Editorial

Jardines impresionistas es, para The Wall Street Journal, a

gigantic garden party y el semanario Time titula Super
Mario Testino la informacin sobre la muestra del fotgrafo
peruano inaugurada en el Museo en septiembre. Son algunas
de las credenciales internacionales se trata de dos de los
medios ms globalmente ledos que confirman la calidad de
las exposiciones de esta temporada. Y luego llegarn JeanLon Grme y Heronas, proyectos que con toda seguridad
concitarn similar si no mayor inters y, claro, alabanzas.
As enumeradas, estas cuatro exposiciones son el perfecto
ejemplo de la diversidad y la pluralidad trminos de moda
que aqu cuadran a la perfeccin de la oferta del Museo
Thyssen-Bornemisza. Si tenemos en cuenta, adems, que las
fotos de Testino convivieron varias semanas con la excepcional
Ghirlandaio y el Renacimiento en Florencia, lo que abarca (en
cuanto a pocas, gneros, estilos, temas, miradas) este paseo
artstico es impresionante. En este nmero de Perspectivas
tambin queremos abarcar mucho y anunciar todo lo que se
nos viene encima (en el mejor sentido de la expresin) durante
el invierno: la puesta en marcha de la tienda on-line, una
nueva presentacin temporal del arte sovitico de nuestras
colecciones, la constante actividad educativa, los talleres y
conciertos para los Amigos o la instalacin de unas pantallas
tctiles que facilitarn y amenizarn el recorrido por las salas. Y
es costumbre al finalizar el ao, recapitular sobre algunas cosas,
por lo que hemos querido en este nmero dar las gracias a los
patrocinadores, a los colaboradores y a los amigos corporativos
del Museo, con cuya ayuda da gusto contar.

For The Wall Street Journal, Impressionist Gardens is a gigantic

garden party, while Time magazine used the headline Super
Mario Testino for their report on the exhibition of the work
of the Peruvian photographer that opened at the Museum in
September. These two examples from two of the worlds most
widely read publications are just some of the international
accolades that confirm the quality of this seasons exhibitions.
In the near future the Museum will be presenting Jean-Lon
Grme and Heroines, two projects that will undoubtedly arouse
similar, if not greater, interest and admiration. Taken together,
these four exhibitions offer a perfect example of the diversity
and plurality (fashionable terms that fit the present context
admirably) of the range of exhibitions held at the ThyssenBornemisza Museum. If we also bear in mind that Mario
Testinos photographs coincided on display for some weeks
with the exhibition Ghirlandaio and the Renaissance in Florence,
the overall range and scope (of periods, genres, styles, subjects
and viewpoints) is impressive. In this issue of Perspectives we
also intend to cover considerable ground and to announce as
many forthcoming events and activities as possible for this
winter season. They include the launch of the new on-line
shop, a new temporary presentation of the collection of Soviet
art in the Permanent Collection, the ongoing and numerous
educational activities, workshops and concerts for Friends, and
the installation of tactile screens that make visiting the galleries
easier and more agreeable. As is traditionally the case, the end
of the year is a time for summing up, and for this reason the
Museum would like to express its thanks here to its sponsors,
collaborators and corporate Friends, whose help it is delighted
to receive.

Jardines impresionistas
Macizos de flores y rboles frutales, conversaciones y paseos por
los grandes parques pblicos de la ciudad, lecturas, meriendas
o juegos en la intimidad de los jardines privados, el trabajo
cotidiano en pequeos huertos familiares,todo un universo
de luz y color, de texturas y perfumes, de vida y arte al aire libre,
la gran pasin de los impresionistas, llenan desde mediados de
noviembre las salas de exposiciones temporales del Museo y de
la Fundacin Caja Madrid. Son ms de 130 obras venidas de
colecciones y museos de todo el mundo para ilustrar un tema
que fue enormemente popular en el siglo XIX y tratado con
profusin por todos los maestros del impresionismo y por sus
seguidores, pero que nunca antes haba sido motivo de una
muestra monogrfica.
La exposicin rene magnficos ejemplos de los parques
pblicos y jardines privados representados por Manet, Monet,
Renoir o Morisot, de los jardines productivos y huertos
pintados por Sisley y sobre todo por Pissarro, pero tambin
obras destacadas de pintores que experimentaron su influencia
en la siguiente generacin, como Czanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh,
Vuillard o Bonnard y, fuera de Francia, de un grupo de artistas
que se dejaron influir por la bsqueda de la luz y el aire libre
(Sargent, Sorolla, Klimt, Merrit Chase, Prendergast, Mary Casat,
Liebermann,), para terminar con la representacin del tema
del jardn en la transicin del post-impresionismo a las primeras
vanguardias del siglo XX, con obras de Ernst, Malvich, Nolde o
Munch, entre otros.
El punto de partida lo encontramos en las primeras salas
del Museo con un espacio dedicado a los precursores, artistas
que, con sus jardines de interior o floreros (Delacroix) o sus
paisajes ntimos (Corot y la escuela de Barbizon), anuncian
el camino hacia el jardn impresionista, una combinacin
de elementos de paisaje, representaciones de flores, escenas
de gnero y retratos. El objetivo, representar un lugar de
esparcimiento y ocio, un paisaje prximo e ntimo, un
fragmento de naturaleza en armona con el alma del artista. No
hay nada comparable a la naturaleza en la que uno vive a diario
y que realmente le agrada a uno. Los cuadros as creados estn
impregnados de una sensacin de intimidad y de la dulzura de
las impresiones que sta te produce (Daubigny).
Los pintores de la escuela de Barbizon fueron los que ms
ampliamente desarrollaron este gnero de paisaje ntimo, origen
de lo que ms tarde se conocer como el jardn del artista y
que alcanzar su mxima expresin con el creado por Monet
en su casa de Giverny. El jardn de artista es aquel que l mismo
disea, cuida y pinta; es el lugar ideal para experimentar los

Impressionist Gardens
Drifts of flowers and groups of fruit trees, conversations and
strolls through the citys great public parks, reading, picnics and
games in the privacy of the garden at home, daily work on the
small family allotment: a universe of light and colour, textures
and perfumes, art and outdoor life. The garden, that great
Impressionist passion, fills the temporary exhibitions galleries
of the Museum and of Fundacin Caja Madrid from midNovember onwards. More than 130 works have been loaned
from collections and museums around the world to illustrate
a theme of enormous popularity in the 19th century and one
widely depicted by all the Impressionist painters and their
followers. The subject, however, has never previously been the
subject of a monographic exhibition.
The exhibition brings together outstanding examples of
paintings of public parks and private gardens by Manet, Monet,
Renoir and Morisot, as well as depictions of working gardens
and vegetable plots by Sisley and above all Pissarro. In addition,
it includes major works by painters of the following generation
who were influenced by the Impressionists, including Czanne,
Gauguin, Van Gogh, Vuillard and Bonnard, as well as a group of
artists outside France who were influenced by the Impressionist
quest for light and the outdoors (Sargent, Sorolla, Klimt, Merrit
Chase, Prendergast, Mary Cassat, Liebermann, and others). It
concludes with the depiction of gardens in the transition from
Post-impressionism to the early 20th-century avant-gardes, with
works by Ernst, Malevich, Nolde and Munch, among others.
The exhibition opens with a room devoted to the
forerunners of garden painting: artists whose interior gardens
and flower compositions (for example, Delacroix) or intimate
landscapes (Corot and the Barbizon School) heralded the shift
towards the Impressionist garden. This new subject comprised a
combination of landscape, depictions of flowers, genre elements
and portraiture. The aim of such works was to depict a place of
leisure and enjoyment, an everyday, intimate landscape and a
fragment of nature in harmony with the artists soul. There is
nothing comparable to nature in which one lives on a daily basis
and which is truly pleasing. Paintings created in this way are
imbued with a sense of intimacy and with the sweetness of the
impressions that it produces in one. (Daubigny)
It was the painters of the Barbizon school who most
developed this genre of intimate landscape that lay at the origins
of what would later be termed the artists garden. Gardens
of this type would achieve their highest form of expression in
Monets at Giverny. The artist designs, cultivates and paints his

of colour, light and atmosphere. Gardens such as Monets at
Argenteuil and Giverny, Renoirs at rue Cortot and Caillebottes
at Petit-Gennevilliers are among of the most celebrated.

El auge de la jardinera y la botnica desde mediados

del siglo XIX, con la introduccin y cultivo en Europa de
cientos de flores y plantas nuevas y exticas -posible gracias a
algunos adelantos tcnicos e inventos en horticultura, como
el invernadero-, unido a la apertura al pblico de los grandes
parques reales y a la inauguracin de otros muchos espacios al
aire libre para el esparcimiento, convirti el cultivo y disfrute
de las flores y parques en uno de los pasatiempos predilectos
en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX; tambin para muchos de los
pintores impresionistas, que cultivaron sus propios jardines y
huertos, intercambindose entre ellos consejos de jardinera.
Los jardines privados se ponen de moda y se convierten en un
saln al aire libre, un lugar agradable donde recibir y disfrutar
de la naturaleza y, en el entorno de los pintores impresionistas,
escritores y otros artistas de la poca, fueron el lugar ideal para
la puesta en comn de ideas y experiencias artsticas. El jardn
de artista convierte tambin al espectador en invitado del
pintor, invitado a compartir su intimidad; son numerosos los
ejemplos reunidos en la exposicin en la que vemos cmo la
composicin, subrayada a travs de un sendero que se abre entre
flores y plantas, incita a adentrarse en el espacio del cuadro. Una
invitacin a la que nos va a resultar muy difcil resistir.

From the mid-19th century onwards gardening and

botany enormously increased in popularity in Europe due
to the introduction into Europe and cultivation of hundreds
of new flowers and exotic species of plants, made possible
through technological advances and horticultural inventions
such as the greenhouse. This phenomenon was combined with
the opening to the public of the great royal parks in France
and the creation of many more public spaces for leisure. As
a result, the cultivation and enjoyment of flowers and parks
became one of the favourite pastimes of the second half of the
19th century. This was certainly the case for a number of the
Impressionist painters, who cultivated their own gardens and
vegetable plots and exchanged gardening tips. Private gardens
became fashionable and took on the nature of outdoors salons,
agreeable places for receiving guests and enjoying nature. For
the Impressionist painters, receiving artists and writers in the
garden provided the perfect venue for sharing ideas and artistic
experiences. Depictions of the artists garden also made the
viewer the artists guest, invited to share his private space, and
the exhibition includes numerous examples in which we see how
the composition, emphasised through a pathway that opens out
among flowers and plants, invites the viewer to enter into the
pictorial space: an invitation difficult to refuse.

Mario Testino. Todo o nada

Un par de das antes de la apertura al pblico de su exposicin,
en un receso del montaje, Mario Testino recorre las salas de
la Coleccin Thyssen-Bornemisza; se detiene en las obras que
tienen alguna conexin con las fotografas que componen
Todo o nada. Primera parada, Habitacin de hotel: Uno de los
artistas que influencia mi trabajo desde hace muchos aos
explica es Edward Hopper, no tanto por sus personajes, sino
por sus colores y su estilo en la composicin. Un poco ms
adelante, uno al lado de otro, estn los Dos desnudos femeninos
en un paisaje, de Otto Mller, y el Desnudo de rodillas ante
un biombo rojo, de Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: Son un punto de
partida para m en cuanto al desnudo, no es exactamente como
yo lo hago, pero me gusta la franqueza con la que los artistas
alemanes se enfrentan a este tipo de trabajo, sin ningn lmite,
sin pudor. Despus, el fotgrafo peruano pasa ante la obra de
Kees van Dongen Retrato de una mujer con un cigarrillo (Kiki
de Montparnasse) y la seala: Tanto l por su suavidad en los

Mario Testino. All or Nothing

A few days before the opening of the exhibition and during
a break in its setting-up, Mario Testino visited the galleries
of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, pausing before the
works that are connected in some way with the photographs
on display in All or Nothing. He first stopped in front of Hotel
Room, commenting that: One of the artists who has influenced
my work for many years is Edward Hopper, not so much for
the figures as for the colours and compositional style. Next,
he paused before two works hanging next to each other, Two
female Nudes in a Landscape by Otto Mller and Kneeling Nude
before a red Screen by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. For me these
are a starting point with regard to the nude, not exactly as I
do it, but I like the frankness with which the German artists
approached this type of work, with no limits and no sense of
false modesty. Next, the Peruvian photographer looked at Kees

colores, como ella por su estilo Es un estilo que se reproduce

en mi trabajo y que se puede ver en algunas de las obras que
tengo abajo. Se refiere a la sala Bodmer, donde cuelgan las
fotografas de su exposicin.
La ltima parada es frente a Retrato de Millicent, duquesa
de Sutherland, pintado en 1904 por John Singer Sargent: Es
una de mis grandes influencias aclara Mario Testino, no solo
por su manera de hacer los retratos, sino porque se concentr
mucho en la sociedad de su poca y, hasta cierto punto, las
actrices y modelos que fotografo pertenecen a la sociedad de
esta poca, no tanto ligada a la herencia y la familia sino ms
bien ligada al xito en el trabajo. Esas representantes de la
sociedad contempornea son Kate Moss, Demi Moore, Claudia
Schiffer, Kate Winslet, Natalia Vodianova o Daria Werbowy,
entre otras, protagonistas de la exposicin Todo o Nada de
Mario Testino: Es un recuento de dos extremos de mi trabajo
comenta el fotgrafo. Todo es la parte de mi trabajo ligada a la
moda, la alta moda, estos vestidos que casi no se pueden poner
las mujeres porque no hay lugares donde pueden ir as, pero
que muestran la creatividad de los diseadores. Pasamos por el
desvestir y llegamos al desnudo, que es Nada. Pero Todo o Nada
se puede aplicar a cuando uno est vestido con todas estas ropas
o cuando est desnudo, porque no sabemos cuando uno es ms
Todo o ms Nada.

(Kiki de Montparnasse) and noted: ... the artist for the subtlety
of the colours and the model for her style [...] Its a style that
I reproduce in my work and which can be seen in some of my
images downstairs, in reference to the Bodmer Room where
Testinos photographs are on display.
The last halt was in front of Portrait of Millicent, Duchess
of Sutherland, painted in 1904 by John Singer Sargent. He is
one of my great influences, Testino notes, not just for the
way in which he created his portraits but also because of his
intense focus on the society of his time, in the same way that,
to some extent, the actresses and models that I photograph
belong to the present age, which is associated not so much with
inherited wealth and family but with professional success. The
representatives of this present-day society are Kate Moss, Demi
Moore, Claudia Schiffer, Kate Winslet, Natalia Vodianova and
Daria Werbowy, among others, all of whom are the stars of the
exhibition All or Nothing by Mario Testino: It is a summary
of the two extremes of my work, he notes. All is the part that
is linked to fashion and haute couture, to the sort of dresses
that women can hardly wear because there is nowhere that one
can go dressed like that, but which reveal the creativity of the
designers. Then, in Nothing, we move from the clothed state to
the naked one. However, All or Nothing can be applied to being
dressed or undressed, as it is impossible to say when one is
more All or more Nothing.

Proyeccin internacional.
Una parte fundamental del trabajo del equipo de EducaThyssen es participar en la formacin de otros
profesionales de la educacin en museos, centros de arte y universidades; se trata, sin duda, de un
medio fundamental para la difusin de los programas educativos del Museo y de su metodologa de
trabajo. En los ltimos meses esta tarea se ha llevado a cabo en diversas instituciones latinoamericanas.
El curso se inici viajando a Argentina, concretamente a Buenos Aires, donde se imparti el curso
Comunicacin y educacin en espacios e instituciones culturales, organizado por el Instituto de
Comunicacin Social de la Universidad Catlica Argentina, y a la ciudad de Salta, a su Museo de Bellas
Artes, donde tuvo lugar un seminario de formacin de profesionales de museos. La siguiente etapa
fue Brasil, con la participacin en el encuentro internacional Dilogos sobre educacin, museos y arte
organizado por la Pinacoteca del Estado de So Paulo y Santander Cultural, con sedes en Porto Alegre,
So Paulo y Recife. Por ltimo, la ms reciente y tambin cercana ha tenido lugar en Lisboa, en el
congreso titulado Em Nome das Artes, Em Nome dos Pblicos, organizado por Culturgest.

International participation
A key element within the work of the EducaThyssen team is its participation in the training of
education professionals for museums, art centres and universities. This work undoubtedly represents a vital channel for the
dissemination of the Museums educational programmes and its methodology in this field. Over the past few months this type
of activity has been carried out in a number of Latin American institutions. The first destination was Buenos Aires, Argentina,
where the course Communication and Education in cultural Spaces and Institutions was offered, organised by the Institute for Social
Communication of the Universidad Catlica Argentina. The next destination was the Museum of Fine Arts in the city of Salta,
where a training seminar for museum professionals was held. This was followed by Brazil, where the Museum participated in the
international conference Dialogues on Education, Museums and Art, organised by the So Paolo State Gallery and Santander Cultural,
based in Porto Alegre, So Paolo and Recife. Finally, the most recent event of this type and also the nearest geographically took place
in Lisbon, with the conference entitled In the Name of the Arts, in the Name of the Public, organised by Culturgest.

Qu tiene que ver esto con la navidad?

Estas Navidades, el equipo de EducaThyssen recupera el taller Qu tiene que ver esto con la Navidad?
para la ya tradicional actividad que organiza con motivo de estas fiestas y de las vacaciones escolares.
Dirigido a nios y nias de entre 6 y 12 aos acompaados de algn adulto, este taller, realizado con
gran xito en aos anteriores, pretende aproximar a los participantes al espritu de la Navidad a travs
de las obras de arte del Museo, al margen de credos y religiones, y mostrarles tambin las diversas
formas de celebrar el inicio del ao en culturas diversas.

This Christmas the EducaThyssen team is once again organising the workshop Whats all this got to do

popular workshop is to bring participants closer to the spirit of Christmas through works of art in the Museum, independent of

Visitas comentadas, ms oferta y nuevos recorridos

Las Visitas comentadas a la Coleccin Permanente estn dirigidas
a alumnos y profesores de Educacin Secundaria y Bachillerato,
y forman parte de los programas permanentes que el equipo
educativo del Museo desarrolla de forma paralela al curso escolar.
La oferta, que se ha ampliado desde octubre con un grupo
en horario de tarde, incluye diversos recorridos por periodos
(Del Gtico al Renacimiento, El Barroco, etc.) o temticos (La
Coleccin Thyssen-Bornemisza como espejo del Quijote y Actores
de reparto. Aves en el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza), a los que hay

Guided tours, more options and new routes

The Guided Tours of the Permanent Collection are aimed at Secondary School and A level pupils and teachers and are part of the
ongoing programmes that the Museums Educational Team organises in parallel with the school year. The options have been
expanded since October with tours in the afternoons. They include various routes structured by period (From the Gothic to the
Renaissance, The Baroque, etc.,) and by theme (The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection as a Mirror of Don Quixote, and Supporting
Actors. Birds in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza). In addition, there are routes specifically designed to focus on some of the temporary
exhibitions while they are on display. This season the Museum is offering tours of Impressionist Gardens until mid-February, while
tours of the new exhibition, Heroines, start in March.

En colaboracin como siempre con la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, el Museo convoca un ao ms su Universidad de Mayores, con
el curso-taller El lugar del espectador que comenzar a impartirse en enero de 2011. Las diversas formas de mirar y sus posibilidades
expresivas, simblicas o polticas, y cmo stas se consuman en la obra de arte, es el tema central de esta propuesta dirigida al pblico

University for mature students, new course

In collaboration once again with the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, the
Museum is extending an invitation to its University for Mature Students
in the form of a course-workshop entitled The Place of the Viewer, which
begins in January 2011. Different ways of looking, their expressive,
symbolic and political implications and how are come about within the
work of art is the central theme of this years activity, which is aimed at
the general adult public, including Friends (who benefit from a special
discount) and students of the Universidad de Mayores programme of the
URJC (who are offered free enrolment). The course-workshop is organised
into three groups at different dates between January and April 2011.
Enrolment starts on 1 December.

Held in the museums galleries throughout the course

Every month from October to June one of the works in the
Collection is selected as the subject of another educational activity
for older visitors, entitled In the Gallery. This activity takes place
through the invaluable participation of the Museums Volunteer
Group, members of whom prepare a detailed explanation every
month of the selected painting which they present to all interested
visitors in the room in which the work is displayed. The chosen
works are: December, The Virgin of Humility with Angels and a
Donor (Anonymous Venetian artist, ca.1360); January, Still Life
with Fruit Pie and Various Objects. (Willem Claesz, Heda, 1634);
February, New York City, 3 (Piet Mondrian, 1941); and March,
Portrait of George Washingtons Cook (Gilbert Stuart, ca.17951797). The talks are given every Thursday of the month at 12

EducaThyssen and Nintendo
to investigate the educational
potential of consoles and video
games. Over the course of some
months, visitors from all sectors

simulator. This is a game that
helps users to learn to draw
using a console. Now, everyone
who wishes to demonstrate
their artistic skills is invited to
participate in an international
painting competition organised
by the Museum. The challenge
is to reproduce Franz Marcs

Los caminos del arte: msica para la coleccin

La msica y la pintura vuelven a unirse en la prxima convocatoria
de Los caminos del Arte, un curso organizado como siempre en
exclusiva para los Amigos. Msica para la coleccin es el ttulo de
la propuesta que llegar a principios de 2011 y que se plantea como
un recorrido por las obras del Museo que permita a sus participantes
descubrir vinculaciones musicales con los distintos compositores de
cada momento histrico, desde el siglo XIV hasta el Romanticismo.
Estar conducido por la historiadora del Arte Pepa Mateos y se
desarrollar a lo largo de cinco sesiones, durante los meses de febrero
y marzo, en cuatro grupos de entre 15 y 20 personas, a escoger entre
los martes o mircoles de 11 a 12.30 horas, los viernes de 17 a 18.30
horas o los domingos de 12.30 a 14 horas. El plazo de inscripcin
comienza el 25 de enero.

Art routes: music for the collection

Music and painting come together once again for the next edition
of Art Routes, a course organised exclusively for Friends. Music
for the Collection is the title of this new series that begins in early
2011 and takes the form of a tour of works in the Museum that will
allow participants to discover musical links between the paintings
and composers of the period in question, from the 14th century to
Romanticism. The tour is led by art historian Pepa Mateos and takes
place over five sessions in February and March. There will be four
groups of 15 to 20 people, with the option of Tuesdays or Wednesdays
from 11am to 12.30pm, Fridays from 5pm to 6.30pm or Sundays from
12.30pm to 2pm. Enrolment from 25 January.

El taller de los amigos: pintura matrica y ensamblaje

Los distintos materiales y sus mltiples combinaciones son el punto
de partida del prximo Taller de los Amigos, que tendr lugar en
los meses de marzo a mayo del prximo ao y en el que se trabajar
con pastas, maderas, plsticos, metales o incluso botones, para
experimentar con ellos y reconocer sensaciones a travs del tacto, el
color, la forma o el volumen. Pintura matrica y ensamblaje es, como
corresponde a este tipo de actividad, una propuesta eminentemente
prctica que constar de ocho sesiones, los domingos, de 11 a 14
horas.

Friends workshop: material painting and assemblage

Different materials and their infinite combinations are the starting
point for the first Friends Workshop, which will take place from
March to May next year. It will involve working with pastes, woods,
plastics, metals and even buttons with the aim of experimenting with
these materials and discovering sensations through touch, colour,
form and volume. Material Painting and Assemblage is, as might be
expected, a markedly practical activity that will take place over eight
sessions on Sundays from 11am to 2pm.
