SURFACE PREPARATION

Before starting any work ensure that the

base is :
Sufficiently flat to permit the specified
flatness of finished tiling, bearing in mind
the permissible minimum and maximum
thickness of the bedding material.
Suitable for tiling in the service conditions
to which it will be exposed.
Free from efflorescence, laitance, dirt and
other loose material. Remove thoroughly by
dry brushing.
Clean: All tile and other non-porous surfaces
should be cleaned down by washing with
water containing detergent, then with clean
water.
SITE WORK INSTRUCTIONS
SURFACE CONSIDERATIONS

New Concrete / Brick / Block Wall:

Before rendering / plastering / tiling, allow
walls to dry out by exposure to air for at least
6 weeks.

Overlaid Timber Floors:

Timber floor / Metal boards must be rigid and
stable to receive tiles and capable of carrying
the additional load without deflection. Adequate
ventilation must exist beneath the timber /
metal board. Overlay existing floor with WBP
grade or marine grade plywood, at least 15mm
thick, timber/metal boards should be screwed
down (not nailed) at 300 mm centres. All timber
surfaces should be primed on the reverse side
and edges with ARDEX ENDURA ADMIX AD1.
Fibre Cement Boards / Tile Backer Boards:
Ensure that boards are dry, securely fixed,
rigid and fixings do not protrude. Do not seal
or prime surfaces that are to be tiled. The
suitability of the boards as a background for
ceramic tiling should be confirmed with the
manufacturer.
MDF (Internal Dry Areas Only) / Plywood / Chip
Board:
Ensure that sheets are capable of carrying the
expected load without deflection, dry securely
fixed and rigid and that fixings do not protrude.
Where necessary insert noggings to support
all board edges and to allow screw fixing at
300mm centres. Seal the reverse side and
edges with ARDEX ENDURA ADMIX AD1.
Do not seal or prime surfaces that are to be
tiled.

New Cement / Sand Rendering:

Before commencing tiling, allow new rendering
to dry out by exposure to air for at least
2 weeks. (3 weeks for swimming pools).

Asphalt (internal Use Flooring Grade): Asphalt

must be in sound condition and have adequate
cohesive strength. In shower areas, it is
recommended to waterproof the background
with ARDEX ENDURA waterproofing products.

New Concrete Bases

Before commencing tiling ensure that bases
have been allowed to dry out by exposure to
air for at least 4 weeks.

For further information on other substrates

and preparation, consult the ARDEX ENDURA
Technical Service Department.

Existing Concrete / Screed Bases:

Cut out all loose or hollow portions and make
good with a 1:3 cement : sand mortar applied
over a slurry bonding coat*. Carefully remove
any soft or unsound residues of existing
adhesive without damaging the bases. Ensure
remaining adhesive residue is sound and firmly
bonded to the base.

MIXING

Add PLATINUM STAR to clean water and mix

thoroughly until slump-free mortar is obtained.
A 20kg bag will require approximately
5 - 5.5 litres of water. The adhesive is
immediately ready-for-use and has a pot-life
of 3 hours at 27 10C.
APPLICATION

Ceramic / Vitrified & Fully Vitrified Tile /

Terrazzo / Hard Natural Stone Bases:
Check that existing finish is firmly adhering
to the base. Remove any loose or hollow
sounding areas and make good with a
1:3 cement : sand mortar applied over a
slurry bonding coat*. Any surface
contamination should be removed with
ARDEX ENDURA HEAVY DUTY TILE CLEANER /
TILE & STONE CLEANER.
*Slurry bonding coat is prepared by mixing 2 parts by
weight of portland cement to 1 part of ARDEX ENDURA
ADMIX AD1. Brush on the base immediately before applying
mortar.

1. Spread not more than 1 sq.m. at a time,

apply the adhesive to the wall or floor
surface.
2. Comb the adhesive to the required depth
(between 3 - 6mm) using a suitable trowel.
3. Press the tiles firmly into position with a
slight twisting action, checking periodically
that good contact is maintained with the
back of each tile. Leave no voids behind
tiles when solid-bed fixing.
4. Tiles should be fixed within 20 minutes of
adhesive being applied, depending on the
porosity of the surface and atmospheric

conditions. Tiles can be adjusted up to

20 - 25 minutes after fixing. Touch the
adhesive ribs periodically and if a skin has
formed, remove the adhesive and apply
a new layer of adhesive.
5. Leave adequate joints between individual wall
and floor tiles unless self spacing tiles are
used.
6. Clean off surplus adhesive from the tile face
and between joints.
7. Do not use in damp conditions and
temperature less than 50C
8. Use suitable clamps along with adhesive at
the time of installation of tiles / stones at
height of more than 20 feet. If the tile /
stone size are bigger, use clamps from 10
feet height
9. Leave movement joints at every 10 meters
height as per standard BS 5385.

NOTE

GROUTING

Grouting should not be carried out for at least

24 hours. Use the appropriate grouting
material from the range of cementitious and
epoxy grouts.
NOTE: The addition of ARDEX ENDURA
ADMIX GT1 to cement-based grouts will
enhance adhesion to tile edges,
water-resistance and improves flexibility

Coverage will depend on the nature and

flatness of the surface and the method
of application. For good coverage, it is vitally
important that all surfaces should be clean,
smooth, plumb, level and free from defects
and undulations.
STORAGE AND SHELF LIFE

PLATINUM STAR has a shelf life of 12 months

when stored in normal dry conditions.
