THEATRE

The poignant and powerful play, Mother to Mother is an adaptation of Sindiwe Magonas novel of the
same name. The story is based on the murder of young American Fulbright scholar Amy Biehl who died
in a violent mob attack in Gugulethu on 25 August 1993. The story resonated with Magona because the
young man who killed Amy Biehl was in fact a neighbours son. This moved her to write a fictional letter
from the mother of the murderer to Amy Biehls mother. This took the form of the novel Mother to
Mother.
The novel was adapted into a play by award-winning actress Thembi Mtshali-Jones, acclaimed theatre
director Janice Honeyman and Sindiwe Magona. The poignant and powerful theatre play Mother to
Mother, first produced by the Baxter Theatre in 2009, has been performed worldwide to critical
acclaim. The performances of Mother to Mother at the Puku Story Festival are significant because it is
the first time the play will be performed before Eastern Cape audiences in isiXhosa. The high school
students who will make up the bulk of the audiences will benefit from seeing the theatre adaptation of
their setbooks for English first language.

WORKSHOP:
Environmental Literature
for Children

Through its interaction with various communities, Puku has realized that the lack of educational
reading material in African languages has serious consequences for environmental education. We
believe that a careful selection and application of developmentally appropriate and scientifically
accurate literature is an effective tool to create environmental awareness in educators and children
alike. Puku has therefore decided to initiate a conscious process of dialogue to develop strategies to
generate the content needed to provide environmental literacy and education.
