All these systems are Type-tested LV switchgear assemblies (TTA) to IEC 60439-1 and -2. This
ensures that they offer a standard of safety and
reliability that meets the particularly high performance expectations of automated production
and for building services provision.
Performance characteristics:
Clear network structure
Unproblematic retrofitting in the event of load
changes
Low operating costs due to uninterrupted serviceability
Simple planning and installation
Room-covering systems for lighting installations and small loads
The CD system (up to 40 A) allows you to supply
lighting installations covering the whole expanse of, say, furniture showrooms, supermarkets
or greenhouses with power, and also provides
the means to easily fix them in position.
Due to its pleasing appearance, the equipment
is well suited for use in sales rooms visited by
the public. On the other hand, its high degree of
protection, to IP54, allows the CD system to be
used even in harsh environments.
The power source for loads with no fixed
location
The BD01 system is ideally suited for the power
supply (up to 160 A) in workshops and trade
premises. The trunking units are easily and
quickly to put together. The anti-rotation feature
on the tap-off units makes sure that the units are
correctly fitted and allows for easy retrofitting
even while the production is running.
Other benefits: minimum stock holding and uncomplicated planning due to one standard
frame size for five different current ratings.
1/8
The LX busbar trunking system is the perfect equipment for multistorey buildings where large quantities of power need to be transported, uninfluenced by the mounting position of the system.

Basics of planning busbar trunking systems
Overview
Developing a power distribution concept, including system and
component configurations, involves finding an effective solution
based on customer requirements and supplier technology. This
design information brochure for the LX busbar trunking system
for rated currents ranging from 800 A to 6300 A, is designed to
help with this task.
2/2
Siemens LV 72 2005
There will always be more than one possible solution which will
have to be assessed in terms of its technical and economic
advantages and disadvantages. In making this assessment, the
following requirements should be a priority:
Simple and transparent design
Long service life
High availability
Low fire load
Flexible adaptation to building modifications.
These requirements are generally easy to meet with appropriate
busbar trunking systems. For this reason, engineers increasingly
favour busbar trunking systems over cable installations for
power transmission and distribution applications. Siemens offers busbar trunking systems for rated currents ranging from 25
to 6300 A:
The CD busbar trunking system from 25 to 40 A is ideal for supplying lights and small consumers
The BD01 busbar trunking system from 40 to 160 A is designed for supplying workshops with tap-offs up to 63 A
The BD2 busbar trunking systems from 160 to 1250 A is designed for supplying medium-sized consumers in buildings
and in industry
The ventilated LD busbar trunking system is designed for supplying consumers with a high power consumption in industrial
applications
The LX sandwich system is designed for supplying large
power requirements in buildings
The design information brochure LV 71.T is available for designing the BD2 and LD busbar trunking systems.

Busbar trunking systems meet these demands for an economical power distribution system with simple design, fast installation, optimum flexibility and safety by offering:
Straightforward network structures
Minimum space requirements
Easy retrofitting with sudden changes in location and consumer ratings
High short-circuit rating and low fire load
The LX busbar trunking system is a type-tested low-voltage assembly (TTA) in accordance with IEC/EN 60439-1 and 2 in the
form of an aluminium enclosed sandwich system. The LX sandwich system consists of busbars, insulation, the aluminium enclosure and the fastening and connection elements.

LXA/LXC and LDA/LDC systems are available for distributing
large power requirements in buildings. For this type of application busbar trunking systems frequently have to meet the following requirements:
Flexible power distribution in high-rise buildings
Safe power supply for electronic consumers
To meet these requirements the LXA/LXC systems have very
favourable features in terms of design, high load capacity of the
neutral conductor as well as an additional isolated PE conductor.
Nevertheless, there are applications for which the use of the
LDA/LDC system is recommended. LD systems are ideally used
in applications with primarily horizontal busbar runs and required protection to IP34.

1) PE conductor = Enclosure
2) Separate PE conductor by means of an insulated busbar (Clean Earth)
3) Double cross-section of neutral conductor (200%) by means of additional
busbar
4) PE(PEN) conductor = busbar and enclosure
5) Only available as copper system (LXC)
6) These types have copper conductors
7) Technical clarification required before offer is submitted
Note:
When connections to non-Siemens connection units are used
in distribution board installations, it is necessary to ensure
that the permissible temperature limit of 135 C for the busbars
is not exceeded at an average ambient temperature of 35 C
over a mean time of 24 hours.
The rated current specifications stated in the table apply to the
limit temperature of 135 C.
The short-circuit rating of connections to non-Siemens distribution boards depends on the copper connections in the distribution board installation.

Overview
Project handling
Engineering is performed in six stages:
Determine and check building dimensions
Procure floor plans to scale.
Check drawing dimensions on site.
Record dimensions on site if no floor plans are available.
Convert them into binding documentation.
Immediately after receipt of order, make the order reservation
in the production factory.
Decide on and draw busbar runs
Draw a scale plan view of the busbar layout on the floor plans.
Co-ordinate the busbar runs with other equipment installations.
Take minimum clearances into consideration.
Transfer the dimensions decided on to an isometric representation.
Ensure that the tap-off points are useful and accessible.
Note the minimum clearances to the jointing points between
trunking units when the respective tap-off units are fitted.
Take busbar runs and building expansion into consideration
when engineering expansion compensation. External influences resulting from building expansions can be compensated with expansion compensation.
When engineering the horizontal busbar runs, pay attention to
the PE(N) position for vertical mounting.
4/2
Siemens LV 72 2005
Sequence to be followed:
Enter the dimensions of the feeder units, straight trunking units,
angle and branch units, and tap-off points etc. for the run.
Define types
Create parts lists
Order processing
If appropriate, agree staged deliveries for large orders.
Always mark parts with the Drawing Item No., in order to ensure
identification at the installation site.
When drawing up the orders
- Match delivery dates to the construction phases/to construction progress.
- Ensure delivery for installation at different points on the construction site by structured busbar run designation or staggered ordering.
Customer-specific non-standard solutions (on request)
Immediately after the order has been placed, request the ordering data from the technical department responsible.
Note:
Customized solutions always have longer lead times.
Optional lengths
After determining exact dimensions place order in a separate
order.
Order documents (send to factory)
Binding order

Conductor material
The conductor materials used in LX systems are aluminium for
(LXA) and copper for (LXC).
Busbar trunking systems with aluminium conductors are preferable due to their lower weight and lower costs.
a Aluminium busbar
s Tin-on-nickel plated
d Insulation with high thermal stability
Exceptions:
LXA07..: Rated current 2300 A
with busbar position horizontal, flat
LXA09..: Rated current 3800 A
with busbar position horizontal, flat
LXC01..: Rated current 900 A
with busbar position horizontal, flat
The busbar system has IP54 degree of protection as standard.
Enhancement of the degree of protection by fitting additional
components on site is only possible for power transmission (on
request).
Sizes, single systems and double systems
The size depends on the current rating and the conductor material. A total of 10 sizes are available. 7 sizes are single systems
and 3 sizes are double systems. The single system consists of
an enclosure each with 3 to 6 aluminium or copper busbars. The
double systems feature 6 to 12 busbars each in two enclosures.
The exact numbers of busbars depends on the required conductor configuration. There are eight different types of conductor
configurations.

In individual steps: The first screw head shears off as soon as the
defined torque is attained. Below this, a second screw head is
located which actually releases the clamp connection. When reusing the trunking unit (joint block), it must be retightened to the
defined torque of 120 10 Nm.
The joint block is fixed to the trunking unit. It does not compensate for longitudinal expansion of the trunking unit. The expansion unit must therefore be engineered in accordance with the
applicable engineering rules, see Expansion unit and fixed

by the load to be supported. The fixing brackets can be secured directly on the walls where there is no unevenness or angles.
Application
LX universal connection units are used as feeder units for transformers and for distribution board connection (with type suffix

Connection to
non-Siemens distribution boards
Overview
Short-circuit rating
Versions
The non-Siemens distribution board connection units feature
copper conductors. They are supplied without joint blocks.
Refer to the selection and ordering data for type references.
The short-circuit rating of connections to non-Siemens distribution boards is governed by the copper connections in the distribution board installation. Only the manufacturer of the distribution board installation can provide verification of the short-circuit
rating of the dropper bars.
The unit for connection to non-Siemens distribution boards is
supplied as a type-tested unit.
The rating of the copper connections must be matched to the required short-circuit level.
Connection to the SIVACON system
Version
Connection options
Since these units are used for customized solutions, early agreement with the distribution board manufacturer is necessary.
Whoever designs and installs the connections between the distribution board connection unit (Siemens product) and the distribution busbars of the non-Siemens distribution board, as a rule
the distribution board manufacturer, is responsible for this work.
Rated currents
The rated currents can be taken from the key to type references
in the selection pages. These specifications conform to
IEC/EN 60 439-1 and -2 for an ambient temperature of 35 C on
a 24 h mean. The limit temperature of the copper busbars insulated with a highly thermally stable material is 135 C.
When using non-Siemens connection units in distribution board
installations, it is necessary to ensure that the temperature limit
is not exceeded.
Terminal capacity for the copper connections see Chapter
LXA/LXC Busbar Truncking System Dimension drawings.

Overview
Where the busbar trunking system penetrates a fire wall or fire
ceiling, it must be fitted with a fire barrier.
The fire barrier can be fully fitted on the trunking unit ex-works if
required or supplied separately as an individual type for mounting on site. The engineering guidelines in this chapter apply for
both versions.
The instructions below apply to the engineering, ordering and
fitting of the fire barrier:
Engineering

Overview
The busbar pack and enclosure expand due to the heat losses
arising when the busbars are under load.
The lengthwise expansion of the busbar pack depends on:
The conductor material used in the busbar systems
The mode of installation of the busbar run
(horizontal or vertical)
Whether used for power transmission or distribution.

Fixing
The busbar run is secured using special fixing brackets (LX-BH,
LX..-BF or LX-K) that allow for a certain amount of slippage of the
busbar run when it is expanding under load.
Details about fixing intervals are to be found in Chapter
LXA/LXC Busbar Trunking System Technical Data. Each trunking unit must be supported by at least one fixing bracket.

Notes
The current rating is unaffected by the mounting position (horizontal or vertical). The standard degree of protection is IP54. The
floor height is 3.40 m.
Since this is a single-trunking system, one fixing bracket is to be
fitted for a vertical installation.
The expansion compensation must be engineered for the beginning of the busbar run. It must be attached to the lower end.

Overview
Standards
In Germany, the official certification of functional endurance in
the event of fire must be provided to DIN 4102 Part 12.
Verification which applies are the test certificates and approvals
for the respective positions issued by the material test institute
for buildings in Braunschweig.
Application
For certain applications, VDE 0108 requires that functional endurance of busbar trunking systems for supplying power to parts
of installations be provided for an adequate time period, e.g.:
E 90 = fire resistance period 90 min.
Overview
Application
When transmitting power over long distances with LXA(C) busbar trunking systems, a voltage drop which varies in magnitude
occurs. The voltage drop is influenced by the by the arrangement of the conductors.
The use of three phase sequence reversal units has the effect
that the magnitude of the voltage drop on all three phases corresponds to the mean value. This means, that one phase sequence reversal unit must be positioned after each third of the
total length of the busbar run.
Phase sequence reversal units are available on request.

Glossary
In accordance with IEC/EN 60439-1, rated values are supplied by
the manufacturers of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies. These rated values apply for the specified operating
conditions and characterise the usability of a switchgear assembly. The rated values should be used as a basis for
co-ordination of equipment or engineering the switchgear assemblies.
The operational power that an equipment is capable of switching at the associated rated operational voltage in accordance
with the utilization category, e.g. contactor utilization category
AC-3: 37 kW at 400 V.
Rated frequency
IEC/EN 60947-1; 4.3.3
Measures the stability of the internal clearances inside a switchgear against overvoltage peaks. The utilization of suitable
switchgear can ensure that overvoltages are prevented from
transfering from the mains to deenergized system sections within it.
The voltage to which insulation tests and creepage distances refer. Under no circumstances is the highest rated operational voltage permitted to exceed the rated insulation voltage.

Glossary
Rated peak short-circuit withstand current (Ipk)
IEC/EN 60439-1; 4.4
The maximum value of current which a switchgear unit is capable of switching off at rated operational voltage and rated frequency without sustaining damage. It is expressed as r.m.s.
value.
see Rated operational voltage
The maximum value of current which a switchgear unit is capable of switching on at a specific rated operational voltage and
rated frequency without sustaining damage. Unlike other characteristics values, this is expressed as a peak value.
see Rated operational voltage
The rated short-circuit withstand current describes, as the effective value of the short-circuit current, the thermal strength of a
circuit in a switchgear assembly during transient loading. The
rated short-time withstand current is normally determined for the
duration of 1 s, and any divergent times must be stated. The rated short-time withstand current is specified for the distribution
system and/or main busbars of a switchgear assembly.
Maximum short-circuit current, which a circuit-breaker is capable of interrupting (test cycle: O-CO, previously P-1). After interrupting this current value the circuit-breaker is capable, with
increased tolerances, of disconnecting in the event of overloading.

Ordering notes
Al and Cu surcharges
Surcharges for copper (Cu) and aluminium (Al) will be added to
the product prices; these surcharges will take the form of percentages of the list prices. Calculation of the surcharges will be
governed by the official Al quotation for aluminium and by the
Cu-DEL quotation applying on the date of receipt of order or of
call-off.
For the products in this catalog, aluminum and copper are included in the prices on the basis of 150,-- /100 kg. Aluminum and
copper quotations above that amount are calculated on the basis of the month previous to invoicing.
Calculation formula for Al/Cu surcharges:
Cu-DEL quotation or Al quotation 150

Small orders
When small orders are placed, the costs associated with order
processing are greater than the order value. We recommend
therefore that you combine several small orders. Where this is
not possible, we unfortunately find it necessary to charge a
processing supplement of 20.-- to cover our costs for order
processing and invoicing for all orders with a net goods value
of less than 250.--.
