more

about the speed, immediacy and technology rather
than the notion of a work place. As we see business
technologies such as mobile apps advance to
make life easier, the physical administrative office
will become less about where work happens and
more about where workers occasionally gather to
discuss the issues that matter.

Today's always on the clock workforce is never in a

position where it has to miss a beat in or out of the
office. Taking calls, answering emails, conference

possibilities and mobile communication apps

Well, if self-portraits are about self-image and

how we define ourselves, they must also be a
psychological concept of who we are and perhaps
more importantly, who we want others to perceive
us to be.
Human faces have always been extremely effective
attention-grabbing devices. On Instagram, pictures
with human faces are 38 percent more likely to
receive likes and 32 percent more likely to attract
comments, than photos without faces.
Its become somewhat common to think of those
who post selfies as egotistical or vain, but one
great effect of selfies is that they can bolster selfesteem. Therefore, when you consider the working
environment, this has to be a win win pictures
highlighting a promotion, a new invention, a call
to action. Thats great for those within a large
corporation or growing business but what of those
who work alone at home? Smartphones and the
myriad of Apps that come with them must then be
essentials.

So, is it possible that the "office job" will vanish?

Probably not, but a work place could in time,
become obsolete and supplanted with a virtual,
holographic alternative. If thats the case then
viewing faces via a selfie stick will certainly
become more important when creating empathic
business connections.
If the Belfie and Selfie truly take off in the business
world, then it certainly will bring new meaning
to business regarding the term of flexing ones
muscles. Wed love to hear your thoughts, or even
better, see some of your best promotional selfies
which we will profile.

Carl F Group co service attracts

new SalesDirector

aul Simpson has been appointed Sales Director

of Carl F Groupco. Key attractions of the role
reported by Paul include Carl F Groupcos market
leading position, professionalism and total commitment
to service.
In his previous post as Sales Director for Birchwood
Price Tools (BPT), part of the Travis Perkins group, Paul
developed a number of major brands including Scruffs,
Defender and Rhino: while leading a successful team,
turnover during his 18 years employment with BPT
increased from 3m to 50m.
Paul will be active in working with the sales
team to support the companys ambitious
plans for continued growth and market
development. Commenting on his
move to Carl F Groupco, Paul
Simpson said:
The commitment to service at
Carl F Groupco is nothing short
of phenomenal: the whole
company is engaged, each and

contributor to the company becoming a major player in

the UK hardware industry.
The sales team is a significant asset to the organisation
with six members of staff in double digit years of service,
product knowledge is extensive but enthusiasm hasnt
waned. Like the rest of the company, the sales team is
highly responsive - they go the extra mile providing
guidance and support to customers.
At Carl F Groupco, Paul heads a sales team of 14 people
including field personnel, internal sales and Product
Managers. Activities encompass Carl F
Groupcos hardware sales and Carl F
direct, the organisations specialist
tools and accessories division.

o the main taking points this month must
come down to the Super 8s. I myself do not
fully trust this system, but that being said it
is nice for a championship club to test themselves
against Super league opposition on a semi regular

the Championship sides regular games against
top flight opposition. Regular being 4 games in 7

team finishes top they deserve to be promoted and

of the most turbulent months in recent times.
The news that Jon Sharp has replaced Andy Hey
as head coach and some bizarre results on the
field. Meaning that we miss out on the middle 8s.
Something I would have bet money on at the start
of the season that we would qualify for.
As well as all this excitement we have lost (in

the news of Paul Wellens retirement. I know that

team was transported from peak to peak by drivers
Derek Travers from Customade and Steve Fisher from
the Spring Centre.

The 21-strong teams attempt to scale the three

highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales was in
aid of The Spring Centre, which provides support to
the families of children with disabilities and special
needs across Gloucestershire. The 24-hour dash to
conquer Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon was
the brainchild of Nick Gibbons, Customade Group
Operations Director. His 11 year old daughter Niamh,
who suffers from a genetic condition and needs
24 hour care, regularly visits The Spring Centre for
essential respite care.

Rain and snow didnt deter the three intrepid

Customade directors, who, together with nine of
their remaining team members, completed their

The brave adventurers included Nick and his wife

place that is very important to my family. There was
a huge amount of preparation and training involved
and I am so proud of everyone who took part in this

to thank everyone involved for such a great effort

FARMAGEDDON SUCCESS FOR FRAMEXPRESS

ne of the frameXpress team pitted

himself against some extremely tough
farm terrain to raise awareness and funds
for Parkinsons UK. Jason Cartwright, who works
as a supervisor at the company, launched himself
on this hardcore mud run to raise funds for the
charity which is close to his heart.
Along with three close friends, the team hit the
Farmaggeddon track and ran a 10k race where
they had to tackle both manmade and natural
obstacles placed throughout woodland, farm
tracks and grassland. The courses are designed
to give participants the ultimate in running
experiences by physically challenging them to
the maximum.
The four strong team successfully completed
the race and in the process raised 432 for the

from members of the frameXpress team.
Jason commented, The run is extreme and is
physically exhausting but the fact that you are
doing this for a good cause, such as Parkinsons
UK, drives you on to finish. The reason we were
so determined to push on and guarantee to raise
funds for the charity is that is so important to me.
Sadly, my aunt died from this debilitating disease
and a number of other close members of my
family have been diagnosed with it. It was worth
every exhausting moment and it is extremely
rewarding to have achieved such a great result
on the day and in the process helped to raise

'Phenomenal' 13th GM Fundraising Golf Day

ith temperatures in the high twenties,

the July sun beat down on the 13th GM
Fundraising Golf Day at Hellidon Lakes
in Daventry. The annual golf day had confirmed
its status as a must attend event in any glazing
industry golfers calendar, having sold out within
24 hours. Despite the sun, players took on the
challenge of the rolling 6187 yard championship
course, which as the name suggests featured
several demanding water hazards. Many also took
the opportunity to challenge and even beat the
pro on the par 3 eighteenth hole. All confirmed the
quality and toughness of the course.
Gary Morton, founder of GM Fundraising says:
As well as a great day out for all involved with a
superb dinner, high quality raffle, charity auction
and prize giving in the evening, the key objective,
as in everything we do, was fundraising. Were
delighted to say that overall we raised 8,400 for

Pullen won Nearest the Pin. Quickslides Adrian
Barraclough achieved the Best Individual Score
of 39 points with Haffner Murats Dave Thomas
proving how tough the conditions were, picking up
the Wooden Spoon trophy on a countback.
Morton added, Id just like to say a huge thank you

GM Fundraising Border2Border Cycling

Challenge 2016 Launch Promises
'The Toughest Challenge Yet'

he National Velodrome in Manchester

played host to the official launch of the
2016 GM Fundraising Cycling Challenge:
the GMF Border2Border Cycling Challenge, with
proud sponsor, Deceuninck. Taking place over 11
days next June, spanning 2,016 miles between
Vancouver, Canada and Tijuana, Mexico, offering
up 92,295 feet of climbing and temperatures in
excess of 40 degrees, the ride is being described
as the Toughest Yet for good reason.

is one of the Tour De Frances toughest ascents of

more than 5,000 feet of climbing over almost 13.2
miles. There are three climbs on the B2B route that
are bigger than that Mount Ventoux climb. We will
cross seven mountain ranges and much of the ride
will be taking place in the absolute wilderness
of mountains and deserts including the Cascade
Mountains, Columbian Plateau, Sacramento Valley,
Californian Coastal Mountains, the Sierra Nevada,
the Mojave Desert and the San Antonio Mountains
en route from Canada to Mexico. Even excluding

session on the World Championship velodrome
track, we made it clear that riders must be at the
peak of fitness by next June. Without the necessary
advanced training there is no way even an
experienced cyclist would survive this challenge.
Thats why the 18 strong riding team will be
starting now to get under their belt the planned
training of the 2,500 miles target prior to the ride,
including 75,000 feet climbing and at least fifteen,
70 plus mile, rides over the next 12 months. And
lets not forget why were putting ourselves through
this: the fundraising target for the Border2Border
Challenge is 100,000 and with industry support
we would love to surpass this. Every penny raised
goes to Hope House Childrens Hospices because
the riders and support team each cover their own
costs. Were also delighted to welcome Deceuninck
as our proud headline sponsor and with the support
of this leading global brand, we aim to make the
2016 B2B journey a safe and enjoyable experience
for all involved, while ultimately raising much
needed funds for the families looked after by Hope
House.

In Partnership with Deceuninck

Roy Frost, Managing Director of Deceuninck
UK explains his decision behind the headline
sponsorship: Ive known Gary for many years and
in fact when I was at Everest, took part in the GMF
Top2Bottom ride. Thats now a decade ago and
since, Ive been watching how GM Fundraising has
grown and developed to the point where it has
really strong brand awareness across the industry.
Its a great cause and a great charity on a journey
that Im keen to join, so when Gary approached
me about both the potential Deceuninck headline
sponsorship and joining the challenge as one of
the team cyclists, it was an obvious yes. Although
Ive never been touched directly by the challenge
of childrens life limiting illnesses that Hope House
faces every day, interestingly my first ever charity
cycle ride and one that got me seriously into
endurance riding was a London to Paris challenge
for which I raised 7,500 for a childrens charity
called Keech Cottage. So in that respect, its come

full circle. There are other synergies too in that

Deceuninck Belgium is well known for its passion
for cycling so are keen to support the initiative,
and thanks to Dave Broxton who has done the
B2B route planning, we have managed to change
the route a little to take in Reno, Nevada where a
new Deceuninck facility is being opened for North
America. So all in, its a perfect fit and a challenge
that along with the rest of the team, Im looking
forward to although be it with a little trepidation!

MODENA PROVIDES A FLEXIBLE 2ND

TIME REPLACEMENT EXTENSION

ynseals Modena orangery has been installed at a

detached Lancashire home to replace an existing
two-storey building extension and conservatory,
delivering an improved replacement extension which
affords a truly modern and flexible living space.
The aim of this project was to create a large kitchenfamily room in the heart of the house, so the old
conservatory was demolished and the rear wall of the
original extension was removed, allowing the new
extension to project further into the garden patio area.
Key to the design was installation of a Modena
structural orangery with a K2 glazed roof overhead,
to illuminate the wide-spanning L-shaped extension
measuring 7 metres by 6 metres that now combines a
luxury kitchen with a light and airy social space.
Boasting contemporary and linear aesthetic styling, the
Modena is primarily designed for urban townscape and
modern suburban applications, presenting traditional
orangery design features with a modern twist. In
addition to an internal perimeter soffit which is typically
604mm deep, Modenas striking decorative aluminium

32 |July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

fascia is a unique feature, creating an additional

overhanging external soffit which is just short of 60cm
in depth. When designing modern open plan premises
linking kitchen, dining and living room areas, flexible
use of space is essential and Modena can be fitted with
full-width bi-folding doors to deliver just that. For the
bi-fold door on this project, the threshold was built-in
and precisely levelled against the adjacent internal oak
floor, to seamlessly link the inside and outside.
The technology used in the build, including Synseals
exclusive Celsius performance glass, means this
orangery extension is highly thermally efficient and
can be used all year round. The Modena fascia has also
been customised on the side and rear elevations to be
shallow in design with no soffit overhang above window
openings, to maximise daylight. By contrast, the deep
external soffit above the bi-fold door provides effective
shade and shelter from the rain and this design feature
has been enhanced by adding external downlights to
create a magical touch when the sun goes down.

Guardian Roofs Targets 250 Accredited

a new membership drive targeting a total
of 250 accredited installers by January 2016.

leader, I think there are a couple of reasons for the
volume of enquiries we are receiving: A Guardian
Roof has a 0.18 U value which resolves issues with
conservatories being too hot in the summer and
too cold in the winter. The most important part of
replacing a conservatory is to completely remove

Assisted Fit Service proving

real winner for Supalite

oe Leeming Sales Manager for Supalite Tiled Roof System

tells us why the companys Assisted Fit service is proving
such a winner with installers.

As any sales manager will tell you, winning new business in

todays market is not easy; suppliers throughout the industry
are working harder and harder to incentivise their existing
customers to be loyal to them in the long term - and of
course we are no different.
But the fact is that at Supalite we are winning major new
customers all the time our products are technically and
aesthetically outstanding as those of who have looked at
them and installed them will no doubt testify.
We have recently released our new Orangery roof to the
market which has been really well received, and we have
other new product variations ready for market.
But one of our real differentiators is our Assisted Fit service
it is a really simple concept and is proving a real winner with
new customers as well as some of our existing ones. What is
our Assisted Fit service? simply this; when a new customer
takes their first order we offer to send a full installation team
to install it with them so that they can learn on the job from
our experienced fitters. They can familiarise themselves
with all the components and installation methods, can ask
any questions they want to ask, and can learn best practice
there and then on the site.

No call backs from poor installation

It is a service which is especially popular with the smaller

companies and from our point of view it is great that they are
willing to take it it tells us that they are as enthusiastic as
we are about the job being absolutely right from the outset.
Learning best practice at the start can only be positive for
36 |July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

them and encouraging for us to know that things will also be

done right in the future. No call backs from poor installation
will mean better referrals for them and the opportunity for
future business, and it also helps to protect the reputation
of what is still a fledgling sector within the wider industry.
With the market for solid tile roofs still being in its infancy it
is really important that installers understand all the features
of the product as a whole and the installation being able to
offer the Assisted Fit service is proving a real bonus for our
customers and ultimately everybody wins from it.

A real bonus for customers

It doesnt matter whether it is a new-build application or

a retro-fit, being able to offer this service is a real positive
and something which helps Supalite stand out from the
competition.
For us as roof system designer and manufacturer it feels like
there are many great opportunities ahead. The market for
solid tiled conservatory roofs is estimated to be around 1
million and as a sector we have not scratched the surface of
that demand yet.
It is why those companies who have already discovered solid
tiled roofs and have chosen a quality supplier are in such a
great position to maximise the sales opportunities available
and it is why as a company we are continuing to grow.
New products and great service will be the real differentiators
for us and any way we can support our customers to be better
at what they do is a good thing - the Assisted Fit service is
certainly a part of that.

DUTEMANN DOUBLES UP AGAIN FOR 2016 FIT SHOW

et up in 2010 to supply the trade with Schco

aluminium bi-folds, Glide Sliding Doors and
Dutemnn Haus residential doors Dartford, Kent
based Dutemnn has enjoyed remarkable growth ever
since, now producing the equivalent of more than 200
three-panel bi-folding doors every month.
Taking a leap of faith with its first ever exhibition stand
at the inaugural FIT Show in April 2013, so successful
was the event for Dutemnn the company returned the
following year with a stand double the size and has
now doubled that to 48 metres for 2016.
With the addition of Dutemnn Glide-S large panel
sliding doors for 2016 the company needs the space
to show the burgeoning range of folding, sliding and
residential doors, but it would not be sizing up if
previous appearances had not been so successful,
says MD Martin James: We have enjoyed tremendous
success and our appearances at The FIT Show have
played an important part in that, he explained. The

emphasis at Dutemnn is on the highest quality for

products that are in demand from discerning customers.
It has been clear from our appearances at each event
that there is a high demand from visitors looking for
products that satisfy this end of the market, something
out of the mass of standard bi-folds and sliding doors.
Our doubled-again stand for 2016 is necessary to show
our products properly, explained Martin, especially
the new Dutemnn Glide-S sliding doors, which are
capable of spanning an aperture of 6.7m wide by 3.2m
in height in just two panels. They look incredible when
installed.
Dutemnn can be found on Stand 120 at The Fabricator

of the enlarged exhibition space has been sold, some

URBAN REGENERATION FROM FRAMEXPRESS

hen it comes to product performance and

stunning aesthetics, urban regeneration
continues to evolve into a vast arena
where architects and specifiers can blend the best
of both worlds. For frameXpress this has been an
important market sector to consider, particularly
when evaluating climate change and reduced carbon
emissions in relation to buildings.
Most recently a variety of products from the
frameXpress portfolio were incorporated into an
inner city conversion project in London. Here, a
number of modern apartments were developed from
a traditional office block where energy efficiency
and a reduced carbon footprint needed to be key
considerations in the buildings evolution. Products
selected from the range included the highest
performance casement windows and French doors

traditional theme of the building.

For Ian Davis, National Sales Manager at FrameXpress
being able to provide performance and choice are
just two of the key elements that he feels should
be brought together to create successful UK urban
regeneration projects. Today, for fabricators, he
considers it is essential they understand aspects of
the architectural world to ensure that conversion
projects can be highly efficient, stylish and green.
He comments, Being able to advise on the technical
viability of a project regarding clean green and
appealing design is essential, otherwise it could lead
to stylised schemes which quickly lose their vibrancy
and ultimately their future profitability as time
progresses. Everyone discusses performance and
margins but varying styles and design disciplines are
equally important to understand.
Ian also believes that city planners have a central role

to play in tackling urban climate change primarily
because the inner city developments must adapt to
its effects, as the buildings contribute a lot to carbon
emissions, so therefore they are under severe threat
from its impacts.
Climate-friendly planning is growing as the longterm effects of urban spatial policies are now
carefully considered and introduced into industry
legislation. Consequently, green design has become
a key part of helping to tackle urban climate change
and a focus for the frameXpress team. Installing the
right windows, glass and doors such as the products
from the frameXpress portfolio, will ensure that city

Rather than a mono style, varied architectural
styles create character in projects and being able to
produce a range that can accommodate that blend
of architectural disciplines is vital in todays market.

Buildings are among the major sources of carbon

emissions due to energy consumption for heating
and cooling. Special attention should therefore be
paid by fabricators when turning existing buildings
into low-carbon and less vulnerable structures.
Urban regeneration will help in overcoming
building-related challenges, either by retrofitting or

retirement properties offering the best in luxurious

For the framexpress team this required sensitivity to
the needs of elderly residents whilst also offering the
best in acoustic glazing with the apartments being
located close to a main road.
Sarah Price, Commercial Sales Manager advised on
the most appropriate products to install which would
meet the high specifications of the architects and town
planners. The company also offered the long standing
customer a broad choice of finishes and colours to
meet the modern design requirements.
Consequently, the new development incorporated

one of the newest, most sought after residential
developments, in the area the site now offers 51, one

The apartments have been designed with flexible

living in mind, offering the best in modern facilities.
Altogether framexpress manufactured over 190
units for the state-of-the-art project, which included
casement windows and single leaf balcony doors.
Sarah Price comments. Where a combination of
thermal and sound insulation as well as security and
style is required, framexpress is well placed to offer
products and support services that will meet and
exceed the demands of specifiers.
Colours continue to prove popular with architects,
so our range lends itself well to accommodate the
continuing changes in architectural disciplines. Equally
we are aware that on projects such as this, there is a
need to be sensitive to elderly occupants for whom
tranquillity and privacy are essential.

A bird's-eye
review for
Network VEKA
members

here have been a number of trade press articles

recently questioning the validity of company
review websites. The Federation of Master
Builders (FBM), in particular, has called for customers
to be vigilant - in response to an investigation by the
Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
Questions have begun to buzz around the industry: can
homeowners trust online reviews? Can these comments
and ratings be too easily fabricated? Can positive
reviews be promoted while negative comments are
swept under the carpet?
Network VEKA's MD John Ogilvie comments: it may
not be my position to discuss the merits or potential
disadvantages of review sites but it is certainly an
interesting topic, and it did get us thinking about
the options available to homeowners when choosing
tradespeople.
Here at Network VEKA, we began to consider how
many ways there were for people to gather information
about a company, how reliable that information is and what would be the ideal scenario for confidently
seeking out a reliable craftsman.
...Then we sat back and put the kettle on, having done
our bit to solve these problems 20 years ago!
We know that one of the strongest elements of our
offering, is the customer satisfaction questionnaire
that every single homeowner fills out. These forms
come directly back to Network VEKA HQ, not to the

55 |July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

local member company, so we can assess how good a

job has been done in every single case.
We can feed back and make sure the members get
credit and praise where it's deserved, and we can also
speak to members about any areas of their business
that might be improved upon.
It allows us to assess how good a job is being done
by each and every one of our members, and we get
this information 'straight form the horse's mouth' so to
speak.
If we find that a member is no longer meeting the
same high standards that allowed them to enter the
organisation in the first place, they will NOT be allowed
to remain in the organisation.
So, carrying the Network VEKA branding is effectively
like a displaying a badge of honour. Homeowners know
that if they look for the logo - they're guaranteed to find
a craftsman, not a cowboy.
Our strict standards, with constant policing, mean
we can allow all our member companies to offer
homeowners our fail-safe Ten Year Insurance-Backed
Guarantee. This commitment to quality and customer
service has resulted in a collective customer satisfaction
rating consistently at 97% or above, compared to an
industry average of 83%.

First apprentices join the

Network VEKA Academy

N
etwork VEKA's pioneering education and training
offering, the Network VEKA Academy has taken
on its first apprentices after being launched by
the industry's leading installer support organisation
earlier in the year.
Enabling its member companies to ensure that current
and prospective staff have the practical and academic
skills to excel in the industry, Network VEKA established
the Academy in partnership with The Vocational College
an award-winning learning provider with strong links
to the Glass Qualifications Authority (GQA).
It offers a range of training programmes and
apprenticeships, tailored to the needs of Network
VEKA member companies and their staff. Managing
Director, John Ogilvie explains: Our organisation is all
about maintaining the highest standards in systems,
materials, fabrication and installation, marketing
support, training... you name it! With the Network VEKA
Academy we've proactively looked to the future, helping
to make sure that companies under our umbrella can
continue to deliver the 97% plus satisfaction rates that
separate us from an industry standard of just 83%.
The Academy has benefits for everyone involved.
Member companies in light of the widely publicised
construction industry skills shortage need no
longer worry about finding suitably qualified staff.
Those looking to progress within their respective
businesses can do so without disrupting their work,
and, with generous subsidies secured with the help
of The Vocational College costs have been minimised,
making this an inclusive opportunity for all.
Traineeships are proving a popular option, with
companies like MG Windows in Northampton taking
on apprentices in the 16-24 age bracket for brief,
5-6 month courses that offer an introduction to the
industry. Besides footing travel expenses and the cost of
Personal Protection Equipment, for member companies,
it's essentially free!

Network VEKA Academy can only be beneficial for

companies like ours. The more motivated and engaged
in their work our fitters are, the better job they are
likely to do. They are ambassadors for the company,
interacting with customers on a daily basis and directly
influencing their perception of our brand, so, in a way,
the Academy is indirectly enhancing our relationship
with customers.
One of our fitters, David Denness is going through the
Academy at the moment and is really enjoying it. From
his point of view, he feels he has learned a lot more
about the technical benefits of the products he fits
in terms of energy efficiency for example and, in his
words, he feels inspired by the course.
On-site visits and a planned trip to the manufacturing
site go a long way in making employees feel valued
too. We're now in the process of recruiting two new
apprentices and plan for them to be enrolled in the
Academy as well.
Workers with greater industry experience can access
courses up to Advanced Apprenticeship level, with
candidates earning a valuable Level 3 NVQ qualification
upon completion.
John concludes: It's great to see companies getting
behind the Network VEKA Academy so soon. It's through
such installer-centric offerings that Network VEKA
has always thrived and it's clear that this initiative
holds great benefits for the future. I'd wholeheartedly
recommend that members check out what's on offer
who knows what development opportunities it could
one day open for their business?!

Edgetech has scooped a second

Manufacturing Award

dgetech UK, a Quanex company, has scooped its

second award for manufacturing in the Coventry
Telegraph Business Awards within just five weeks
of winning Manufacturing Innovation in Made in the
Midlands. Edgetech has again proved its credentials as
a leading UK manufacturer.
Since 2007 Edgetech has manufactured Super Spacer
from its Coventry base and supports customers who
manufacture over 30,000 insulated glass units per
working day in the UK. In the last year, it has also
expanded its Just Add Glass range of products making
it one of the biggest suppliers of IGU components.
Being recognised for manufacturing excellence in our
home city is a fantastic accolade for the production
team at Edgetech, says John Stark, Edgetechs Works
Manager who collected the award at the ceremony at
the Ricoh Arena.
Manufacturing is at the heart of Edgetech and its
latest product Super Spacer Alpha was highlighted
as an example of innovation in the award. Designed

in-house by reverse engineering its top selling Super

Spacer, Alphas new chamfered shape is designed to
make the manufacturing process easier and quicker
and, at the same time, reduces sealant usage by 20
percent. It has high levels of energy efficiency with a
thermal transmittance of 0.13W/m2K, making it the
best performing spacer bar in the world.
Competition for the awards was high as the Midlands
is the strongest region in the UK for manufacturing,
which makes winning even sweeter, adds John.
At the ceremony Coventry Telegraph editor Keith Perry
said: We have a long history of innovation in the area
and weve been able to prove tonight that firms based
here are still at the forefront of many industries and
creating new jobs and wealth for the people who live
here.

ANOTHER REWARD FOR

ENTREPRENEURIAL FLAIR

olidor and DW3 Products Group CEO, Gareth

Mobley, picked up yet another business accolade,
when he was nominated as a regional finalist in
the highly regarded EY Entrepreneur of the Year awards.
On the night, Gareth walked away with Entrepreneur of
the Year for manufacturing in the North of England.
The EY Entrepreneur of the Year Awards is a major
national awards event, celebrating entrepreneurs
from all industries across the UK with previous
winners including Holly Tucker MBE, founder of

According to Steve Varley, chairman and managing

entrepreneurship, but also builds networks which
span the world. Its not only about winning an award;
its about growing networks, making contacts and
leveraging knowledge. I look forward every year to

Awards

Listers add a Special Award to the Trophy Cabinet

t was a barmy summers night in July when the inaugural

Staffordshire Chambers Business Awards event took
place at the County Showground. Mixing with over 400
of the great and the good of the Staffordshire Business
Community, Lister Trade Frames of Stoke on Trent arrived
en masse ready to battle it out for a new award to add to
their trophy cabinet.
Listers are a company who have proudly traded for four
decades in Stoke on Trent supplying windows, doors and
conservatories to the trade. Throughout their trading
history, Listers have lived by one golden rule, look
after your staff and your staff look after you. And this
ethos helped Listers to scoop what they believe to be
a very special award from the Staffordshire Chamber of
Commerce, the coveted Employer of the Year.
Recognised by a panel of judges, Listers demonstrated
their commitment to their staff by providing exemplary
working conditions, a programme of continued training
and support and an excellent HR programme.
It was a very impressive group of companies that we
were up against, commented Derrith Turner, Listers
HR Director, and that made the recognition even more
special for us. We have won many industry awards over
the years and each one has been of huge importance to
us. But I have to say, to compete against other outstanding
local businesses and come out as winners, is a real coup
for Listers.
What was particularly evident to the judges, was the
way that Listers embraces Apprenticeship schemes and

67 |July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

training programmes. Unlike many businesses who shy

away from upskilling their staff for fear of losing them,
Listers actively support their staff in bettering their skill
sets. We know that a company can only be as successful
as the staff allow, so it makes perfect sense to us to make
sure we have the best people working for us, commented
Derrith, and if you provide an environment that they want
to work in, then you shouldnt have to be concerned about
losing them!
It was also really encouraging for Listers Directors to hear
the judges comment that they were also impressed with
all the people at Listers who seemed to be fully engaged
and enjoying their role. Listers was a nice company to
work for.
Listers have just come off the back of two record years
in 2013 and 2014 and they make no secret of the fact
that their success is down to a collaborative approach to
business. They actively include their management team
and their staff in deciding the best direction for the
business and its this approach that has steered Listers
through economy recessions when other companies have
failed to adapt.
The evening was a huge success and the inaugural
Staffordshire Chambers Awards surely cemented itself in
the awards calendar. Listers would like to thank the team
at the Staffordshire Chambers for organising a fantastic
event and you can rest assured, Lister Trade Frames will
be back to defend their crown and maybe even scoop
another award in the process. www.listertf.co.uk

Introducing Rustique
3 by John Fredericks

fter months of teasers, the #Rustique

hashtag on social media and various hints
dropped by various people, I am now very
happy to introduce Rustique 3, an exclusive new
triple glazing product by John Fredericks.

I was lucky enough to be shown a very early

prototype at the beginning of the year and was
excited by what I saw. At the time it was just a
3D printed version, but after seeing the finished
article that is ready to go into peoples homes,
this is going to herald an exciting new period for
John Fredericks and all of the installers.

Heres the advert

To give you a better idea as to what Rustique 3 is
all about, take a look at this advert:
Triple glazing done properly
The problem for me up until now is that triple
glazing has felt a bit forced. Lets be honest, sales
of triple glazing are not where most expected
or wanted it to be right now. That is down to
there being so few dedicated triple glazing
systems out there, as well as the general public
not having much of an appetite. I dont honestly
believe that most installers were sold on the
idea either.

There are a few dedicated triple glazing systems

out there, but they tend to miss out on one of
the most important factors a home owner will
consider when buying windows and doors
aesthetics.
This is where the team at John Fredericks, in
partnership with Halo, have sat back, soaked in
the feedback from the industry, and went back to
the drawing board to create a dedicated triple
glazing product which would not only appeal to

The main points

There are four main points to Rustique 3 as the
advert above suggests
1. 82mm rebated sash fitted into 70mm outer
frame
2. Full ovolo bead with 44mm triple glazed units
3. Internal flush sash appearance
4. Sealed with 2 conventional rebate gaskets
One of the biggest talking points is the dedicated
82mm sash that fits into a traditional 70mm
outer frame. The sash does the important bit
of holding a 44mm triple glazed units, with the
70mm outer frames maintaining easy retrofitting
capabilities into peoples homes. After the Triple
Glazing Debate last year, we established as an
industry that if triple glazing was going to be
beneficial over double glazing, the units had to
be 44mm. Information clearly observed during

up and down the UK.
The Rustique ranges have been popular because
quite frankly they are the best looking Sculptured
frames on the market, with some of the best
energy ratings and security performance. This is
why so many installers, including myself, have
become so loyal to it. Crucially with Rustique 3
it has kept the aesthetics installers and home
owners have come to love and rely on. But it
now comes with triple glazing that is going to
be genuinely effective.
I see Rustique 3 becoming just as popular with
installers as the first two versions of Rustique
were. I also believe that this is going to be the
product that really kicks triple glazing up into
the next gear and start to shift some units.

Rustique 3 is currently being trialled and tested

Polar Windows has aided the 4.5million

using the Profile 22 FI70 system. Over an 18 month
period Registered Provider and housing management

Rykneld Homes completed a comprehensive
refurbishment on the five blocks of flats (70 homes).
Principal contractor, Morgan Sindall required local

We wanted to secure the future of the blocks through

a long-term solution not a rebuild, comments James
Lindsay, assistant contracts manager for Rykneld
Homes. while also improving tenants quality of
life and lifestyle.
There were a number of key drivers behind the
refurbishment; improving energy efficiency and
reducing maintenance costs were both high on the
list. Energy costs were an issue for many of our
tenants, continues James. Reducing fuel poverty is
part of our Business Plan 2014-17; the improvements
at Stonelow Green go a long way in achieving this.
We were also having to carry out frequent repairs
so low-maintenance, future-proof products formed
GLAZING

to retain this aesthetic, for uniformity across the
blocks, like-for-like replacement would have meant
unnecessary cold spots. We had to design a window
solution which would allow as much of the building
to be wrapped in EWI as possible.
As the tilt and turn windows werent popular with
either Rykneld or the residents, we opted for a 50/50
split casement window with a vertical mullion and
push out window. We also shaved 100mm off the
height simply because window design has come on
leaps and bounds since the early 1990s, and were
able to work with slimmer, improved PVC-U profiles
nowadays.
To achieve the same look we retained a 50/50
window/timber panel composition but rather than
simply fixing plywood panel beneath the window
or skimming plasterboard we fastened the timber
panel to a PVC-U frame with two vertical mullions
fabricated with the Profile 22 FI70 system.
Using a specific screw, (a factor that we had to
stress on-site) combined with Profile 22s recycled
composite material (RCM) reinforcement we were
able to achieve the necessary wind load calculations,
proving that the substrate was strong enough to
withstand the pressures at height and carry the EWI.
While we had solved the issue of the timber panel
we also had to work out how the EWI could wrap
around into the external reveal, continued Rob. For
this we used tanalised timber, this meant that the
EWI operatives could go right into the reveal and
again, eradicate another potential cold spot.

an important part of the specification. The windows

are a good example of this. The original windows
were early 1990s PVC-U. They were side-hung and
very large which meant that the hinges failed. There
were no trickle vents either so that contributed to
some damp issues within the flats.
Polar Windows business development manager, Rob
Hawkins explains how the window solution helped
eradicate cold spots within the building, and worked
with the external wall insulation (EWI) to improve
the thermal performance of the blocks. Our biggest
challenge on this project was the large lounge
windows. A vast PVC-U tilt and turn window had
originally been combined with a timber panel to
create a long feature window. While Rykneld wanted

Stonelow Green residents, the local community and
planning authority to choose a tonal colour scheme
for the blocks. The new windows, in grey, complement
the fresh rendered exterior, a combination of white,
honey and terracotta tones.
We completed the project on time and in budget,
continued James Lindsay. With the regeneration of
Stonelow Green we have improved tenants quality of
life, future-proofed the blocks and reduced our repair
and maintenance expenditure in the short and longterm.

Newell regime doubles up

production
Newell Window Systems
There cant be many occasions in the lifetime of a business when a simple switch of supplier increases
manufacturing output by more than double and improves the quality of the finished product in the process.
But that is exactly what has happened for Watford firm Newell Windows Systems Ltd after taking the decision to
change over to Liniar last year.
Operating as glass manufacturers since 1995, Newell Windows began fabricating in March 2014 and selected a
long established systems house as their supplier.
Right from the beginning we had problems with the quality, explains Ajay Patel, owner of Newell Windows.
We were constantly checking the welds and scrutinising each frame to pass our strict quality controls. At the
time we were producing approximately twelve frames a day, with me having to roll up my sleeves and muck in
on the production line.
Although not looking to change their systems house at the time, Jas Lalli Production Manager at Newell
Windows soon convinced Ajay to talk to Liniar - and he soon changed his mind.
I really liked the product and the quality so I made the choice to move to Liniar, it was the best decision Ive
ever made!
In August 2014, the move began and, much to the delight of Ajay, everything went like clockwork.
The switchover went incredibly smoothly and very straight forward. We received great support from all
concerned, it was very easy all round.
Once we were up and running we soon advanced from producing twelve to 20-25 completed frames a day!
This is with exactly the same staff levels as before and without me having to get involved on the factory floor.
And not only is Liniar much quicker to fabricate, the quality is so much better and the welds are fantastic
were no longer have to spend so much time on quality checks.

GGF 'UNIMPRESSED' WITH CHANCELLOR'S BUDGET

he Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF)

was unimpressed with last weeks
budget announcements by Chancellor
George Osborne.
Nigel Rees GGF Group Chief Executive
commented, It is yet another budget that
doesnt have great significance for our
industry. The bold plans to fund infrastructure
projects with 15b may be positive for some in
construction but it wont have a huge impact on
the glass and glazing industry. We would much
rather have seen that kind of commitment for
house building projects and energy efficiency
programmes that would really attack the
UKs energy efficiency issues and the growing
housing crisis.
In his Summer Budget, the Chancellor
described it as one which puts economic
security first and one which is for "working
people". The Chancellor stated that the
economy is fundamentally stronger and that
living standards are rising strongly. He started
his announcements by calling it a big budget
for a country with big ambitions.
Nigel Rees continued, On the positive side
for SMEs; cutting corporation tax by 2% over
the next five years, increasing the permanent
level of Annual Investment Allowance (AIA)
for plant and machinery and reducing SMEs
National Insurance contributions are welcome
announcements. However, to provide more
term certainty for our industry to grow, theres
clearly not enough for companies to get excited
about in this budget.

throughout the entire speech. Other flagship

policies on welfare and tax took centre stage
whilst the Chancellor George Osborne did
not address key issues for the energy sector
and governmental schemes to encourage the
uptake of energy efficient measures.
Nigel Rees added, It was particularly
disappointing that any plans to incentivise
homeowners to increase energy efficiency in
their homes were not even mentioned in this
Summer Budget. The Governments own target
reductions for carbon emissions are high yet
there seems to be a complete lack of intent to
actually achieve them. It was a surprise given
that the last Governments energy efficiency
initiatives have failed to deliver on the
promises made. There is already considerable
uncertainty on the future of Green Deal and
ECO (Energy Company Obligation) and with no
mention in the budget, it is hardly inspiring for
property owners looking to invest in energy
efficient measures to improve their homes.

The most striking feature of the Budget was

that energy efficiency was not mentioned

GGF ALERTED TO SCRAPPAGE SCHEME SCAM

he Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has recently

been informed of a scrappage scheme scam with
the fraudsters falsely claiming that the GGF offers
rebates for old windows being replaced under Green Deal
and ECO.
Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive commented, To
make the public aware of this scam and to try and prevent
homeowners being duped, we will be issuing a statement
to the mainstream media, Trading Standards and Action
Fraud, stating that; the GGF neither operates nor funds
any such scrappage scheme. We also urge anyone who has
been a victim of a scam or has experienced scam callers to
report them directly to Action Fraud.
The GGF received information of the scam from two
independent sources from a Trading Standards Officer at the
recent Chartered Trading Standards Institute Conference in
Bournemouth and from a GGF Member.
The GGF urges all companies to report any frauds in the
industry by contacting Action Fraud UK in the following
ways. Telephone: 0300 123 2040 (to speak to an adviser)
Via their online reporting tool.
Action Fraud is the UKs national fraud and crime reporting

GGF REACTS AS GOVERNMENT

SCRAPS ZERO CARBON HOMES TARGET

he Government announcement on Friday 10th

July, that it will not be introducing zero carbon
homes in 2016 and zero carbon non-domestic
buildings in 2019, has brought a swift reaction from
the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF).
Nigel Rees, GGF Group chief Executive commented,
Though its disappointing to see the Government
cut red tape in the area of construction and energy
efficiency - where it is arguably most needed - the
initial targets to achieve ZERO Carbon in all newly built
homes by 2016 were always unrealistic.
As part of a range of planning measures announced by
the Treasury, it was confirmed that the Government does
not intend to proceed with the zero carbon Allowable

91 |July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Solutions carbon offsetting scheme, or the proposed

2016 increase in on-site energy efficiency standards.
Officials from Department of Communities and Local
Government (DCLG) have separately confirmed that the
zero carbon policy for non-domestic buildings will also
be discarded as part of the changes.
Nigel Rees added, Rather than new build, the
Government should be addressing the major issue
of increasing energy efficiency in existing buildings
and offering homeowners better incentives to make
their properties more energy efficient. This latest
announcement is not helping construction or the
environment in any way and is merely scratching at the
surface of the bigger problem.

for a new, more challenging dream to begin. Mick quickly got into work to provide for his family &
after 8 years at the forefront of face to face selling decided that in 2014 he wanted to take a more

ales growth in new build and triple glazing

has seen a rapid increase in glass unit
manufacture at Future Products Ltd. To
manage its expansion in IGU production, one of
the Midlands largest fabricators turned to long
standing supplier Edgetech UK, a Quanex company
for support, switching to Super Spacer warm
edge spacer for all glazed units and door panels.
Weve worked with Edgetech for over 15 years
and have always used Super Spacer in the
manufacture of our door panels, explains Dennis
Thorpe, Chairman at Future Products Ltd. As we
expanded into new markets and more customers
started ordering triple glazing we had to increase
productivity whilst still achieving our high quality
standards. Edgetech is a professional supplier to
deal with and were able to advise us on the best
machinery to support our plans for growth.

SOLIDOR'S NEW
UNBREAKABLE
ULTION
CYLINDER

olidors desire to drive innovation has again been

realised with the launch of the new Ultion 3 star
cylinder from Brisant-Secure, which has achieved
the coveted Sold Secure Diamond standard from the
Master Locksmiths Association (MLA).
High security has long been associated with all Solidor
products, given the renowned solid, hardwood core and
exclusive Avantis lock which features the industrys
largest deadbolt and hooks in the industry, all part of
an important consumer message. But the new Ultion
lock from Brisant-Secure takes composite door security
a big step further, helping to make for the industrys
most secure and differentiated composite door.
This new Ultion cylinder is just one of two that
have achieved Sold Secure Diamond, which is a real
life test operated by the MLA and it provides all the
functionality of a cylinder guarded lock, without the
additional cost. This makes the upgrade to this cylinder
an obvious security enhancement and the opportunity
for installation companies to realise more profit, a clear
win/win scenario.
The industry can sometimes appear guilty in failing
to sell the benefits of the upgrade to a better cylinder

in recent years, yet research shows that security is the

number one driving factor in external door sales and
Solidor promise theyll be addressing this with some
eagerly anticipated marketing tools.
Steve Stewart, managing director of Brisant-Secure
commented: Its re-assuring to know that forward
thinking companies such as Solidor value the
importance of having the very best security features
in their doors. With the Ultion lock they can now offer
the consumer the most secure composite door in the
market, not to mention the best looking!
Joe Martoccia, managing director of Solidor Group
concluded: Yet again were announcing an industry first
with the adoption of the Ultion lock. Its providing our
network partners with a major sales differential and
one that can yield increased margins, while at the same
time satisfying consumer demand for better security.

Winners of Truedor's 'Amazing

Competition 'announced

ruedor has announced the winners of

its Amazing Competition for the best
photographs of its doors sent in by
homeowners.
The winning homeowners were each presented
with a signed copy of Truedors brand ambassador
George Clarkes Amazing Spaces book while the
winning installers each received a voucher for an
amazing 100 of their next purchase.
Richard Kirman Sales and Marketing Manager for IG
Doors Trade Division explained the thinking behind
the competition.
We wanted our trade installer customers to get
involved and to have an opportunity to show how
proud they were of the fantastic installations they
had done. Encouraging them to get the homeowners
to send the photographs in with a recommendation
for them was a great way to do it; creating a
competition where the homeowner could win a
prize and the installer too was absolutely perfect.
The response was outstanding and the most

103|July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

difficult thing was picking out the winners. In the

end we picked ten, and the photographs are all
featured on our website www.truedor.co.uk. We
would encourage installers to keep on sending
photos in for the gallery, it will certainly help when
consumers visit the site.
We are grateful to George Clarke for giving us so
many copies of his fabulous Amazing Spaces book
which have been really well received by the winners,
and our congratulations go to the winning installers,
each of whom won a 100 voucher to discount off
their next Truedor.
The competition is just one of the things we are
doing to engage with installers of our doors and
their customers, and there will be lots more exciting
initiatives to come.

Music

KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK

eing brought up in the 90s meant that I

was exposed to 90s music from my older
brothers and sisters. Even though I was still
very young, I remember being handed down a
nirvana cd Nevermind as one of my first in my
CD collection. I am a huge fan of Nirvana, and the
grunge sound. So when I heard news of an official
Nirvana documentary film being made, I put it on
my to watch list. Nirvana influenced a generation
of 90s kids, to the point that there were actually
68 cases of copycat suicides after Kurts death.

Firstly I was impressed that the documentary film

had received the rights to Nirvanas music from the
Cobain family, meaning the soundtrack would be
epic unlike the Jimi Hendrix film that came out
earlier this year, where the directors only had rights
to his early recordings, and non of his famous back
catalogue. News surfaced that the documentary
film would include unheard recordings and
performances from the band as well as unreleased
home movies, artwork, photography, journals, and
songbooks. Enough to get any hardcore Nirvana
fan interested from the get go. The films title,
Montage Of Heck takes its name from a mix tape
created by Kurt in 1988. The film also includes
scenes animated by Stefan Nadelman and Hikso
Hulsing, which I found were very entertaining to
the soundtrack of Nirvana.
Just after the release of Montage of Heck a new
unofficially docudrama about Kurt Cobain came
out called Soaked In Bleach. Soaked In Bleach is
about the conspiracy behind Kurt Cobains suicide.
The film follows Tom Grant, the private investigator
hired by Kurts wife at the time Courtney Love after
his disappearance from rehab just before his death.
I have yet to see this film but it is on my watch
list. This article is not a film review, but a look into
the evidence supporting a conspiracy behind Kurt
Cobains death.
Kurt Cobain's untimely and tragic death in April of
112|July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

1994 continues to be shrouded with unanswered

questions - now for more than two decades. Many
questions have been raised about what happened
the days leading up to Kurts death. If you look at
the case, or read the books Im sure you will agree
that things are very fishy. The validity of his suicide
note is one; many handwriting experts claim
that parts of the note are forgery. You can read
Kurts suicide note here. Courtney Love and Kurt
Cobain are said to have been going through the
early stages of divorce before his death. Raising
questions that Courtney murdered Kurt to benefit
herself. The fact that Courtney hired a private
investigator a week before his death to find the
whereabouts of Kurt after he escaped from a
drug rehab facility some say is a smokescreen
to cover her involvement. Even Tom Grant the
private investigator hired by Love was suspicious:
"The first phone call to me began with a lie. When
GLAZING

Music
we met with her at her hotel, she continued lying.
She told us about stories she had just planted in
the press. She seemed extremely manipulative and
dominating. She didn't seem so concerned about
what was going on with him, although she said he
was suicidal and everybody knows he's going to kill
himself. Yet she seemed more concerned about her
career than anything else. So as we left the room,
I told my partner, Ben Klugman that we're going to
document everything that goes on here. We have a
missing person. Things aren't adding up. We need to
document carefully."
Coroner reports identified Kurt had lethal doses of
heroin in his blood at the time he pulled the trigger.
Toxicological tests determined 1.5 milligrams of
heroin per liter of blood and evidence of Valium.
This is a very high level of heroin to have taken,
so much so that you would overdose and die in
seconds, even with the needle still stuck in, like in
many overdose cases. Max Wallace, author of Love
& Death; The Murder Of Kurt Cobain says there
is not a single case in U.S. history documented
where someone was able to survive more than a
few seconds after ingesting this dose. Yet he was
able to pick up a shotgun and shoot himself point
blank in the head. Some say due to his tolerance of
the drug, he might be able to pull this off?
A long trail of evidence suggests investigators never
seriously contemplated the idea of murder at all. In
fact on the same day the body was found Seattle
Police had already officially labeled the death as a
suicide. It was widely reported that Kurt had locked
himself in the room and barricaded the door shut
with a stool. Tom Grant asked Sergeant Cameron
the police chief in charge of the investigation, if he
can examine the photographs that police took at
the scene. The detective refused, offering yet more
proof that he never took his murder investigation
seriously. "We haven't developed the photographs and
probably never will. We don't develop photographs
on suicides said Cameron. Months later, Grant
obtained the incident report filed by the first
detectives who arrived on the scene. The report
clearly demonstrates that the stool wasn't, in fact,
113|July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

wedged against the exit door at all. Rather, it was

standing in front of the French doors on the other
side of the roomdoors that didn't even serve as
an exit. Although the actual exit door was indeed
locked, it could have been locked and pulled shut
by anyone leaving the scene. Why Cameron was
repeating the demonstrably false story about the
wedged stool is a question he refuses to answer
to this day.
Whatever happened that day, the police report
proves that Kurt may never have barricaded
himself in the greenhouse where he died, and it
clearly demonstrates that another person could
have been in the room at the time of Kurt's death.
Thus, one of the most convincing pieces of socalled evidence pointing to suicide is nothing
more than a myth. It is a myth that has never been
dispelled by a single biographer, or by any of the
media that originally reported on the barricaded
door. It is a myth that many distraught teenagers
would cling to in the months and years to come.
I strongly advise any fan of Nirvana to watch A
Montage Of Heck and Soaked In Bleach, and make
up there own minds about what happened to Kurt
Cobain.

created the Young Person category to dispel the myth
that the majority of all young people were lazy and
didnt want to work. GQA honed in on that category in
particular and decided that they wanted to put their
name to it.

It is important for us to be involved in this type of

people recognition; it is into the fenestration industry
that most of our qualifications are issued and we
are more than keen to remain close to it so we can
understand its requirements and respond to them.
Sponsoring the NFAs seemed to us to be a logical
step; they are becoming very popular and we are
delighted to be on board. We are especially excited
to be sponsoring the Young Person of the Year Award,
a subject which is close to our heart, and we would
recommend everybody to get involved.
Speaking for the National Fenestration Awards Jason
Grafton Holt commented Were delighted that GQA
Qualifications are a main sponsor of the awards once
again. When we first set out to expand the sponsorship
of the awards, we wanted to work with companies that
made a real difference to the industry, companies that
had a real passion for what they do and a passion to
make a difference. Once we had spoken to Mick Clayton,
we knew wed found an ideal partner.
Supporting young people in the industry

as apprenticeships to get new young talent flowing into

with them for a long time to come.

Stuga ZX4-MK5. Cooking on gas!

any fabricators have enjoyed the benefits

of the Stuga ZX4 sawing & machining
center since its launch in May 2005
and this particular model has been the surprise
package for Stuga since the recession began to
ebb 18 months ago, becoming the number one
seller in the Stuga range and even outselling
the very popular AutoFlow-2. ZX4 sales in this
period have been eight with five of those already
commissioned.
Stuga like to continually improve their machines as
knowledge and technology move on and this has
happened so many times over the last ten years
that Stuga has toyed with the idea of changing
the name to reflect the big changes the machine
has gone through. The problem is that the ZX4
name has become so well known a name change
could be detrimental by creating the impression
that it is a new machine whereas in reality there
have been constant incremental changes, some

136|July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

small and some significant but being incremental

there are not the issues created by major changes.
Following ten years of constant development
the ZX4 is now at the MK5 level and comes with
many improvements over the original. Some
improvements are to the software, some to the
control systems, some mechanical and some are
feature based. The ZX4-MK5 utilises Beckhoff
technology and Windows 8.1 software giving it
the same leading technology as one or two more
expensive machines but at a lower price due to
the advantages of manufacturing it in the UK and
the fact there are no dealer margins to add to
the price. The ZX4 doesnt change MK with each
change or improvement, only when there are step
changes that improve the machine considerably.
Many of the MK5 changes are control and function
changes but these have led to a significant leap
in speed for many operations as well as more
accuracy.
GLAZING

Machining
A key to the success of the Stuga ZX4 is that it
is designed to be uncomplicated and easy to look
after. The trend of other machinery becoming
complicated has led to a shortage of good
technicians that can look after them. It doesnt
matter how many service technicians a dealer has if
they are not able to deal with complex technology
that needs a lot of support from the manufacturer
or people with very specialised skills. The cost of
looking after very complicated machines once out
of warranty is a factor frequently overlooked by
buyers of this kind of technology. There is no long
list of freelance service technicians operating in
the market that can be hired at competitive prices
to keep the cost down. Stuga have their entire
operation and back-up based here in this country
with trained staff ready to react quickly when
issues occur. This is backed-up by a comprehensive
service contract system that is paid monthly and
works very well offering including ultra-fast
response times.

137|July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

With an eye to technology Stuga sawing &

machining centers have been supplied with
internet enabled diagnostics and onboard camera
systems for the last six years creating an exciting
customer experience when things go wrong, which
will occasionally. Key to this kind of support is also
to have good technical people in place at all times
who can interpret these on-board systems and
very often have the fabricator back in production
without a service visit. The service contract also
provides for preventive maintenance utilising
a predetermined schedule backed up with free
emergency break-down provisions on a fast
response basis. Its no good having a high output
ZX4-MK5 if you cant get high output service to go
with it and Stuga score highly in this respect.
For further information regarding the ZX4-MK5 or
any other Stuga automatic sawing and machining
center please call 01493 742348 and ask for
machinery sales or visit www.stuga.co.uk.

hen Stuga put many years of automation

would change the production experience for so
many uPVC fabricators for so many years. Fifteen
years later more new machines are being built
every month.

rebuilt nearly twenty old machines in this way and

they will run for very many more years to come.
The vast majority of Stuga customers have
grown to like the consistency of dealing with
a manufacturer that is here in the UK building
British machines for British and Irish fabricators.
Stuga is not a dealer and is here in the UK time
zone, speaks the same language and takes full
responsibility for its products no matter where
they are or how they have been purchased. When
a fabricator buys a Stuga machine from another
fabricator or at an auction he will not get told you
didnt buy it from us so we cant help you or sorry
that machine is obsolete and we have no means to
help. Stuga machines can become obsolescent due
to technology changes but the company takes the
trouble to engineer work-arounds or new designs
to overcome such issues.

In 2000 eight Stuga Flowlines were built and

installed in the market place. Today four of those
eight machines are still fully operational and
unchanged with the other four having been
rebuilt into the latest ZX3 models, starting their
life again. Since the introduction of the Flowline,
which was later re-launched as the ZX3, Stuga
has also introduced the high volume ZX4 and the
small footprint Microline, later re-launched as the
AutoFlow-2. More than 150 of these automated
sawing & machining centers have been built and
many more are being built for installation in 2015. The other great value for Stuga customers lies

Movie Review

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Director: Peyton Reed
Running Time: 117 minutes
Starring: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas,
Corey Stoll.
Rating:

lockbuster time again this month with

the release of Marvels Ant-Man, a film
that was dogged early on in production
after its original director, Edgar Wright chose
to leave the production to be replaced by
relatively unknown director Peyton Reed.
Marvel has had a fairly good run of form with
recent releases Captain America: The Winter
Soldier and The Avengers franchise but for
me its the lesser known heroes that seem
to be providing more entertaining fare. AntMan isnt a broadly known title, much like
last years wildly popular Guardians of the
Galaxy and a trait both films share is the nice

balance between thrilling action and a sense

of fun with nicely landed comic moments. Paul
Rudd is a extremely likeable reluctant hero
and a great supporting cast including Michael
Douglas, House of Cards Corey Stoll and the
ever wonderful Michael Pena round things
off nicely. With fantastic action set pieces, vfx
and comic touches its well worth a big screen
night out!

Healthy Living

Healthy Habits

he simple fact about adopting a good set of

healthy habits is that it requires routine built
up over time. Habits are essentially regular
tendencies or practices and the truth is that some
habits can work for us and others can work against us.
A lot of what we do every single day of our lives is
automatic we are on autopilot! Whether its brushing
our teeth, taking a shower or eating breakfast. Take a
moment to consider in which order you would usually
do these three common daily activities and youll
realise that you probably do them in that particular
order through habit. Its become comfortable for you
to carry out these activities in that order. Youre used to
doing things in a certain way. If youre used to getting
up, then eating breakfast, then jumping in the shower,
then brushing your teeth then tomorrow morning just
try changing the order...obviously getting up is the first
in the sequence though! Did you notice how this felt
a little bit unnatural, slightly outside of your comfort
zone? Change this habit for a few weeks and it will
feel completely natural. This just illustrates how much

of what we do each day we actually do automatically,

without really thinking about it. 3 weeks is commonly
believed to be the amount of time it takes to change
a habit and for it to begin to feel more natural. The
more deep rooted the habit, the longer it will take
to reprogram our brains. Obviously this particular
example would be a relatively simple habit to change,
stopping smoking for example would be much more
difficult. But changing anything starts with that first
step!
The first step to changing a habit is to make a decision
and to have a reason in mind. Keep your goal in mind
as this will serve as your motivation. There has been
lots of research to suggest that having a goal in mind
when youre undertaking a difficult journey really is
essential to successful completion of the tasks required.
Will power is good to have but your primary motivating
factor will be your need to change. Keep your sights
on the goalsthe WHY part of what youre doing. This
applies to both changing bad habits and forming new
July 2015 | www.mytrade.tv |144

Healthy Living
habits. You may have a goal to lose weight - to get
that beach body for the summer, you may want to quit
smoking for the health benefits and to be able to run
around playing football with your kids without feeling
out of breath all the time. We make small decisions
each and every day which either work for us or against
us in reaching our goals. Theres no quick fix to living a
healthier lifestyle. Its those small conscious decisions
which we make every day which count. This is how
habits are formed. Eating an apple today wont make
you instantly healthy but eating an apple every day
instead of opting for that chocolate bar every day for
a few years can make a difference. Lets say that an
apple contains around 50 calories and your favourite
chocolate bar contains around 250 calories (these are
just estimates but you get the idea) and then theres
the nutritional value of each. All other things being
equal if you eat an apple a day for two years then youll
have consumed around 36500 calories in apples. Do
that with your favourite chocolate bar and youll have
consumed around 182500 in your chocolate bars. Now
considering that theres the old 3500 calories equals a
pound in body weight rule and whether you consider
this to be a myth or not I find this to be a good rule
of thumb. This means that in 2 years the chocolate
bars will be around 52 pounds in body weight against
the apples being just over 10 pounds. Thats over five
times the difference. Its that cumulative effect that,
over time, making certain food choices, has on your
body.
Now I love chocolate but had to cut it down because
I knew I was eating too much of the stuff and that
eventually it may catch up to me. So I did just that
I cut down. I now enjoy it occasionally and it is a
treat rather than part of my daily routine. Now I enjoy
chocolate more than I ever did because of the scarcity
of it in my life. I no longer feel guilty about eating it
because its a treat. I essentially required my brain in
terms of how I think about chocolate. I also exercise
daily and have done so since being very young but there
have been times in my life where Ive stayed away from
the gym for periods of timeI have got out of the good
habit! Its been more difficult to get back into this good
habit the longer Ive stayed away so theres a positive
correlation. I find that when I go to the gym I get the
rush that people describethe endorphins. Its great!
I love it! I find that writing down my goals is a great
motivator and then tracking my exercise habits helps

to keep me accountable.
Ive always found that there can be a big difference
between what we say and what we do. Ideas are good
but without action they are just ideas. So take action
but remember that slow and steady wins the race
remember The Tortoise and the Hare. Were looking
at lifestyle changes which have a positive effect
over time and forming good habits. You see, when
you work on your good habits, youll actually start to
find that you have less space and time for your bad
habits. For instance, when I go to the gym I feel like
eating more healthily. Its almost like your good habits
and opening even more doors to other good habits!
Theres a positive knock-on effect. Remember, healthy
lifestyle is the goal, not quick dramatic unsustainable
changes. On the other hand, there are some things I
gave up instantly, these were all or nothing habits like
smoking. Some people may be social smokers but I
was a daily smoker and I didnt like what I was doing.
There were no benefits to my bad habit of smoking so
I quit outright and never looked back. This was over
11 years ago and I never think about smoking anymore
and I havent done so for a very long time.
Personal development is often about putting off instant
gratification for longer term benefits such as giving up
some of your free time to study at night class or cutting
out some unhealthy foods so that your waistline wont
increase and you wont need to purchase larger sized
trousers every few years. Im happy to recognise my
faults and work on myself to become the best version
of myself possible. Striving towards a healthier and
more fulfilling lifestyle does require some often major
changes but the results are often well worth it and
these changes can be broken down into smaller steps.
As the long-term effects of making positive changes
in our lives begin to spill over into other areas of our
lives then the benefits just keep on growing. Working
out helps you to sleep better, leads to heathier eating
choices, gives you more energy, helps you concentrate
better at work and be more productive. The benefits
seem endless and affect every area of our lives. One
healthy habit leads to another. It all just requires that
first step which we have the choice to either make or
