30 The shots used
are of a decent
standard, although
this person has
chosen to have the
artist covering the
masthead which
makes it hard for us
to see what the
magazine is actually
called. Also, the
person on the covers
arms look as though
they have been
photoshopped to
look skinnier which
makes her look really
out of proportion.
Also, the barcode
and pricing
elements/issue
number is in a really
weird placement that
doesnt make sense
and the graphics
look slightly odd in
general.
31 The shot
distances used are of
a good standard
though they lack in
variation. On the
contents page, the
shot distances dont
look too bad and the
contrasting sizes in
the images used
make for an
interesting visual.
However, the double
page spread lacks in
variation as there are
way too many
images which dont
have a lot of
variation which
makes them not look
as interesting to and
audience.

30 The images
used are of a good
quality throughout,
however they dont
communicate the
fact that it is a music
magazine as there is
no obvious reference
to music. Also, the
girl on the cover
doesnt look like a
music artist in the
slightest.
18 The setting
and mise en

communicate that
this is a music
magazine at all.
There Is nothing
through use of
lighting, props,

communicates
what genre this

alone whether it is
a music
magazine.

MEDIA STUDIES AFL 2016

30 There is a clear
difference in size
which helps to create
variation and visual
appeal. However, the
sizing looks a little
odd in terms of
proportion and
balance given the
amount placed on
the cover and
contents page. The
way the image on
the left hand side of
the page has been
placed makes the
contents text look
weird as the way
they have tried to

make the numbering

of the pages follow
her leg looks odd.
Also the use of the
second image on the
right hand side of the
contents page isnt
necessary as it
doesnt really match
the image on the left
and it seemingly has
no relevance. The
images used on the
double page spread
are ok but there are
way too many of
them and they dont
really add to the
article making them
irrelevant and
unnecessary.

30 - The text on the

double page spread
isnt too bad apart
from the fact that it
isnt very well
written and doesnt
contain a lot of
information that is
useful to the reader
as the reader would
want to know what
the artist had to say
and have been given
more images than
words that are very
samey and dont
contribute much to
the article.
30 The use of
images and text in
collaboration is good,
however they arent
very balanced and
dont seem to be
relevant to each
other. The cover
photo doesnt
communicate that
she is a music artist
and she doesnt

seem relevant to the

text. The contents
page images look ok
as they are giving a
brief idea as to what
the rest of the
magazine has to
offer but the images
on the double page
spread have no
relevance to the text.

MEDIA STUDIES AFL 2016

30 The
understanding of
page layout is basic
but well executed
given the content
that the creator has
chosen to put onto
their magazine.
Whilst it looks
slightly cluttered and
full, the images and
texts are kept neat
and tidy apart from
the article numbers
on the contents page
as they dont follow
the box that has
been placed behind
it in order to keep it
neat. The double
page spread is
unconventional yet it
is still pleasant to
look at though it is
nothing interesting
to look at in
particular.
30 Awareness of
the need for
variation in text sizes
in basic but there
still needs to be
more of a variation.
The font used on the
headline on the
double page spread
isnt really headline
material as it looks
boring and doesnt
stand out at all

against the other

areas of text. It is
also of different sizes
which makes no
sense at all and
looks quite odd. The
sizing is decent on
the contents page
and makes sense the
way it is presented.
However, the text on
the cover page looks
odd as it varies in
size and colour
without any apparent
reason.

been used
correctly in this
piece though
not to the best

perhaps as
there are
errors with the

Summary Comment:
In summary, this piece has potential but it has not been approached in the
correct way. The creator has not thought about the way the person on the cover
was supposed to look and as an audience we cant tell what kind of magazine
this is supposed to be let alone what genre of music it is supposed to represent.
The basic layout of the magazine I decent but it could use a little more though
behind it in order to exploit the important part of the magazine that would
reinforce the fact that it is a music magazine. The images that have been used
arent relevant to any genre concerning music and the girl hasnt been
positioned or photographed in a way that makes her look like a music artist.
