A. Review of the Results of the Jun 2009 RS Department Workshop

B. RS1 The Human Person’s Relationship with God


a. Observed Strength / Weakness of current RS1 Course
1. With the current materials, classes can be stuck with
memorizing
2. The Topics in RS1 are so many that lessons remain on the
surface level only and students acquire only superficial
knowledge about these topics.
3. Students do not have a clear understanding of the History of
Salvation, the Reality of God, the reality of Sin, the Beauty of
Salvation, the value of man in the Plan of God, Splendor of
the Word of God, the richness of Prayer.
4. The current RS Handouts are too theological, the language is
hard for the level of students who have not received any
religious instructions from high school.
5. There are inadequate suggested learning activities.
b. Desired Learning Objectives
1. Students will have a clearer understanding and appreciation of
Salvation History, of the Books of the Old and New
Testament
2. Students will have a clearer understanding of the reality of Sin
3. Students will have a clearer understanding of the reality of
God’s presence in their lives in contrast to the secularist
Godless mindset.
4. Students will have the capacity of Reflection of the Word of God
5. Students will show the ability to read, comprehend and
appreciate the reading of the Word

7. Start a practice of adopting a Patron Saint for each class

Songs and using this as introduction to the topic

C. RS2 The Church and Sacraments


a. Observed Strength / Weakness of the current RS 2 Course
1. The topics in RS2 Ecclesiology, Church History and Sacraments
are too many such that it is hard to go deeper into the
discussion of these topics, students learn only the superficial
knowledge of these topics
2. Teachers have to decide which topic to deepen, but cannot
afford to go deep in the discussion of all these topics
3. Some of the materials in the RS Handouts are too theological
and can be hard for the students to grasp, it is suggested to
simplify the presentation of these topics.

b. Desired Learning Outcomes


1. Students will develop a personal value of going to the mass,
receiving confession and prayers like the Rosary on their
own.
2. Students will develop the habit of being prayerful, both in the
communal and personal level
3. Students will be encouraged to join outreach programs where
they can openly express or share their faith to others in the
community (like joining as Catechist of the TheoplanA
program)
4. Students will be inspired to serve God through the church as
Priest, Religious Brother or sister.
5. Students will have a heightened sensitivity and responsiveness
to current issues affecting society and the church
6. Students will develop a strong sense of membership in the
Church and be able to defend the church through thick and
thin
7. Students will show a strong sense of volunteerism in the service
of the Church and the community

D. RS3 The Christian Morality

1. Students will have a clear understanding of what is moral and

analyzing and evaluating the moral options, Apply the moral
principles and establish or create their personal stand or
decision & convictions on moral issues
3. Students will be motivated by the higher values (honesty,
respect for their own bodies and their own personal dignity,
Faith)
4. Students will be motivated to be a living Christian Witness in
the school, in their Peers, in their homes and in the
community or society in general.

a. Desired Learning Outcomes
1. Students will discover the guide in developing a sound decision
making for their choice of vocation, whether they are called
for the Priesthood, Religious life or Married Life (if in married
life, the choice of their spouse and the time of marrying)
2. Students will develop the skills and habits of encouraging the
vocation of friends and strengthen the vocation to married
life of their parents
3. Students will learn and appreciate the meaning and the stages
of Courtship in the light of the value of Christian Marriage
4. Students will present a creative presentation of the symbols
and meanings of a wedding ceremony
b. Suggested Methodology
1. Vocation Campaign beyond the confines of the vocation week
2. Discover the Vocation stories of a Priest, a Religious Sister or
Brother, a Married Person and a Single Person through
interview or symposium
3. Educational trip to the seminary, formation houses or convents
or monasteries or the Domus Dei
4. Field Research and Creative reporting on the qualities of an
ideal or role model Priest, Nun, Brother, Married Persons, or
Single Persons.
5. Focus group discussions of certain issues on Vocations and
Missions (insights from a broken marriage, pros and cons on
the length of courtship)
6. Discover the Love story of your Parents and Grand Parents
7. Discover the challenges and triumphs faced by married couples
in their various stages of marriage (first 5 years, 6-10 years,
11- 15 years of marriage, etc)
8. Case study on the causes & effects, challenges & realities of

F. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT PLANS & PROPOSALS


Proposal 1. Enhancement of the Current RS Curriculum (its
Desired Learning Objectives, Methodology and Content) in preparation
for the implementation of the UbD, Understanding by Design,

Proposal 2 . Revision of the current RS Curriculum in order to


make it Responsive to the challenge of the time and abreast with the
renewed learning objectives set by the RS Department Faculty.
These New RS Subjects are proposed to be implemented starting
Academic Year 2011 -2012.
RS1 – Lasallian Heritage and Basic Christian Doctrines
We envision a Lasallian Learner who is well grounded on
the proper knowledge of the Lasallian Heritage thus develop the
correct habit of a Lasallian which will lead to a more holistic
development of a true Lasallian culture.
This part of the course shall include The Life, works &
teachings of the Founder: St John Baptist de la Salle, the Journey
& Struggles of the Lasallian Brothers and the Institute of the
Brothers of Christian School, and the Lasallian Heritage in the
Philippines, the history, social impact and contributions of the
Lasallian presence in the Philippines.
We envision a Lasallian Christian who is well grounded on
the basic doctrines of the Catholic Church thus develop a strong
sense of understanding and appreciation of the Christian faith as
shown in their application of the faith in their own Personal
Relationship with God and to the People of God.
This part of the course shall include the basic Catholic
teachings on Christology and Mariology. The course likewise
includes the training for developing skills in praying,
enhancement of their acquired value and skills on Christian
humble service and charity as exemplified from the life of Mary
the First Christian Disciple, mother and model of Disciples.
This course will be a required subject for all incoming
Freshmen on their first semester and a pre-requisite to all the
other RS Subjects

RS2 – Salvation History


We envision a Lasallian Learner who has a deep sense of
understanding of the History of Salvation, the special place of
man in the plan of God, the various ways with which God
revealed His Plan of loving goodness for man.
We envision a Lasallian Learner who has developed the
skill of reflecting and seeing God: His presence, his providence,
his Word, His call and challenge for Christians in today’s world.
The course shall include the detailed study on the books
of the Old Testament and the New Testament. The various tool
and guide for understanding the message of a biblical text, its
original meaning and its challenges and application to the life of
the students.
In this course, the Lasallian Learner shall be trained how
to read the Bible as a collection of books and as the Word of
God. With guided reflection & sharing exercises the students will
develop the skills to see the Word of God alive in their own
individual and unique circumstances as a Christian Disciple. The
course shall likewise introduce the students to the beautiful
tradition of the Catholic Church on the Readings of the Mass,
thus prepare them to be of service to the Church as readers and
proclaimers of the Word.
This course will be offered for the 2nd semester of the
Freshmen

RS3 – Church History and Ecclesiology


We envision a Lasallian Learner who has a deep sense of
understanding of the Structure, History and the Dynamics of the
Roman Catholic Church in general and of Local Church in the
Diocese of Bacolod in particular. We envision a Lasallian Learner
who have a strong sense of membership and commitment to the
development of the people of God, the Christian Community of
Disciples by initiating their formation into a member of a basic
ecclesial community
This course shall include systematic study on the nature,
structure, and history of the Church with special emphasis on
the history of the Church in Negros. The course will also include
the study on the movements of renewals in the church as found
in the documents of the Second Vatican Council, the Second
Plenary Council of the Philippines and the Acts and Decrees of
the Second Diocesan Synod of the Diocese of Bacolod.
Through the accompanying formation program of the RS
Department, the Parish Immersion Program, the Lasallian
Learner shall be introduced into the dynamics of becoming a
conscientious and active member of the Christian Community in
their parish and diocese. The Lasallian Learner will be introduced
to the mechanics and activities in building a Basic Ecclesial
Community in the Campus.
This course will be offered for the 1st semester of the
Second Years

RS4 – Liturgy and Sacraments


We envision a Christian Community of Lasallians who
celebrates the liturgy with an informed faith and correct practice
and animated by the Holy Spirit.
We envision a Lasallian Learner who is deeply rooted in
their personal prayer life and fully integrated into the liturgical
life of the Christian Community of the Parish.
We envision a Lasallian Learner who has deep sense of
understanding of the real meaning and value of the Sacraments
as the sensible and efficacious sign of God’s generous
outpouring of Grace.
We envision a Lasallian Learner who frequently and
meaningfully receives the sacrament of Holy Eucharist, the
summit of Christian Worship and the Fount of Christian grace
and Charity, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
This course shall include the systematic study on the
Sacred Liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church. The course also
includes study on the nature & meaning, theological and
canonical foundation and the Rites of celebration of the Seven
Sacraments.
In this course, the Lasallian Learner shall be trained how
the Liturgical celebration are properly conducted. The Lasallian
learner shall be introduced on the proper Christian practice of
Reflection, Meditation and Intercession.
This course will be offered for the 2nd semester of the
Second years

RS5 – Moral Theology (2nd Sem)


As the Lasallian learner matures in age, their exposure to
moral issues and situations increases, as such the lessons on
Moral theology are very much timely Our vision of a Lasallian
Learner:
 One who has a clear understanding of the Christian
Moral Principle,
 With the skills and capacity to recognize what is good
for moral decision making
 Motivated by higher appreciation of values of
honesty, respect for their own bodies, faith in the
Almighty God, high regard for human dignity, and
Christian Witness
This course shall include the systematic discussion on the
Christian Moral Principles, the Meaning and Challenges of the
Ten Commandments and the Special contemporary questions on
Morality.
In this course, the Lasallian Learner shall be trained to
recognize a moral issue, analyze the moral quality of the human
Act that lead towards a moral decision, and be challenge to do a
positive moral act.
This course will be offered for the 2nd semester of the
Third years

RS6 – The Social Teachings of the Church (1st Sem)


As they are about to enter the field of labor as new
professionals we envision a Lasallian Learner who:
 has deep sense of understanding of the social teachings of the church.
 Has the clear vision of the Christian’s role in the workplace.
 Has the strong conviction of bringing and living out the Christian message
right into the workplace.
 Has the heart who have been holistically exposed and trained how to stand
up for the Christ in the reality of the workplace thus bring about the image of
a real Christian Lasallian Businessmen
 This course will be a very timely accompaniment to students who are
currently exposed to the reality of the workplace through their On the Job
Training Program.
This course shall include the systematic discussion on the
social teachings of the church on the Dignity of Labor, Justice &
Peace, Solidarity, Subsidiarity, etc.
In this course, the Lasallian Learner shall be trained to
evaluate the social situations surrounding the workplace, using
the principles set forth by the Catholic Church on achieving
Christian Social Justice and Peace.
This course will be offered for the 1st semester of the
Fourth years
Proposal 3. Revision of the current Philosophy Curriculum in
order to make it Responsive to the challenge of the time and abreast
with the renewed learning objectives set by the Faculty of the RS &
Philosophy Department.

PHILO1: LOGIC
The course studies propositions and sentences,
argument construction and analysis. Includes the use of
Venn diagrams, testing of syllogisms, theory of
deduction, symbolic language of modern logic,
quantification theory. With emphasis on skill building in
logical analysis through drill work and problem solving

PHILO2: PHILOSOPHY OF MAN


The course studies the philosophical act,
philosophical approaches to the study of man and the
human condition. Includes the theory of knowledge, and
the metaphysics of love and creative fidelity, death and
the absolute thou.
This course will be offered to the Second
years

PHILO3: PROFESSIONAL ETHICS (Business Ethics for CBA,


CAS, CoE, Health Ethics for Nursing, Educator’s
Ethics for Education, )
The course will study the general principles of
Ethics and its specific application to the various field of
the human Act and field of profession. The Special
questions on Ethics will be tackled in response to the
challenges and application of ethical issues on specific
field of profession.
This course will be offered to the Third years

PHILO4: SOCIAL PHILOSOPHY & The Social Teachings of


the Church

DAY 2 AGENDA: RS STUDENT FORMATION PROGRAM EVALUATION AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
A. Parish Immersion Program
1. Report of the Moderator
a. The PIP moderator visited 29 parishes of the Diocese of Bacolod,
Introduced the PIP to the Parish Priest or coordinated with the
Parish Secretaries regarding the activities of the Lasalle students
in the Parish Immersion Program
b. It is noted that most of the students worked as cleaners of the
parish church

2. Problems/Feedbacks:
a. some students did the immersion almost at the end of the
semester
b. signatures, pictures, and narrative reports or journal as
triangulation- Lizada
c. monitoring
d. signatures sometimes are forged
e. working as cleaners/clerical works
f. some students are working in other parishes
g. activities are sometimes initiated by the teachers
h. SHS secretary is doing extra effort…
i. non Catholics are more active…with documentation
j. some students became active in their respective
parishes/churches even in a short period of time even the
involvement is cleaning the church..-Lorna
k. some parishes/parish priests are really taking care of the

l. lack of acceptance from the parish
3. Suggestions/Recommendations:
a. Require students to fulfill their PIP at least 5 hours per month for
checking
b. Require students to submit portfolios, pictures, journals
c. Coordinate with the Diocesan Commission on Youth, for the
grand launching of PIP at the Coliseum, July 2 or 4 (wholeday):
o There will be booth/ table provided for each Vicariate,
o Students will be instructed to search for their parish or vicariate And apply to
be a PIP volunteer to their specific Parish/Vicariate
o At the End of the Day, these participating Vicariate/Parish will provide list of
students
o There will be exposition of the various Ministries and Involvements which the
Students can join as part of their PIP.
o A Sharing / Testimony of previous PIP volunteers will be aired.
o The grand Launching will be capped by a celebration of the Holy Mass and a
send off prayer ceremony
d. Moderator to coordinate with the heads of the youth, vicariate
council and moderator to help in the monitoring
e. open it also to other commissions, catechesis, social action,
bible commission, youth commission,
f. ask the admin to provide a room or office for volunteers c/o Jay
g. Ask the students to get the pictures and narrative reports of

h. sponsor a mass per class and assign students to take care of

of checklist of the 9 liturgical ministries..to whom shall they

k. assign class mayor to collect the PIP per month so the teacher
can really monitor the activities (5 hours, if not
covered..deduction already)-Galzote…ongoing not just after
the PIP the students will stop working…ex. Choir..extend
involvement and PIP is just an entry for ongoing participation
of students…
l. revive the Good Samaritan Program (charitable institutions)
aside from encouraging them to join the existing catholic orgs.

B. Theo Plan A Program


1. Moderators’ Report
a. TheoPlanA Program had a total of 62 Volunteer student Catechists
this Academic Year 2009 – 2010. 11 from the College of
Education (18%), 35 from the College of Nursing (56%) and 16
from the College of Business and Accountancy (26%).
b. The Areas of Apostolate are: Mandalagan Elementary School,
Hervias National High School, the Purok chapels of Eroreco
(Chaplaincy of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary) and the
Street Children surrounding USLS, the catechism classes are
held in the grounds of the Redemptorist Church

2. Problems / Feedback
a. Volunteers need a center / room where Catechism materials can be
deposited, where they can gather for regular meetings, sharing
of experiences and lesson planning,
b. Some Parish Priest are asking the help of Theoplan A in establishing
Sunday school catechism classes in their parish.
3. Suggestions / Recommendation
a. tap EDUC (Lizada, Lagumbay, Estrellas) and CAS students as
volunteers…
b. EDUC students’ PIP shall be teaching with the Theo Plan A
volunteers (Lagumbay)
c. Dr. Lizada is 5 years already as Moderator and is asking for new
moderator to replace him, but Sr. Lauren and the department is
asking him to have it at least one more year…
d. Request from the VCAA for a room that will serve as an office or
center for the RS Department’s Student Faith Life Formation
Programs (PIP, TheoPlanA & religious Organizations: CYA, YFC,
DWLM)

C. Vocation Awareness Week


1. Committee Report
a. Vocation Awareness week was held on the 1st week of December,
b. Activities are: Opening Mass, Vocation symposium, Room to room
Vocation Campaign and Lunch with Vocation promoters
2. Feedback / Problems
a. The budget for the Vocation Awareness week is very limited, we
have to solicit for donation for the food of the vocation
promoters… great gratitude to the generosity of Fr Quijano for
donating his stipends and personal fund for the lunch of the
vocation promoters
b. There were just a few Religious Congregations who joined the room
to room campaign for vocation
3. Suggestions and Recommendations
a. Set the First Week of December as the permanent schedule of the
succeeding vocation Awareness week
b. Other religious communities/vocation promoters must really be
visible and must campaign for vocations
c. Invite married couple, single person to share their vocation stories
d. Schedule coliseum for Vocation Awareness (1st day-whole day)

D. Christ Awareness Week / Bible and Theology Quiz Bee / Gospel


Actualization Film Festival
1. Moderators’ Report
a. In coordination with the USG and the Catholic organizations the
Christ Awareness Week celebration was held last March 1-5
2010,
b. The following are the activities: Opening Mass, symposium with
Brother Arian, talk of Fr. Louie Galbines, Bible Quiz Bee, RS
Video Film Festival, Benediction, Campus Blessing and
Procession

2. Problems / Feedback
a. There was a lack of participation from the students due to the
movie: My sister’s Keeper.
b. There were some questions in the Bible and theology quizbee whose
answer was debatable.
c. The questions were taken from previous quizbee question bank, this
year it was not rechecked by other RS Faculty due to lack of
time for preparation.
d. churchgoers are donating rosaries, prayer booklets during this CAW

3. Suggestions / Recommendation
a. Let us ask our students to make more gospel actualization videos
on how the gospel message can be more alive in today’s world
like the ones shown: Hinulsol, The Devil’s Wear Pajamas, Marisi.

freshman orientation students are given Lasallian rosaries

Start planning for the build up activities---progressive…
ex. Observance of important Lasallian saints, dates, etc..to celebrate
within this year (Fr Ronald):
-arrival of Lasalle relics in coordination w Fr. Quijano
-suggestion-line up all the activities in one month (Eres)
-highlight the value in every activity esp. Lasallian values

3 .Religious Education Conference (local and national) nominated chair:

(highlights of his teachings): Pedagogy (The Conduct of School etc..),

symposium, reflection songs, MTV or poems or compose Lasallian
songs and offer it during April 30;bday of LAsalle, t-shirt design)
