The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA)
To Know: MGNREGA, which was earlier known as
NREGA, came into effect on 2 February 2006. It was
implemented by the then United Progressive Alliance
(UPA) government. Then it covered only the 200 poorest
districts of the country and was expanded to cover all
rural areas of the country from April 2008.

In the short span of 10 years that the Act has been in existence, it has generated
19.86 billion person-days of employment benefitting 276 million workers, with more
than half the jobs going to women workers and almost a third to members of
scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
MGNREGA has played a much larger role in revitalizing the labour market in rural
areas. Not only has it led to the creation of a class of workers who are using the
MGNREGA as a safety net, but these workers are also able to use it as a bargaining
tool for extraction of higher wages.

over-weight, over-priced and under-performing. But HAL doggedly continued
development, committing more than Rs. 350 crore of company funds.
In its place, the IAF wanted to import over a hundred new trainers from Swiss
company, Pilatus, to supplement the 75 Pilatus PC-7 Mark II trainers it had already
bought.
The IAF, is now convinced about the HTT-40s viability, and wants to take charge of
the project.

compensation of victims in the event of a nuclear accident.
To Know: A statement from the Indian foreign ministry on 4 February 2016 said India has
submitted the Instrument of Ratification of the Convention on Supplementary
Compensation (CSC) for Nuclear Damage to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

International nuclear reactor makers such as General Electric have been reluctant to
set up plants in India because of a 2010 domestic liability law that makes equipment
suppliers accountable for accidents and not the plant operators, as is the global
norm.
Therefore no US company had been willing to invest in Indias nuclear power market
for fear of the liability clause in its domestic law.
Last year, India launched an insurance pool with a liability cap of Rs.1,500 crore
($225 million) to cover the suppliers risk of potential liability.
