PA: SolidWorks Tutorial

Due: 2/23/2016
In order to receive credit for this practice assignment, you must submit the .sldprt file and a written
description of the file before 11:59 p.m. on 2/23/2016 on blackboard. This is an individual (not a group)

assignment. Also, remember that in order to receive credit for this assignment, your submission must
including both of the deliverables detailed at the end of the assignment.
In this assignment, you will be introduced to the use of the SolidWorks software to create a 3D model of
a part that you have designed. This is an important part of the Engineering design process, to verify the
dimensional accuracy of parts you have designed. In this assignment, you will watch a series of
SolidWorks tutorial videos and practice your new knowledge by creating a model of your own part design.
SolidWorks is available on campus on all the engineering studio classrooms and in the computing
commons. Additionally, instructions for how to install the software on your own machine are given on
the course blackboard site under the handouts and resources tab.
To begin, go to http://www.solidworks.com/sw/resources/solidworks-tutorials.htm. Your screen should
look like this:

These are the sections you will do

Look at the section Getting Started with SolidWorks. You will be going through two of these sections:
the Introduction (3D Design Overview) and Lesson One (Parts).

The Introduction section includes three videos:

1. SolidWorks for 3D Design
2. SolidWorks Intuitive User Interface
3. Design Unit Systems and Drafting Standards
The Parts section includes eight videos:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Model Views, Orientation, and Displays

Creating your first 3D Model
Inserting your first 3D Feature
Adding Cylinders with Circle and Boss Feature
Cutting Holes with the Extrude Cut Tool
Rounding Edges with the Fillet Tool
Hollow Out at Constant Thickness with the Shell Tool
Making Changes to a Part

Watching all of these videos should take you about 45 minutes. As you watch each video, do the activities
along with the demonstration to help you learn the material. After you have watched all of the videos,
complete the following task: use SolidWorks to design a part that might be used in a hobby that you
enjoy. Your part design should make use of at least the following skills learned in the videos:

a cylinder made with the circle and boss feature

a hole cut with the extrude cut tool,
a rounded edge made with the fillet tool, and
a hollowed-out section made with the shell tool

Then, submit the following by 11:59 p.m. on 2/23/2016:

1. A brief description of your part (what it is, or what it might be used for). This should be typed
(You can use the textbox in the submission or attach a document)
2. The .sldprt file. Make sure you add dimensions to your part.
