Thecruxofhisargumentisbasedonasimpleexperimentperformedinhisgarden,inwhichheplaceda
tubepointedatthePoleStar.

Hesaysofit:
Ihavethistubefixedinmygarden,size3feet6in.by3/4in.,directedtothefixedpolestar,andIcanview
thestarcontinually.Why?Becausethestarisfixedintheheavensandbecausetheearthisafixturealso.
Histubewouldhavecoveredonlyjustoveronedegreeofarcofthesky,soactuallyheshouldhave
observedalittlemovementofPolaris,butpresumablyhewasnotreallylookingforit.Hisdisbeliefinthe
earth'srotationdidnotwhollyrestonthissingleexperiment,inanycase:
Hereisanotherpositiveproofthattheearthcannotrotate.IntheDesertofSahara,thelengthfromeastto
westis3,000miles,itsaveragebreadth900miles,anditsarea2,000,000squaremiles.Rainfallsonthis
desertatintervalsonlyoffivetotenortwentyyears.Iftheearthrotatesover10,000,000milesdaily
[correctedinerratatoamere1,555,200milesadaystilltoolargebyafactorofabout60!],andin
additionmakesanothermovementroundtheorbitandsunyearlyhowcanthislargedesertescapetherain
fromtheheavensforyearsatastretch,whileotherplacesreceivetherainregularly?Why?Itisbecause
thisdesertisafixture,andisnotfavouredbyrainfromtheheavens,likeotherplaces,owingto
geographicalconditions.
AsrecentasJune,1917,itrainedforaboutonehouronmygarden,andonlytwoandahalfmilesfrom
here,north,south,eastandwest,therewasnorainatall.
Hisgardenshouldbelocatedandmarkedwithablueplaquetorecorditsimportantroleinthehistoryof
thought.
IwouldnotwanttoaddresseachofthemanyfallaciesexpoundedinWestfield'sbook,thoughitmaybeof
interestthathethoughtthattherotationoftheearththathewasarguingagainstwasliketherollingofa
ball,withthenorthandsouthpolesexchangingplacestwicedaily,butIdothinkhisattempttojustifya
beliefinaflatearthisworthyofsomeattention:

AsIcontendthatourearthispracticallyflatexceptforthehills,mountainsandvalleys,thatnosuchthing
asaglobeexists,readersmaywonderwhythesunisnotonviewallovertheworldatonetime.Myanswer
isasillustrated.No1isthepositionofthesunatmidday,inJune,inEngland.Atthesametimeitis
midnightinNewZealand,andthemountain,hillorhorizonasshownatCwouldeasilypreventapersonin
NewZealandatDfromviewingthesunwhenoverEngland.
No2isthesunatNewZealandinmidwinterandapersoninEnglandatAispreventedfromviewingthe
sunatNewZealandafterithastravelledfromviewingacrosstheheavenstothatcountry.Thisisduetothe
mountains,hills,towns,villagesorhorizonatBobstructingtheview.Allreadersareawarethatmountains
andhillsandhorizonarecommoninallcountries,andthereforeitisthesethateasilyhidethesunfromour
view,althoughthesunisevenatahighaltitudeatthatplace.
(Yes,thosehorizonsgeteverywhere,don'tthey?)OnthisbasisWestfieldcalculatesthesuntobeonly
2,500milesabovetheearth.Curiously,heomitstosayexactlyhowitmustmoveinrelationtotheflat
earthbelowit,inordertogivetherelativetimingandorientationofsunrisesandsunsetsthatareactually
observedthroughouttheworld.Buttodosowouldpresumablybeasimpleexercise,givenhisconfident
conclusiontothisvolume:
Thereare[...]largesumsofmoneyspentannuallyatourObservatoriesthroughoutEnglandonastronomy
baseduponAstronomers'opinionandenormousdistancesgivenbythem,suchasthedistanceoftheearth
tothepolestarandsunofmillionsofmiles,whereasordinarymathematicsastaughtatschoolsdaily,
absolutelyprovethedistanceinbothcasestobelessthan10,000miles.
Withallduerespecttoastronomers'prophesiesoffuturehappeningsastocomets,readerswillseetheir
judgmentastodistancesandearthrotationcannotbereliedupon.MayIask,isitworthwhilekeepinga
largestaffatourObservatories,oranyoneworkingatafalseandunreasonabletheory,especiallywhenour
Governmenthasnowdefinitelydecidedoneconomyattheirestablishments?
Aconsiderablesumofmoneycannowbesavedbygreatlyreducingthestaffatobservatoriesinthis
country,andundoubtedlytheGovernmentwillbeconvincedthattheproofsgiveninthissmallbookis[sic]
overwhelmingagainsttheenormousdistancesgivenbyastronomers,andthattheearthrotationtheoryis
absolutelydisproved.
IwonderifthecurrentBritishGovernment,givenitsdocumentedwillingnesstoacceptdodgyevidenceis
yetreadytolisten?

earthmaybemovingfastbutit'salsohugethescaleissolargethattheturnsaresubtleandgentlelike
