Dear Customer

Thank you for contacting Symantec Technical Support.

Can you try to see if you can manually update virus definitions, list, and dictionary
entries ?

To manually update virus definitions, list, and dictionary entries:

1. On the main administration page, click the LiveUpdate method for the
LiveUpdate object. The following screen appears.

2. Click "LiveUpdate Now" to update the latest virus definitions, list, and
dictionary entries.

NOTE: If SWS is installed on the same server as another Symantec product,

then schedule the LiveUpdate settings within SWS to happen at least one hour
before or one hour after the normally scheduled LiveUpdate in the other
Symantec product. This will avoid corruption of the virus definitions.

The most common causes for list file or dictionary corruption is download to update
or from a system problem. To re-create lists and dictionaries, use the steps for the
operating system that applies to your computer.

WINDOWS NT/2000

1. Exit all open programs.

2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Programs > Accessories >
Administrative Tools > Services.

3. Right-click Symantec Web Security service and then click Stop.

4. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows
Explorer.

5. In the left pane select Vendor. The default location for the folder is:

<drive:>\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Web Security\Vendor

Note : If you have installed SWS to a different location, then browse to that
location and select the \SWS\vendor folder.
6. Select and delete the following fillies:
list_update
lists
lists_old
dictionaries
dictionaries_old

7. Create new empty files named:

lists
dictionaries

Note : In newer builds (SWS 3.0.1.68 or newer) deleting the empty

containers is sufficient. In older builds of SWS delete the files by typing the
following
command in the console an press Enter::

touch <filename>

<filename> designates the name of a file like lists.

To create new files for lists and dictionaries, open a command prompt and
type in the appropriate command and then press Enter:

echo # 2 0.0.0 Thu, 1 Jan 1970 04:00:00 -0400 (EST) > "C:\Program
Files\Symantec\SWS\Vendor\dictionaries"
echo # 2 0.0.0 Thu, 1 Jan 1970 04:00:00 -0400 (EST) > "C:\Program
Files\Symantec\SWS\Vendor\lists"

8. Restart Symantec Web Security Service.

9. Open the SWS Administration screen and click System > Modify.

In SWS 3.0 this is now under LiveUpdate.Pressing "liveupdate now" initiates

both list/dictionary download and liveupdate for antivirus definitions.

10. Select List/Dictionary, and click Next.

11. Click Initiate Download to start the download procedure. Make sure that you
check both the list version, as well as the dictionary version. While Lists can
be updated every night, they are often updated only once per week, so the list
should be no older than one to two weeks.

Eclipse/Solaris
Note : You must be logged in as Root or SU to perform these steps.

1. Stop the SWS process by typing the following command in the console and
then pressing Enter:
/etc/init.d/sws stop

2. Verify the SWS process is no longer running by typing the following command
in the console and then pressing Enter:

ps -ef | grep sws

Note : If the Symantec Web Security process continues to run then type the
following command in the console and press Enter:

kill -9 <pid>

3. Navigate to the vendor directory where the lists and dictionaries are stored by
typing the following command in the console and then pressing Enter:

lists
lists_old
dictionaries
dictionaries_old

command in the console an press Enter::

both list/dictionary download and liveupdate for antivirus definitions.

12. Select List/Dictionary, and click Next.
